Conveniences aren't always really convenient. Because you put things off until you have to do it. Instead of staying up with it. Good job you guy's .. we have learned the same.
And those big bins make for great soaking tubs for those heavy soiled items. Also, you can use a milk crate turned upside down for a scubbing board for those heavier denim items. My grandmother washed all of her clothes in the bathroom in buckets with a dedicated plunger, a bucket and a clothesline, with a washing machine in the garage! She didn't want to stretch or rip her delicates or elastic. I use one of those As Seen On TV spinning mop buckets in the tub. Someone left it in their trash, so I rescued it. Fill with clothes, some soap and water, agitate, go to work, come home, agitate with plunger, place in spinner and pump it up! Done. For large items, its the laundromat once a month. But I like the idea of the wringer.
Loved this as I am like minded and on my journey to this life. I have a great tip for you guys also for the cloths you store on hangers. Just put them on the hangers on you line and save a little time at least.
I've watched a lot of your videos, very informative and interesting, but what I've noticed is you two seem to have a lot of fun and I'm sure a lot of hard work, but I would love a life like that. Almost there, im looking for land to buy in New Mexico...
Hi guys, Just a thought... Get a plastic container (or 2 liter bottles, a collapsable water cube, etc.) that seals and fill it full of rocks/sand and put it in the wash tub. That way you can have deeper water for smaller loads without wasting water. Just like the brick in the toilet tank trick. Love your videos! Keep up the great work and keep living the dream!
Jessica's look as she pulls the laundry out of the tiny trailer washer is priceless. Totally out of a drama filled 1932 black and white film of some gal that is totally hating her life. LOL.
Country folks in South America and the Caribbean used rain water to wash by hand .. their clothes are sparkling white Great off grid washing system .. amazing video Jim and Jessica Have a good weekend
Give you guys big time credit for the way you do laundry!!....Id have to have a big enough solar to run a window A/C and an Rv water pump with a washer. Something similar to G-Bears....Heres his channel name "G Bear's Off Grid Ways-A Homestead In The Desert". My ultimate goal is to retire minimally out in the desert and be free of the GRID but still have a few of the comforts of modern life much like G-Bear. But you guys keep doing your thing as it gives many of us an education and some entertainment!!
We actually do have quite the solar set up. It can handle quite a bit of draw. We could easily handle a washing machine. It's the water pressure we don't have. We'll probably set something up eventually when we establish something more permanent. Check out our solar set up here. th-cam.com/video/it2kLnfhbtg/w-d-xo.html
Whats that book called? "Chop wood, carry water." I think. There is definitely value in tasks like these that are physical and repetitive and simple. Sometimes in a busy life, these are the perfect excuses to slow down for a minute and give your mind a chance to process and chill. Great system!
Hi guys!!! This is great! Really gets one thinking how much bad things are going into our bodies and our planet. Why so many people are getting sick now in days, so many medical problems. We have an autistic daughter and had to look at soaps at one time and realized how many chemicals are in so many and how they can hurt us. Thank you for sharing this awesome video. Have a wonderful weekend!!! 😃💐💚💚💚💚💚💚
Hello From a urban homestead in suburban Australia, How does the ringing and washing go with large bed sheeets blankets and towels? Your channel is amazing and calming thank you so inspiring
People have washed their clothes in washing machines, then put them in a bucket, and plunger washed them. The 'clean' wash from the machine, still had a lot of dirt that came out with the plunger. The plunger forces the soapy water through the fabric, and breaks up the body oil.
I need one of those blue plungers! I've been using me hands and some clothes to agitate the water or doing the old grape wine method and walked on the clothes in the bin. 😂😂😂😂😂
I had to do my laundry by hand in the tub for about 4 months at one point (wringing out by hand, too). It's actually a good skill to have. But I love your hand-crank wringer!! It was my favorite part of doing laundry with my grandma and her old Maytag wringer-washer.
Thanks Cathy! I think it will be a good experience and a good skill to develop. It might make us appreciate a machine more if we get one down the line.
Hand washing clothes is no joke. It’s very hard work to get them clean 🧼! Trying to wash 👖, towels, and blankets is extremely challenging. They sell a small compact Washers that does a great job. Reusing the water is key 🔑
Mind totally blown. Never gone down a rabbit hole that deep regarding laundry. 🤣🤣 I’m at 2200 elevation. We had a clothes hanger a while back but it was really sun bleaching our clothes. I want to start up again but next time we will do it on the porch in the shade, but I have to dog proof it first. Great video 😁👍👍
The Kids Use to jump on the clothes, Like Stomping Grapes, It was Fun. But, She Love her New way of Washing Clothes.. Lol Thanks so much for Sharing..Happy Friday🌻
Hey guys great vid, as usual ! When Winter comes, gravity feed that hose input through a couple of rolls of black poly-pipe and it will warm that water up real nice.
You two are amazing. I loved how you talked philosophically and spiritually about the simple life. Really beautiful. It was also a fascinating look into how things were done in the past. I have a wash board in my laundry room that used to be my grand mother's. I will see it with fresh eyes now. Might even use it for my hand-washing. Thank you for another wonderful video! 💖💕🌷🌳🍃XO
