  • Sailing to Puerto Rico took a lot of weather watching and planning but we did it. Thank you Audible for sponsoring this video! Get your first audiobook and two Audible originals free when you try Audible for 30 days visit www.audible.co... or text "Tula" to 500 500! Sailing to Puerto Rico can be pretty easy, if you are coming from the East, maybe even the North or South but coming from the West is the wrong way if you consider all the other directions... However, our wait for a great weather window worked out so well because when we crossed the Mona Passage and sailed to Puerto Rico it was probably the flattest Mona Passage passage possible! Also, once we tacked off the Dominican Republic we were able to sail pretty much the whole entire way which was absolutely awesome after all the monitoring we have been doing along the Dominican Republic Coast.

    Hey Billy and Sierra, just wanted to say I love your videos! I'm catching up and just finished watching this one. Billy I'm glad to hear you're listening to Sailing Alone Around the World (you're probably done by now). It's the book that inspired my dad to build a "Spray" in Hawaii in the 1970's with my mother. They sailed it across the pacific to the west coast and then south through the Panama canal. I'm not exactly sure where they explored before they docked in Port Charlotte where I was born. They sold the boat there and fortunately my parents were good about keeping in touch with the future owners and now the boat is in England! My sister and I hope to get it back someday! You guys are having the time of your lives out there!

    Excellent content as usual!
    That deep water near Puerto Rico is known for the submarine trenches. During the Cold War USN subs would frequent the area.
    There used to be a naval base in Puerto Rico called Roosevelt Roads however it was closed in the early 1990's.
    The island of Vieques was a US Navy bombing range since WWII but it was also shuttered in the 90's. They're still cleaning up unexploded ordnance.

  • @williamdgurley421
    @williamdgurley421 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tula, I did this passage Feb 2018 on a yacht delivery, Georgetown Exuma to Marina Pescaderia. 42 ft Beneteau. Very uncomfortable upwind 25-30 knots motor sailing. We tore the mainsail and needed fuel. We also then went into Oceanworld. What a strange place, dolphin show and casino. were also impressed with the sailmaker, but the DR Navy held us against our will for 5 days.Their rule was that a 42 ft sailboat is a "small craft" , so we could not get our despacio until their Comandante removed the small craft warning. We had to stay there for Valentines day. Listened to the dolphin show ( Telemundo style), 3 times a day for 5 days. Then they released us but would not deliver the despacio. My Captain left without out it and they pursued us with arms drawn on the Navy PT style boat . Chased us out past 2 miles and forced us back in. Probably their biggest naval drill of the year. I also noted those crazy floats with flags in deep water, probably long lines.
    Now it's fun to relate my tale, but at the time we thought we were going to a DR jail. We did luck out like you with a smooth Mona passage weather window. It was that window that pressured the decision to try to escape.
    It was really nice seeing your trip. You made better choices with less delivery schedule pressure than we did.
    Fair winds and keep up the good posts.

(ex. how far behind the boat do you run your lure, how deep and what type of lure and line do you use). I have 2 excellent boat rods that i use for deep sea fishing but not sure of the particulars. thx in advance. Have fun, be safe and KEEP ON SAILIN ON! cheers RJ

    • @Tulasendlesssummer
      @Tulasendlesssummer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha I think you’re asking the wrong people RJ! We’re pretty bad at fishing! We just use squid skirts and chuggers as our lures and our line is just regular 50 pound test mono. We’ll probably look into upgrading at some point... hopefully! We always try to to troll when we’re in over 100 ft of water and cross our fingers 😂

    You guys need a walking stick/staff to fend off unfriendly dogs that might pose a threat to jetty. A small, keychain size bottle of deterrent would also help if the need ever arose. Another failsafe method, and this is not a joke, is to poke the butt, with you index finger, of an aggressive dog that has a hold of another and won't let go. That's right, poke a fighting dog in the ass with your finger. It works like magic. I've seen pits release instantly in videos. I have a 135 lb american bulldog that my 30 lb westie mix occasionally starts fights with. It's worked 4 out of 4 times so far, but does require a rather enthusiastic hand washing afterwards. Both dogs are female and jealous...go figure.

    What do you use to patch a rip in your sails? Bought some sail patch tape online and it was junk.

    • @Tulasendlesssummer
      @Tulasendlesssummer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luckily we haven’t had to repair anything major (knock on wood), but we did get repair tape that came with our sails and we’ve only had to use that for very small repairs. For bigger repair jobs we’d probably sew it
