- Identity and Access Management (IAM) is one of the core services in Amazon Web Services (AWS). Without IAM, you really don’t have a viable cloud solution. IAM allows you to secure your AWS resources, controlling authentication (the “who”) and authorization (what they can do).
In this video, using a mix of slides and hands-on demos, I’ll provide an overview of IAM and its four main constructs: users, groups, roles and policies (and how to attach them).

This is so well explained -- I'm gonna bing-watch them all and build start to play with AWS!
This is by far the best IAM tutorial I have ever seen!
Oh, I'm so glad!! Thanks for watching! 🙏🌟🤓
I wish all teachers would be as clear as you. Thank you!

Thanks ! your style of teaching is so clear and simple to follow and understand.
That's great to hear! Thanks for watching! 😊
Everything a training video should be... Thank you!
Glad you think so! Thanks for the nice comment!! 🥰🙏🌟
Helpful? Damn... it was perfect. I already knew how to create users, roles, groups, and policies but whenever I needed to go through it I stumbled and fell hard, had to get up and keep going. Now every single piece of it just makes perfect sense. I even suggested your channel to a British friend of mine just to poke him like: see? how a good American accent does it much better? hahaha.
Jokes apart, a side effect to this video was it had me thinking about how important if is to clearly communicate, even/especially for a technically prepared audience; and that, made me think how hard it is to have well prepared team members, ones that truly know the product or service, that are up to the task. Then, I realized that, due to the current dynamic nature of professional relations between workers and companies, that is getting harder and harder to achieve and... maintain. IOW, small companies like mine are probably doomed in this area: training.
Things that make you go hmmm....
OHMYGOODNESS...this might be the nicest comment EVER!!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you SO much (said in my best American accent😂). Seriously, this means a lot. Really appreciate you taking the time to drop a note, and I'm so glad the video made it all "click"! Cheers!!

This is exactly what I needed to understand AWS IAM fundamentals. Your explanations are on point, and your visuals really helped cement the concepts. Great job!
Thanks for the kind words, smokie! 😊 I'm so glad it helped. And love the cat profile pic! 😻
It's an intuitive, in-depth tutorial for getting started with IAM.
You are underrated!
Thanks for the kind words!! 🙏🌟😊
This video saved my butt, and it only took the first 3~4 minutes! The console interface changed a lot in the last two years, but that little kick start was all I needed to get myself unstuck. Subscribed. Many many thanks!
Wohooo--welcome to the channel!! I'm so glad it helped. Yes, the UI changes constantly...it's hard to keep up! Glad you were still able to figure it out. 💪🤓🔥
@@TinyTechnicalTutorials on a related note, I humbly ask for help. I need to learn Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Impala etc etc. The courses I found use Hadoop 2.6 or 2.7 - that's six years ago. The examples no longer work. I'm desperately looking for admin & devel courses that use 3.6.x. Any directions?
Hey @JCCyC! 👋 Gosh, I'm no help there in terms of my own content. Best bet is probably Udemy and search for the topics you need?
Very well structured, plus enlighten explanation, you are a great teacher. Thank you for sharing. +1 :)
Thanks so much for the nice comment! Made my day! 😊
Another excellent class. I love your work.
You're very kind!!! Thanks SO much! 🤓🌟🙏
Great Job in presenting this in an easy way , IAM is a huge topic but this video should cover 80% of the use cases.
Thanks so much, radio dx! It's definitely a huge topic, especially when you're first learning. Glad you found it helpful! :)
Very well done and simple to understand!

Sam - You're crushing it! :) So glad these videos are helping!!
Also, no pressure, but since you're studying for CCP specifically, I do have a full CCP course on Udemy, if you happen to use them: www.udemy.com/course/aws-certified-cloud-practitioner-master-aws-fundamentals/?referralCode=AD10D4D088D57FA1893A. It might give you some better structure than trying to piece together videos here (though you seem to be doing a good job with that too!). :)
Either way, keep studying...it's a great cert to have!
@@TinyTechnicalTutorials Awesome! Wow I'm sure glad to know you have a Udemy course! I'll definitely check that out! Will u have Solution Architect Assoc. videos available in the near future? I thank u so much for the encouragement and keep being awesome and sharing knowledge!
Yes! I'm actually working on a Solution Architect Associate course right now. :) Hoping to release it late November/early December. I'll make a note to share the link back here when it's ready!

