  • What should I do with a puppy who eats poop? How do I deal with a fussy eater? Is it better to have two Cavaliers than just one? Why is the white fur on my dog's paws turning red? How do you stack a dog at a dog show? Answers to these burning questions and others are here ...

    When I met my husband he had two cavaliers, I did not know anything about the breed and feel in love. When they passed away we waited a few years and got two more, then two years later we got two more. The four of them get along so well and are my shadows. The two new puppies are half siblings to one of our other cavs we have. Never thought I would have four cavaliers. The new puppies are litter mates but have really bonded to not only me but my husband as well

    Glad you're healing. That cut made me shudder.
    Couple of comments:
    - for help removing staining on white fur you can use a bluing shampoo for dogs and/or cats.
    - for stacking, i loved it when my dogs walked into a stack. I can't remember how i trained that 😂. (I was a junior handler). One tip i always give people who are learning to show is when the judge looks in your dog's ears/eyes/mouth don't you look. You know the dog is clean/has the correct bite. Keep out of the way: you're an accessory to the dog: you add a little something but can be removed and not missed 😂.
    I usually work with teens, so sorry if I'm too basic or silly

    I find that having one each: Cavalier with a cat! They get along so well, and the cat is the boss so there is no competing for dominance. But watch out for the litter box buffet 🤢

      😂 my Cavalier Gypsy liked cats farrrr too much. She wanted to kiss them with her teeth’s! Or at the very least chase them. You could actually see her brain disconnect when she saw a cat and she would lose her furry mind! Note: no cats were ever harmed but I can’t vouch for the health of the squirrels she encountered.

    Thank you I appreciated these comments in “ask the breeder 12” Especially the “stacking” tutorial. I agree Apple is such a pretty girl glad she is going back in the ring. Here is a question for you, most cavaliers I’m familiar with really drop the coat after puppies and it takes a long time to get it back. Apple seems to still have a very full coat, why is that? Is it because she really didn’t end up nursing Sherlock very much?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It makes sense that if she didn't lactate normally, then she would also not produce the hormones that cause a blown coat.

    I really enjoy watching your channel. And I want to thank you for taking the time to educate & entertain us newbies! (Well, not everyone may be a newbie). Last year I posted the sad news that my beloved Cavalier Barkley had passed away at 16.5 years. I was devastated. Now, little more than a year later I have began searching for another. Barkley did work as a therapy dog (but really, don’t all Cavaliers? 😂) but this time around I am interested in getting involved in showing and/or some other competitive activity to feed my obsession with the breed. My question is twofold; first how do you go about getting involved with showing your dog? And secondly how do I go about selecting a puppy? I am fairly well versed in how to select an ethical breeder (so much harder than it should be), but I have no idea what to look for in a puppy. Sorry for the long winded post and thanks for any advice you can offer. 😊 (kisses for Apple & Sherlock as well).

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You should first try to find a reputable breeder near you, who is willing to act as a mentor. When you are ready, you could purchase a puppy from that breeder that you could begin showing. Since the puppy would remain intact, you would probably have to co-own with the breeder. A good breeder would help you select the puppy; if his/her name stays on the dog as a co-owner, the advice should be impartial. You could also watch some of my videos on evaluating puppies, such as the "What I Like About Jamba" video.

