One of the biggest hidden gems when it comes to Sonic soundtracks. As a kid with a 32X, I played this game a ton even though I knew it stunk compared to the Genesis Sonics
Honestly I feel like most of the problems with the tether could have been avoided by simply giving the player the ability to turn on an off the tether physics. With the physics off, the second character still follows around the player character in single player similar to Tails in Sonic 2, but doesn't pull at the player at all, nor does the player pull on them. At the press of a button, you can enable and disable those tether physics to make use of it when you want it without having to deal with it holding you back. Just imagine the new skill ceiling that would be created by giving the player that kind of power. That's the kind of thing I would love to see explored in a future game such as Mania 2.
Excellent work, as always, man! I've never heard anyone elucidate what it was like to experience Chaotix as a kid in the 90s, and that really resonated with me, because it matched my experience. I owned the rest of the series on Genesis and Game Gear, and could dig into them as much as I wanted. But I could only play Sonic CD and Chaotix on those rare occasions, maybe two or three times a year, when my parents would let me rent a Sega CD or 32X for a weekend. Like you said, my time with them was like a dream, and because of that, they both had this air of special mystique to them.
Listening to you and your wife discuss the two-player experience was awesome! It was cool of her to do that with you. Your conversation reminded me of playing Chaotix with my brothers. This vid was so worth the wait!

44:56 I was also quite disappointed that Chaotix wasn't on Sonic Gems. It seemed for a while that Sega was bringing every Sonic game they ever made onto the GameCube or PS2. Advnture 1 & 2 were remade. The Mega Collection included all of the Genesis Sonic games and even threw in Flicky and Ristar. MC+ threw in 6 of the Game Gear Sonics. Gems was made to fill out the roster for the CD, Saturn, and the rest of the Game Gear, but somehow the old 32x was ignored. Even the arcade title Sonic Fighters made it into Gems. They sent out all of those Sonic games, all of the spinoffs, and even several non-Sonic Sega games, but they still wouldn't make room for Knuckles Chaotix. Out of nearly 40 games Chaotix was still kept off the list. That's just insulting.
There’s clear evidence it was to be included, as a whole area of the museum is devoted to Chaotix artwork. The official reason given by Sega as to why the game was left out is stated as “emulation issues” (probably also why Sonic CD on Gems Collection uses the heavily inferior 1996 PC port).
@@Mechasonicrocks Maybe it's just me, but that sounds like excuses honestly. Knuckles Chaotix was available on GameTap before that service shut down in 2015, so clearly it must have ran fine when it existed. Unless some really weird stuff happened when they tried to emulate it.

Though im not gonna beat around the bush and defend its flaws haha. Great video sir! I love when Chaotix videos pop up, it makes me feel validated for finally buying the beautiful, overpriced, relaxing, labyrinthine mess! 😎👍 I always wanted it way back when I was a teenager and I kept putting it off, but then I got the chance to pick up a cheap 32x with a few carts so I tracked it down and fell in love with it, warts and all 😍 I think I'll have a run through it tomorrow in celebration of watching this video 😁🎊🎉
The long awaited review of this game. The is single handily the most justice, unbiased review I can now claim for this most in depth experienced coverage for this game. And The Chaotix as a whole. What an excellent way to end this series. I still wished it was given a second shot, and given a proper rerelease. :p
For me, with my personal history with the game, it took on a sort of mythical quality. I actually had a 32X as a kid (mom got it on clearance at Blockbuster for $15) and I remember getting Chaotix at a Walmart, and the cartridge.. would just freeze up randomly. None of my other 32X games had that problem, and it turned out the game had corrosion on the contacts, so I returned it, and the copy I exchanged it for had the same issue... and when I returned that copy, they Walmart associate told me that the entire shipment had to be recalled, and that they weren't going to be getting any more 32X games at all. So, I had this childhood snapshot of the game permanently in my mind, almost like a "lost" Sonic game, and it wasn't until I started watching TH-cam that I ever even saw gameplay of the game again. I hope one day it can get a modern rerelease in some compilation or another, if nothing else for its value as a part of Sonic's history
I wish he talked about how the 32X’s marketing was basically console sex, also Knuckles Chaotix was planned to be on the gems collection along with game like Sega Sonic the Hedgehog. They decided to not for “hardware limitations” which for Sega Sonic I understand but there is no way a 32x game couldn’t run on GameCube.
I may never play this, but somehow, after all the videos, it has gained some space in my heart, weird right? Hahaha, great video man, I can't wait for more content in your channel!
