WE CAUGHT A MAHI! On Our Sail To Eleuthera!

- We set sail for Eleuthera which is over some deep deep blue water loaded with pelagic fish like Mahi-Mahi (aka Dolphin or Dorado). We always try to troll a lure or two behind our sailboat just in case we get lucky enough to sail by some dinner. Our luck was with us this day and we caught a huge Mahi Mahi! We had an amazing sail straight to the North end of Eleuthera and anchored up on the bank where Sierra filleted up our catch for dinner!

We had some cheap vodka onboard that we used to kill the Mahi. It's less bloody and some may say more humane. We do it sometimes mostly because it's less bloody and our boat is also our home so it's less of a mess for us to clean up and less of a chance of flies finding us quickly
The fish died!! You don't think it deserved a top shelf vodka?
I'm shocked. “Vodka (or any other spirits) splashed a few drops from a squirt bottle into the gill slits (will settle a fish),” says Florida Sportsman member Frisbee. “The gills absorb such a high concentration in a short time that the heart stops when the vodka blood pumps into it.”
Wow. I did not know those!
So good to hear others are euthanizing fish, instead of letting them suffocate to death. A better way to do it would be just blunt force to the head.
@@longbord1 Would definitely make an interesting episode. The "meta" questions about fishing. Ecological sustainability, what is legally allowed where, what catch rates you could top out at for eating in what regions (fish maps?), poisons like mercury in different sorts of fish and health risks and how to kill fish painlessly. That's what interests me when considering this lifestyle.
That young lady is a keeper Billy,,,,,she sails,,,she fishes,,,,,she loves the ocean,,,,she has a wonderfully kind heart,,,,and she cleans the fish,,,,,!!!!
You are both so fortunate to have each other,,,,,all the best to you both
Howdy. A little recommendation from a lot of years of fishing in the Atlantic. When you find a place where you think you might catch a fish like a ledge or structure, slow down to 6 knots or below temporarily for an hour for trowling. I like the range of 3-6 knots. High speed will result in reducing catches to high speed fish like barracuda. Two other hints, fish are like people and like to eat like people. When the sun comes up, they are hungry from hiding all night. In the afternoon, they like to relax and eating is not a priority. Unless, there is a front coming in. The bigger the front the better. Fish know and get ready for hanging out away from the top. The get ready by eating as much as they can just before the front arrives. I have had great luck just as I am getting wet from rain. Then, when the front is here, no fish. On the back side of a front, don't bother putting the lines in the water. That clear calm beautiful flat water is full of fish that have no interest in biting. Wish you much luck!
It’s just so refreshing and relaxing to watch your videos. Lots of blue and green and yellow colors everywhere. The water, the sky, the boat, your clothes...the fish lol. Your sailing skills have improved much. Thanks for taking us along.
Music and drone shots in the intro are awesome ! 🤙🏻 bravo ⚓️
The Guitar track at the beginning just set the mood for a great video! Live the dream!
Good video! I like the bluesy audio from the island footage. I wish someone would explain the alcohol in the fish gills thing. I've seen other cruisers do it and I'm completely lost on that practice. I'm in NC and we have always pierced the gills and cut straight through the bottom to bleed some fish out and maybe cut around the tail also. Mostly, we just throw 'em on ice in a cooler. Nice footage of the scenery and the drone. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us!
Doing some catch up 👍
What a HUGE Mahi! Gives a whole new meaning to 'fresh catch of the day'! Yum 😋
Really was a beautiful sail ....love seeing the water change to turquoise .... means pretty beaches can't be far away 🌴
Hey billy I see something red on your back deck looks like Sierra won it says Honda On it.
Sierra- my Husband and I reckon you are a filleting legend! 😎 Just a machine!! Great team work bringing that beautiful dinner aboard! Bravo 👏🏾
Mice fish and them acorn squash are gteat with butter cinnamon and a bit of clove in them wjen you bake them yummo
that's pretty much what we do! We throw a little maple Syrup or honey in there as well but have never added clove. We have to try that one!
Got to tell you... of all the fish we caught during our 5-years cruising the Bahamas, the best by far was Barracuda. Yes, you have to watch the length/size (under 30-inches) for Ciguatera. But the flavor (barbecued after marinating for an hour or two) was incredible. Go for it! Love your videos.
Awesome video as always!!! Music is totally on point!!! Enjoy the summer
I love you guys! I’ve been binge watching for a few weeks and now I’m all caught up! Keep’em coming!
Loving the blues riffs! And Eleuthera! My gosh so breath taking!
Great music at the beginning of the video would like to get back to how much speed did you gain by doing all those fixer upper to your boat?
