  • The inquest into Mary Kelly's death opened at Shoreditch Town Hall on the morning of Monday the 12th of November, 1888.
One the jury had bee sworn in, they were taken to the nearby mortuary, where they viewed the body of the victim.
From here they were ushered along Commercial Street and into Dorset Street.
Here, they squeezed through the narrow entrance into Miller's Court and were taken into number 13, the room in which Jack the Ripper had murdered his latest victim.
Accompanying the jurors was a special reporter from The Pall Mall Gazette, and that night his report on what he had observed was published.
It gives us a first hand account of what happened that day, and of the scene in the streets as those who lived in the district reacted to the horror that had occurred in their midst.
In this video, you will be able to follow the report as it appeared in the Gazette, as you see the locations mentioned, as they are today and as they were at the time.

I find the statement "...it was by no means a horrible sight." quite perplexing. I've seen plenty of messed up stuff on gore sites and still, the face of Mary Kelly is somehow the most haunting of all even if only glimpsed through a 136 year old photograph. Maybe, because you can still tell she was beautiful, and it is really sad...

I avoid looking at it. I had an idea that the horror of the crime scene was a way to prevent people looking into it. It was to do as much damage to the people looking at it almost as the victim. Vengeful for being mocked by the media.

One thing that I struggle with about this subject, is that I don't look into the injuries in too much detail, because I find them distressing. Yes I guess that I am a crap Ripperologist. The pictures of Mary Kelly are a thing of nightmares, even viewed 140 years later, in black and white.

I can totally understand that - I have seen the picture of what was left of her and words can't even begin to describe it - how one human being could perpetrate such an outright atrocity upon another simply beggars belief. Regardless of how she chose to live her life, she didn't deserve to meet her maker in such horrific fashion. It's a very long time since I saw the photograph, but it is still etched indelibly in my mind - once such a thing is witnessed, it's extremely difficult to forget - I'd defy anyone not to be utterly shocked and stunned at the sheer butchery visited upon this poor girl.

What is most disturbing is this. Sir Robert Anderson, Donald Swanson and Inspector Abberline all stated (on record) that they knew what happened and the case was solved.Few people studying the case ask the obvious question. WHY DID THEY NOT DISCLOSE THE ANSWER? This is a giant red flag being ignored. It means if they chose to be silent, then the answer has some gravity attached to it. Abberline refused to disclose, but did throw a bone stating " the solution DOES lie at the top".
I am 99% sure the state is envoled in this and ultimately it is to do with treason. And when you consider Kelly's injuries were similar to the treasonist Guy Fawkes, it is a fair bet.

there’s probably no one would be alive today to confirm it being it’s a 126 year old cold case that will never to be solved , even though she was meant to have had a wee daughter back in Ireland thats still 5 generation that has gone by . all i can write to end this is R.I.P Girls but how the hell can they after being mutilated like they was

Tourist Boards would promote it as a fine example of period housing, as is the case for Fournier and Fashion Streets. From what I understand, serial murderers escalate with each murder. After what he did to that poor woman, he must have either been jailed for something else, in an asylum, or died. I don't recall hearing about any other murders as bad or worse than hers...if there had been, they would have immediately been connected to the Ripper.

I highly recommend the book 'The Five...victims of Jack the Ripper'. It tells you the background life of each victim and they should be remembered as people instead of a brutal post mortem image taken after death. Sadly in most horrific murder cases the perpetrator is more discussed and remembered in comparison to the victims! Sadly these women lived at the edges of Victorian society in poverty surviving day to day for their next meal or a bed to sleep in...but each had their own story and how they ended up an easy target for a serial killer.

Yes, The Five is extremely flawed, with the author Hallie Rubenhold casually dismissing huge portions of the evidence available in the Ripper case (the remaining Police reports and most of what was written in newspapers). She is very selective in what she uses to push her (imo) ludicrous assertion that, as per last commenter, the victims were killed while asleep and that there is NO evidence that most of them ever solicited (😂). She misrepresents quotes, and selectively edits one quote in particular in an appallingly egregious manner, in order to twist it into supporting her view.

In the museum were two preserved victims of Jack the Ripper, although I forget which two they were. One of my duties was to photograph them for use in books and other publications. Whether the museum still retains the bodies is unknown to me.
Even after the passage of just about 80 years the bodies were in ‘reasonable’ condition and during my career as a forensic photographer I was to see much worse. I presume that my photos, and the original scene of crime photos must be archived somewhere.

Hi Peter, I was born in Mile End Hospital Bow, so I’ve long had a fascination with Jack the Ripper, although I moved from the East End many years ago.
When I started to read about the dreadful murders in the late 1980s’ I realised that they’d only occurred 100 years’ ago, and yet it was like another world, where poverty and crime were inexorably linked.
And the lives of the victims were horrific before they were killed, having to resort to selling themselves, which is all they had.
No doubt Marie Kelly thought that her little room provided her with a semblance of safety, but it was precious little defence against someone with the bloodlust of the Ripper.
In answer to your question, I’m pretty sure that both Catherine Edowes, and Polly Nichols were buried, and I pray that they are both resting in peace.
I’m sure they would be amazed to think that we are still debating their stories in the 21st century.

You say the drawings are the closest that we can get to seeing a Jack the Ripper victim. Well no. Maybe it is for taste or monetisation on TH-cam but photographs taken at the time of the room both outside and in and of the body are on the web. I was quite surprised that you did not use them. An unpleasant image of the body is on the Wikipedia page.

That's no what I said at all. I said that the Pall Mall Gazette account is the closest we are going to get to witnessing the aftermath of a Jack the Ripper murder and of the scene at the mortuary ad the location at which the murder occurred. In addition, I do not use the photograph of Mary Kelly in the room in any of my videos. As you say it is on the web if people want to see it, but a lot of people do not like looking at it. As you say, it is an "unpleasant image" and it does not serve any real purpose showing it.

I have read somewhere that the killer (killers?) may have spent two hours mutilating Mary Kelly.

Leave it to the British to make such a spectacle of a simple police procedure....! Jury, court hearing instead of investigating the crime. When you expose in that matter the body of the victim, you are, in fact advertising ways in which only the perpetrator would know, therefore botching the investigation...!

Well, what's really haunting is the fact that Mary Kelly doesn't exist. So it really shows how gullible people are. The lengths that people will go to just to be relevant..

It's likely if not inevitable that the ghoul Charlie Cross will turnout to be Mary's dad - it's hard to disprove so it's therefore possible . Where are my manners Hello there Richard .

We have no evidence that Charles Cross was a "ghoul", and he'd only have been in his early to mid teens when Mary Kelly was likely born.

Jack the Ripper was a POLICE OFFICER
There was a report of one officer in this timeline in this area who was caught “ interfering with a corpse “
    Doesn’t it make sense now
