I like this style of camera. I think one of the big issues with cameras is that a lot of brands design cameras for camera nerds. Nothing wrong with that, but one of the reasons Fuji X100 line and Instax sell like crazy with younger people is they are fun and easy to use. Photography should be fun, not every image needs to be well thought out, having physical controls and good images out of camera with zero to minimal editing has its place in the world.
It's just youtube comments who keeps yapping. Most of them don't have the work to show their credentials. These cameras sell like hotcakes whether they like it or not.
First Review I see on the model where the TH-camr just show how the body is and isn’t just talking about with both hands on so that no one could figure out how ergonomic or not ergonomic it is. Just for this, thank you 🙏🏽
Very interesting.... i wasnt needing the 40mp+ sensor, but ibis and changing that film dial to iso or something would be ideal. That and a pancake or two at f/2 - 2.8 lens would be ideal for travel. (cheeky 24 and 40mm equiv maybe) having the option for a EVF on the hotshoe would have been nice. - Seemingly good option vs X100v atm, this and couple lenses for same price... its tempting... as much as its nice to share my R6 canon glass with the canon film cameras, is a bit bulky for Ryanair carry on travel! Olympus XA for film and this for digital could be the move.
The 6k 10 bit open gate is really tempting - but for the phone as camera crowd, the lack of stabilization will be an issue… Edit… looks like I missed the OIS in the kit lens and cropped digital image stabilization… so not as hamstrung as I first thought!
What a great review Gordon. You covered so many interesting features that I haven't seen on other reviews. This really looks like a fun little camera and I'm very tempted.
Looks like a cute compact, no ibis is a bit of a bummer, would have good to see the unit from the X-S20, but definitely not a deal breaker. I could see a lot of new people to photography really getting some use out of this camera.
Great video. I'm very tempted by the X-M5 as a small every day carry with the 27mm, for times when I don't want my bigger kit - X-H1 or X-S10 and lenses.
Since such bodies were created for primarily shooting stills, the sacrificed viewfinder was indispensable to such cameras. However, it's alright. They should've provided the optional viewfinder to be bought by consumers. Yet the cam is a 💓cutie!
This one isn't primarily for stills, it's a hybrid aimed equally at vloggers and youtubers. Plus it's also their 'budget ' model, hence no evf. I agree I'd like the option, but most who want that would get xt30 or xt50
@cameralabs ...I know that. I meant in the past. However, I agree with you, we make videos more than photos. I'd still want evf or ovf sitting on top of my cam😍.
it's a solid choice and I bet there'll be some deals on it in November. I like how Fujifilm has so many different options, so even if one doesn't hit for you, there'll be others that do.
As someone who films themselves a lot that mic jack location is perfect! Why has it taken so long for a camera with a mic jack that doesn't block the flip-out screen!!!!
I really appreciate the size of the X-M5 but I don't think people understand how limiting a small body can be for ergonomics with just any lens attached. Besides the kit lens and f2 primes any other fuji lens will feel extremely unbalance. I experienced this quite a bit with the X-E4, even the 50mm f2 felt unwieldy and rather odd looking. You can put any lens even f1.4 but it was not a pleasant to use. If you add a grip to help, it will instantly negate the tiny compact size creating a lesser X-T50.
I love this. It's like the Fuji version of the Lumix GM1 on steroids. Quite tempted to get one as a small alternative to when I don't want to take my XT5 out.
I'm not about to buy one because i still use my X-M1 for the super portability aspects. This does look like the logical 2024 successor to the X-M1 though, and I'm sure for it's niche it'll be equally handy. For those who are getting their underwear in a tangle about all the pro features it doesn't have, I respectfully suggest you might be missing the point - get back to your Pro or H or T ... etc. ◉‿◉
@@MrRickoss I would say no. There are older, cheaper, simpler cameras on the market that you need to learn from. Yes, it's a great choice in the current range, but as the other comment suggests, you could also consider a used or older model from Fujifilm that still has most of the Film SIMs.