I grasp the basic setup of the user pool, but could you delve into how to determine which users should have specific access levels using the identity pool? I'd appreciate it if you could explain how the user pool and identity pool collaborate for Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). Additionally, correct me if I'm mistaken, but even if RBAC is feasible with the identity pool, there seems to be a lack of reliable sources on this topic. @@TinyTechnicalTutorials

Hi! I love your videos.
Do you know if there is a way to specify an idle session timeout value to the users that have access to the console? Thanks!
Thanks for the nice comment, @josefinafrutos7824! 😊 I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! The default timeout for a session is 12 hours, but there are ways to modify that. Here's the documentation to help: docs.aws.amazon.com/singlesignon/latest/userguide/howtosessionduration.html
Hi Amber, This is PURE Gold!! If the authentication is integrated via SSO, where do we call/attach the permissions for the user(s)? If possible, can you please post an overview lesson on IAM with SSO?
Sri! 😊 Pure gold...I love it! 🥰 I definitely need to do a video on SSO. Things have actually changed recently, with the introduction of IAM Identity Center (formerly AWS SSO). This blog probably explains it better than I do, but I'll add this video to my list of topics for future videos: aws.amazon.com/blogs/security/scale-your-workforce-access-management-with-aws-iam-identity-center-previously-known-as-aws-sso/ Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this! This video finally made me realise I was in the wrong place. Apparently, IAM Identity Center != IAM. That was _not clear at all_ from the convoluted documentation. Sigh. I get that these tools are built to be most useful to professional devops teams but I wish they would make it a bit easier for solo devs with little experience in this area.
I agree!! I've had several people ask what the difference is, and it's really not that clear from the documentation. Glad the video helped! 🤓🌟

