Invasion of the Bunny Snatchers is a Bugs Bunny short subject directed by Greg Ford and Terry Lennon and released in 1992. The cartoon was intended for theatrical release but eventually aired as part of the television special Bugs Bunny's Creature Features. Its premise is modeled after the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Can the next one be of that General Grievous from Star Wars Clone Wars? (The Genndy Tartovosky one). General Grievous made his debut there and back then, he was actually intimidating and fucking terrifying. He actually kills Jedi, rarely speaks and for once, doesn’t run away like a coward but rather chases down his prey until he’s either got them or if they escape. Seriously, check it out. I know it’s not an episode, it’s a part of an episode but please count it.

I remember a toon I saw when I was a kid. A cartoon dog was trying to evade a flea. The flea was an unstoppable monster that eventually ate the dog. That was the first time in my life that I felt some sense of inescapable dread as a kid. It left a real impression on me, a disturbed one.

Maybe this is like a case of fridge horror where the cartoon itself isn't scary, but maybe some people put themselves.im that position themselves. Like imagine you were abducted and replaced with a replica. Image 5he damage a replacement would do and the harm it would cause. And when it was done and you were freed.yher would be people who would mistake you for said come and may even have some kind of vendetta against you for something you didn't know you did. Just kinda one of those scary in hindsight kinda deals. ...and yeah it is kinda scary to be replace by someone who would give you a had name or make the people you love hate you.

The "scariest" part I found about the episode was during the Pod-Bugs scene or atleast the implications. The fact that the impostor was trying to outright kill Bugs lead me to believe that the other characters that had been replaced were actually dead. Pretty unnerving when I was a kid.

I saw this in a motel room when I was a little kid, and can confirm it was creepy as hell to me. It's the body-snatcher's eyes: they're so lifeless, and unblinking, and somehow that makes them incredibly menacing. Plus, there's the idea of your replacement murdering you in your sleep with an ax...

The thing I always found so disturbing about this cartoon was the fact that there's no explanation at the end- you keep waiting for Marvin the martian or even Hazel to show up with some sort of 'I'll get you next time, rabbit!' but then /nothing/. It's creepy, and it leaves the viewer with an air of uncertainty.

This gets a lot darker if you consider the part where fake Bugs picks up the ax. He wasn't trying to take over Bugs's body, he was planning to murder Bugs and take his place. If *that* is what happened to the others...that's pretty dark. And it makes you question the ending where they're all back somehow.

    • @Gabreya
      @Gabreya 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

+aprilfrenzy EXACTLY! I always suspected that the other clones had murdered Elmer, Sam, and Daffy which explains Clone Bugs trying to murder him. Also, if you notice the scenes where Bugs leave Sam and Daffy, individually, to go to his next destination, when the strange carrots start twitching, Sam and Daffy have horrified looks on their faces. It’s almost as if they kind of knew that those carrots were dangerous.

He then manages to tie up the dog in his own sack.

I reverse predict my kid self would find this in the uncanny valley sector as I love animation and cartoons even today, and cheap stuff just rubbed me the wrong way as if they hate me or don't care. Like comparing an expensive amazingly delicious ice cream sundae with warm chocolate sauce with a caramel aftertaste and daime and cream made vanilla ice cream, to those cheap white packages of wine gum that were hard to chew, lacked flavor and tasted bitter or weird. It was kind of candy but you almost had to force yourself to eat it or try to enjoy it. Hated it.

the set up of the characters beign replaced by copies for seemingly no reason, and we don't even see HOW they get replaced
the way the carrots are drawn at times (especially during the scene where the fake Bugs is created)
The fact that the fake bugs was trying to murder Bugs Bunny
Some of the music and set design can make a creepy mood
and finally, and what I found creepiest about this short, Daffy Duck suddenly getting a clutch cargo mouth and possibly that more detaied mouth he also gets

That episode was straight up savage on its ending. Billy, Mandy and Irwin turn into embryos before completely poofing out of existence and Grim does nothing to help them until he suddenly realizes that he's unable to turn over his own hourglass which is quite large and he just helplessly waves goodbye to the audience before being poofed out of existence.
"Attack of the Clowns" from Billy and Mandy while mainly funny, does have the rather disturbing paper mache clown that Grim brought to life that eats them at the end of the episode.