Wow..this looks and seems like a great small camera. Very similar market as the Sony ZV E10 II, similar features with a bit of a Fuji flair. Already anticipating a comparison 😊. If you can live without a viewfinder this could be quite appealing for many. Now if only OM or Pan would add similar tools to a small sized camera too (but keep IBIS even if it made it slightly heavier). I am very curious to see how effective the AF is once you get a model you can use. Love small cameras and so far…this looks very tempting! Great review once again!
Thanks, and yes, the ZVE10 series is the biggest competitor, currently more expensive, but I suspect with better AF. Then again, no open gate, no film sims, not as nice to look at etc etc
@@ECDPhotography The X100VI has been out of stock since it was released, mostly because it's a small camera. This is even smaller, cheaper and an ILC. It's not going to be available until well into next year if you dont have one on order.
It seems great within its own concept. Symmetry aside, I think the FilmSim dial looks ridiculous, though - so much clutter and bad typography. Using a slider rather than a dial might've worked better. (Flashback to the Onion video which had a MacBook/iBook without a keyboard, just with a giant iPad dial.) I am only really interested in the X-Pro series now (some interest in the X-H, but I have the Lumix version), as I find the direct dials soothing/unconfusing and the HVF now comes into its own with the Voigtlaenders. When will the retail unit be released? Need to know if it overheats for extended shooting times (2 hours) and if it supports usb charging during operation.
Most cameras can be powered during operation with USB but stop charging. Not sure if this is different, but assume similar to recent Fujifilms. I'd expect it to be in retail this month, certainly before Christmas
i really want to get into photography and looking into getting an actual camera rather than using my phone. fujifilm seems to make cameras that would best suit me from what i've gathered so far. having said that, is this a good first camera for a total beginner like myself?
In their current range it's a great option for beginners, but do also consider one of their older ones, maybe used. If you'd like to do more photo than video, I'd really recommend a model with a viewfinder like the XT30 II or XS20.
I am really impressed with the X-M5, great price point for everything it offers, specially the Open Gate. I do hope build quality is better than that of the X-T50 in the sense that its more durable. I hope ome day AF is confident enough to make me buy that 500mm f5.6 and I am disappointed that the 16-55mm mkii is not internal zoom.
@@jgoodtime people have reported issues where they have to use the camera's warranty to get a replacement. A TH-camr (forgot the name) said he tried 3 different X-T50s and the last one did not got warranty cover because they said water got into the camera. Look up for the video reviews with the pictures in black or white or very de-saturated on the thumbnail.
Does anybody know if it has weather sealing? I've gotten mixed answers online and the fuji website doesn't seem to mention it. I was wondering if I could take it out in snow and maybe light sprinkles
Get the Olympus ep-7 about as small. You get a tilty screen, built in flash and ibis. Slap a Panasonic 20mm pancake lens and you’ll get a much better compact camera
@@WhoIsSerafin I agree there's some great processing on the Olympus cameras, but they've failed to gain popularity for it versus Fujifilm who are literally back-ordered on every new camera they make based a lot on their marketing success with Film SIMs. But yes as I said at the end, this camera is mainly aimed at video people.
great resümee 💪 gordon # i am torn ... let me ask you, how would you rate the reliability of eye AF / eye tracking on the X-M5 with present m5 sensor/engine ?? thanx & rgds from germany
Great review!! One question, just like the x100v and its sisters, is it still possible to create NEW FILM SIMULATION RECIPES, in addition to the ones that come with the camera?
Good morning. I need advice. I want to get an instax, but I don't know what... what instax do you think makes the best results? I like the sq and wide format, but am I concerned about quality or is it the same for all instax? Thank you so much for your reply
@cameralabs OK. Well I hope the results are worth the money, cause I'm quite satisfied with my Xf10 and the only camera I think is much better is the ricoh gr iii. I had the gr2 and was simply amazing
Sounds like it offers more than most of other vlogging-type cameras of today. Good choice for someone just starting with photography (and of course video), if they don't feel the need for viewfinder. Thanks for concise but fully-packed preview Gordon!
