  • In this video, we travel back to 1886 to feature the story of the final months in the life of a lady by the name of Ellen Maria Allen.
She had spent the past eighteen months residing at one of the common lodging houses situated in White's Row, which was the name of what is now the western end of Durward Street.
In the summer of 1888, she told her other that she had been knocked about by a man - or, as it was put in the parlance of the day "ill-used."
Although she actually survived the attack, she became seriously ill in September 1886, and was admitted to the Whitechapel Workhouse Infirmary. Here she was treated by a nurse and a doctor, to both of whom she reiterated that she had been subjected to violence by a man who was unknown to her.
She would never leave the infirmary, as she died from the effects of her heavy drinking.
At the inquest into her death, the doctor stated that her injuries could have been consistent with her having been attacked. He, however, was of the opinion that she had died from a combination of pleurisy and her heavy drinking.
In this video, we tell the story of those final months, and look at the comparisons between her story and those of several women who later claimed to have been attacked by an unknown man,

There is all sorts of reasons these poor ladies were called unfortunates. If there is a heaven, they are looking down appreciating someone special like Richard to tell their story. Thx Rich

Ah Richard,, always fascinating whether or not they were victims of JTR. God bless them either way.

One has to wonder how many others there are that we will never hear about. Whether they died by violence, the result of the unhealthy environment or by the ravages of drinking, I imagine there must be many more that, like Ellen Maria Allen, we have not heard of before. Thank you, Mr. Jones, for bringing another one to our attention, sad as the story remains.

Considering how soft and pleasant your narration is I really wish you didn't put music at the end it always wakes me up...

Very well done. You have to feel for these poor unfortunate souls who had nothing or on one, and their lives cut short by brutal means unnecessarily.

If somebody had told her that, 137 years later, she'd be the subject of a video she'd ask 2 questions.........a) what's a video? and b) why me? But she was.

No need for overly loud music at the end, or are you trying to wake us up on purpose?

I don't think we should say that it's "unlikely" that these or other women were early victims of the Whitechapel Murderer. Given that serial killers are known to escalate their crimes both in terms of violence and frequency, over many years sometimes, who knows how many women he might have attacked before that fateful night in August, 1888?...

I’m so glad I found your channel I’ve always been interested in Jack the Ripper I got a few book about him. But I believe he was someone from the royal family that’s why he was never caught. Thankyou for your videos ❤😊

I know the royal connection is interesting, but I think it's important to remember that in the age before streetlights, Whitechapel would have been a maze of confusing, pitch-black streets, alleys, dead ends, etc. The killer obviously knew the area very well, and was able to get away quickly and quietly, probably covered in blood. To me he had to have been a local, someone who wouldn't stand out and who may have had a shop or some other building that he could duck into to clean up, dispose of evidence, etc...

How do we know if they where all seperate murders maybe one or two connected to one person but who says there was even a Jack alot of his story was falsely made up by the papers anyway as we know so what if he simply never existed and was just some of the result of over crowding etc and the crime that comes with it.
