Such a revolutionary video game! I got into this series via Sonic Dash, and then I saw this game. I got the game, and played it. Boy, was it fun. I played this game with all of the characters (I played the Whitehead port). This game is a blast to play through, over and over and over. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 strengthened my bond with these games and characters. I can't thank it enough for that.
When I was about 4, I got a Plug N Play Sega Genesis console with Sonic 2 on it. There was 6 games on the console but Sonic 2 was the most fun and my most played game on it, so many fond memories of waking up in the morning to play my favorite game. I could always beat Emerald Hill with no problem but Chemical Plant is where I'd get Game Overs on constantly, some popular death spots would be the vertical shaft, falling off the switching platforms before the boss, and the platforms at the boss. I don't remember how long it took me to finally beat Chemical Plant but when I did it was the most satisfying feeling in the world. Aquatic Ruin was a breeze and so was Casino Night but I don't remember how far I exactly got when I was a kid, it might've been Metroplois but I'm not sure. Even at the age of 20 I find some of the later stages pretty hard like Wing Fortress
The sonic movie 2 really blasted me back to my childhood. I grew up playing Sonic 1, 2, and 3, and I still play them often today. Sonic 2 and 3 being tied for my favorite sonic game. I recently came across your channel and I love your videos. I hope you're planning to make a video on Sonic 3 :)

@@MashupProductions22 there is a speed boster after some of those moving blocks and a slope. Jump past the boster turn left anď spindash jump using the slope.
I’ll never forget the first time I made it past the Chemical Plant steps. After so many attempts I finally made it through only to get halted by the boss. However now having the confidence I can make it back I booted up the game again immediately. I beat the boss, and after that I made it all the way to Hilltop Zone. I may have not beat the game, but I didn’t care. I felt proud getting further than I thought I ever could.
Whilst I definitely feel this game dips in the second half and certainly was rushed, it’s a great sequel that just demolished the original in a good way that set up the series for success.
I personally loved this game more than any other Sonic game, I have beat it multiple times and got super sonic. This game was really what started a great era of games.
Fun fact:Originally, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was supposed to have time travel, and originally this game was supposed to take place on South Island and originally there was a different zones order, this is this order: (Present Time) Green Hill Zone (Early Emerald Hill Zone) Ocean Wind Zone (Cut Tropical/Beach Zone) Wood(s) Zone (Cut Forest Zone) Sand Shower Zone (Cut Desert Zone) Metropolis Zone (Ancient Time) Tropical Plant/Tropical Summer/Tropical Sun Zone (Cut Tropical/Beach Zone) Hill Top Zone Blue Lake/Blue Ocean Zone (Cut Underwater Zone) Rock World Zone (Cut Winter Zone) (Ruined Present Time) Rock World Zone (Again) Oil Ocean Zone Dust Hill Zone (Early Mystic Cave Zone, before the name Mystic Cave Zone, this zone was also known as Madness Mountain Zone) Death Egg Zone (Ancient Time after a big tsunami) Hill Top Zone (Again) Blue Lake/Blue Ocean Zone (Again) Tropical Plant/Tropical Summer/Tropical Sun Zone (Again) (Future Time) Casino Night Zone Chemical Plant Zone Genocide City/Cyber City Zone (Cut Futuristic City Zone) Fire Mountain/Volcano Zone (Cut Volcano Zone) (later replaced by Neo Green Hill Zone aka Early Aquatic Ruin Zone) Neo Death Egg Zone (Cut Space Zone) And some of the music was originally for other zones, for example Emerald Hill 2P Theme has for Tropical Plant/Tropical Sun/Tropical Summer Zone Oil Ocean Theme has for Sand Shower Zone Casino Night 2P Theme has for Oil Ocean Zone
i know for some player, tails feel useless, but when i was young my father call me to take the second controller to help him defeat a boss as tails. when i get a little bit older and play as Sonic, when i was against a boss i call my little sister to take tails.
I love this game, it's my 2nd favorite Sonic game and in my top 10 favorite games in general. I've beaten this game like 2 times already this year and will likely beat it again once Origins comes out. I love every zone in this game even Metropolis mostly because of the music.
