@@MoukhaSR Eren was currently in a dilemma between choosing to fight for freedom to the bitter end OR forget everything about it and take Mikasa far away and live his remaining four years in peace.
He wanted to confirm if Mikasa liked him “romantically” or not so he can choose to stay with her or cause the rumbling.
To me, it’s weird because Eren never showed *ROMANTIC* interest in Mikasa but could tell she saw him that way. So he wanted to at least make one of them happy. 😂💀

@@MoukhaSR What you just saw was Eren, a guy who believes the future cannot change or take a different course, make one desperate stab at changing something he foresaw, only for Mikasa to let him down. It's exactly the same reason he, in prison, begged Hange to present an alternative. From the moment she refused to be honest with him, he knew things could only play out the way they would. Hence, Rumbling.
I think most people do not get this - Eren is not an idiot and understands completely that Mikasa loves him!
Eren know Mikasa love him. His obsession with his freedom blinded the truth. You can realize it when he had conversation with Zeke about Ackerman.

eren's character is much more complex than that, he never changed. Its in his nature that he was going to start the rumbling, nothing could have changed that. Fun fact he didnt even know he would die before starting the rumbling, he started the rumbling for himself so his friends can live peaceful long lives. I could go extremely in depth in this and explain everything about erens character, but since i dont want to make this very long. but i will say, eren never changed throughout the anime series, he stayed the exact same since birth and although he had many things come in the way his main purpose and goal in life was to start the rumbling. Eren's character has so many small details about it and all of them mean something and have a big impact on the series.

@@Adam-ls5cq I think in general they kinda struggle with some of the softer expressions. He's usually so stoic all the time in the last bit of the series that in moments where he's intended to be more reflective he can look a smidge annoyed
@@MrWanton16 I disagree tbh. the anime did the erens expressions way better. For example, when met with Armin and Mikasa and told them that he hated them, the animators added shading on his face and made it look like he was depressed. The manga didn't have any of that.

You can see the pleading in Eren's eyes. He really loves Mikasa and wants to hear a clear answer from her. It was even more evident in the manga. Mikasa, you should have given him the answer he wanted. Eren was fed up with everything and was ready to drop everything and go.

Daily reminder, that Eren did not start the rumbling becouse he was family-zoned by Mikasa. Rather her expressing her love would have been the only thing that would stop Eren from commiting a mass genocide, but even then it would not result in a happy ending, as the rest of the world would end up killing each other anyway. Eren had to choose, and he had no good option, only a bad one or worse. To become the devil, destroy all life beyond the sea and to give his friends a long and happy life, even if it means forcing them to turn against him? Or to live the rest of his days happily with Mikasa, while letting the world destroy Paradis?

For those who don't get why she said family and not something more;
It's kinda hard, when someone puts you in that spot and you've had those feelings for a long time, it's difficult to say it truly.
He's the guy who saved her, the guy she grew up with and spent a lot of time with. He's put his life on the line to save her while she's done the same for him. She's afraid of giving him the answer they both want because of rejection and nervousness.

Shes also unsure to as the person he's becoming and she doesn't want to burden him with her feelings while he's in the same country that his father grew up in, where his aunt was murdered along with all Eldians who want to be free are imprisoned and enslaved.
Theyre both still growing up and adjusting to the outside world here, Mikasa does have those feelings for him, and so does Eren, but she's always been a very nervous character when speaking to him.

In this scene where Eren asks Mikasa about what she thinks of him has two different routes.
1)When Mikasa replied that she thought of him as "family" Eren moves forward with his Rumbling plan and this is the main timeline that we're experiencing.
2) The 2nd timeline is when Mikasa replies to Eren that she likes him. That's when Eren couldn't hold back any longer. Both of them had crushes on one another. So Eren and Mikasa runs off together leaving their comrades behind. In that timeline, Eren and Mikasa lived in a small hut happily until Eren passes away from Ymir's curse. But before that happened, Eren mentions that Historia was going through hell and Marley and the Entire world would be soon attacking Paradis. And without the Founder they're pretty much doomed. So Eren just planned to live with Mikasa until that happens. And right when Eren dies, Eren basically wakes up in Episode 1 of Season 1 as a kid. That's why he told Mikasa that she has long hair when in reality Eren just experienced another timeline with Short Haired Mikasa. But he doesn't remember everything. Mikasa in the 2nd last episode also remembers and then some events happen that leads to the Ending of AoT.

