My great grandmother was born in whitechapel at the time and was substantially shorter than 5' tall. No doubt due to the terrible malnutrition and poverty that was prominent in poor areas of London at the time. It was interesting to read that Elizabeth Stride was known as 'Long Liz' because of her exceptional height for the Whitechapel area. She was only 5'2" - 5'5" tall. I think we tend to forget just how brutal life was then. Average life expectancy in the UK as a whole was 45, no doubt substantially less in Whitechapel.
For myself this era is just out of reach but you saw echoes of it at times. I knew WW1 vets as a child and their parents were old enough to remember these times. Was using a research library in the old east end in the early 90s, instead of sitting staring at a wall eating my lunch I walked around many of the Ripper sites, glad I did, no one wanted the old east end still then (infact no one wanted most of London then) so you still got the echos and atmosphere from those times in the ramshackle houses and falling down warehouses covered in old soot and traffic pollution. If I'd known how much of it would change I'd have taken a camera.
I knew WW1 vets as a young man. I worked in an old folks home. Those old men were funny and full of cheery stories. Better clothed and fed, in war, than they had ever been.
London has changed immeasurably since the 1970's when I was a teenager and wandered about London..{We lived for a time in a squat in Swaton Rd, and walking home from Central London at 2am took us through Whitechapel..
I've seen many pictures of places like Old Montague Street from the 1960's and 1970's and the buildings and houses look very much as they would have looked in late Victorian times. Bucks Row, Hanbury Street, George Yard and other locations were still standing into the early to mid 1970's and even today, even though the actual murder sites no longer exist, many many streets and buildings do still stand.
This is so rewarding! Expanding the lives of all that lived (and sadly died) in 1888. Superbly narrated & edited, the learned comments issued by other viewers also add to my knowledge and doubtless many others - thank you & VBW x
I just realized that my paternal grandmother was alive in England at this time. She and my father immigrated to the USA in 1912. She was born in 1876. Don't seem so far in the past anymore.
It's a cruel twist of ironic fate that Eddowes brushed off the notion that she'd become a victim of Jack only to meet her end at his hands mere hours later.
I don't know if you both recall but one of Steven Wrights victims appeared on TV being interviewed and spoke about the murders, only to be killed herself. 😟 Sorry for the change of story but it's something if I recall has happened in other cases too et cetera.
@@paulanthony5274 similar story with The Golden State Killer. At a town meeting to discuss the rapes/murders and how to be safe(r), a guy got up and basically challenged the GSK. Guess who got killed a few months later? Turned out that the killer had been at that town hall meeting
OTOH, the claim that the police were photographing the eyes might have been a ruse to spook the Ripper by assuming he believed such a thing to be possible
Interesting, though I'd wonder about the outcome expected by doing so. Like assuming that he'd believe that, which is plausible, what would they hope to achieve? Spook him and he'd turn himself in? Stop killing? Neither seem to be something that could possibly happen. Though it's not like police, especially back then couldn't do something that would not result in a thought out outcome. Or that they wouldn't do something without having a plan of what it would achieve. And little was known of serial killers at the time and their mentality either.
@@constancemiller3753another video mentions that many of the records were lost in the bombings during WW2. I’d believe that has more to do with lost Ripper files than anything else.
It reminds me of the Black mirror episode S04E03 tortured Crocodile, where they are able to read the brains of people to see what they know about a crime. Personally I really enjoyed that episode, some people don't however. Spoiler Alert!! In the final bit of the episode they use the machine to read the mind of a guinea pig to solve all the murders.
I thought I knew everything about. the case, but clearly I didn't. This was very interesting and informative. Im glad I got to see it. Thanks for posting this
Another fascinating video! Those old photos are so evocative, aren’t they? I’m just catching up on your videos having recently subscribed. Thank you! Sheila.
The change of name details make it interesting to suppose that Jack may even have been someone who was in the rooms when that woman ,Mary Kelly, was talking about telling what she saw. I find that very interesting.
Fascinating! It shows the richness of facts behind historical events. Can we also take a moment to appreciate the late, great Dr. Barnardo, whose legacy is still helping those in need to this day...
@@JackTheRipperTours That's an excellent idea. I think he's one of those people, that everyone's heard of, but few know much about (including myself, admittedly).
I have been interested in this era for years now and have countless books on The Whitechapel Murders, but some of these facts are brand new to me. Thanks so much for the effort you put into this.
Andrew Corlett I would find it highly unusual (improbable) to have two serial killers on the loose prepared to mutilate woman within a mile radius at the same time?