For me Super Sonic became a fun challange when I realized you can get Super Sonic before the first boss. It made resetting for it less frustrating. Also I know it takes the charm away a bit, but changing so you only play as Sonic removes the a lot of the special stage headache. Also there was a bug with the Megadrive so if you hit reset on the console, the game would remember how many Emeralds you had because the power was never cut from the game. So I would sometimes make it so I had Super Sonic by the time I had 50 Rings xD
Sonic 2 is my childhood game even though I was born in 1997. It was so awesome & still is. The only bad part is that there was no saving on my dad's Sega Genesis so I had to start over at level 1 every single time.
Definitely my favourite sonic game mainly cos of nostalgia but tbh I think it has some of the best levels for momentum and speed in the whole series at least in terms of 2d
I remember losing at sonic 1 (in Scrap brain act 3/Labyrinth Zone act 4) and Sonic 2 (The Death egg Zone) and almost gave up since I had to restart it all over again, but I didn't, and it was the best choice I have made since I beaten the 2 games, and I also beat Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic Pinball
This reminds me of Sonic Colors, a lot of people don’t like it because “Slow Blocky 2D Platforming” which I myself was starting to believe until I mastered it. Now I can blitz right threw the game. Even in Stages that have those Slowly Descending Platform by utilizing Shortcuts and the Wisps.
If I am correct, if you are good enough at the special and know where the check points are by exploring, you can get super Sonic before you even reach chemical plant.
Actually this is my favourite sonic game because I'm more into speed: also I think the spindash is the most iconic move set for sonic EVER. To be honest this is the sonic game that I mostly grew up with on my ps2
17:08 You know you can take Tails off by only selecting "Sonic" in the options menu, right? XD I mean it actually, for a long while as a kid in the 1990s, I didn't knew that. After that I only played as Sonic & Tails when my brother was around, otherwise, solo-Sonic playthroughs for me.
while normal Sonic 2 ending is more heartfelt, Super Sonic ending creates a more cohesive plot when going into Sonic 3 when he goes super in the first cutscene
I’ve always had save states for the darn stupid Special Stages. Sonic Origins will let you use coins to retry, but that still means you have to complete the whole stage and not just a part, at least it will have a better field of view.
This game was the sonic game that got me into this series (yes i played mania before, but never got into it) and that just two years ago and i still play it because it's that much fun for me, banger soundtrack, super sonic and you can hate me but i still prefer sonic 2s halfpipe over sonic 3s blue sphere (even when i hate the collision detection of the ring in the original), and that all happend on my tablet because of one night were i couldn't sleep.
I only played Sonic 2 once and it's on my psp but for some fucking reason when you collect all the emerald chaos and finish the game, instead of staying with you, they just disappear and you replay with nothing...
If you hold up then jump and jump again while still holding up tails will start flying and if you jump under him while he's still in the air you will grab onto him and if you press the jump button in mid-air you can fly
The saddest part about everything you have said is how Sonic 1, 2, and 3 (sonic and knuckles with expansion pack) were meant to be sold as 1 entire game.
I completely disagree about Marble Zone in Sonic 1. In pretty much every part that you show to demonstrate how slow it is, there are several ways to go much faster. And I don't mean speedrunner tricks: simply jump from one set of blocks floating above the lava to the other (10:59). It's just another clever way of using the momentum you always mention. You can also go very quickly under the crushing pillars if you jump before reaching them instead of being stopped all the time. And in the few parts where it's not possible to go fast without getting hit, just get hit, take your rings back, and use invincibility frames to run past everything. (There's just one lava pool where it's impossible because you need to use the block to go higher.) Admittedly it's a less obvious and instinctive way to go fast than in the next Sonic games. But it still shows you can improve in that one too if you want to master it, since you say it's one of the appeals of the sequels. We always played like this when we were kids. And each zone was very fun to go through, even Labyrinth Zone. 😁 The levels don't need to be built around speed because the gameplay itself offers a lot of possibilities, not just the momentum but also the fact you can roll. And I don't mean loops, since your reviews seem to focus on them a lot, although I understand the appeal too. In fact levels which use loops too often become boring to me. Starlight and Icecap Zones are fun but not really the most interesting. It's even more fun to speedrun levels which are slow at first glance. This here is definitely one of the main qualities of the early Sonic games.