There would be a time paradox because Eren never go with Zeke in the paths if he chose to run away with Mikasa, which allows him to talk to his father.

It’s sad bc you can tell Eren empathizes with both the middle eastern refugees (“they’re just like us…”) and the Marleyan civilians (“so these are the people across the ocean”) yet he’s either trapped by fate caused by his visions of the future and/or feels the rumbling is the only way to save his friends. He’s become a genocidal monster and the worst person in the world, yes, but Eren knows how terrible his actions will be. He doesn’t hate the majority of his victims

Normally I hate it when in anime the guy shows no interest in the girl whatsoever and then suddenly in the very end it's like "I've always loved you" but this anime is somehow different. Perhaps it is due to the tragedy and survival theme, but somehow I feel that it is slowly becoming clear that she is the one who first comes to his mind whenever he thinks about his friends or people he wants to protect. I still don't quite understand it but I know that he loves her. This is amazing.
You captured how Eren's characteristic develops perfectly well. Most of the people who watches AoT through 'Memes' or 'Reddit' thinks that Eren is a gigachad who don't care much about what happened after he decided on becoming the villain to commit the rambling. But he actually does care a lot about his loved ones to the point that he decided to do the one thing that he knows well it is unforgivable and can't be undone. They are the only reason he did it. And he was still, in fact, the crybaby self-centered tatakai kid deep down. But he just hid it very well as he grew to know the truth of this world. And he started to see things more clearly than before. Why he always rejected Mikasa whenever she came to protect him. That's because he doesn't want to feel like a powerless, weakling, boy with no choice but to rely on his friends. Only to discover that all Mikasa did back then and still do now it's because she loves and cares about him as he matures.
That's why he asked this question. And that's why he's disappointed but not surprised by her answer here.
You are both very right. Eren has always openly demonstrated over the course of 3 seasons that he can do anything for his friends. But they called Eren a cry baby and a brat. Eren is now depressed and trying to hide all his feelings. Chad Eren is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard. There are a lot of Floch in this fandom. They wanted to turn Eren into a monster because of their personal desires. He will destroy the whole world, he will even kill his friends. Then go and have a child with Historia. Welcome to disney movie LOL... They didn't even really like Eren. But Isayama finally gave the message he wanted to convey. For someone to become a god or a devil, it was enough for someone to believe. But Isayama chose to make Eren human in the end. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my life for a 19-year-old teenager to cry and confess his regrets and wishes. He's just human and that's what makes him the most complex character. If people broke the mold, they would like this ending.

Honestly I feel bad for both of them. Eren wanted Mikasa to tell him she loved him, so that he wouldn’t go through with the rumbling plan, but Mikasa wasn’t able to give him the answer he wanted. It’s obvious by her reaction that she wanted to say ‘I love you’, but that wasn’t an easy thing to say. For Mikasa has aways expressed her feelings for Eren throughout the seasons, but Eren always brushed them aside, everyone got to know about her feelings, but Eren just never paid attention, now he suddenly ups and asks her what he is to her, Mikasa was obviously caught off guard and couldn’t say what she wanted to. These two are the perfect example of ‘star-crossed lovers’ 💔
Adding on to this even tho she's in love with him way before he reciprocates, she's also just content with being by his side. That's why she only ever directly acts on her feelings when she thinks they are about to die. Just being with him is enough to make her happy. If they were able to confess earlier things prolly go very differently.

