- The Holy Grail of Shmups, Dodonpachi Campaign! Live Discussion and Commentary! In today's video I will be talking about the extremely rare and potentially lost Dodonpachi Campaign and how badly I want to play it. I also have captured a VHS of a superplay of the game and will be providing live commentary on the run and it's differences from arcade. It'll be a fun time so stop by the chat and hang out!

Additional Information / Corrections about DDP Campaign:
-The hyper is automatically activated, there is no button press for it
-The bees are now extremely valuable for scoring, much more like DOJ
-Stage 3 is now the most lucrative scoring stage because of the bees and hyper
-The original competition was 1.5 months long, not three days (Sept 18th to Oct 31 1997)
-Your Laser and Shot are stronger than in arcade
-Hib in the vid was on lowest rank (highest rank is unbeatable according to WTN)
-The stage 4 boss glitch lock is indeed patched (wtn confirmed this)
-I was wrong about the stage 3 enemy being new, it's actually one of those barely used stage 6 enemies ha

from the research i did zbl nai owned the board he loaned it to an arcade in japan in 2004 with a notice saying this is his property it was playable on the arcade floor for a short time thats the last record i can find of the pcb

being able to play the campaign version of dodonpachi once is pretty much on every cave fan's bucket list

At this point, I don't believe we are gonna get any ROM, so the best we could get, is a recreation (Like the excellent romhacks we have for DDP and Ketsui), I mean, the VHS details pretty well how this game works, so we have extensive knowledge in how it works, we just need to add those extra features on a game.

i really want M2 to do a release with options to play with the campaign version and also the saturn mode-exclusive stage. just a definitive version of the game that's not only active but has all of the stuff in one place.

Yeah no kidding, most likely form would probably it showing up in an m2 port! They did this for Ketsui 's rare competition pcb :-)
@@TheElectricUnderground An M2 port would make sense. Even without the source code or roms they are probably the only ones capable of bringing it back to life. I'll just have to make do with Dodonpachi on the Mister.
To get composite through an ossc you can use a retrotink 2x, or simply just use the retrotink on it's own. The retrotink is just a line doubler for composite, s video and component sources. They cost about $100. They are great for retro gaming but of course can be used for VHS sources also.

How do you even worry about chains, when I mostly worry about staying alive, it's that difficult past stage 3!
Yeah ha very true, chains are brutal been battling them while working towards my 400m in arcade
this is exactly like me before in shmup community when the first time watching super player commentary STG games like they're more worried about scoring while me worrying that how can i survive that pattern XD. and i can agree now and took my attention on scoring since scoring in most shmup games are rewarding extend 1up that very useful for surviving the most games. im usually play scoring in the earlier stage like stage 1 to stage 2 and then afterwards im commit to play survive cause it feels harder for maintain scoring and survive at the same time

Mark, random question: What capture device would you recommend for recording ps4?
I use the elgato HD 60, it s pretty good and affordable, but there are probably better cards out there
any french vcr does RGB through scart, but only 2nd half of that era will support PAL and NTSC (instead of french secam)
yeah and unfortunately I think the vid was recorded via compostie, so I'm not sure if there is much improvement to be had, though I do look forward to getting a tink to direct capture clean

@@TheElectricUnderground what puzzles me about this game is that it was apparently ok to "get" Guwange Blue, but not this or other Cave Matsuri limited stuff like Mushi Red (or am I mixing things up about this one?), but anyways.. (AK Red is just a home version I think, nothing really added to it compared to the arcade version?)
i wonder if someone's made a romhack of ddp with hypers
I don t think there has been one yet, but with the flier info someone could make a romhack that is fairly close to campaign
Hey Mark, if you just need the retrotink to rip this VHS, I can lend you mine. I only use it for composite and S-video, and I don't record those sources too often, so if you wanted to borrow it for a few weeks or something I could ship it to ya

This is hilarious! It's no different than any other Cave shooter. A few days ago I played Crimson Clover in Teknoparrot.... it's 99.99% the same game. Cost = 0 ;-)
Anyway, it's the same as any other Cave shooter and almost all of them can be played for free using emulators. Any game using common joystick/buttons can be run using an emulator and is 100% the same when played in an arcade cab. As they say, a fool and his money are easily parted LOL!
