      Miles "Tails" Prower

  • @Xilefian
    @Xilefian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +249

16:48 well they didn't have all the other characters, so there was no such convention of "X the Y". Miles "Tails" Prower comes from localisation concerns between the Japanese and US market, Japanese market having the name Miles, US market Tails - by designating "Tails" as a nick-name and "Miles" as the real name created a real golden nugget of world-building and character building. They turned a localisation concern difference into a small bit of character building which added far more personality to the character than "Tails the Fox" would have done.
As a gamer, this kind of stuff might seem needless to you, but it contributed to turning Tails into a marketing point for Sonic 2 - along with the bizarreness of having two-tails (which in Japan would have been less bizarre, as multi-tailed fox creatures already existed as part of Japanese folk-lore).
I can definitely say that as a child I used to talk to my friends about how Tail's real name is Miles and then we'd all gather round the TV or read the instruction booklet and try to find the name "Miles" and the game felt really cool whenever we saw the name, felt like it was hinting at a secret inside the game. It was another thing to talk about in the playground, even with kids who didn't own the game - and that's how video game marketing worked back in those days.
The entire rant came across as grasping at straws, the reality is Miles "Tails" Prower was a good bit of easy lore & character building and drove the marketing behind a two-tailed fox companion for Sonic. It does nothing for the gameplay itself (story never does), but it did loads for the brand.

I remember reading somewhere that in early versions of the game, Tails was intended to be a guardian of Westside Island(the island where Sonic 2 takes place) akin to how Knuckles was the guardian of Angel Island in Sonic 3. Tails was depicted as a Kitsune and his goal was to lead you inward towards the location of the Hidden Palace, where Sonic would ultimately locate the resting place of the 7th, and final Chaos Emerald.
Another interesting bit of trivia: The Sonic series dropped subtle hints towards the existence of the Echidna tribe long before Sonic 3. In Sonic 1's Labyrinth Zone, there are blocks that make up the foreground, some of which are marked with an owl-like insignia. These Insignias are also peppered throughout Hydrocity Zone's aquaducts in Sonic 3. What's more is that Sonic 2's JP prologue mentions that Westside Island was once the home of an ancient civilization(The Echidna Tribe) that waged war amongst itself over control of the Chaos Emeralds, resulting in a great cataclysm(very likely the birth of SA1's Chaos) before they fled the island. We get to see small snippets of this story retold in Sonic Adventure during the flashback sequences with Tikal. While I wouldn't consider Sonic Adventure a relevant canon to consult when considering Classic Sonic lore, I feel that it's use of this storytelling element signifies that the writers still felt the need to address this untouched chapter.
The final piece of evidence that ties this theory together was that the removed zone, 'Hidden Palace' was later used in Sonic 3. While it's true that Sonic 2's Hidden Palace Zone featured no Master Emerald, it did feature lookalikes which could be shattered with a jump. One could infer that the Master Emerald was once simply, one of these breakable gems prior to Chaos' imprisonment within its' facets. Upon Chaos being sealed away, the survivors of the Echidna tribe relocated the M.E to their new home on Angel Island. In conclusion: Sonic 2's Hidden Palace was likely the origin-place of SA1's Chaos and Angel Island's Master Emerald.

Well, I feel like there is a misconception here. Tails does not take away from YOUR ring count in special stages. He has his own amount of rings, and he's also behind you. So, technically, he only gets the rings you would have missed regardless.
Though, I didnt know he made the ring count required go up.
Also, Tails is muh boi. You get off my fluffy, tiny, two tailed, lightning fearing, mechanic child or I will fight you.
Strangely enough, I never knew why I took such a liking to Tails. I think it might have been Sat AM Tails but even then his character wasnt super compelling. I do find it funny that I never noticed that Tails defeats both past and future naming convention.

Was I the only one that thought the obvious solution was to have a friend play as Tails for you? Like, not a kid brother that doesn't know how to play, but another adult that at has at least an average level of skill at classic Sonic. It makes getting the emeralds easier even if they increased the ring count. Your friend won't be fucked over by lag the same way the AI Tails is.

Now I can beat it with Knuckles, where the weak spot is just above where you can jump. Throwing Sonic 2 on top of S&K made for an interesting experience, to say the least. At least Knuckles makes Metropolis way easier. Point is, this boss was hard, but it's the kind of boss that can be beaten with experience and persistence. It was a classic 90s boss. Plus, that aesthetic was amazing.