The final boss is literally a scam the window where you can hit the boss is so small I’m really lucky because I was playing the remastered version because If I was playing the original there is no way I would replay the whole game just to get back to that cheating boss and die again
Is Chemical Plant Zone really that hard? I beat Sonic 2 when it was new and I was like 7-8 (yeah, I'm old) and I don't remember struggling with it at all. Metropolis Zone and Death Egg Zone, sure. But Chemical Plant? Was one of the easier stages for me...
And this is why I hate classic Sonic. I play games once, twice if it's an exception. Your entire video is basically saying "The game is shit, but it gets good when you get used to shit."
I think I am one of the only people that prefers the half pipe special stages over blue spheres. I mean Sonic 2 is one of my favorite games, and yeah 3&K is amazing too, but I fucking hate those blue spheres man. Worse part is they make you do it twice which made me knock it down half a point to a 9.5/10
Sonic 2, I felt the beginning lvls (Emarld Hill, Chemical, Hill Top, Aquatic Ruin) are S n A tier lvls until it went downhill with the ending lvls. Oil Ocean wasn't hard for me (Anymore), it's just boring to get through with the oil trail, cannon, stairs, etc shit that slows Sonic down. Metropolis zone can go f itself, especially with those suprise crabs, grasshopper enemies, starfish bots, n etc bullcrap moments from that lvl. Sky chase, I didn't like the flight scene but I agree that the platforming section was pretty cool once u learn how to get through the lvl faster. Still Sky chase as a whole is mid. And for the final bosses, is still cool on Sega/Sonic Team for giving the player a tension moment when dealing Metal n Death Egg Robot. Sonic 2 as a whole is a solid 7.5 out of 10 imo (Also agree, Sonic 2 special stages is just Satan's stages, especially with Tails help)
Zelda Majora's Mask be like(While many people hate it, the most used and overused argument for why it's "bad" is the asset-reuse and clock, which sorta implies it is hard to argue that it's objectively bad)
Okay so i see What you trying to say but honelsty you Said This in a bad Way. What you trying to say is “When you first play it, It fun but you get punished a lot for not doing Well, but the more you play the better you get” But here it feels like “When you first play it it freaking awful but you Can get used to it” And in that Way saying that, That means it objectivley bad. Which is not What the game is!
My experience with the game is that I don't really like the game. No offence, but I'd actually rather play Sonic 1 after I understand that game a bit better(Which Sonic Genesis GBA practically forced me to when I played through that for the memes, lol). And whatever improvement this game made is pretty much made obsolete by Sonic 3 being the almost perfect Classic Sonic-experience for me.
I never really had an issue with Sonic 2s special stages. Sonic 3s blue spheres special stages were the best but 2s halfpipe special stages weren't too bad IMO, they just require a fuck ton of memorization. I had trouble with them when I was a kid but now I can run through all 7 stages with mostly no issues, even with Tails on. I'm still no good at Sonic 1s special stages and to me they are the worst in the trilogy. The trippy assed background with the gems into fish, awkward controlling and depressing music, ugh I still hate those stages so much.
Some of the later Sonic 2 special stages suffer from some poor design(which is super bad when they are the stages where getting hit once can sometimes already yeet you out of the emerald), but the gameplay itself was always very fun to me. But yeah, Sonic 1 special stages are pretty bad, I seriously wonder how people even deal with it. Sonic 4 changes it back to the Sonic 1-prototype controls where the player manually rotates the stages and while many hate it, it completely fixes that type of special stage for me.
I disagree with the whole idea that you need to play Sonic games more than once to get the best experience. Because with that logic your basically saying that you need to play the game incorrectly first than you can go fast. Just my opinion of course.
Well, it depends. There are a couple of other games that really only open up what they have to offer upon playing them more than once.(Like how Shadow just eventually clicked with me and it changed my life forever...okay, maybe I am a bit overdramatic here)
No, I Will say This. He does a bad job explaning Those elements. Basically Sonic games are made to be played over and over again to be better at the game. It gives kinda sense since Sonic 2 is a 45 min Long game and made to be replayed Many times. You Will die a lot as a first time player but that because you dont know the level very Well. I rerember Final rush from SA2 to be a giant pain in the ass, but now i Will say i have mastered the level.
sonic 2 is the better game compared to sonic 1 if you asked me which is better sonic 2 wins everytime it's not even a competition and I agree the sonic 2 special stages are a miserable experience I have only gotten super sonic though cheats I have never gotten it legitimately I personally prefer the sonic 1 special stages because there slightly more bearable but personality sonic 2 is better than sonic 1 Edit: also today I finally got all the chaos emeralds on the mobile port twice once for sonic and once for tails and It was miserable. Sonic 2 is WAY better than Sonic 1. But Sonic 2 is not better than Sonic Forces which I rank it in A. Matt if U see this comment I have a guilty pleasure with Sonic Forces.