We all love tula's Endless Summer and the boat is looking fabulous since you redid her and that was a beautiful fish love catching nose and eating them great eating one of my favorite all-time fish say I want to let you guys know one of my favorite TH-cam channels for homesteading arms family Homestead I was talking about you all the other day and a video and they watch you I thought that was pretty cool so I think maybe you should give them a watch and maybe some of your viewers were like them and subscribe to their Channel just likes their viewers are probably watching you now even though I was watching you for a long time pretty cool one TH-cam to another that's a cool way to do it so you're a subscriber list up keep up the great work Fairwinds

WOW...That first 54 seconds was unbelievable!

Perfect day, perfect sail, perfect dinner... how does life get better.
What did pour in the fish and why. You guys and lucking. I am at work in a factory.
You guys are getting better at fishing everyday
Great footage! Love following you guys!
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing your travels😊
Great video as usual even though the notification woke me up. Believe me, with quality content like you post, I am NOT complaining. I can't wait to be out there doing it myself.
Nice catch! We've been loving the fishing in the Bahamas so far. Caught a great Blackfin Tuna yesterday and made some wonderful sushi for dinner 😊
Jetty is such a star boat dog, she certainly knows the ropes bless her little heart. Xxx
living the best life
Finally , fish on. Nice mahi
You guys have got the boat sooo dialed in. Awesome!!
Awesome!
Save the mahi belly! Makes good fresh bait!
Cool shots great weather smooth sailing and catching fish. No better days than that. Oh yeah each other. Fair winds
Awesome videos guys! You guys are always welcome to the Marianas islands(USA)🤙
Siiiick intro!!
Jetty is the luckiest pup ever.
I enjoyed your music today! Thank you
We had Mahi Mahi for dinner tonight. Love that fish.
You Beauties!! Look atcha, already almost up to 100K viewers! Woo-hoo! And well deserved too, every one of them! ❤️
Teasing us poor folks living far from the sea about how good fresh seafood is. At least here in Michigan we can fish in the Great Lakes at least. Not as good as the Caribbean but close. Have a great time, love watching you.
Mmh, very good, the Mahi ...
Raw Elements is the balm. Nice to wake up on a Sunday morning to a Tulas video, nice way to start my day. Hey almost 100 K .What will you do to celebrate?
Good question! Any ideas??
@@Tulasendlesssummer I think something simple like just record the 3 of you watching the counter as it hits 100,000 . Billy and Sierra have a shot of something and Jetty has a celebratory biscuit or favorite treat . It would fun for us to be able to celebrate it with you all.
Winner winner Mahi Mahi dinner ! Keep up the great stuff guys
Great video guys, you inspire.
Any reason you can’t heave to when a fish is on?
Love your videos!
Best boat dog.
What a sunset! And great catch !!
Now that you been sailing for a good period of time , what do you like better motoring or sailing?
Nothing works better than the Mantus. 8-)
It's a great anchor!
Yall are great
Great video as always you Three! Now you need to get a fighting belt so the reel stays level as you wind it and it will make life much easier! Plus as you know, in the Bahamas the faster you get that fish in the less of a chance the "Tax man" comes and takes your fish! and Pre congrats on 100k subs! Keep doing what you do!
My favorite shot is the one that is facing the bow and the cat Hull is slicing through the water.
If you're trolling and you're going over 6 knots you're inclined to catch a lot of barracuda obviously you're not going to eat them because of ciguatera.
You can slow yourself down with a sea anchor or a 5-gallon bucket attached to a rope because you really want to be going 4-5 Knot's and you'll pick up some additional fish.
At any rate you both have improved mightily since this time last year which is a good thing. I also want to add that you should be sharpening your hooks so that you don't lose anything ounce you to have it hooked.
Excellent content as per usual your videos are nice because you don't have to do a lot of talking and understand exactly what you're trying to get across.
You must be getting close to Dominican Republic by now.
I love that shot too. and the water coming off the transom! Thanks for the fishing advice. Maybe we can catch a wahoo at our speeds?
Nice vid.. otw to 100k sub.. been subcribe when only few thousand.. keep it up..
Great stuff party peeps..... #OfTheEpic
Awesome video, thanks for the ride!
Boats lookin real good guys!!! You should do a tour video on all the things you’ve done to her and a before and after video! Pics and vids when you bought her and one of the present 🎁..... lol
Rayvonne SR Yeah! Great idea. I’d also like to hear Billy & Sierra’s take on which type of boat they now prefer - sailing yacht or motor boat??
Definitely!!
That's a nice sized mahi!!
love you guys another great video like the beginning segment
Nicely done. In the 1980’s went to Windsor Island off Eleuthera . It was the off season and all I did was drink, and watch thousands of pink crabs scuttle across the roads.🤯🦄
Awsome video you guys are amazing
great video.. thanks !!
Love to see your video content is really quality dont see that much like sail boat videos like yours
Super awesome video!
Well it should be your lucky fishing shirt now bud. 💯💯
Come teach us your ways you two!!
Barracuda, one of the best fish to eat, just keep the small ones,
Why the alcohol?