    A word about coprophagia (the 25-cent word for poop eating). The "additives" you can give your dog to make the poop "taste bad" don't work well at all. I wouldn't waste my money on those. A poor diet, can indeed, increase the likelihood of the dog eating poop, but a study found no difference between dogs that were intentionally mal-nourished and dogs that were not mal-nourished in poop eating--dogs in both groups consumed poop equally. So diet isn't usually a factor (but do, indeed, feed your dog a complete nutritionally sound diet). Your vet can give you tips on the best food for your dog. Unfortunately, the only way to really stop the dog from eating poop is pick it up immediately after it's deposited! Coprophagia is called a self-reinforcing behavior. Dogs just seem to enjoy it--no matter how disgusting we think it is. By the way, we see both males and females eat poop (not just females that have been mothers), females that have never had a litter can eat poop, both intact and altered dogs will eat poop. Dogs, it seems, are non-discriminatory when eating poop. Many dogs apparently enjoy consuming the poop of other species. Many dogs find rabbit poop a wonderful snack, horse poop is quite tasty, and I have it on good authority from a fellow trainer who lives in Alaska that moose poop is a real delicacy. So don't be surprised if you notice your puppy chowing down on not just dog poop, but other poop as well. Yes, we humans find it really gross, but the things you can do are to (a) pick up after your dog immediately, (b) teach a "leave it" cue so that if you see your dog about to enjoy a rather tasty pile of poop, you can say "leave it" and the dog will do so, and (c) discourage your dog from licking you in the face. There are some good videos out there on how to teach "leave it" and it's beyond the scope of a comment to describe how to teach it, so look on You Tube for how to teach a dog to "leave it". Make certain the trainer is using positive methods!!

Mine does,especially from mind to her hind area..It is very thick and not sleek.My husband wants to get her shaved,I do not.I heard if you shave them it will grow back worse and the will loose the longer hairs. 🎉Ask the breeder🎉 from Singapore
    My Cavalier is about 7 months old now, he was able to sleep alone well in the playpen since he arrived our house from 4 month old. However since last week, he suddenly started to bark very loud and constantly in the mid of the night. I checked the camera and nothing went wrong. He would bark again after he woke up again…it’s super noisy and my neighbor complained to me…😢 in the end we let him come into my bedroom and he slept well after he stayed with us. Is this something related to separation anxiety? P.S., He could sleep alone well in the playpen in the daytime when he needs rest

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      They are gregarious by nature, so they will always want to be with you. Ours all come into the bedroom with us at night.
      The 7 month old can sleep in a crate in your bedroom - if he barks or cries to come out in the middle of the night, take him out JUST to pee/poop, and bring him right back to the crate for the rest of the night. No playing, no treats, no reward for waking you up.

    Question for a future ask the breeder: I see you take your beautiful cavs to dog shows on a fairly regular basis. How do I find out about shows? I’d love to be a spectator and soak it all in. I live in Charlotte, NC and the only show near me was in Asheville and the information posted about the show was awful so I didn’t go. Any tips?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The specialty shows run by our breed club are posted on the website, www.ckcsc.org. They will be back in Ashville in December, and it's a nice venue. At a specialty like that, you'll get to see 50 to 100 excellent Cavaliers, and meet some of the best breeders from all across the country.
      You can also locate AKC all-breed shows, which run constantly all over the country. You'll see a much smaller number of Cavaliers, but those shows are plentiful and easy to get to. For example, I went to infodog.com (great source for show information), clicked on Show Info > Shows By State, chose NC, and a whole list came up. I scrolled down until I saw an "AB" in the Type column, meaning all breed, and I see there is a show very close to you in Concord on the 14th. Click on Judging Program, and you'll find that there are 19 Cavaliers entered in Ring 9 at 9:15. Just a word of warning - not all of the entries will be top-notch, and many of the handlers at these shows are pros, not breeders. But a great chance to see what goes on at shows.

      @@chaskat35 Thank you so much for the detailed answer!! Concord is very close to Charlotte, so I may check it out. And the show in Asheville coming in December was the same one I wasn't sure about last December. I'll make sure to go this year.

    Hi Charlie! Appreciate you taking the time with the series. I’m looking at OFA results for hips, eyes, cardiac, and patella on a parent that was born in 2021. It looks like hips were done at 8mo, eyes 13mo, patella 16mo, and cardia at 17mo in Nov 2022. Should I be expecting more recent health testing for a puppy in 2024 or would you consider this to be a green flag or red flag? Thank you for your time! @chaskat35

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The standard among all the good breeders I know (and I know a lot of them!) is that testing is meaningful only if done AFTER the dog is over 2 years old, and within one year of the breeding. OFA won't even certify hip results if the dog is under 2 years of age. Ask the breeder if the testing has be updated.