Eren would still die, either by the hands of Marley or by the Titan curse, and once he dies pardis would be destroyed by Marley. There was no happy ending for them to begin with, but that doesn’t make this scene any less sad.
@@yanhenghuang1017 I believe his feelings being requited would be his excuse to be selfish. To abandon everything, even if it weighed on his conscious, because he'd have some semblance of happiness he craved (even if short lived) and because he wouldn't have to become a monster.
At least that's my interpretation.
This is basically the moment Eren realizes he cannot change the Rumbling. He is a slave to fulfilling destiny, though he desperately wanted Mikasa to say something different - literally anything other than what she said would have made him realize that things *are* in his control. That the Rumbling *isn’t* the only outcome and in fact a *choice* in the end. It’s so heartbreaking to see how depressed he looks - he knows what happens to Ramzi, and he’s responsible for it. And, like clockwork, Mikasa comes running to ask where he has been. He asks her the question, she stutters, meekly replies “Family,” and the gang show up. It’s all “perfect timing” because this kid literally saw how everything was going to end. Every moment after was him continuing to play the part, just a cog in the machine. Eren is literally one of the best fucking characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of analyzing.

Just finished the final part of anime, left scars in my heart 😢 The best anime that has the most realistic timeline and story, and every moment matters to what is concluded in the end.

The way they did the whole scene here felt much more impactful than the ending. Adding Call of Silence to Eren’s question couldn’t have been a more perfect choice of ost here.
Yeah man s4 overall was very bad at picking OSTs for the right time but this was just perfect.

a point lot of people miss is that eren isnt clueless. he knows mikasa loves him, but still asks her in order for her to decide for herself what eren is to her. Based on her choice, eren tells her that he always hated her which isnt true, but its to further push her to not get attached to him.

Yeah. It’s hard to properly answer when you’re put on the spot like that. Plus Mikasa didn’t know that Eren’s final decision was depending on her answer. She probably thought she had more time with him to find the right moment to tell him her feelings.
It's not like the fate of the world depends on it.
How can just some pixels, voiceovers, and an highly emotional plot make you feel things you haven't felt before? I am amazed. I finished the manga last year and still can't get myself to face the reality of this show. I cried so much and I still cry. This show fiddles with my heart strings like none other.

I just realized when Eren told Mikasa he hated her a while back in the season he was talking about himself. He was telling her she was a slave with no free will and he hates nothing more than those with no freedom. Eren sees the past, present and future all at once. He's like the character Dr. Manhattan, he has godlike power but at the cost of his free will. Eren and the other attack titans have always moved forward yearning for freedom, and they don't have a choice. It's a paradox even, the very ability that pushes them forward for freedom is what locks them away from ever being free.
That nothing yet comment thoe. My first time watching this I didn’t realize the reason Erin is crying isn’t just because he relates to the struggle of these people, but also because he knows he is going to kill them.
Somebody with a brain is watching the anime (I'm not joking, most people here think that Eren got blueballed to commit the Rumbling)

The alternate timeline where they run off to live at the cabin started at this moment when Mikasa says she loves him instead of just saying he's family. Later during the rumbling in the instant before she kills him, Eren uses his powers to unlock her memory of that timeline and that's why she kisses his head.

Question as someone who saw the manga only: Was that after the "Apologize To Ramzi" scene? Asking since it seems the anime adapted parts of 123 and 130-131, but didn't include other iconic parts.
Damn what a day for eren he literally felt emotionless the whole trip bc he seen the future of him destroying all of Liberio ,he was so excited to go out the walls as a kid but as he grew up life changed him a lot tragically. Him seeing the camp full of ppl who lost their freedom just like him,it really made him second guess the rumbling,it’s sad how he even tried to test the future by seeing if mikasa would say her true feelings in the end of it all eren knew that you can’t stop fate....

1:15-1:31 is one of the most important moments of the series. And upon rewatch you see that Eren is looking at Mikasa’s lips/mouth. He’s trying to see if she says something different than what he’s seen millions of times. He looks desperate for another answer. And then when the Turkish guy shows up Eren looks extremely disappointed. Everything is inevitable. Eren just hoped that Mikasa could’ve said something different that would sway his path.
Eren took that as a rejection mate.
Damn it Mikasa....That being said though, even if she had told Eren how she felt, it wouldn't have changed how Eren felt about the rest of the world.....And Eren knows deep down how she really feels. She loves the guy.

He looks her straight in the eyes, expecting an answer. And I honestly think he didn’t get the answer he wanted. Because even after her answer, he stares at her intently until they’re interrupted.
