    Tag looks at the woodpile as if to remind you that it’s still winter, and she would like to nap in front of a fire. Tag is a champion at napping.

    That is a fascinating and entertaining video! Keep them coming - even though we have had Cavs for 40 years we always learn something new. Many Thanks... (p.s. there is something about your dogs, they are some of the most interactive Cavs we have ever seen - even TAG in her own way - perhaps the level of human owner involvement / love. Very nice.)

    Your videos are great! Question - Please provide some information about keeping the backyard and landscaping safe for dogs - how do you keep them out of the flowerbeds and safe from harmful plants/pests? Do they ever dig?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cavaliers are not generally known as a digging breed, and I can think of only 1 or 2 in over 40 years who did any digging. Even then, they just tried to get to the other side of the fence, not to dig up plants. We have a decorative 18-inch high fence around our garden area; the only one who can jump it is Apple, and she doesn't bother with the plants, she just likes to explore. Our lawn is synthetic turf, and we've had it for 10 years with hardly any wear and tear. It's also much more impervious to parasites that thrive more in natural soil and plants. We have secure fencing on all sides, so that it is virtually impossible for a dog to get out.

    Thank you for this video (I’m been fan of your TH-cam for years since I decided to have Cavalier). I have a 2.5 year old Cavalier from a wonderful breeder. She feeds kibbles to her Cavaliers. I used to feed kibbles. Now so many informations from here and there - I’ve been feeding freezes dried raw. However I have heard that Cavaliers need carbohydrates for their heart. I may try the kibbles you showed us for my Cavalier boy Coco.

      I find that the form the food comes in (kibble, raw, freeze dried, fresh, canned) doesn't matter nearly as much as the ingredients. I use kibble because it's the most practical with multiple dogs. But the kibble I use has a very good ingredients list.

    A Question: We were wondering how you would go about assessing a Cavs suitability for learning new tricks or new positive behaviours? For example; if you used Apple as a subject - how long would it take for her to learn a trick like her mum Bootsie? Or to shake hands before meals, etc.? Is this a sign of intelligence - or simply fast reflection of what she sees you do? Who do you think was your 'smartest' pup?

    I once saw a claim by a breeder that black and tans have (in general) fewer health problems than Blenheims. I thought that was interesting, but she didn't back it up with anything other than her experience.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't know of any research that would back up this claim, but it's interesting that our black and tan girl Bexley, who was a very successful show dog about 15 years ago, lived to 15 1/2 years old, and her Ruby son Murphy went to 16 1/2. Other than that, I haven't seen anything to back up the claim.

    Question for you. I don’t recall you answering this before but I don’t always hear everything either because I am hard of hearing. For your dogs with white fur, how do you keep them so clean? Especially around the mouth area and their personal areas. I have a male black and white dog and he has a little stain around his mouth as well as in his personal areas including under his tail. He has about the same length of hair as your cavaliers. Is there a safe bleaching shampoo for them?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I try to enhance the white on my particolors ONLY for the ones that I am showing. My preferred method is to rub a bit of corn starch into the white areas that need brightening. It's a natural treatment, and won't hurt them, even if they lick or try to eat the stuff (which Apple does all the time!). Occasionally I will use a whitening intensifier made for horses, called Quic Silver. I dilute it 5 to 1, and leave it on for 5 minutes. It's kind of tricky to use, and I don't use it near the mouth, so I don't necessarily recommend it for folks who are not experienced show handlers.
      For my dogs who are not being actively shown, I just use Vellus Show Shampoo, and live with their imperfections.

    Great video! I do have a question, maybe for your next ask the breeder session! I noticed that Bootsie has a lot of white for a black and tan, yet you’ve bred her and gotten very nice puppies that you have gone on to show. When you consider who to breed, are you looking more at structure than coloring, especially since they can throw a different color pattern? I hope my question makes sense! Thanks for your videos!

    Hello Charlie; it seems as though I have a question similar to what’s been brought up here a few times. As a fellow cavalier lover/owner since the mid 1990’s, I’ve decided on a companion cavalier for our sweet 2 year old Ruby. The influx of these “chocolate” colored cavaliers being offered and their subsequent exorbitant prices have given us much concern. They are clearly bred for profit, and profit alone. Wise to consider the source. My question would be, with your experience judging/owning/loving cavaliers, could you please set the record straight about this variant? Is it simply a rare genetic abnormality as you mentioned? Or, as I suspect, was there some Springer Spaniel or Brittany sprinkled in somewhere along the way. The chocolates I’ve seen largely deviate from the traditional Cavalier aesthetic towards those former breeds somewhat. I can see how these seemingly eye-catching coats draw attention for their uniqueness; but I’m afraid people are being duped somewhat.
    Cheers from Canada, Eh!
    -Walter

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is a genetic anomoly, but it may also go back to a cross-breeding with another breed. Either way, responsible breeders always breed to the Breed Standard, which specifies what colors Cavaliers may be. Chocolate is not one of them.
      If someone is breeding away from the Standard, I would be very wary about what other incorrect characteristics their puppies have. And since Chocolates can't be shown, it seems likely that these folks are, as you say, breeding just for profit. That's never a good thing.