Perhaps, but there again if (if) she knew then going to Mitre Square was an act of confidence that she thought she wouldnt be killed. But who knows? The known facts however suggest the person she was killed by was unknown to her. The killer on the other had had a really good knowledge of Mitre square and its surroundings otherwise he would not have been able to do what he did in less than 15 mins and escape without being seen. The killer clearly picked his spot well and had probably reconiotered it along with his path of escape. A degree of planning can be discerned from all the other killings particularly that if Annie Chapman and Mary Jane Kelly. The odd one out appears to Liz Stride, because for someone who killed twice before in a calculating manner one would have expected the same degree of planning on Berner St. That said the best laid plans are always subject to uncertainty and perhaps on that occasion he was "unlucky". He still managed to escape unnoticed from the scene however so one part of his plan worked.
I don't believe the killer put any planning into where and when he struck he killed when he couldn't resist the urge and an opportunity presented itself. He ran incredible risks of being spotted and did no more than cursorily looking around for potential eyewitnesses the luck was with him unfortunately
The Buck's Row name change struck a cord with me. The movie Changling focused on a gruesome pedophile murderer in Wineville, California in the 1920s. The end of the film reveals the town changed its name to Mira Loma to shield itself from association with the crimes. As we watched the film my sister and I were trying to figure out where that had occurred due to the name change throwing off our 'local's knowledge' of a landscape intentionally camouflaged. Wild.
Rillington Place also had it's name changed after the murders. It became Ruston Close. The modern street of Bartle Road runs roughly where Rillington Place once stood.
Catherine Eddowes ..if she was to be arrested in the other district ..which the two London districts had different ideals of drunks ...one, would keep drunks till early morning, Eddowes found her self in district that they let drunks go at 1 o clock in morning ..unfortunate fate!
The strangest murder of the bunch was the "Kelly Case". This revolves around the singular testimony of Ms. Maxwell but includes several other aspects as well. Kelly had split up from her "mate" Joseph Barnett because he disapproved of her prostitution lifestyle, BUT he was still visiting her and giving her money. She was letting a female friend stay with her, whose name I forget, and they were sleeping together in the same double bed she had shared with Barnett, which also upset him. This friend had brought over a load of laundry to be washed several nights before the murder, which happened to be the last time Barnett had come to visit and they had an argument so he naively admitted at the inquest. When he was with her he also claimed at the inquest they would oddly spend their time together with him reading her ongoing newspaper accounts of the "Ripper" murders, in which he claimed she had a great interest. She had supposedly lost her apartment key and either had to use his when he was with her (he supposedly took it with him when he left her!) or use the landlord's master key. Supposedly she also broke a window pane to stick her arm through and unlatch the doorlock from the inside. BUT, the exterior photograph of the apartment shows no clearly discernable hole in any window pane, rather than areas of glass streaked clear of grimy dust to look through; and the door was NOT positioned close enough to reach through the corner window! A rare interior photograph made from the inner side of the bed next to the wall shows NO doorlatch on the door, which a KEY would NOT have worked for anyway since a doorlatch lock can only be unlocked by a person ALREADY WITHIN and has NO MEANS of exterior access!! So WHAT'S going on, because on the day the body was discovered police claimed they COULD NOT get in since even the landlord had NO key and they had to wait SEVERAL HOURS for an axe with which to break down the door!! Yet again, the photographs made that day show the door INTACT!! So the following questions arise: was the load of clothes found burned in the fireplace the laundry her friend had left several nights before and if so, WHY hadn't she taken it with her since she was only staying there occasionally? Was the murdered female found in the bed really Mary Kelly OR was it her friend? If so, then WHY did Barnett LIE and identify it as Kelly, claiming he could identify her "by the eyes"?! Why didn't the landlord have a master key to get in if necessary? Would Kelly REALLY have slept in an UNsecurable dwelling at night in such a dangerous neighborhood?!Did Joseph Barnett do it? If not, then WHY at the inquest did he bother to emphasize that of all men Kelly liked him "best", DESPITE their "FREQUENT" fights?? IF the corpse was Kelly, then of course WHY did Ms. Maxwell claim to have talked with her THAT morning, only an hour or so before the corpse was found? IF Mary Kelly was STILL ALIVE that morning, WHY didn't she return to her apartment to find the corpse? And IF she did, WHY didn't she report it to the landlord? If it was her dead friend, was she afraid that SHE HERSELF would be accused of the murder, OR was she afraid someone might be out to get her and mistook her friend for her so she wanted people to think she was dead and left town? Was she afraid Barnett did it after arguing with her friend and that maybe HE was the "Ripper"?? WHY was the attack so vicious? WAS the mutilation done by the murderer, OR by the "autopsy doctor" Dr. Philipps?? This is a VALID question, because the well - publicized photograph of the corpse from the outer side of the bed shows the left leg lying flat on the bed with the thigh intact and the right leg near the wall raised with the flesh of the inner side of the thigh flayed to the bone. BUT the less- publicized scene taken from next to the wall shows the right leg LOWERED out of view in the foreground, with the LEFT LEG RAISED and the inner side of THAT thigh flayed to the bone!! It can't be two different ways in both photographs made the same day, UNLESS, the mutilations were made THAT morning by THE "DOCTOR" and the other leg mutilation and repositioning were done after that scene was photographed (thus the EXCUSE of the pseudo-delay entry). The obvious question about that scenario is..... WHY?