    My favorite Sonic 2 Bosses.
    1. Death Egg - Death Egg Robot
Such an impressive and challenging final boss, and a huge step up from Sonic 1. No matter how many times to beat this game, you'll feel satisfied knowing you conquered Robotnik at his absolute best.
    2. Wing Fortress Zone
A fittingly difficult boss fight for the final full zone. Robotnik finally has you cornered and unleashes a deady trap to end you for good.
    3. Emerald Hill Zone
A simple, yet iconic first boss. This also the first time Robotnik used a ground-based machine, aside from the pistons in Final Zone, showing an early glimpse of the diversity he's bringing to the table compared to Sonic 1.
    4. Oil Ocean Zone
A memorable boss that shows off Robotnik's ingenuity. He makes his escape under the dangerous Oil Ocean, forcing Sonic to deal with his deadly (and invulnerable) weapons until he returns.
    5. Death Egg - Mecha (Silver) Sonic
While technically not the first Sonic doppelganger, it was the first to pose a legitimate threat. This guy guards Robotnik, and he keeps coming back every time the Egg Robot takes you down.
    6. Metropolis Zone
This boss was a step up in difficulty compared to everything that came before. If it wasn't for that precious ring tether it would likely be even harder than the Death Egg Robot. Timing your hits is difficult, and Robotnik flees to safety every time you manage a hit.
    7. Mystic Cave Zone
This boss is all about aesthetic. As he drills through the ground it feels like he's trying to bury you alive. The real challenge is dodging debris.
    8. Aquatic Ruin Zone
Robotnik's weapon is just a hammer, but it's what he does with it that matters. He uses the environment against you, and Sonic needs to do the same to turn the tables.
    9. Casino Night Zone
It's fun to spin up and down the walls, but you can be completely derailed if you're not careful. The setting is fun, giving you much of the mechanics from a great zone, but the boss is comparatively uninspired. Chances are Robotnik will spend most of the time offscreen as you zoom around the stage. With such a big arena to explore it would help if Robotnik moved around more.
    10. Chemical Plant Zone
This can be aggravating if you have Tails jump in front of Sonic, causing him to tumble into a quick death if you're unlucky enough to land when the floor is flipped. Aside from the stage hazard, this boss is pretty simple.
    11. Hill Top Zone
This isn't a bad boss battle, but it just ended up down here because there isn't much to it. Robotnik comes out of the lava, shoots fire at you, and repeats from the other side.

There’s a difference between taken to Green Hill-like levels, 1-1-like or Dreamland-like levels, and being taken to those exact same levels over and over.
Sega has a tendency to make nearly 1:1 remakes of Green Hill over and over. Notice how no one complained about Seaside Hill despite it being the checkboard, spiky grass, seaside level? It’s because it had its own identity and could easily be distinguished from the other stages like it (Green Hill, Emerald Hill, Angel Island, Green Grove, Emerald Coast, Palmtree PanIc, hell, even Splash Hill.) It’s not that people mind the checkerboard, grassy plain stages. Rather people mind being taken back to Green Hill every game.

I feel like Angel Island and Emerald Coast shouldn't be grouped in the Green Hill knockoffs. For angel island it is more of a jungle type level and the fire changes the aesthetic greatly. And for emerald coast it is a beach level for the most part.

Recently came across your videos, and I saw your S&K/Sonic 3 video first where you talked better about Tails but hinted at your feelings about him. In my house, the better player usually played as Tails over Sonic. Sonic player’s only job was to not die. Tails player’s job was to wreck everything, at least until the Sonic only stages at the end. See Dorkly’s Tails Can’t Die video for reference. I loved the character until the 3D games, but even then I still liked him.

I've always wondered why the final boss has no rings to fight, then I noticed that on the classics they ALWAYS put the last checkpoint before the boss without any rings if you not backtrack. So I think the developers idea is that the ideal fight with the bosses are suposed to be without rings if you fail? Probably.