Can you create a video about AWS fargate? By the way this is on point! I hit subscribed!
Yay! I'm so glad it helped, and welcome to the channel! 🎉👏 I do have a video about ECS here: th-cam.com/video/86Ys0LnMSnY/w-d-xo.html. It doesn't deep-dive on Fargate, but does use Fargate in the demo (as opposed to EC2 launch type). But I'll add Fargate to my list for future dedicated videos. Thanks for the suggestion! 🙏
First: Thank you. I believe this is the fifth AWS video of yours that I have watched and they are enormously helpful.
One question: has the UI changed significantly since you made the video?
Awesome--thanks, NoirRobert! 🥰 So glad the videos are helpful. And yes, the UI has changed quite a bit, and now AWS is pointing people to Identity Center for lots of things. It's on my list to do an updated video...just need to find the time! 😊
this is great a tutorial, one more thing, can a role be assigned to a user or group or they are just assigned to AWS internal services?
Thanks for watching! 🌟🙏🤓 Yes, roles can be assigned to users and groups as well. 👍
THis is really well delivered content.
Do you have a new video for IAM Identity Center.
Its all very confusing... :)
Thanks in advance
Thanks so much, Jamie! 😊 I agree...it IS confusing! I've been meaning to do a video update. I'll bump this topic up my list. In the meantime, if you just need to grant Console access or generate keys, I have some screenshots here on how to do it the "old fashioned" way and get around Identity Center: drive.google.com/file/d/1dIex_pGCfNKGF5JjNPiMVih38OKl5qsw/view?usp=sharing.
I got a lot from your explanation. Thank you for taking the time to put this together.
So if understand correctly: Roles can be assigned *only* to resources like EC2 instances and groups can be assigned to *only* users?
Also, in a hypothetical scenario, would a user with permissions to *only* view/create EC2 instances be able to create an EC2 instance, but assign that a role that has admin permissions, thereby allowing the user to indirectly bypass their permission constraints? Or does AWS protect against such scenarios?
Thanks for the kind words, @adiadiadi! 😊 I'm glad it helped. To answer your questions:
-Roles can be assigned to users or AWS services (like EC2). Here's more detail if you need it: docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/id_roles_terms-and-concepts.html
-User groups can only contain users
-For the hypothetical scenario, the user would need permissions to create roles, which isn't something they'd have by default (but admins do). The permission is called "attach-role-policy." In general, the recommendation is that you DON'T grant attach-role-policy permissions to anyone except admins, so that would be one way to prevent this. But here's a bit more about creating service roles that might be insightful: docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/id_roles_create_for-service.html
Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! 🤓🌟🙏
@@TinyTechnicalTutorials thanks so much!
I'm infatuated with this. I recently enjoyed a similar book, and I was truly infatuated with it. "Mastering AWS: A Software Engineers Guide" by Nathan Vale
Thanks for the heads-up, @Bill0102! I'll check it out. 🤓
Wanted to understand shared accounts. Do you suggest any video for the same or would you be doing one?
Hi Anantha! 😊 Can you clarify what you mean by "shared accounts"? Do you mean a single AWS account with multiple IAM users?
@@TinyTechnicalTutorials in my company someone used this term, honestly didn't had a clue what he is talking abt and bein new to aws I thought shared account is a term.
how do you grant programmatic access in the new/current dashboard? things seemed to have changed a bit since you made this video
figured out thats what "access keys" are for supposedly. still would be nice if you updated this particular video because theres also now an explicit suggestion that says identity centre should be used to grant access to the console (except in limited circumstances?)
Hey @joebazooks! 👋 Yes, it's hard to keep up with all the AWS UI changes! This one is on my list to update. In the meantime, I do have a short video here about Identity Center that should help: th-cam.com/video/gpquYmcpZpo/w-d-xo.html
Great job with your vidoes! Would it be possible to get a roadmap on how to get AWS certified for the Associate Cloud Practiioner? Maybe listing the videos you have already made as well as other resources that can be used to prepare for it?
Hey Brian! :) Funny you should ask...I actually have a Cloud Practitioner exam prep course on Udemy: www.udemy.com/course/aws-certified-cloud-practitioner-master-aws-fundamentals. It's structured around the official AWS exam guide/domains, so should give you everything you need. Hope that helps! If you decide to take it, would definitely love your feedback.
@@TinyTechnicalTutorials Thank you, I will be taking this course, besides the course are there any books or documentation you recommend to be better prepared?
Awesome! :) I really tried to cram all the important things into the course, so in theory, it should give you everything you need. But in addition, I'd recommend going through the official AWS prep stuff:
- Exam guide (make sure you're familiar with all the technologies listed in the appendix): d1.awsstatic.com/training-and-certification/docs-cloud-practitioner/AWS-Certified-Cloud-Practitioner_Exam-Guide.pdf
- AWS sample questions (10 questions/answers; should give you a good sense of the topics/format of the questions on the real exam): d1.awsstatic.com/training-and-certification/docs-cloud-practitioner/AWS-Certified-Cloud-Practitioner_Sample-Questions.pdf
- AWS official practice question set (20 questions/answers; another way to practice): explore.skillbuilder.aws/learn/course/external/view/elearning/12483/aws-certified-cloud-practitioner-practice-question-set-clf-c01-english
And then all of the official AWS documentation, which is at aws.amazon.com/[name_of_the_service], like aws.amazon.com/s3. But Google is your friend too. :)
@@TinyTechnicalTutorials I took the Associate Cloud Practitioner exam today... I passed on the first try! thank you for the amazing course.
BRIAN!!! That's so awesome--congratulations!!! Thanks for letting me know! I'm so glad the course helped! Go celebrate! :)
thank you for sharing, i understand what you went over very much appreciated. however when i am going to create users now I am getting below message. i know its optional but they say its best practices. I just need to add another admin and i think its overkill but is this what you recommend now as well? Thanks again
Provide user access to the AWS Management Console - optional
If you're providing console access to a person, it's a best practice to manage their access in IAM Identity Center.
Hey Adam! Thanks for watching and for the nice comment! 😊 Yes, they've changed the UI a little bit since I created this video. I haven't had a chance to create an update. AWS is recommending using Identity Center if you need to give someone console access, but you don't HAVE to. Here are some screenshots to walk you through an alternate flow to do it the "old-fashioned" way: drive.google.com/file/d/1dIex_pGCfNKGF5JjNPiMVih38OKl5qsw/view?usp=sharing. Hope that helps!
My friend and I are interested in switching from our current careers into a PAM/I AM career as our other friend has opportunities available. Is this a solid resource to learn as a beginner or do you recommend another video. Thank you.
Hey GG! 😊 Sorry for the delayed response. This is good for beginners, but won't teach you enough to get a job doing PAM/IAM. You'll probably want a dedicated course, and ideally with some hands-on exercises. I just did a quick search on Udemy and found a few things (haven't validated any of them though): www.udemy.com/courses/search/?src=ukw&q=iam+pam. For AWS specifically, they have a Security specialty certification: aws.amazon.com/certification/certified-security-specialty/. This goes into a lot more than PAM/IAM, but might be worth looking into some of their study materials too. Good luck! 💪
Will you provide lectures in Azure in the future?
Hi Yu! I might do Azure videos at some point (I taught Azure in a previous life). Just need to find time to do everything I want to do! 😊 But thanks for the suggestion...it's good to know that people are interested in that.
Hello, what are the certifications and steps for a beginner venturing to become an identity access management analyst?
thank you
Hi BillsReviews! 😊 For any role with AWS, it's good to get the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification as a baseline. This covers core concepts and services (compute, networking, storage, etc.). (Shameless plug: I do have a prep course for that if you're interested...use code FRIENDS10 for 10% off: academy.zerotomastery.io/a/aff_n20ghyn4/external?affcode=441520_lm7gzk-d ).
There's not a specific certification for IAM, but the Certified Security Specialty would be a good idea (it covers security more broadly): aws.amazon.com/certification/certified-security-specialty.
Hope that helps, and good luck! 💪
