Something I should mention: While AF is a huge deal to many (and I'm also in this group!), the editing/testing/pacing and ultimately the narrative of the video was about the new X-M5 camera. Knowing I only had the unit for less than a week, I could have either 1.) done a singular AF-only video on this camera and not much else, or 2..) do a segment on AF (which I did test more than any other feature) but also include all the other camera features. I ultimately went with #2 because this video really is about the X-M5 as a whole. However, I'm sure somebody will do a full-blown, dedicated, and more comprehensive video on just the AF of this camera.

The lack of in-body stabilization is a real pain for those of us who rely on compact lenses as the perfect match for these very compact bodies, as most prime lenses don't come with in-lens stabilization, while zoom lenses tend to be large.
@@Haggettco well, it really depends on your usage. If you are content creator (video) with this little camera and a gimbal you are in a pretty good place. Putting all the ports on the right side instead of the left side where they would obstruct the display hinge is honestly genius! I really really pray that Fuji manage to fix their AF issues because the rest of their designs are just so genius. Happy X-T5 user.
Well, they fix one thing to break another, I still think they can do better, what I mean is, by moving the ports from the left side to the right side, that created another set of problems, the memory card had to go with the battery behind the tripod plate, and when you have all the cables connected to the right side, you no longer can hand hold the camera, you loose your ability to grip the camera, so in order to use all the ports, you have to set the camera on a tripod. So they fix one thing to break another. They should create a dongle, where you connect one plug to the camera, and at the other end you will have all your connection ports available.
As a X-T5 user I want to thank You first from such a great review once again and also from the information about the difference of AF between those two cameras. 24:33 The DOF is enormous here, and the camera still can't keep up, imagine shooting with a narrow DOF, nothing that's moving towards the camera will ever be in focus. 25:15 the side to side movement is completely irrelevant for the autofocus, no idea what that is supposed to demonstrate. A simple test of the subject moving towards the camera with something like the 90mm f/2 would've been more than enough to give us an idea, this test seems like you're doing everything you possibly can to make it easy for the AF, and it still falls on its face.

Not convinced here about the AF improvements. Subject detection lock on is not the same as being in focus. False positive locks have been an issue. You can even see it in your own video here, focus box on your eye but the actual focus is on the back wall. Looks like more of the same issue all over again. The AFC shot of the dog you're at f5.2 and 38.5mm. I can pause it and see that the DOF is not very shallow. I'll wait to see a more comprehensive test.
Great review!. The improvement is a vast step in the right direction, but I am skeptical. The issue with both my X-T5's was that when the square would light up green over the subject's eye, in Lightroom the image was obviously not sharp. Yes, I print 16x 20 so am more critical. The second issue I see is that the X-M5 seemed to focus briefly on the face, and sometimes eyebrow before settling on the eye view the running woman footage) And the dog footage you revealed that several images were "not there". Keep in mind the X-M5 is 26MP, we all know that with the Fuji 40MP sensor cameras, focus is more difficult to achieve because the enhanced resolution shows even more when the focus is perfect. Viewers here will no doubt hate me for saying this, but I mention it as what the current state of autofocus is. While being a Fuji fanboy exclusively for 10 years, I sold my two cameras and all the zooms when I picked up a Nikon FZ. This camera instantly and always got to the eye only, and never gives me false positives in the viewfinder. So, instead of comparing the X-M5 with the X-T5, I would like to see a comparison with the latest Nikon/Sony/Canon cameras. I kept three Fuji primes in the fervent hope that the next 40MP camera will finally catch up in the AF arena. And BTW there are cameras way better at AF than my two FZ's. I think Fuji needs to up their game with a dedicated AF AI chip similar to what Sony has achieved with their top camera. I would be happy to pay the cost.

@@bemboing4338he shared an update about AF testing. Looks like it has been improved a bit for photography, but not quite sure about video. Guess we will have to wait until the firmware has been actually released to finally know.
Hi, that's an impressive improvement. Thanks for these extensive tests. But can you confirm that the square in the display results in a sharp image? I can remember a test where someone demonstrated that the Fuji camera had a reasonable hit rate with the square, but if you look into the images, you see that they are not in focus. Even when the square points to the right spot in the image
I think even this is its 5th generation camera, the AF is still sucks or major problem. I just watched the AF test that you did especially on the video AF test where you were dancing around. On the Xt5 , everything was blurry (BG or FG) on the Xm5. Almost all of the time, even if the white small box was on your eyes, it was your BG was in focus not on you. You can see it when you zoomed in and slowed it down.