Yup, reminds me of simpler times out on the ranch before grandma got her first electric washer w/wringer attached. Those were good times (as a kid, that is) and getting the drying down off of the clothesline before a rain. . .or being introduced to a willow switch! And the smell of air dried laundry is amazing as you said. Beats anything thrown into an electric dryer to make your clothes 'smell' natural. Right!
I’m glad y’all got laundry 🧺 done and everything worked great for y’all. There is a since of pride one feels by recycling being self sufficient! It’s unexplainable but undeniable!! God Bless
Looks like a great setup 👍 scrubbing clothes, definitely will get them cleaner, love the solar dryer, that's the only way to dry clothes, nice and fresh
WOW, YOU CONVINCED ME TO DITCH MY MACHINE! cleaner clothes, less stress on me and environment, healthy outdoor air and view. I think I need a vacation to come do your laundry LOL 🤣 GREAT video and love entertainment. Love and prayers
Good stuff. When I grew up my mother hand washed the clothes in a galvanized tub. She also used the scrub board and line dried the clothes. I sure miss the smell of fresh, line dried, sheets. As a side note, children can bathe in the wash water after mom was done. Yes, I said children. Can you imagine today if children were asked to share bath water? No, I can't either.
Jim you are always entertaining! Those little plastic washers are way too small and expensive for a just plastic, I can see the aggravation rather than agitation. 👍❤❤❤ great video you two!
Here's a few ideas for you. A five gallon bucket (dark colored) sitting in the sun will give you warm to hot water for laundry use. So would a fifty-five gallon drum. Now that I think of it, so would a 4" piece of black pipe on top of the rain roof. The longer the pipe, the more water available. Add a spigot and your in business. It should work just like solar showers. Also, your clothes won't fade if they are hung under your rain roof.
Love this idea! Washing clothes is like washing dishes, clean as you go and it’s not a chore :) I just wish I had a place to hang dry during our many rainy days here
Great video. Editing was great as well as the information you 2 shared. That isn't a bad setup at all. Much better than just hand scrubbing using friction alone in a 5 gallon bucket. Not that I would know anything about that. Boy can little girls get filthy!
Thank you for providing your experiences. It could be usefull also for urban people facing black-outs in the future. Can you give some hints where to get the devices you used for washing (plunger, wringer, wash board)? Greatings from Germany!
Whoah!.....the innuendo is was thick in this one! LOL You guys should get a banjo and big jug to go with the washboard. You can make some "off grid" music too! Excellent video, guys. You put a lot of work into this one and it shows. Very informative and great presentation. Love it!! Have a great weekend!
It can be faster. For a lot of clothes the machine will win out, but being out here and getting as dirty as we do, I don't think the machine can keep up.
I enjoyed the re-enactments. That must have been a HEAVY laundry basket that you were lugging in. lol But, I think that is an awesome setup! It would be a little tougher for us, because we're washing for 6. Then again, that looks like a great chore for the kids! Hmmm....
Nice job with the video and the information. Definitely a great system for saving water. We love to dry our clothes outdoors when able. Great point about just slowing down and feeling things. It really is a good way to appreciate life in general. Have a great weekend my friends!
This was an awesome video. So informative, so funny, you two really put together great videos. You have a nice setup for cleaning clothes, very impressed. I am glad I did not waste money on that little tumbler washer. Thanks for sharing your videos, you two & Crew are amazing.
Hello Jessica and Jim, love your video today. I actually talked a little bit about hand washing clothes. I suggested in my video that the wringer was an absolute must have. Thanks for sharing your story. 💕. NonnaGrace. If you have time to lean you have time to clean. It is possible to get the fingers pinched but there is a release on top. With it a hand oppression, no electricity it is highly unlikely . Yes the sun is a great Whitening for whites. 💕. NonnaGrace
Lol! Yes the if there's time to lean there's time to clean is another good one. There's a huge advantage to hand cleaning I believe. Thanks Nonnagrace!
Hilarious guys , loved it, my great grandma had a mangle (what you called a wringer) and what is called a dolly tub here in England. You could always leave the really dirty stuff overnight 😀 . Loving hearing the birds singing in the background for you both 😊 plus i made some castile liquid wash ... it was pretty good 😊
Very nice set up! You guys are so entertaining as you go through your system... love it! I agree with all you’ve said & those totes make great bath tubs too! (A little experience with that here... 😉😁). Now I need to get me a ringer... envy!!
omg what was in that laundry basket you were lugging around? Bricks? LOL!!! Jess not everyone looks as good as you waiting for laundry to be done! CAYG. LOL!!! I agree, I love line dried clothes!!!!
Jess turns everything into a Zen experience
Conveniences aren't always really convenient. Because you put things off until you have to do it. Instead of staying up with it. Good job you guy's .. we have learned the same.
I was always taught to hang clothes on the line inside out to prevent the sun bleaching colour.
Definitely a good way to do it. Thanks for that Julie!
I found that the sun makes things brighter. Hot water ruins your colors.
Yes, the thick seam material and pockets are on the inside. They dry quickly on the outside.
Love it! We’ve wondered about those tiny little hand crank washers…they definitely don’t look worth it. Thanks for sharing your set up!
And those big bins make for great soaking tubs for those heavy soiled items. Also, you can use a milk crate turned upside down for a scubbing board for those heavier denim items. Absolutely!
Love the Cactus wren singing at 16:28. Such a classic desert sound. Hoping to hear more of that as I move to the desert myself.