I guess for these poor women they needed the 6 pence for rent. The one good thing to come out of this is the plight of the poor etc. Dennis Neilson was right though why do we care more about the dead then the living?
Great video!!! I wonder: if it was a common use to photoshot the victim's eyes in order to find the least things they saw.... what's abaout the end of the face photoshot of Mary Kelly? Too much gruesome to see it?
It is interesting that Catherine Eddowes knew Mary Jane Kelly because she used to live in one of the front rooms that you see at 16:57. Maybe that's why she told the police her name was Mary Anne Kelly.
Personally, I think Mary Jane Kelly was killed by a different person than the others, because the modus operandi of her murder was completely different than all the others. All the others were killed on the street, she was killed in her home, which shows lot more premeditation in choosing her specifically as the target, whereas all the others could have easily been just randomly picked victims that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, the amount of damage done on her body was also completely in different league to any of the others, and finally, Jack never sent any messages to the press boasting about it.
@@Klaital1, just my speculation, but I think the only reason he chose to start killing indoors was because he’d had too many close calls with authorities and random witnesses walking in to the alleys when he wasn’t finished with his work. Of the five so-called canonical murders, he appears to have been nearly interrupted in at least two and possibly three if you believe one theory that says he pretended to find one of the bodies.
@@Klaital1 I have often wondered that myself. When I learned that Mary Jane claimed to have been t trafficked to France, but escaped, I began wondering about contracts. She wasn't your average trafficking victim. She had been on the game for ages, in much swankier places than she ended up, and appeared to know those who sent her to France. Or at least have an inkling about what was going on. If we are to believe the France thing, is it possible she went expecting more than she got, and when things were not as she expected she took her leave and the gang did not like that? Or have I just watched to many Gang series? I think that is why the ripper fascinates us, because every time you think you have found a clue, it turns out to be just another strand in the web. And of course we will never solve it.
The crime scene photo of Mary Jane Kelly is gruesome enough, I'm kinda glad her eyes weren't shot in detail or that the picture never came to public. Her "eyes" or more like the part of the face where the eyes used to be look like two holes anyway...
Great video as always, Richard! I think it is really strange that Catherine Eddowes a) allegedly claimed that she knew the killer and b) chose the names "Jane Kelly" and "Mary Ann Kelly". Which strange fact puzzles you the most?
Thank you Philipp. There are so many strange facts to choose from. One of the ones that really puzzles me is Mary Malcolm and her motivation for claiming Liz Stride was her sister.
@@SleepOrFocusASMR Mary, Ann and Jane were among the most popular, if not _the_ most popular, womens' names at the time. Similarly, there were plenty of Irish in the East End, Kelly is a common Irish surname, and Eddowes was in a relationship with John Kelly. Bearing those things in mind, I don't find it particularly odd that she used those aliases.
@@ftumschk it seems like Mary Kelly was well known around Dorset Street being she was one of the younger and prettier of the working ladies. I find it more likely Catherine's Eddowes knew of Mary Jane Kelly and used her likeness for an alias over the odds of her blindley using the name Mary/Jane/Anne/Kelly living on Dorset street.
I see a lot of comments about the eyes retaining the picture of the murderer. This was a common belief, as far back, at least, as medieval times. Obviously with no reference to photography, but certainly a murder victim’s eyes would be checked for an image. Another very common belief was that if the murderer was to touch the body of their victim, the wounds would start to bleed.
That’s not entirely true.. There are examples of serial killers who stopped killing, for various reasons.. Mostly because his exterior life had changed, often settling down with a woman and family.. I don’t think a deranged killer like Jack stopped, but not all serial killers are deranged..
As @Jacob Jones points out, that is not entirely true. While they may (temporarily or permanently) lose the physical ability to kill through age, accidents, disease, confinement, death etc. They may also "lose" the ability to kill in the same location through volontary or involontary movement geographically, change of work, transfers etc, - (Golden state killer). And they may lose the psychological "ability" to kill via marriage, having children etc - (BTK). Serial killing in order to disguise the motive for killing the actual intended victim is often used as a plot device, but extremely rare IRL as far as I know - please educate me if I'm wrong.