@@michaelbell75 I've actually been agonising over the XT-50 and XT-5, but wishing there was an XE-5. There are used XE-4s out there but the prices are too high, ie more expensive than the camera was new.
Great pre-review! Have never owned a Fuji camera. This looks like a great all around camera. I would have like to see a viewfinder, but not a deal breaker. Wonder how long before these are on backorder...lol Great job Gordan and Fuji!
Thanks! Yes, I would have also liked to have an EVF, but thatturns it into a different camera and they already have plenty of those, inc XT30, XT50, XS20, X100 etc
Just an idea - throw in some iPhone and Android camera reviews, the same thorough way you test traditional cameras, I’d be interested to see those, and it may speed up your subs as you’ll reach a new audience. Perhaps kick it off by explaining your approach to camera and and lens reviews.
Thanks! I have done some phone reviews in the past and they've always tanked! It's like people only want to see one thing from me, but equally it's an audience that won't grow. Frustrating!
Thank you for the review, excellent as always. That said, no IBIS on a 6 year old sensor.. absolutely ridiculous and non-sensical recycling decision from Fujifilm = DOA for me. Get a sale or second hand X-S10 for much less money and that beats it bumper to bumper. This new camera makes no sense nor adds any real value or product differentiation to what Fujifilm already has out aside from the hype of "a new toy" that will wear off by next week.
@@cameralabs Lots of style and less and less substance. That shows you the state of the world. Want substance? Buy a real camera, that is, after younleanr some actual photography and filmmaking.. and that's not IG or TikTok. Want style? Get an X-A7 that smokes this new camera on that end. Want both? Get a job and some education :)
Great video. You are great. Do you like it better for street than the ricoh? Is the ricoh better quality with its fixed lens than the 27mm option on this, but actually with no in body stabilization the x-m5 needs the stabilization of a lens that has it. So the primes are out I guess…
Thanks! I haven't spent much time with the Ricohs, so can't really say, but in terms of stabilisation, photographers managed before it existed! You just have to be careful to know the minimum shutter you can handhold, and accept you may be using higher ISOs to achieve it under dim conditions. I shake more than many people do, and my main camera is an unstabilised X100V, and I get along fine with it. Stabilisation is nice for photo, but not mandatory.
Looking at the b&h page with what’s in the box, looks like the little accessory flash that they provide with cameras with no built in flash won’t be included which is a shame, but makes sense for a vlog camera.
Does the video have gyro data like the Sony? Because the crop is too much. I’d rather prefer to stabilize in post with the gyro data than to burn it in the footage.
X-E5 vs R10...lets GO! How about it Gordon? My 2c - Folks would say that the r10 will have obviously better Auto focus, but good autofocus is nothing if it's not deadly accurate. How many can claim that the r10 AF is very accurate? Never seen that conversation to be honest.
Do you mean X-M5? Yes, it would be an interesting comparison, and my assumption going in would be more confident AF from the Canon, but as you say, you never know until you have them side by side. Obviously the R10 - and R50 - are taller and have EVFs.
the x-t30 II is the same price at WEX... 799 body only. I think they should offer a kit with the 27 f2.8 as they did with the original X-m1..... I could fit that into my waterproof jacket pocket!