That big ol' red final boss was nightmare fuel to young teen me. I saw that maw and memories flooded back to me. I loved this game so much, and it was definitely because of the music and Sound Test. Door Into Summer is still one of my favorite songs
Taking into account your idea of Knuckles Chaotix focusing on Heavy and Bomb. How well would the game have been received if it had been developed around the two robots with Team Chaotix as characters you unlock by progressing through the game?
The outro music will always remind me that, despite the jank, despite the flaws, despite the questionable design choices, if there's one thing Sonic games always get right, it's the music! 🎶
32:34 I guess you know it already, but Mania has somethin similar with the flying super Sonic cheat code, and it is also present in the Sonic 3 remaster
You wanted all of this Knuckles Knovember to come out in one month?!? I'll gladly take the extra months if it leads to the polish like this video. Congrats on another *unapologetic*ally good video!
25:04 this was kinda personal to me knowing that my Sonic Generations disc was busted and only had the first level. and I still had months of fun with if.
4:06 Kolibiri was actually a pretty interesting game, and for the time it looked absolutely gorgeous with highly detailed sprites and lush backgrounds. It isn't much by today's standards, and it certainly isn't worth $100+ just to play it on the original cartridge.
I’m so glad I found this channel. After November Chaotix, I made it a point to go through and replay each Sonic game I had access to while analyzing it through a “critical” lense. I looked at how the game taught its players, how they built up the mechanics, and the creative platforming that still holds up today. I love seeing the risks. I found myself smiling and laughing at stage hazards that “unfairly” stole my rings or killed me because I didn’t know what was coming. I just beat Sonic Mania and it gave me a whole new appreciation for how willing it was to return to the spirit of the Genesis era. I hope I get a chance to play Chaotix soon. I also need to get ahold of pretty much all the 3D titles that weren’t the Adventure games or Shadow. This channel makes me want to delve in to all the games to see what they were trying to do. I have always been a Sonic fan, but now I feel equipped to be a Sonic expert... mostly by quoting you and trying to sound smart. Thank you!
You know, I am pretty sure I know how Chaotix happened. The rubberband mechanic almost certainly began when someone asked "How do we make Tails actually PART of a Sonic game instead of just floating around behind the player?" It makes SENSE when looked at from this perspective. And then a demo was coded up(Sonic Crackers). And with the concept proving to be workable, a game was developed around it. And once they had an actual game around it, the flaws started to become apparent, but by that point there was a staff, a release date, a marketing budget. So they soldiered on and kept trying to make it work. Eventually, much like the 32x itself, they realized it was just a bad idea and shouldn't exist, but no one had the authority to cancel it outright. So they took Sonic out of it entirely, to avoid damaging the brand too badly. And that kind of mirrors the 32x's story. Sega America's market surveys told them people wanted an affordable upgrade which didn't leave their existing Genesis libraries behind. So the 32x entered development, with plans to replace the Genesis with a Genesis/32x all-in-one and offer an upgrade for existing owners. By the time it became clear that the Saturn was happening and landing at basically the exact same time, no one involved had the authority to kill it, so it limped out the door to a brutally short life and undignified death. (Saturn, of course, had the problem that Sega Japan simply didn't consider America's concern about price points and back-compatibility, and it hurt the system from day one.)
If nothing else, I love this game because it is one of the few Sonic games that feature Mighty the Armadillo. This is the game that introduced me to Mighty and I was instantly drawn to the character, and I've been a fan ever since. I was ecstatic that Mighty returned in Mania and I would hope that Sega would continue to make use of the character and just bring him into the main timeline. I have no idea why they would just brush him to the side. In any case, Chaotix is definitely a guilty pleasure that resides fondly in my memories from the first time I played it.
AHHHHHH! The video we all been waiting for! THE CONCLUSION TO CHAOTIX NOVEMBER!!! This has been such an awesome series! The deep dive break down of this game! This has been so good! Thanks Nick! Look forward to the next series and other future videos! Toot Toot!!

"Don't buy a 32x Just to play knuckles Chaotix"
About that...
Another great video Mr. Apologist, loved the new credits too
Honestly, I think Knuckles Chaotix kinda looks fun. I might play it.