I wonder how Catherine Eddows found out that information? Did she seem him in the act or did jack get drunk and randomly tell her? She clearly knew him enough to have a name. It is also not a coincidence that she was going to turn in the name of Jack the Ripper and then ended up dead the same day by that very same killer. The question is who knew about what she was trying to do? That would almost certainly be a short list of people and lead directly to the culprit.
I reckon she was only joking, or the lodging-house deputy who told the story to the press made it up. It's just the kind of "fancy that!" detail that some people like to add to their stories to make them sound more important or interesting. Besides, there was little prospect of a reward until after Eddowes was killed, so the idea that Kate said she'd come back to London to claim "the" reward doesn't seem likely. A substantial reward fund totalling £1,200 was publicised in the Pall Mall Gazette on 2nd Oct - two days too late for Eddowes - so it's interesting to note that the lodging-house deputy's "I've come to claim the reward" story only appeared in the second week of that month.

another fact is you have a very nice voice, good for this kind of thing, so much more pleasant than a shrill kid's or someone who shouldn't lend their voice at all....
What a great man Dr. Bernado looks and sounds to be. A very decent human being, with a big heart. RIP all of those affected by these atrocities, and to you Dr. Bernardo, RIP 🙏 ❤
The narrator says that Catherine Eddows may have put herself in danger..... I think its obvious that she did that without a doubt. She ended up getting cut all to hell.
I mean, obvious statement of the obvious is obviously obvious. Any streetwalking prostitute was vulnerable. Any woman out alone late at night is vulnerable. These are the two most vulnerable categories of people, under the circumstances which statistically increase their chance of victimisation. That applies as much then as it does now.
I would imagine the Mary Kelly crime scene in Miller’s Court was the most shocking ever seen by those who saw it. It must have affected people for years. The mutilation seemed horrifyingly thoughtful and meticulous, not the actions of some crazed lunatic hacking away uncontrollably. Even the horrors inflicted on the other poor victims suggests to me someone who is in complete control of their actions and is familiar with anatomy. Could this fit Tumblety?
Well Tumblety did have a large collection of female uterus's in his home, bit of a strange coincidence. But witness descriptions lean more towards Kosminski. If I had to take a bet it was Kosminski, DNA evidence or not
Thoughtful and meticulous ???? How do you get that ? There was blood and gore spread all over the room. Every organ was removed and spread about. Seems like the definition of crazed hacking to me.
A witness called Hutchinson knew Mary Kelly and saw her take a man into her room and waiting for nearly an hour but then gave up. That was the last time anyone saw her. It's possible that this man was Jack and despite the fact that it would have taken 15-20 minutes to inflict the injuries...it's likely he took his time, rather than hack away with speed.
No. People weren't so dumb then as many like to believe now. Everyone knew where babies came from, for example. That alone would have been enough knowledge for JTR to do what he did to the victims prior to Kelly. He was simply attacking the female reproductive organs. Anyone who'd seen a pregnant woman would have the knowledge they needed to carry out that kind of attack. Simply cut in & rip out whatever you find in there. That's not the work of a surgeon or doctor. Many people worked in butchery or slaughter houses back then too. That would also have given them sufficient anatomical knowledge to do what JTR did, more than sufficient in fact. As we know so little about Kosminski it's entirely possible he could have worked casually in slaughterhouses. There were several slaughterhouses in & around Whitechapel & countless butchers in the area. The fact that his occupation is frequently cited as a "barber and hairdresser" is also in a sense misleading. "Barbers" in the Victorian era didn't just cut hair. They carried out all manner of minor surgical procedures too, which would have required a rudimentary anatomical knowledge. Kosminski was most in modern terms most likely an "incel". Local women were known to have mocked him & wanted little to do with him. He attacked his own sister with a knife. His asylum records state he "had a hatred of women". In my opinion he had the means, motive & opportunity, plus he lived right in the middle of the area where the killings took place. It's not case closed exactly, but logical deduction points the finger at him more than anyone else. Tumblety was just another oddball. Yes he had a collection of uteruses, which is strange, but they were surgically removed from corpses, not cut from living victims then chucked into the gutter. There were a lot of weirdos around Whitechapel in 1888. Tumbelty was just one of many. Walter Sickert, the artist was another. It may have been him that sent at least one of the Ripper Letters. Sickert may have even known who the Ripper was, perhaps even been an accomplice, as many of his paintings seem to give clues which indicate that he had information about the murders that would not become public knowledge until years later. However it wasn't him, or Tumblety. Another thing that rules Tumblety out is the description of the man seen with one of the victims before she was killed. Mid 20's, scruffy, fair or strawberry blonde hair, short light moustache (which describes Kosminski) Tumblety was older, fatter, well dressed & had a huge moustache. It was almost certainly Kosminski. I know that's a bit dull & simplistic, but that's almost always the way in reality. The men who commit these kinds of crimes are sad, grubby little losers.