Tank you vidéo magnifique super
I was your 458 subscriber, look at you now, almost 100K, that's pretty cool ...
Oh man you were with us from the very beginning!! Where we still on Tula?? Thanks for sticking along with us this whole time!!
@@Tulasendlesssummer No, thank you, very entertaining channel.....
Another great one
Did you guys get a new camera great clarity
i asked that a few videos ago, no reply though
cannon g7x is what they use now, not sure of what they used to use or when the change of camera occured.
We have been using a canon G7X for almost a year. Definitely better picture quality and nice to use in most aspects.
@@Tulasendlesssummer thanks for replying
Is that the biggest mahi on any sailing vlog? I cant think of a bigger catch!
Oh by the way I've never seen nobody kill a fish like that using cheap vodka that is a very good idea where did you come up with that at I think that's a great idea we'll have to remember that
Immediate bleeding gives best blood draining and quality. Single cut method: Cutting the artery from the heart to the gills, but not the two arteries from the gills
Double cut method: Cutting both the arteries from the gills, but not the artery from the heart to the gills
Throat cut (trawler bleeding): Cutting through the throat, right down on both sides
Gill cut: Cutting off all the gill latches on one side. Do it like a fisherman to preserve quality.
Here’s to your upcoming 100k 🍺😎. By the way that is one fine Mahi Mahi!
Thanks Randy!!
It's called a Gimbal belt
Nice Mahi!
We need one haha
Damn guys. I'm pretty jelly 😂.
Have fun, God bless
I agree with billy y'all should have your recipes on your website:) another great video! thanks for sharing.
DONE! tulasendlesssummer.com/category/recipes/ Only have a couple up now but we will keep adding.
I have lucky fishing socks. But I can't get them wet so I never wear them.
Reeling in that big fish wore you guy's out. You need some R&R after that. lol
Awesome video. What kind of bait or lure did the Mahi hit on? We are making our first run to Bimini this week and really want to catch one.
We caught this on a big purple and black chugger. We've had good success on smaller blue and white ones too. Also, a cedar plug never fails.
Thank you
What were they doing with the alcohol? And what kind of alcohol was that?
What kind of flag had you on the old boat? Looked like a kind of Danish one
The old boat? On Adrenaline right now we have an American flag and a Bahamian courtesy flag
@@Tulasendlesssummer Yeah, I saw that you have the flag I meant on your actual boats mast too. It's the Bahamian flag
Nice fish!
So Billy/Sierra have you ever been on an island and you look out and see that your sail boat or the trawler got loose and you had to get in the dingy and go chase it down? how about been sleeping and you realize oh shiat we are moving or dragging anchor? that has to be a bad feeling.
We have dragged in the past and it sucks. We use Siren Marine now so we get alerted as soon as the boat starts moving and we can take action immediately
@@Tulasendlesssummer That's good to know you have something like that to warm you.
Why did you pour alcohol in the gills. For blood? Just curious
Great video. Thanks for sharing🤙 why can you not eat barracuda. In Calif we ate some. Maybe diff. Be safe and happy😍😎🏍🇺🇸🏃🏻♀️🌞
Ciguatera poisoning, Ciguatera is a type of food poisoning. The ciguatera toxin may be found in large reef fish, most commonly barracuda, grouper, red snapper, eel, amberjack, sea bass, and Spanish mackerel. These fish live in coral reef waters between latitudes of 35 degrees south to 35 degrees north, corresponding to the area located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. These geographic lines ring the earth north and south of the equator and make up the tropics. These areas include the Caribbean Sea, Hawaii, and coastal Central America.
Ciguatera toxin tends to accumulate in predator fish, such as the Barracuda and other carnivorous reef fish because they eat other fish that consume toxin-producing algae (dinoflagellates) that live in coral reef waters.
Ciguatera toxin is harmless to fish but poisonous to humans. The toxin is odorless and tasteless, and it is heat-resistant, so cooking does not destroy the toxin. Eating ciguatera-contaminated tropical or subtropical fish poisons the person who eats it.
Almost 100,000 subs! y’all better do a live hundred thousand sub party
I’d be skinny dipping out there.
Nice catch is that the first keeper Goliath mahi ? Also to dispatch a fish either knife quickly in brain or use a billy club (you get it billy club ) hit him three times and that will do the job
Seems editing skills are getting better better and better music enhanced the great content. Sorry for my ignorance but what was the purpose of pouring water into the Mahi's Gills after you caught it?
Hey guys I love your videos your amazing you inspired me to start a you tube channel of my own and is now my passion thanks soo much I love boats and hope on day to sail to the Bahamas to
Right!!!??? Billy and Sierra have rekindled a passion of mine. Sailing. I won't be starting a channel of my own, but my home is for sale and I'm looking for the "perfect" boat to suit my needs as a permanent home.
Thanks so much!! We're glad we can inspire you guys a bit and get you on the water!!