Would be interesting to see an EVF only version, people could use a phone for a screen via the app and blue tooth, which be better than the screen as you can hold it in your hand in any location, while the EVF would give a belter hand held .
I have been following this channel and the work for years. there's a lot of great work and performance here, but I don't agree with how autofocus and autofocus in general are tested. the conditions and testing are done in such a way that Fuji at least somehow turns out reasonable. It does not correspond to real use and the results are several levels worse (my personal experience with xt4 and h2s = sold after years of use. fuji does not have reliable autofocus and what I have learned in three years is that when something in the green frame is not meant, that it's always sharp :D and that everything has to be done several times when taking pictures, because it's not sharp). try a lens with a small aperture on the xt5 or this camera and get inspired in the tests below:
@TRISTRAMY The camera is fine, the autofocus is still way behind. I watched other reviews and it lags behind or just hunts. I'm really disappointed. I bought an X-T30II and I keep getting green confirmation box when it's supposedly focused and a lot of the time they are not. I tried with 5 different lenses and it consistently fails. I'm just done with Fuji until they fix it. The key thing here is that people keep pointing out the confirmation box but that doesn't mean it's focused.
Autofocus and motion tracking accuracy - Sony A6000 is still WAY ahead of the current X-T5, latest firmware. Fact. X-T5 AF is almost unusable for fast action, like birds in flight.
Surely better. More light, better AF. Some people think, they hat to close the aperture for a deeper depth of field. That steals light the AF needs and makes the AF worse. Shoot open.
When the X-M5 was announced, I wasn’t initially interested. I already have my (slightly inconsistent) X-T5 for photography. Also no EVF. But then I started thinking about getting the X-M5 to replace my Sony ZV-1 for content creation as the X-M5 has a bigger sensor, a floppy screen, more features, a touch screen that works, and I can reuse my existing Fuji glass on the X-M5. Bonus! I still have the battery charger from my old X100v! So yeah. Looks good. But I really like the review here and inspired me even more to pick one up when it releases for sale.
Comprehensive video Chris. You put a lot of effort into the videos and it shows….and is greatly appreciated by your viewers. Thank you!! Compared to the X-S20, with the same sensor and processor combo, would you agree that the three advantages the X-M5 has are, price, size factor, and better port positioning (in Vlog mode in particular). For everything else, the X-S20 is better or same. Fair assessment?
@@pal2tech Good point, the inbuilt microphones on the X-M5 are also an improvement. Thanks again!! PS - you gave some advice to me last year when I bought my X-S20, still enjoy it as well. Cheers!

Although I adore your enthusiasm and appreciate your devotion to the super thorough testing of the camera, this "5th all-nighter" comment hit me hard. 😢
I think it's a great camera. I own an old X-M1, several generations old, which was basically an X-A1, but with a Bayer sensor, and I took some great, memorable photos with it. Its successor was needed, and with video quality that I would say is more than acceptable, in line with current trends.
Sure you tested that the AF seems to be more sticky (as seen on the recorded EVF) however, were the images captured sharp? the main issue with the xt5 is not that the AF is not sticky but rather the huge amount of false positives.
I would love to have tested it more, but I had to return the loaner. While AF is a huge deal to many, I didn't want to leave out testing/reviewing the other features specific to that camera. I'm sure somebody will put out a dedicated AF video on it soon.
@@pal2tech Really? You didn't have the time to have a subject walk towards the camera, shot with a narrow depth of field, and check if the images are actually in focus? Seriously?
Please compare the quality of hdmi outputs. How long can the camera stay open at the highest settings? What is the resolution in webcam mode? Thank you.
Great review, hats off. Did you see shadow and highlight option settings ? I use it all the time for jpegs and video and helps to get more detail from shadows and highlights. Also was there NR dial to minus as with other cameras ?
Great lil’ shooter. One thing they missed-limiting the number of custom functions to four which means you can only have four recipes loaded. That’s a fail…
I’m an m43 user, and I’ve been happy with it. This camera could be my “fun” camera, replacing my LUMIX LX100, since LUMIX has given up on that. I shot plenty of Fujichrome in my film days. But how was the AF at f1.4? I mean AF at f5 isn't that much of a problem
Surely better. More light, better AF. Some people think, they hat to close the aperture for a deeper depth of field. That steals light the AF needs and makes the AF worse. Shoot open.
