Bret Hart made his WCW debut after the Montreal Screwjob and expectations were very high. Bret had been a key player in the WWF for a lot of years and WCW was set to gain a huge main event star when The Hitman arrived in late 1997.
From the very beginning of Bret's WCW run things didn't go quite the way fans expected; his first assignment was a special referee gig at Starrcade 97 and although he challenged Hollywood Hogan to a future match the night after the Pay Per View, that match never happened (on TV). Instead Bret feuded against nWo B-Players, he joined the nWo as their recruiter, he then went on a mission to injure the folks he worked with (in storyline) and he didn't get anywhere near the WCW championship for nearly 2 years. When Bret finally won the WCW Championship he was already approaching the end of his WCW run (and his career), so the fans (and Hart himself) don't have many good memories from Bret's time in World Championship Wrestling.