@@cameralabs updated 18mm please Fuji... And dear Panasonic... A gm5 MK2 a gf7 mk 2 the originals with the 12-32 35-100 f4-5.6 the 20 f1.7 and 42.5;f1.7 was a lovely small travel combo. I used to like those primes with the pan g6 14-140 and only 9-18 as a travel combo. Nowadays we get m43 bodies that are full frame which is bonkers
Although a great camera i feel like the film sims could have been added as a simple quick menu button instead of wasting a entire wheel . They could put in a flash or even made it into a iso dial/compensation dial . Secondly i dont understand why camera brands in general cant provide larger and brighter screens! Phones in 2024 are having its side grips eaten by the screen 😂 but cameras still have the huge ahh Bezel. Not to mention we have oled screen with 100% abode rbg coverage while have 1000+ nits of brightness, not to mention variable refresh rate screens could extend battery life to small extent! Thirdly camera brands in general needs put their r&d into mass producing ibis , which are smaller and effective! The fact than companies like olympus and Panasonic had once crack this magic 10yrs ago yet still not being a common feature its TRULY baffling ! I believe having build in Nd and ibis at budget price would genuinely bring more users back to camera rather than go for dji or iphones as their primary camera !
Well they certainly have a small enough IBIS unit, as seen in the X100 VI, but obviously it still adds to the cost, and they wanted to hit a relatively low point for this model. Plus it means they could add IBIS and an EVF at some point for a possible XE version. I agree about the screens, they really need to catch up with phones.
Enough! I'm tired of this toy camera trend! If you want small camera - just shoot on your phone, don't be a hipster! I want proper camera! You know, with big handle, with XLR inputs, with built-in fan, with viewfinder, with all bells and whistles!
@@ignatiussloane I get that feeling too. I understand, as why watch a video when you could just ask the question to save you time, but it doesn't save me time and obviously is frustrating as the person making the video!
@@cameralabs Thanks Gordon if you check my watch time I actually watched the whole video.. I just saw you said the x-m5 had the 20 most up to date sims and didn't know if that was more than the x-t50. Also wasn't sure if the digital IBIS was as good as the IBIS on the X-T50. Anyway I know your busy no probs and thanks for the content.
Im struggling to think of any high quality compact lenses to go on it, they need updating really. 23mm 2.8 pancake? I dont even like the 35mm view. Think Id put the sigma 10-18mm on it
Well, the ones without EVFs, like the ZVE10, are designed more for vlogging and at people who already use their phone screens for everything. They're not bothered about EVFs. You and I are, but we're not the target audience.
Can you still create custom film sim profiles from the likes of FujiXWeekly with the XM5? really looking to get one of these once it releases :)
I'm guessing you can but haven't confirmed, sorry.
Interesting choice m5 or z5 for the same price
No ibis. I will keep the xs20 😅
What is the “filter” option on the top dial?
Will it be worth adding if you already got X100 VI ? What will be advantage apart from ablility to change lens
The only benefit over the X100 is interchangeable lenses
can we record video with the inbuilt film simulation?
Yes, you can with all Fujifilm cameras
please tset 16-55 mk ii . like you did for 16-50 2.8-4.8.
Thanks for the review. the camera is really nice and compact
It's really nice in person...
Build quality on xt50 is not good?
@@jgoodtime people have reported issues where they have to use the camera's warranty to get a replacement. A TH-camr (forgot the name) said he tried 3 different X-T50s and the last one did not got warranty cover because they said water got into the camera.
Look up for the video reviews with the pictures in black or white or very de-saturated on the thumbnail.
Does anybody know if it has weather sealing? I've gotten mixed answers online and the fuji website doesn't seem to mention it. I was wondering if I could take it out in snow and maybe light sprinkles
I suspect not
Get the Olympus ep-7 about as small. You get a tilty screen, built in flash and ibis. Slap a Panasonic 20mm pancake lens and you’ll get a much better compact camera
It's way behind the XM5 on video, plus some will prefer Fujifilm's Film Sims, but for photography alone, yes, the Olympus EPs are still good options.
@@cameralabsI’m just thinking as a photographer, video isn’t even a thought for my needs. And you do get the simulations that came with the Pen F
@@WhoIsSerafin ep-7 has the tilt up, which is great for stills, better than pen-f! It's just so damned expensive still! 800 euro for the kit in Europe
Cheers Big G! 🙏
great resümee 💪 gordon # i am torn ... let me ask you, how would you rate the reliability of eye AF / eye tracking on the X-M5 with present m5 sensor/engine ?? thanx & rgds from germany
It's still pre-production so I couldn't test AF as I said in the video!