@@runlarryrun77 actually i don't think that the asylum records of Kosminsky are mentioning his hatred of women. Rather that part was mentioned in one of the detectives memorandum. He was paranoid schizophrenic and still it was possible that he was JTR but he wasn't really violent . Thats why Martin Fido proposed David Cohen as more fitting subject for the JTR identity. However if we look at the stories of similar murderers as JTR: Robert Napper, Richard Chase or Ed Gein we won't find much about violence in the prison or asylum environment. In Chase case there it was observed that he was catching and consuming small animals blood - but nothing about agression towards people. We could think that Chase was even more disturbed than JTR and therefore i would suggest that its possible that caught Ripper wasn't necessarly violent in confinment. In any case David Cohen, Martin Fidos finding, was very much crazy and destructive.
Well I don’t know how accurate the postmortem science was back then. I think she was killed in the morning. I don’t think Jack planned that much he was just an opportunistic killer.
That has always intruiged me. Apparently they did find clothes burned, or partially burnt in the fireplace. My theory is that Jack was covered in blood, burned his clothes, and dressed in Mary Kelly's clothes escaped. These women did not have lavish wardrobes, at a distance clothes would be more easily identified, for example a recognisable hat. Up close would be another matter, though not impossible.
You know something I find strange about the Ripper is the Gholston street writing is the fact that ,Despite the fact that the city of London police and the metro police were told to write down the message on the wall they both saw something different. That seems like a common theme.
Where is the source about the claim that Catherine said ‘she may know who the Ripper is’? Seamen from ‘kosminsky’ was found on a shawl that Catherine wore the night of her murder. This video is quiet good, the way points link up is just eerie
@@JackTheRipperTours ok, was interesting as it was the first time I have seen that about Catherine. I’m very drawn to her for some reason which seemed to happen after I had done the walk in London while there.
Years ago, I read Patricia Cornwell's book about Walter Sickert, and her claim was he was Jack the Ripper. She made a pretty good case, and I thought she was very thorough. I saw other things about this case, and some say that it wasn't Sickert and she was wrong. I just remember thinking she made a good case, although it would be unlikely to prove it was definitely Sickert.
Yes we should respect the people who are trying to shed light on his identity even though the theories are not necessarily provable it shows that people care enough to try to unmask him.
Thought the same also but this theory is largely ridiculed his paintings were disturbing the woman drapped across the bed plus"inside the bedroom of Jack the Ripper"which was actually Sickerts bedroom,i know she spent millions of her own money on the investigation(I've seen countless theories which i suppose push their own theory but the Sickert theory makes sense as much as any of them just to be brushed off as ridiculous(my brother is an artist+schizophrenic artists are a different breed)
Thank you so much for this. It has given me many interesting thoughts and even more theories now! ... PS.... loving the book, i haven't put it down yet
Fascinating information. Was caused Berner Street to be changed to Henrique’s Street ? Was this for the same reason Buck’s Row was changed to Durward Street?
Berner st. was changed about 1960 upon the death of East London politician and activist Basil Henriques . In my lifetime i remember it as Berner Street .
It’s crazy to think that people of that time actually thought that someone’s retina could actually hold the image of that persons killer.. Absolutely crazy.
I dont think its that strange when you think of how cameras were invented and how they got the idear. Wasn't it a small hole in a shead that produced the upside down image of tree.
Well, I mean for the time it’s not very surprising considering what they didn’t know yet. But I definitely can see why they’d think it might be possible. You often get flashes of light or images “burned” into your eyes until you blink them away and it stops being there, so if you were alive in 1888 you might think the same thing. They had the right body part to be honest, the retina is why that happens, it just doesn’t keep an image there.
My grandfather who lived near Whitechapel told me years ago that the murders were at the time 'nothing unusual' for the time and that the police Officers or Constables who investigated had absolutely no idea of the 'supposed' murderers even though these crimes occurred somewhat regularly (but not within the alleged time period) and residents were not surprised. As a twelve year old he had seen and had heard of such acts - young boys of the time were well aware of what was going on around them. There was no scare of the so called (white chapel murders) as these were commonplace in the area of the time. At the time he said there was no indication of who committed such acts, or of the other murders that occurred around the area around that time And said to me that all creeds were treated equally. Told to me in 1988 just before he died. I have no belief that he was telling the truth before he died. Is 'Jack" a fiction, I believe so.
Wow so 1888 to 1988 at 112 and still mentally stable and able to recall thoughts from 100 years earlier when at 50ish I have trouble like most remembering where my car keys are from last night
Now there's some true horror, the idea that Mary Kelly's ghost thought her murder was a hallucination bought on by the DT's... I prefer to think it was mistaken identity, or some stuff up in the time lines. RIP all these unlucky ladies.