  • @UltraGalaxyify

The reasons why it creeped me out is because:
    1. The cheaper animation style: I found them to be rather unsettling as a kid when I first saw this, I think Elmer Fudd was the one that creeped me out the most when I first saw him because you can tell that it's different, that it's, for lack of a better word, "wrong" in the way that he's made.
    2. The soundtrack: This is another reason why I found this to be creepy. The soundtrack used, ranging from the piano score(which the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers also used and was probably a type of homage to said movie, surprised you didn't bring that up) from when Bugs encounters the carrots, to the creepy theramin music when pod-Elmer first appears. One thing I noticed that adds a lot to the atmosphere is music, and I think it was handled pretty well in this short.
    3. Pod-Bugs: Not just pod-Bugs himself, but the whole scene where he comes to life and tries to kill Bugs with an ax. I'm surprised you didn't touch on this a whole lot, although you did cover the segment where he's coming to life so I won't repeat it here, but watching it do that Frankenstein-like walk, blank expression and the just-dots-for-eyes, to the fire ax, and to the Bugs's bed just adds another layer of creepy. Like you said, these were made to be a sort of parody of bad animation, and there are bad animated scenes/shows that sometimes delve deep into an almost "uncanny valley" territory where we would be unsettled by it. It also made use of shooting from pod-Bugs's perspective to where he's walking to Bugs's bed and he taps him on the shoulder, and we get this great low-angle shot of pod-Bugs saying Bugs's classic line in his pod-like way while holding a fire ax! You actually talked about low-angle shots in your review of "Claws For Alarm", and I'm surprised you didn't talk about it here, it would have been a good call back in my opinion.
You might not have found it dark or creepy, but the rest of us sure as hell have, ya stinker!

The things that creeped me out as a kid were:
      1. We don't know what happened to sam, elmer, or daffy while their duplicates are active. Bugs' duplicate tried immediately to kill him, so what happened to them?
      2. It's never explained why nudnik made the fake toons in the first place, or why they were so poorly made.
Basically, it was the "nothing is scarier" trope to me.

As a kid, I was always extremely sensitive to the atmosphere a show or a movie would convey (animated or live-action). I found so many "funny scary" moments GENUINELY scary, so I understand why some might see this cartoon as dark, scary or creepy.
When you watch Ren & Stimpy, you get into a state of mind where creepy stuff is welcome and expected. When you watch Looney Tunes, you expect a jolly, funny and warm atmosphere. These weird moments in this short instead give you a sever "uncanny valley" feeling, as if you just entered a parallel dimension and nothing is stable and it never really feels like home. And this cartoon starts being creepy in its atmosphere as soon as you see they are rushing through the usual routine - it's not natural. And then when Daffy does his stuff, that really pushes the envelope. :)
Honestly, I'm a bit happy that I didn't see this as a kid because now i see just how hilarious it is, instead of being traumatized by it. :D

I’ve always found this episode both hilarious and creepy AF. The reason why a lot of people find it more dark is due to the uncanny valley and uncanny behavior that the clones give off even in animation. Yes, it’s hilarious because of how purposefully badly it’s supposed to look. But at the same time, it gives you an unsettling feeling when the characters don’t look like and behave like themselves. The Daffy Clone especially showcases this. Also, when Bugs comes upon those strange carrots and his clone emerging from one of those carrots, the piano music gives it a weird, eerie vibe. Thank you for making a video about this episode.

I feel like why people consider this short dark isn't that it's supposed to be dark but more of how it unintentionally came across to children at the time.
To be honest, the humor of the short seems to be lost on children, especially ones not really paying attention to the actual craft of animation. That is something that you end up picking up when you're older and more experienced.
Since that joke is lost, I think the audience gets a different vibe from it. Remembering my experience with this short when I was younger, this short was creepy and unsettling because it was "wrong." It wasn't how Looney Tunes was "supposed" to be. It really felt like the show was hijacked and we were watching something like an alien invasion take place on air. A child's imagination really can make things more fantastical like that.
Course, that can me be talking out of my butt and I was the only one to see it as such.. Yet, I do vividly remember that feeling because I didn't get the comedy behind the short way back when. Probably being raised on X-Files didn't help either.

    Rugrats “Mr. Friend”

I suggest the Ed Edd n Eddy episode "the Day The Ed Stood Still", it's not particularly dark but it is a great episode that satirizes the horror genre and monster movie tropes, and seeing how the kids react to a monster is interesting. That or the special where the kids of the cul-da-sac think they're being invaded by aliens or the Halloween special.

@@salaga6574 This episode actually is pretty dark for an Ed Edd N' Eddy short. Ed, who's normally known for being goofy and hilarious acts EXACTLY like a monster from one of his horror movies. The kids of the cul de sac go missing one by one, and we actually see what's going on from Ed's point of view as the monster. We don't actually get a glimpse of what Ed looks like in his monster costume until close to the end of the episode--it's pretty convincing looking.

To me the reason why its quite scary is due to how baxter stockman underwent an operation to get his body back but the hope and happiness for him is taken away when he starts deteriating due to the unknown error he made making him into his own frankenstien monster. He had a constant reminder/sees the illusion of his dead mother who cared for him showing him fall into a pit of insanity. He was basically a constant decomposing terminator trying to disect april O'niel of which the turtles triedand eventually succeeds to help out april but in the end baxter falls into the river being swallowed up in the river

Syncro-Vox (sometimes spelled Synchro-Vox) is a filming method that combines static images with moving images, the most common use of which is to superimpose talking lips on a photograph of a celebrity or a cartoon drawing.
Clutch Cargo, along with fellow Cambria shows Space Angel, and Captain Fathom were the first to use this style of animation.