Personally if there is no view finder then it's not a camera! As good as a handphone then
Great review!!
One question, just like the x100v and its sisters, is it still possible to create NEW FILM SIMULATION RECIPES, in addition to the ones that come with the camera?
I'm not sure, sorry!
yes of course that's what the custom modes are there for but just like the lower end models you don't get 7 but rather just 4.
Good morning. I need advice. I want to get an instax, but I don't know what... what instax do you think makes the best results? I like the sq and wide format, but am I concerned about quality or is it the same for all instax? Thank you so much for your reply
The quality is the same on all of them. I have reviewed them all if you have a search
In my country, X-M5 price is just around 300 dollars difference from zve10 mark 2. Which is better?
Too many things to discuss in a comment
Is the body made of metal or plastic?❤i want to know, please❤
Nice ! Used to have an XF-10...thinking this might be a good replacement..
Tuve un XF-10 y lo vendí. Nunca más una cámara sin visor.
Does it have a leaf shutter?
No, it's focal plane. Only the X100 has a leaf shutter in this series
@@cameralabs thanks 🙏
Is it using same sensor as my Xf10?
Does your xf10 have an x trans 4?
@cameralabs honestly, I don't know, I know as an apsc 26mp...that camera I think is from 2018...
@@gianpakasa I was joking, no it uses a different sensor: 26 Mpixel X-trans vs 24 Mpixel Bayer on yours I think.
@cameralabs OK. Well I hope the results are worth the money, cause I'm quite satisfied with my Xf10 and the only camera I think is much better is the ricoh gr iii. I had the gr2 and was simply amazing
X-m5 vs x-e4 which should i get???
Do you want a viewfinder?
@@cameralabs i dont need a viewfinder
Sounds like it offers more than most of other vlogging-type cameras of today. Good choice for someone just starting with photography (and of course video), if they don't feel the need for viewfinder.
Thanks for concise but fully-packed preview Gordon!
You're welcome!
Such a shame there's no viewfinder! I'd have thought seriously about getting one otherwise.
Isn't there an optional one for the hot shoe?
Get the X-T30 II then
@@michaelbell75 I've actually been agonising over the XT-50 and XT-5, but wishing there was an XE-5. There are used XE-4s out there but the prices are too high, ie more expensive than the camera was new.
@@schmui No mention of it anywhere, though you'd think there'd be an aftermarket thing eventually.
@@jandekker6008
Hm. Curious.
Is the 10-bit video in a flat log profile?
I think you can choose the profile for 10 bit video
It looks like Fujifilm has come up with a really good successor to the Canon M6 Mark II.
No flip up screen :(
Did you get 500mm lens as well for review? That is the only one of 3 announced today interest me.
I held it, but that's all!
If Fuji can release XM5 with viewfinder, it will be great :D
if they haven't shelved the X-E line permanently you might get your wish :)
How much this will cost?
$799 US
@@michaelbell75 thanks I was just commenting for engagement hahaha
This against canon M6 mark II
you can slide a viewfinder onto the canon
Thank you for the review, excellent as always. That said, no IBIS on a 6 year old sensor.. absolutely ridiculous and non-sensical recycling decision from Fujifilm = DOA for me. Get a sale or second hand X-S10 for much less money and that beats it bumper to bumper. This new camera makes no sense nor adds any real value or product differentiation to what Fujifilm already has out aside from the hype of "a new toy" that will wear off by next week.
An older model would make more sense for some, but others will prioritise the size and style.
US$899 is very affordable. Sadly I suspect the actual street price would be at least US$1500 to get one immediately.
Its $799 US
In Sweden, the kit is listed for the equivalent of $1,300
I’m a Fuji fanboy but £800 for the body only is way to much money in my opinion especially for such a basic camera!