You two a cool couple. I do my laundry by hand too. It does bring you down to your roots. Good luck with the water harvesting. 👍
Thank you! That's what we were thinking as well.
Jessica's look as she pulls the laundry out of the tiny trailer washer is priceless. Totally out of a drama filled 1932 black and white film of some gal that is totally hating her life. LOL.
The music set the scene well

amazing video Jim and Jessica

Ooh, very cool! That's why rainwater is the best. Thanks for that insight Dan!
Jessica, you are such a patient saint of a person. Jim just cracks me up!

One of your best videos. Good job guys!
Living off grid and going to laundromat for 5 years now this is VERY EXCITING to me! I'm so excited to get moved and have a laundry set up 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Awesome! Yes, it's work doing it by hand, but I think way better than a laundromat.
So nice to be outside to do your chores !!!
I hear that Irene! Any excuse to be outside.😁
Excellent post !!!!
I feel guilty for not buying a ticket to watch.....
Informative , Yet Epic.entertainment 😅😆😅😆😅
😀Thank you! We had to have fun making a video about laundry. 😆

Yes, indeed. It's a little scary all the things that go into the products that we buy. Sometimes simpler is better.
Thanks you two!
That Maytag man is going to be really lonely in your neck of the woods...wait a minute...you don't have woods!
The long lost art of hand washing your clothes. I did notice that the editing was really cool. 😎😎😎😎
Thanks Allen! Definitely stepping up our game!!😃🙌

Washing your own laundry is SOOOO fun. Lol. I really like your set up.

@@ourselfreliantlife I have been hand washing my own laundry in buckets for 3 years. I have 2 videos on it.

Lol, right! This should be easy peasy!😁
Brilliant. God bless you guys!!!🙋♀️
Great video guys! I would recommend lowering the wash tubs. It makes using the plunger much easier and more effective.
Thanks Lisa! That's probably a wise move. We can still adjust it thankfully. 😃

Thanks for going down the laundry rabbit hole with us G!

Hey guys great vid, as usual ! When Winter comes, gravity feed that hose input through a couple of rolls of black poly-pipe and it will warm that water up real nice.
Good thinking! Thank you!
Simple is good plus you now have the ability to store more water and your not running into town and spending $
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! That's what we were thinking as well.

So true! Bahh ha ha!

Cool set up! I like the not bending over part! Sure saves the back!

Wonderful! But how does it compare to washing your clothes in the river with a good rock?
Great video as always . The tubs can double as a spa or hot tub. Have a great and safe weekend.
Thank you! It might be a little tight for a tub though.😆👍
Awesome set up. One of those wash boards has been in my prep to buy list.

Thanks so much Oppe! We appreciate the feedback.
I hadn't intended on that innuendo. I should really be more conscious of what I'm doing on camera.🤣🤣👍

you both do a great job on explaining things. I do imagine though clothes would come cleaner by hand. probably faster than a wash machine also
It can be faster. For a lot of clothes the machine will win out, but being out here and getting as dirty as we do, I don't think the machine can keep up.