Honestly the thing i love the most about Chaotix and Sonic CD even is the atmosphere of the game, i just love to enter the wacky psychedelic world of those games when playing them and fantasize about them, the art and music is so beautiful, better than the gameplay even imo
YOOOOO SAME Sonic CD is honestly my favorite game of all time since its my 1st sonic game and even one of the 1st games ive ever played! I adore how the levels look and the music is top notch. Though im not gonna beat around the bush and defend its flaws haha. Tho ive havent played chaotix, but i like how it looks and sounds, and door into summer is absolutely one of my fav songs in general
very true
Same :3
Great video sir!
Bro cybershell being in this vid made my fucking day. You both are great.
This game is worth it just for the Music and art
I love the idea of that progression, but you'd still have to rework the game to take better advantage of all these mechanics.
"This level, is called speed slider."
"Mhm."
I'd love to watch this live but it premieres at 5am in Canberra

"The worst version of doom"
3DO and SNES port:
Nice appearance from Game Apologistress. Never thought about the potential of this as a multiplayer experience
The outro music will always remind me that, despite the jank, despite the flaws, despite the questionable design choices, if there's one thing Sonic games always get right, it's the music! 🎶
I've been talking about the multiplayer in this FOR YEARS. FINALLY someone else is talking about it XD
If NOTHING else, this game gave us Door Into Summer.
Thank you, Tee Lopes.
5 bucks says he got a playful smack for "Toot-toot, Wifey Warrior". :P
The special stages reminds me of one of the games from cool math when I was younger
Nick is losing all his friends over opinions of Sonic games
32:34 I guess you know it already, but Mania has somethin similar with the flying super Sonic cheat code, and it is also present in the Sonic 3 remaster
Nice to the Chaotix Arc come to a good closing. Now how about that Adventure Arc? :)))
You wanted all of this Knuckles Knovember to come out in one month?!? I'll gladly take the extra months if it leads to the polish like this video. Congrats on another *unapologetic*ally good video!
My guy really calling me out for having the 3DS Amiibo adapter and still actively using it
29:21 you don’t get a halfpipe, you get Run before Run was Run
I forgot that Nick wasn't a simp nerd but a married nerd
my favorite way to play Chaotix is to ignore the tether and hold vector like a giant spinning chainsaw for 90% of the game.
When you work in... TANDEM?
g-gettit? like, because there's two...characters...?
Seeing a new game apologist makes me happy.
ESPECIALLY about Sonic.
Gives me hope as a fellow Iowan with the dream of doing what you do ;).
I’m so excited!
Sing out you heroes!
I've seldom clicked on a video so fast, but I've been waiting on this video since this series started! It's finally here! Great work!
Got so excited waking up to see this... And it's a coming attraction reminder .... Ohhhhh the anticipation!
"coming attraction reminder"
What even is this word salad?
Just say premiere...
It's great to see this channel grow. Love the content and the balance of humor, discussion, and analysis.
Can't wait for the premiere!
@Anime Rocksteady yep
Incredible review. Loved your whole Chaotix series! Great job and the whole thing! 👏🏿
20 other people here and no one is chatting...
Thank you!
If you like a full game thats just like these cool special stages there is the mobile/flash game run. (No advertisment, just a recommendation) °^°
So they took Sonic out of it entirely, to avoid damaging
the brand too badly.
Yo, Gilly can sing
If nothing else, I love this game because it is one of the few Sonic games that feature Mighty the Armadillo. This is the game that introduced me to Mighty and I was instantly drawn to the character, and I've been a fan ever since. I was ecstatic that Mighty returned in Mania and I would hope that Sega would continue to make use of the character and just bring him into the main timeline. I have no idea why they would just brush him to the side. In any case, Chaotix is definitely a guilty pleasure that resides fondly in my memories from the first time I played it.
It took me a sec to process Nick referring to his wife as someone bonded to him by a ring. Top tier joke 10/10 lol
We have so much quality to look forward to from this channel
Those faces look at them they are epic pure epic faces
AHHHHHH! The video we all been waiting for! THE CONCLUSION TO CHAOTIX NOVEMBER!!! This has been such an awesome series! The deep dive break down of this game! This has been so good! Thanks Nick! Look forward to the next series and other future videos! Toot Toot!!
It is going to be good
there's so much heart in this video, and it really really shows
He’s just delaying for years for adventure but it could be how long he makes these
Brilliant video dude, subscribed! I love Knuckles Chaotix too I find it so fun and relaxing
I’ve always liked Chaotix, despite its multitude of issues.
Amazing how you've been able to talk and analyze about Chaotix for almost 4 months straight. But it worked, because I really want to try it out someday soon!! Thank you for all the great videos!
Great thumbnail.
These capstone videos are always so fun. Love seeing how much you improve with each video.