L was waiting for you to do a X M5 video, Thank you.
Does this camera support tethering?
Excellent video and informative, can I please ask what your favourite brand and what's your favourite model for all purpose stills and videos.
Please
Brilliant opening sequence!
Hey can I put filter on the 15-45mm lens kit?
This camera seems really badass! It's the perfect easy going walk around camera!
Absolutely. Would also add that audio is much better on X-M5. But the X-S20 is also an outstanding camera - would agree!
@@pal2tech Good point, the inbuilt microphones on the X-M5 are also an improvement. Thanks again!! PS - you gave some advice to me last year when I bought my X-S20, still enjoy it as well. Cheers!
thank you for creating in depth review XM5, you always create a great review for Fujifilm. 👍
one thing, if i can request to compare in size, with XE4. both are pocketable Fuji.
Just a heads up, I'm on headphones. What's the tapping on the audio? Popping maybe? It just sounds like someone is going up and down the stairs
@@odetas9597 Came here to see if anyone else heard it or I was going crazy. Paused the video a few times thinking someone was stomping around my place.
That aside - helpful review!
Thank you for this review!
Great review, I know that took some time. When you were testing the audio in your studio did you have stab on or off? Thanks new sub!
Great video Chris. Thanks for all the info. Oh can you make a video with just your dancing 🕺. Give some dance tips please.
Although I adore your enthusiasm and appreciate your devotion to the super thorough testing of the camera, this "5th all-nighter" comment hit me hard. 😢
Thanks Chris for all that testing. Dont let the trolls (the hate) move your content.
Is this a Micro Four Thirds canera?
What lens did you use in the high ISO tests?
Helpful, informative, AND entertaining!! Appreciate you as always, Chris
Thanks for this thorough, and informative review.
I think it's a great camera. I own an old X-M1, several generations old, which was basically an X-A1, but with a Bayer sensor, and I took some great, memorable photos with it. Its successor was needed, and with video quality that I would say is more than acceptable, in line with current trends.
Thanks @pal2tech, great review! I guess the "LV" in "Portrait Enhancer LV" stands for "level" 🙂
Hey there’s a guy with a chainsaw and camera at the park scaring the ducks, haha. Great vid thank you. I preordered the x m5 for my wife. Thanks again
Is this basically a modern updated version of the x-a5?
Does this one have bluetooth? Or some sort of using an app so that you can transfer photos directly to phone ? 😊
The "large indicators mode, EVF and LCD" it is presents in the X-M5 ??? There is in my X-T5 , very useful for me ! Many thanks
Great video, but who keeps stomping?
Seriously?
@@cy9nvsshill’s gonna shill
@@cy9nvs he needs to be nice to be part of the loaner list next time...
20:14 where is this from?
I have to say as much as I love the really well made Video, I wish they would release the X-Pro 4.
The review i ve been waiting for,
How does it compare to de X-E3? Its in a similar price range used
Contemplating if it's time to bid adieu to my old xt200 for this one. Any opinions?
Please compare the quality of hdmi outputs. How long can the camera stay open at the highest settings? What is the resolution in webcam mode? Thank you.
looking at a 2nd fujifilm camera for video to compliment my X-H2. Debating on the X-S20 vs X-M5...which would you get?
Great review, hats off.
Did you see shadow and highlight option settings ? I use it all the time for jpegs and video and helps to get more detail from shadows and highlights.
Also was there NR dial to minus as with other cameras ?
Looks much better in black!
Great lil’ shooter. One thing they missed-limiting the number of custom functions to four which means you can only have four recipes loaded. That’s a fail…
how would this compare to the X-T30 ii ?
I’m an m43 user, and I’ve been happy with it. This camera could be my “fun” camera, replacing my LUMIX LX100, since LUMIX has given up on that. I shot plenty of Fujichrome in my film days. The thing I would miss the most is the leaf shutter. If the rumored 1 inch sensor has the leaf shutter, I’ll look at that instead.
Image stabilisation?
How does the autofocus compares to x100v? Thanks
Great video Pal 2 Tech! You are awesome 😎