I have seen it suggested that the victim was not Mary Kelly at all, but the woman who allegedly stayed there the night before. It is an idea expanded upon in the film 'From Hell' It seems odd that she just disappears if that is the case., but in 'The Five' the author touched on some very weird stuff about sex trafficking, and Mary Jane claiming to have escaped her traffickers. You could make up all manner of hypotheses on that. Throw in the Catherine Eddowes link and you could make a bestseller! It is odd that the same names, or variants keep occurring. Mary Ann, Annie Chapman, Mary Jane, Catherine using bot Mary Anne and Jane and Kelly as aliases. As someone has said here, it may be that they knew ,or knew of each other, the names were in circulation due to the murders and they were common names, but it has always struck me as a bit strange. As though there Is some hidden link that has been overlooked. Certainly, few of the players in this weird game (even witnesses) seem to be who they said they were, or claimed to be. That may not have been unusual in the environment they were living in, but to me it is most peculiar. Mary Jane for example. Was she Welsh? Irish? At one point she was even calling herself Marie Jeanette and claiming links to France! You end up thinking that these people changed their names and 'backgrounds' far more often than they changed their clothes!
The murderer was, of course, the morgue attendant. Robert Mann. The photograph business is not proven and has been confused subsequently with the case of a shop burglary. The burglars closed the eyes of the murdered shop keepers as they believed the eyes held images of the last people they saw. As the burglars had closed the eyes, the police photographer took a snap of the eyes of the dead in the hope of getting fingerprints. Which they did. The same on the cash box/till.
Did Kate Eddowes know who JTR was? She may have been aware of Edward McKenna. McKenna was a Whitechapel resident who also went hop picking. On his return he was picked up by Police for threatening behaviour with a knife. The simple minded McKenna may have been an easy suspect for locals, and for those hop picking in Kent.
Sad to think that some of the victims previously had a good education, family etc and ended up for various reasons with alcohol problems and prostitution.
I seem to remember that the insulting "Jack the Ripper" mini series with Michael Caine and Lewis Collins (Two Great actors, terrible series) had a scene in the aftermath of Mary Kelly's murder, Sir Charle Warren, played by Hugh Fraser exits the house and says to another officer as a photographer enters the house "They say the eyes of a dead person captures the last thing they see!" What I didn't know was that this was an actual theory at the time!! Edit, I had actually paused at the 2nd part of this video on the heading of "Photographing the victims eyes!" And wrote my comment. Oops! Sorry!!😬😬😬😬
Interesting. When you said the policeman was called Jewes/Dues, it made me think of the writing on the wall 'The Jewes are the men who will not be blamed for nothing.' Has anyone ever thought about that? How was his name spelt? Could there be a connection? In addition, what came out of the victim's report to the other officer that she knew the identity of Jack the Ripper? Finally, it is really interesting that Eddowes gave an alias of a future victim (Kelly) to the pawnbroker and the police. It means that she obviously knew Mary Jane Kelly. But also, both Eddowes and Kelly were murdered. Could someone have used the name information to hunt for either woman? I'm not suggesting that the police were involved, but those things just caught my attention, especially since any hint seems useful at this point.
I've long had the theory that Mary Kelly is the key to the whole mystery. Considering the false name given by Catherine Eddowes, a Dorset street link, John Kelly having the same surname as Mary, Mary or Ann being linked to several victims and the discrepancies with Mary Kellys murder, im thinking the murderer may have been looking for her and the others killed in cases of mistaken identity. I also have never believed in Liz Stride being his victim.
Hmm, now ive not heard that story about Catherine Eddowes. Now that is intriguing, she leaves for Kent in September after Mary Ann Nichols murder, maybe Annie Chapman's too. She claims to know the killer and gets murdered not long after returning? Now that sounds like she knew the ripper and was possibly being pursued by the ripper. Later Mary kelly, the name she gave, gets killed too? Theres possibly something in that
This is a very valid point. If the ripper was a woman, then she could easily move around completely unharassed to either get away, or pick a victim.. however, there were witnesses for some of the victims minutes before their end. The instance of the early morning find. Man walking to work, sees another man bending over a woman, who then yells at him to get the police.. The guy gets up and runs for the police.. find one, tells him about the woman, and the cop runs on alone, while the man runs off in another direction. Minutes later the policeman arrives.. only the woman is now in a huge pool of blood. It was the ripper who had been bending over her..disturbed in his act.. the blood hadn't had enough time to soak through the woman's clothes.
Even today the hierarchy of the police, as with many other organisations is filled to the brim with Freemasons (as is the monarchy). They ALL duly protect their own...