    You talked about that breeders get different colors I came across a couple breeders claiming the cavaliers have short tails like the cocker spaniel and looked like thicker puppy and more playful it was a mix plus the color grey with black spots it looked like beautiful puppy little female my question is that color hard to come by .plus breeders want for dog to get fixed I don't mind but until puppy is about 1and half because of any serious problems might come if done early what you recommend in your experience to make sure breeder is not just not being greedy for competition some of us don't care of the dog shows just a a beautiful healthy loving dog.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      According to the Breed Standard, Cavaliers should have long flowing tails, and if they are docked (which is VERY rarely done), no more than 1/3 should be cut off.
      The only acceptable colors are Blenheim (tan and white), Tricolor (black and white with tan markings), Ruby (all reddish tan), and Black and Tan (solid black with tan markings). Anything else is either mismarked or NOT a Cavalier.
      Breeders require their puppies to be spayed or neutered only because they don't want them to fall into the hands of puppy millers who will exploit and mistreat the dog. If I place a puppy with a reputable breeder whom I know well and trust, I would not require it. In any case, we don't recommend early spaying/neutering. The evidence points us toward an age of 9-14 months or later.

  • @janhankins911
    @janhankins911 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    With regard to food, reading the label is very important. Our vet told us that peas, chick peas (Garbanzo beans), and lintels are the grains that have been implicated in resulting in dilated cardiomyopathy. So you'll want to avoid foods (or treats) that contains those foods.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are absolutely correct. The jury is still out on this question, but it's possible that the substitution of these legumes in place of grains in grain-free foods might have an association with DCM.
      Years ago, I fed my dogs a raw diet. We were able to get ground raw meat, bones, and vegetables from a local butcher. One of the problems we found with that diet was that our dogs could not keep sufficient weight on them. I wound up adding oatmeal to the raw food, and they went back to a normal weight. That's why I'm happy to use commercial food that contains grains like oats.

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chaskat35 Did you have any issues with pathogens (like Salmonella)? I've always been afraid of a raw diet because of that. Plus, my vet doesn't like raw diets because she sees very sick dogs from eating raw foods. We feed good quality kibble and have never had any problems with feeding it.

      Hello there…thank you for answering my question on the turned out feet!😊 Ever since I asked the question…we have been paying a lot of attention to Charlotte’s feet! I went back and looked at puppy pics and did not see turned out feet…also I notice when she walks they are not turned out….seems it may be due to perhaps our hard wood floors(we have a lot of area rugs…but whole house is hardwood) even though paw hair is trimmed, puppy laziness or habit?…now that I see they aren’t like that when she walks I feel a bit better…You are the best! Charlotte likes to suckle and chew her ears…on her back forcing ears in mouth with paw….even though I clean them after eating…but probably need a snood🤩 Thank you for the resource! We used a good butcher who had lots of experience producing the raw food, so we never had a problem. Our concerns were dogs not gaining weight, storage, preparation, expense, and no apparent benefits for all the problems.

    I was supposed to pick up my Cav puppy from a breeder on LI yesterday, and she wouldn't let me take the puppy to a vet near her to get checked out without paying in full in cash first. She also wouldn't meet at the vet with the puppy, and kept my $500 deposit and won't return it. She is registered with the AKC. Is this normal? Is it reasonable to ask to take a puppy to a vet right away for health clearance? I can understand she wouldn't want to release the dog without some kind of payment, but I wouldn't trust buying a dog without a vet checking her out. How does this normally work?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry you had this experience. Payment practices vary from one breeder to another.
      As far as deposits go, I don't believe in them at all myself. I don't understand the purpose of the deposit (am I going to force you to take a puppy you don't want?), and I have more than enough inquiries that I don't have to worry about finding a good home for a puppy if the buyer backs out.
      As for having the puppy checked out by a vet, we execute a written contract when the puppy is picked up and full payment is made. The contract states that the buyer will take the puppy to their own vet as quickly as possible, and that we will give a full refund for any puppy returned within the first month. That applies whether the vet discovers a problem, or if for any other reason the person does not want to keep the puppy.
      Registration with AKC unfortunately doesn't mean anything when it comes to situations like yours - it is just a registry for the dogs. A good breed club will have an enforceable code of ethics, but even that is written just for the protection of the breed, not for a puppy buyer or for a breeder.
      The best breeders I know either don't take deposits, or will refund the deposit if your situation changes. There are a few good breeders who will not refund a deposit, but it's not really my place to comment on their business practices. My own practice comes from my point of view that breeding dogs is not a business; it's a passion that we follow for the advancement of the breed.

      @@chaskat35 Thank you so much for your response. Your approach sounds much more reasonable. Live and learn, I suppose. I recently met two chocolate Cavalier s can you explain the genetics of the chocolates?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To put it simply, it's a rare genetic variant in one of the genes that controls coat color. For at least the last 50 years, the Cavalier breed clubs around the world have specified only the 4 colors (Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black &Tan) you generally see. Reputable breeders will always breed to the Standard, and the chocolate variant is recessive, so you'll almost never see a chocolate Cavalier produced by a reputable breeder. Breeders who produce them will usually use only the dogs they know to have the recessive gene, so it's a very small gene pool that can perpetuate this color.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It varies from one dog to another. Generally speaking, they reach their full adult skeletal growth at 9 to 14 months of age. But some still have considerable filling out to do, and may not reach full adult weight until 2 years or so.
      A few months ago, before Apple turned 2 years old, she was hovering around 15-16 pounds. However, her structure is a bit bigger than some girls who would look good at that weight, and I started increasing her food. She is currently just over 17 pounds, and I don't think I'd want her any heavier.