It's honestly so impressive how sonic in it's original days consistently improved on it's predecessor, wish that was the case nowadays

Sonic Frontiers as a MAJOR upgrade and rework of the open world style of Sonic 06: *COUGH am i a joke to you?*

It’s crazy how many improvements there are in this game
- Better Level Design
- Super Sonic
- Spin Dash
- Tails
- 2P Versus

It makes the game very fun
The only problem with tails is him in the special stage
Tails is a setback for the stages and can and will screw you over

I beat Sonic 2 when it was new and I was like 7-8 (yeah, I'm old) and I don't remember struggling with it at all. Metropolis Zone and Death Egg Zone, sure. But Chemical Plant? Was one of the easier stages for me...
In What year did you play the game?
What happened to that Sonic CD review? Been looking forward to seeing more reviews from you but idk maybe other viewers don't feel the same
16 emeralds in sonic 3? Sorry what
And this is why I hate classic Sonic.
Worse part is they make you do it twice which made me knock it down half a point to a 9.5/10
I guess not a lot of people know this but tails can be used to fly by latching on to him
That wasn't the case in the original game
Should I try sonic unleashed
Sorry but metropolis zone will never be a good zone, even as a experienced player I can say this zone is garbage
Agreed but I still prefer it over labyrinth zone from Sonic 1.
Agreed but it’s a lot more tolerable with super sonic
@TheGreenThunder that's how I beat this zone actually, though act 3 was the worst to get through even as super sonic
@Lynx Fresh yeah labyrinth zone actually made me rage especially at the eggman chase at the end of act 3
@@gokublack9724 oh yeah act 3 is garbage
Yay
What bugs me the most about this game is how tails goes behind Sonic and you can’t see his sprite 😠 thankfully they fixed that in 3
And they fixed it in the Mobile versions also thankfully
i relly liked this vid
And people say rushed games are bad .....
Zelda Majora's Mask be like(While many people hate it, the most used and overused argument for why it's "bad" is the asset-reuse and clock, which sorta implies it is hard to argue that it's objectively bad)
I personally like sonic 2 more than sonic 3 and knux. Mostly cause it's less of a commitment to play through
It's my favourite Sonic game. Sorry 3 & K
Unpopular opinion: Sonic 1 special stages are harder than Sonic 2
I agree
still waiting for sonic cd review...
It's coming very soon, it'll be worth it.
@@Matthasnocuts it will be worth it if its you, love the content
Sonic 2
15:59 16 emeralds eh
Yeah 💀
Bad taste, Sonic 2 is zero painfull to play unlike 1
@@juanguillermosaldano2386 Yeah, nah. The only barrier of pain in Sonic 1 is the labyrinth zone boss.
Sonic 4 changes it back to the Sonic 1-prototype controls where the player manually rotates the stages and while many hate it, it completely fixes that type of special stage for me.
this is my least favourite classic sonic game
Why?
14:14 eh sonic would have survived anyway lmao
Sonic 2 99 percent one bad cuz hyper sonic did not appear in level 1
sonic 2 is the better game compared to sonic 1 if you asked me which is better sonic 2 wins everytime it's not even a competition and I agree the sonic 2 special stages are a miserable experience I have only gotten super sonic though cheats I have never gotten it legitimately I personally prefer the sonic 1 special stages because there slightly more bearable but personality sonic 2 is better than sonic 1
Edit: also today I finally got all the chaos emeralds on the mobile port twice once for sonic and once for tails and It was miserable. Monday 01/29/2024
Sonic 2 is WAY better than Sonic 1. But Sonic 2 is not better than Sonic Forces which I rank it in A. Matt if U see this comment I have a guilty pleasure with Sonic Forces.
Sonic heroes is good
Hi second!!