45 because of child mortality though. If you lived past 20, you'd usually live past 60.
I would have loved to have walked around old East end of London before it was torn down, just to get a feel for those ties.
@@alfreddunn03 . You still can. Have a walk around Wapping, not just the main streets, there’s a wealth of stuff hidden away.

@@alfreddunn03 You still can in some parts , ,🎩🔪.
@@JimMorrisonLoL you sure about that?
Other than high rise flats, London hadn't changed that much until the 70s. Still the same old houses, run down shops, railway cuttings exist even now.

It's a cruel twist of ironic fate that Eddowes brushed off the notion that she'd become a victim of Jack only to meet her end at his hands mere hours later.
I know. She also told her lover John Kelly that she wasn't afraid of the murderer.

OTOH, the claim that the police were photographing the eyes might have been a ruse to spook the Ripper by assuming he believed such a thing to be possible
Good point, Dirk.
The Ripper file has been decimated by thievery through the years. If those photos were taken the proof is gone.
@@constancemiller3753 this cant be true
Interesting, though I'd wonder about the outcome expected by doing so. Like assuming that he'd believe that, which is plausible, what would they hope to achieve? Spook him and he'd turn himself in? Stop killing? Neither seem to be something that could possibly happen. Though it's not like police, especially back then couldn't do something that would not result in a thought out outcome. Or that they wouldn't do something without having a plan of what it would achieve. And little was known of serial killers at the time and their mentality either.

I don't think Miss Eddowes knew who Jack was. Had she known I'm sure she would never have put herself in a position to be alone with him.

BUT,
the exterior photograph of the apartment shows no clearly discernable hole in any window pane, rather than areas of glass streaked clear of grimy dust to look through; and the door was NOT positioned close enough to reach through the corner window!
WHY?
Yes yes yes I see all you mean.
Excellent questions, all!!!! Unfortunately we'll never get answers to all of them.Very annalitical mind.

It is interesting that Catherine Eddowes knew Mary Jane Kelly because she used to live in one of the front rooms that you see at 16:57. Maybe that's why she told the police her name was Mary Anne Kelly.
Good point, Jodie.

Mary and Jane were both common fake names given by sex workers. Kelly was a common Irish last name, "Mary or Jane Kelly" is like "Mary or Jane Smith.

A serial killer only stops when they die or get caught...or the serial killing is just a diversion to cover the real intended victim.
Thank you, Geoffrey.
Or move 2 another country...
I think that serial killers are practically non-existant. Most are part of larger groups and made to carry the can.
Great video Richard 🙂 Just found your channel and I find it fascinating.

Yes, Chris, it is an intriguing twist.

The narrator says that Catherine Eddows may have put herself in danger..... I think its obvious that she did that without a doubt. She ended up getting cut all to hell.
Good point, Kelly.
Great video very informative..thanks ✌️

Awsome facts! Particulary that of Mary Kelly being seen after her purported death.
Thank you.

The source was a newspaper report, Colin. But, it might not have been true. It was just something that was mentioned.
@@JackTheRipperTours ok, was interesting as it was the first time I have seen that about Catherine. I’m very drawn to her for some reason which seemed to happen after I had done the walk in London while there.
How many sailors can fit on a shawl? Can't be that many😊.
Sickert was too tall also witnesses described Jack as being about 5”7. Sickert was 6” tall.
Thought the same also but this theory is largely ridiculed his paintings were disturbing the woman drapped across the bed plus"inside the bedroom of Jack the Ripper"which was actually Sickerts bedroom,i know she spent millions of her own money on the investigation(I've seen countless theories which i suppose push their own theory but the Sickert theory makes sense as much as any of them just to be brushed off as ridiculous(my brother is an artist+schizophrenic artists are a different breed)
not a shred of evidence. Just somebody trying to sell a book.
Thank you so much for this. It has given me many interesting thoughts and even more theories now! ... PS.... loving the book, i haven't put it down yet
Glad you enjoyed it!
Book? What book?
Fascinating information.
Was caused Berner Street to be changed to Henrique’s Street ? Was this for the same reason Buck’s Row was changed to Durward Street?
Berner st. was changed about 1960 upon the death of East London politician and activist Basil Henriques . In my lifetime i remember it as Berner Street .
A Great Presentation as usual 👋
Another great vid 👌🏻👏👍
Thanks.
Great video, Richard!
Glad you enjoyed it
Subscribed. I enjoyed that
Awesome, thank you, Sue.
if the police was so eager to try anything to catch the Ripper, how could they possibly not pursue Lechmere
It’s crazy to think that people of that time actually thought that someone’s retina could actually hold the image of that persons killer.. Absolutely crazy.
