    Is this only relevant for Salesforce?

      There are a lot of overarching identity management principles outlined here that are applicable to all identity systems that you're setting up. E.g., Identity Providers vs. Service Providers, authentication vs. authorization, SAML vs. OpenID, etc... That said, there is a lot of Salesforce-specific things here, like "Visualforce Access" as a scope. There are likely more generic Identity and Access Management tutorials out there, but some really good general principles found here.