But compare it to what else is available and you'll see it's actually quite good value for the spec.
Fujifilm seem to be developing new cameras and lenses at quite a pace 👍
No ibis and viewfinder should be staple at 800 price and up.
It would be nice, but show me any other new camera with a viewfinder, IBIS and an APSC sensor at $800. Or even $1000. Or even more.
Sin duda
It looks a lot better than I imagined the new x-m or x-a replacement to be
Agreed
Looks nice. But the first thing on my mind was "now Panasonic will understand it's time for another range finder style MFT"....
There are so many opportunities!
@@cameralabs Thank you, that is great to know.
No tilty screen means it's a NO for me unfortunately. It would have made a cool street photography camera with the 27mm pancake
Looking at the b&h page with what’s in the box, looks like the little accessory flash that they provide with cameras with no built in flash won’t be included which is a shame, but makes sense for a vlog camera.
True, but of course you can mount any flash you like on the hotshoe
Another FAB Fuji - join the que !! Unlike Joker 2 this is a WINNER !
Let's not compare this crap to our beloved Fuji 🙂
Does the video have gyro data like the Sony? Because the crop is too much. I’d rather prefer to stabilize in post with the gyro data than to burn it in the footage.
Sadly not, I think only Sony does that
@@cameralabs too bad.
Have a spectacular evening Gordon.
Why thankyou, I hope you do too!
Okay, IT is worse than X-S20 I think. But the question is, is it worth to get one instead of a used X-S10?
Depends if you want an EVF or the other differences of an XS10
Thank you Gordon for an excellent preview! 🌟
You're welcome!
Are these right sideed button can be operate with right hand while holding the camera? How about ergonomic?
Yep, same as models like the X100
X-E5 vs R10...lets GO! How about it Gordon?
My 2c - Folks would say that the r10 will have obviously better Auto focus, but good autofocus is nothing if it's not deadly accurate. How many can claim that the r10 AF is very accurate? Never seen that conversation to be honest.
Do you mean X-M5? Yes, it would be an interesting comparison, and my assumption going in would be more confident AF from the Canon, but as you say, you never know until you have them side by side. Obviously the R10 - and R50 - are taller and have EVFs.
Great value. You can use it for a year and sell it for the same price or for some profit.
Pretty much...
If you where to pick from the Ricoh GR 3 vs M5 which way would you go?
They're hugely different cameras - for the Ricoh you'd need to be happy with a fixed lens. If you are happy with a fixed lens, I'd go for it.
the x-t30 II is the same price at WEX... 799 body only. I think they should offer a kit with the 27 f2.8 as they did with the original X-m1..... I could fit that into my waterproof jacket pocket!
I agree, more small lenses please!
No viewfinder, no IBIS. Nope. And $$$$. Nice, big LCD.
Sound like soccer mom type camera gots serious upgrage😊
Great review. Seems pretty decent value for money.
Thanks!
Great review and great first-looks!!
Thanks!
Hi Gordon is the XM5 electronic first curtain only? Can’t seem to find spec confirmation
At 6:43 you can see that mechanical shutter ("MS") is available separately to EFCS ("EF")
I show the shutter menu in the video
There are literally dozens of those on the market already, go buy one
Literally a better ZV-E10
Certainly cheaper
Pretty interesting. Thanks Gordon.
You're welcome!
Does it come with the same IBIS and film simulations as the X-T50?
Mate, watch the review and all will be revealed

Think Id put the sigma 10-18mm on it
I agree, we need more good small lenses
Looks beautiful
It does look really nice in person
I think it is a very bad trend with the latest new cameras that lacks a proper EVF !
Well, the ones without EVFs, like the ZVE10, are designed more for vlogging and at people who already use their phone screens for everything. They're not bothered about EVFs. You and I are, but we're not the target audience.
@@cameralabs I know, but those types really need to learn sooner than later that an EVF is the best way to use a proper Camera.