My favorite Sonic 2 songs. Taste in music is heavily based on personal preference, so there are no wrong answers here.
    1. Chemical Plant Zone
A sweet, jazzy song. There's a reason this zone keeps coming back, and the song is a big part of it.
    2. Metropolis Zone
An edgy techno beat that makes you feel like you're in a big mechanical city. The automated obstacles it the Zone move along with the beat, making it feel alive.
    3. Mystic Cave Zone
A fittingly eerie song with a great bass riff to go with it. This track feels menacing and fits well with the underground theme of the zone.
    4. Casino Night Zone
A chill jazz song that makes you want to slow down and gamble some rings. This song would fit in just fine playing in a casino on an endless loop.
    5. Emerald Hill Zone
A vibrant song that just makes you want to run.
    6. Aquatic Ruin Zone
Makes you feel like you're entering a strange aquatic land. The fast-past song works better if you're dashing through the top half of the zone.
    7. Oil Ocean Zone
An exotic song that has a bit of a Middle-Eastern vibe. The sound is as unique as the level itself. There's never really been anything quite like this in a Sonic game.
    8. Wing Fortress Zone
A booming, triumphant song. It gets a bit choppy in some places because of the sound effects.
    9. Hill Top Zone
I'm just not a fan of country/western. If you are, that's just fine, but I'm not.
    10. Death Egg Zone
This song is kind of odd, but you aren't meant to listen very long. It gets a bit too shrill if you wait a while, but why would you?
    11. Sky Chase Zone
Just lulls you to sleep, which would be fine if it wasn't the semi-final level in a Sonic game. It fits with the level, but the level doesn't fit with the game.
Overall, this is a great soundtrack. Every song fits very well with the level it's in.

I did love Tails back then. I found him adorable, especially when he yawned, looked up, or ducked like he was getting ready to pounce something. Adventure turning him into a nerd who...speaks...ruined his character entirely for me. But I loved Mute Tails in these classic games. My only issue was I kept trying for months, trying to figure out how to make Tails fly. Wasn't til Sonic 3 came out when I realized he wasn't CAPABLE of flying. ...So why did the game keep teasing that he COULD fly, and not actually have the ability to do so? This is my most major gripe about Sonic 2.
I always wanted to play the remake, unfortunately mobile games are unplayable... Why won't they just release it on console or Steam? Bought it for my Cellphone, and just can't play it. It's impossible.

The touch controls on Sonic 1 and 2 mobile are a lot better because you don't have to hit the button exactly and can adjust the size if the D-pad. It translates super well but a controller is better. I mean you could connect a Joy-Con or something to it using Bluetooth.

This was the first game I was ever hyped about. I remember watching the first gameplay from a VHS video that I got with a Mean Machines magazine and just watched the gameplay over and over. The idea of playing two players, on the same screen, at the same time, was just mind blowing. And I loved Tails. A character that can fly! This was mind blowing back in the day. Seriously, the marketing for this games was just incredible (in the UK, anyway).
It wouldnt be until the Dreamcast era before I got so super excited for another video game (I loved the Saturn, but that system had games I only got hyped for after I had bought, played, and loved).
Sonic 2 really is a hard game to quantify just how excited it was unless you were there at the time of its build up and release.

I find the split screen in Sonic 2 works because it is a compressed version of the main art, with all the physics tuned to make it feel right. It falls apart in Sonic 3 not because they simply scaled down the sprites but because they didn't do as good a job making it feel right.
Also, nice icon. Did you really meet the Sonic mascot?

My favorite levels in Sonic 2. It was tough to come up with this list since there are so many good zones to pick from. Please don't judge me, but feel free to leave your own opinion.
    1. Casino Night Zone
Never has underage gambling been so much fun. This is a flashy level that sucks up plenty of play time.
    2. Chemical Plant Zone
You never forget the first time you go down that big hill. Sonic was so fast he practically blasted right off the screen, and Sega made sure everybody knew that.
    3. Mystic Cave Zone
Some nice obstacles and a very cool design help this zone stand out.
    4. Metropolis Zone
I don't hate this zone. It's challenging, and has some real tough enemies, but it makes you feel pretty good after you beat it.
    5. Emerald Hill Zone
Right from the start we get a great opening zone. There are plenty of loops to zip through and, unlike Green Hill Zone, there isn't much to slow you down.
    6. Oil Ocean Zone
There are some great mechanics here that utilize the viscosity of oil. This zone has the most interesting ways to get around, with oil slides, elevators, flame-propelled platforms and cannons.
    7. Hill Top Zone
Plenty of uphill climbs here, as the name suggests. There are some interesting sections when you get underground.
    8. Aquatic Ruin Zone
I always forget this level exists. It's a fun little zone, but it doesn't do enough to stand out, particularly compared to the levels before and after it. By the time I'm halfway through Casino Night Zone I've already forgotten it.
    9. Wing Fortress Zone
A big, empty zone with some frustrating sections hovering over big, empty deathpits. I always thought this was pretty bland for a final level, with beige as the primary color.
    10. Sky Chase Zone
It's not bad, but it's mostly just there. This Is basically a Sonic railshooter that forces you to move at the zone's pace. The turtle badniks are the best part.
There isn't really a bad zone in Sonic 2 in my opinion. The decisive top two for me are all-time greats that can really go in any order. After that it was really hard to decide on the order for #3-8.

