Inside Belarus, Europe's Last Dictatorship

  • In October of last year, Alexander Lukashenko swept to his fifth term as the Belarusian president, marking 22 years in power. Despite the elections being marred by allegations of fraud, the EU has this month lifted travel sanctions against Lukashenko's government, as a reward for good behavior - the elections passed without a repeat of 2010’s violent crackdown against opposition parties. But critics argue that the EU is making a dangerous endorsement of an autocratic regime that still employs the use of internet surveillance, censorship, and intimidation to exert control over its people and press.
VICE News meets the Belarusian journalists and bloggers struggling to tell the truth about Belarus in this post-soviet dictatorship.
In BLACKOUT, a series made possible by Jigsaw, VICE News takes viewers across the globe, from Pakistan to Belarus, to examine technology's role in the ongoing fight for free expression.

They work as independent (i.e. unlicensed) journalists, at illegal (i.e. any non-progoverment) rallies and they're the first ones to get the beating and fines. And of course the police keeps their records. 2 - I don't think the police here is smart enough to look through TH-cam videos in foreign languages, but as mentioned above they don't really need to

As it turns out, Phoebe (Friends actress Lisa Kudrow) went to Belarus between 2005-2010 to uncover what happened to her Jewish great-grandmother, and found out she had perished in the Holocaust, with the Nazis' 1941 "Operation Barbarossa" invasion of the Soviet Union. Bro... Says you, an outsider who has no real idea what's going on... It's easy to film miserable or poor people and then blame the system. But then you realize those people have been living like rats and parasites. Not studying, not working,... Just drinking, partying and telling everybody to F off. That's cool and all but just don't cry afterwards, you made your choice despite all the warnings and all the people trying to stop you. Do you have ANY idea how many Ukrainians are on vacation while their country is being invaded?? They are at beaches, resorts, hotels, drinking, partying,.... Not giving 1 flying F! And we in the West pooring them with millions (even billions!) of $$$ and guns... How stupid and dumb are we. In fact that's EXACTLY how they view us... Dumb and stupid. Yeah I would be "grateful" too.... But those things cost others to make! Like money, resources and vacations for example.
You think they are genuine... Seems like you never REALLY met one of them. It's easy to smile and say thank you... But that doesn't mean they are "genuine". That can also be how MF's steal from you! A life with dignity is not exactly a Right... It's also a choice! You think those people want to study, work and dedicate their lifes to the greater good?? Actually they don't! They just want to live out of others... Work, effort and money. THAT'S their mindset and system. You can't tell me that a drunk or a whore deserves dignity... They don't even have that for themselves!

Some of the clothes are in pristine condition but undoubtedly have an 80s vibe, they are not purely from the 80s, they have clear influences.
