@@oscarinacan Mrs Doubtfire was my introduction to him too, but I definitely recommend falling down the rabbit hole of his interviews! The man's just incredibly captivating. A great place to start is his 1983 interview with Barbara Walters - while her questions about gay people aren't going to teach you anything these days, there's a gentle but fearless authenticity to his responses that I think still resonates and feels enriching regardless of your sexuality.
Really he is. I look for all his interviews bc he has so much charisma and is such a funny human being and comes across like he could care less for the superficialness the world has been in lately
This is what I love about Seth’s show. He brings on all types of people, not just who is “trendy.” I love seeing all sorts of people, maybe people i haven’t seen in years but love.
Wow, never realized what a truly sentimental, honest, lovely human Harvey Fierstein is until this interview!! The part (about 3 &1/2 mins in) about keeping his childhood friend from kindergarten really got me! Loved him in so many roles before, but this brought it home in a big way, he's a truly sweet, amazing man!!👏🏼💓✌🏼
Years back when Seattle Men's Chorus was rehearsing in the basement of First United Methodist Church I suddenly heard the basses screaming like schoolgirls, " It's Harvey! It's Harvey!" Harvey stepped up next to the director on the podium and said, " I thought I'd come by and say hi. I'm in town for previews and I know you all are fans."
Not just an important stage and movie personality he was one of the visible faces of gay liberation in the 70s. His interviews were so dignified yet funny and personable at that time he was amazing and even Barbara Walters seemed intelligent in his company.
As a young gay man in the early '80s, seeing Torch Song Trilogy on stage in Sydney had a profoundly "normalising" effect for my self acceptance. While clearly quintessentially gay, Jewish, New York, the issues the plays dealt with were brilliantly universal and struck many chords with this young, gay Australian. Fierstein may be an American, and international, icon of stage and screen however, for me, first and foremost, he will always be a gay icon as an early "out and proud" leader in the broader community for us.
I've adored Harvey Fierstein since "Torch song Trilogy". The kitchen all decorated with little pink bunnies and matching slippers was like he gave a warm hug. Great movie with Mathew Broderick. Why can't we just see him on TV?
Remains one of my favourite pieces of theatre to this day. One of those rare pieces of writing that so skilfully combined side splitting humour with devastating drama. Deserves a revival I reckon, would love to see it on stage again! 😊

I gasped and clapped like an excited kid when Seth brought up “Cicada, Cicada.” I do NOT do that lmao. The audience felt like a fitting part of the production - the repeated baffling behavior and callouts ACROSS segments - instead of like confusing people who are mostly there to applaud for themselves (??). We got self-referential bits and production commentary, which always adds to the show-about-a-show feel. The monologue was on point and Seth’s pig day improv had me rolling, the McRib sketch nailed the kind of goofy edge that defines the show, and the SCOTUS sketch highlighted what makes LNSM special among late-night shows (and I loved the addition to the Scollins is a Scumbag Late Night lore). We got accents, Seth breaking, political digs (to fill the Closer Look gap), NYC talk and delightful 8G banter. We got interviews from film, Broadway and print, with broad variety in topic and tone. I laughed out loud repeatedly (v unusual when I’m alone) and got to end the night on a calm and hopeful note. The quality of this episode was actually ridiculous?? Wtf (Also, *I* liked the universal healthcare joke.)
@@jozz2248 if it helps at all, the run of show is generally monologue, a closer look (MWTh) or sketch (Tues), interviews #1/#2 (big names, entertainment, politics), sometimes sketch #2 like in this episode, interview #3 (literature, art, etc), then a musical guest if there is one (often on Wednesdays)
What a wonderful interview! I am not familiar with Harvey Fierstein, but now I adore him. So glad he will be involved in "Cicada, Cicada"! It is going to be epic.
He’s done many things, but one of the most well known is Torch Song Trilogy. He wrote the plays that he then adapted into the film. He also acted in the film.

OMG Harvey Fierstein still looks great. The first time I heard of him was in 1988 when I saw the movie "Torch Song Trilogy" I had just gotten out of the U.S. Marines and was still in the closet.

Exactly the word I came here to say--and made even more delightful by the pure joy on Seth's face throughout this interview.
Absolutely! I’d love to be one of his close buddies
The only problem I had with Mrs. Doubtfire was that there weren't MORE scenes with Harvey and Robin Williams. Comedy gold.