Metropolis Zone is actually one of my all time favorite Sonic the Hedgehog levels. Wing Fortress being close to it in terms of how much I love it.
You can always tell only children from younger brothers by their attitude towards Tails. If you always played the game alone and relied on the AI in Sonic 2, you hate him. If you were handed the player 2 controller and helped achieve massive victories against the bosses by abusing your invincibility you recognize him as a badass and a very useful sidekick.
In short, Tails is the best Sonic character and primary redeeming factor of the series.

It's because if you have a second player with you (who is conpetant), getting the rings is A LOT easier. Which makes getting the emerald easier.
So to counter that, they add 10/20 rings you have to get per round. Sometimes more depending on the level.

7:45 no it's not, it's exactly the same size. All the Sonic games on the Genesis/Mega Drive are at the same resolution with the Sonic sprite being the same size.
There is no concept of a "camera" as this is 2D, fixed-resolution graphics, further more the hardware back then didn't have the capability of "zooming" or enlarging the entire screen (even the SNES could only zoom and rotate 1 background layer, not the entire screen with all the sprites).
One thing that did change between Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 is the size of the level chunks, which went from 256x256 pixels in Sonic 1 to 128x128 in Sonic 2, which meant more detail in stages could be crammed into a smaller view-area, which may give the impression that Sonic looks larger and that he moves through the stage faster, but this definitely is not the reality, just the perception.

Ok but I love the commercial for sonic 2 that treats it like a “as seen on TV” commercial.
Extra: Reminder, this was made in the 90s, y’know, when “as seen on TV” ads were not a comedic set piece. Products like flex tape and slap chop became memes these past two decades, so having a sonic game poke fun at those ads makes it so much better. Plus, the actual gameplay is such a minor feature in the commercial, it’s like “oh hey, this is a actual game by the way, ok back to cleaning solutions”. I love it so much

The more I think about it, the more sense Tails makes. He's not a fox
    He's a kitsune
They are key mythological figures in Japanese folklore - A fox after so long alive is thought to grow another tail, and gain one for every 100 years alive, up to 9. Kitsune can be good or evil, and are known shapeshifters. Tails, as seen in Sonic Lost World, can move each fur strand on his tails independently. His method of flight doesn't make sense as it's actually _magic_ - He's, whether or not Tails actually realizes this, is shape shifting his tails to work like helicoptor blades
This also means Tails has a lot more potential than other characters

good analysis; in fact, it was my first thought when i first saw him as a kid playing sonic 2, it's not even helping we don't even know a thing about his origins.
A story like that has potential: tails questions himself and he goes around the world looking for answers using the tornado, eggman is plotting something in a japan stand-in, tails notices it, tries to stop him and maybe he can find clues about his past there.
Now, i'm not saying he has to be 2000 y/o and have a kyuubi form (hell nah, that should be avoided). the concept of "using mythologies but make some tweaks for it to fit in your world" exists, sonic team could introduce mythology to sonic's world by using ones from real life but making some changes to fit in and add an original touch. Hell they can even make a case like abe no seimei, half kitsune: one of tail's parents were a kitsune and during birth they gave him one of their tails, thus the high intelligence and being able to fly while still looking like a regular fox and being 8.

I, as well, grew up on Sonic 2, & Knuckles, Sonic 1, and 3 (in that order. We weren't swimming in cash growing up) and I've gotta say, I've never seen that ending in Sonic 2 after collecting all of the emeralds as far as I remember. Granted, I've Super Sonic'd my way through numerous times, I just don't recall that Knuckles Easter Egg at the end or the smashed up Death Egg Walker.
I guess it's time to pop in my childhood favorite again and show my son why it's one of my favorite games.

About metropolis zone: I know this an old-ass video, but IIRC based on sonicretro and such that it's only 3 acts because they rolled the scrapped Genocide City zone into it. Based on design documents they had, it was going to be something like scrap brain, but ended up being similar enough to the existing metropolis that they simply added it in as a 3rd act with the same assets. From a pure gameplay standpoint, that 3rd act absolutely threw me for a loop though on my first playthrough!

From what I remember the reason for the third act in Metropolis Zone is because there was a level they designed then repurposed.

@Muse Suse I mean, y'know, he *is* right It's why I've never got into Mario. Every couple of years I'll throw Mario World on and REALLY try to get into it. I'll get a power up and go "Wow, that's cool" (stuff like the floating/flying cape), but within five minutes I'm bored. There are a few reasons, but yeah, even when I got past my Sega fanboyism and started really enjoying the SNES library, Mario never grabbed me