I think it underlines how primitive the science was back then. Easy to forget it's over 130 years ago now. Nearer to 1760 than today.
This is fantastic for me to crochet to, I think I'm going to subscribe. I find this whole case fascinating
That's very interesting.
Wow so 1888 to 1988 at 112 and still mentally stable and able to recall thoughts from 100 years earlier when at 50ish I have trouble like most remembering where my car keys are from last night
@@joaoalmendra65 not sure interesting is the word I would use
@@tomr3422 I’m British and “interesting” is the word I use when I need to politely say I think the person opposite is telling porky pies.
Very interesting story Thankyou 👍❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
May i ask you what font was used on the thumbnail?
I'll check it our and get back to you.
Great video. What’s the name of your background song?
Hi Rik. Pleased you enjoyed it. The opening track is called Devious Little Smile. The closing track is called Angels Among Us.
This is great, thank you!!
You're very welcome!
Don't be so silly. There is no real evidence against anyone and we will never now know who it was.
We all know it was Rowan Atkins durring his Black adder breaks
It was Winnie THE Pooh ....they share the same middle name.
I saw pictures of Mary Kelly. Seems to me like her eyes were removed my the killer, how are they able to photograph her eyes?
They weren’t removed he just stabbed and slashed her face up.
How could Mary Kelly's eyes have been photographed? The crime scene photos clearly show her whole face was taken off.
Apparently her eyes were "open and staring."
It had been some time but I remember that the eyes were still therein the photograph.
@@JackTheRipperTours but the point remains her face was gone and I remember her eyes were gouged out
@@nicholassmith479 just checked the photos and there was no eyes
He removed her eye lids which is why she looked like she was staring.
Love the photo of the old cabs in the yard never seen this before.
Sad to think that some of the victims previously had a good education, family etc and ended up for various reasons with alcohol problems and prostitution.
No 1 is a HELL of a coincidence! Maybe too much of one......
Very enjoyable. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
I seem to remember that the insulting "Jack the Ripper" mini series with Michael Caine and Lewis Collins (Two Great actors, terrible series) had a scene in the aftermath of Mary Kelly's murder, Sir Charle Warren, played by Hugh Fraser exits the house and says to another officer as a photographer enters the house "They say the eyes of a dead person captures the last thing they see!" What I didn't know was that this was an actual theory at the time!!
Edit, I had actually paused at the 2nd part of this video on the heading of "Photographing the victims eyes!" And wrote my comment. Oops! Sorry!!😬😬😬😬
No need to apologise, Shaun, very astute!
Did you know Dr Francis Tumbullty had lodgings on Hanbury Street?
He was also trying to buy specimens of uterii from London hospitals!
I am surprised the residents of Cromwell street did not want the name of that street changed after what happened there with the West's.
I still find it odd that Rowan Adkinson has never explained where he was between Black Adder mid evil and world war. I should write a book
I love these videos, I've been a Ripperologist for many years and plan to write my own book in the next few years
Pleased you like them, Darcy. Good luck with the book. Look forward to reading it.
If Eddowes really knew who the killer was, and wasn't affraid of being killed, it can only point to one person.
Who
Her hop picking partner, Kelly?
Come On sunshine cough up - ? Well at least empty those pockets lad
Tease
Mean the Duke
Great stuff
Thank you Ian.
25:14 are u saying that the police officer who looked like a women got stabbed by jak the ripper and jak escaped
Hi Tamer. No, I'm saying the suspect he had under surveillance escaped in the confusion when the police officer was stabbed.
@@JackTheRipperTours oh ok
That confusion wqs verz suspicious and who organized it.
Nobody ever mentions his dog....Jack the Russell!
You might be barking up the wrong tree, Tony!
@@JackTheRipperTours funny mate
Interesting fact. Jack the Ripper and Robert the Bruce had the same middle name!
I just saw Jack the Russell!😎
That's because he's barking mad!
Theres possibly something in that
Lady says she’s sick after drinking for days. Other lady, “Go down to the pub and get yourself half a pint.”
It's known as 'the hair of the dog', and is often recommended.
Charles Lechmere the ripper
If Eddows knew the Ripper she seemed comfortable. How come she wasn't scared? Maybe because she wasn't afraid of a woman?
Merci beaucoup, très intéressant

Was a police officer ever been considered a suspect?
The names of several police officers have been put forward.
Yes. Sergeant Thicke i believe.
Even today the hierarchy of the police, as with many other organisations is filled to the brim with Freemasons (as is the monarchy). They ALL duly protect their own...
Well done
I wonder if photos of the victims eyes were taken and do they still exist? Possibly in police files that are unopened?
Yes the do
They would be very creepy to look at.
