    I started ballet at 49. (4 years ago) Best thing I've ever done. The classes have given me a chance to do something that I regret not starting 40 years ago. Not only am I gaining confidence in class, but I also find I'm more confident in my day to day life. I thought that I'd get a lot of jokes made at my expense, but generally most people seem quite supportive and surprised that a man of my age (and size😲😟) has started ballet. If anyone out there is thinking about starting an adult class, just go for it. You meet up with some fantastic friends. And any nervousness quickly vanishes.

    Just started ballet at 26. I love it, it just makes me sad because I wish I was someone who started when I was 6 or 7 years old. Fortunately I do a lot of yoga so I am good shape going into class. I want to put in an hour per day and see where I can go. Thank you for the video.

      Update: so I have been doing ballet for a little over a year and a half (27 now closer to 28). I have gotten a lot better but still have a long way to go. Couple things that I have done that helped me out a lot. One is to stretch every day (outside of class). Work on your splits and straddle. Progress is painfully slow loosening up my hips but I am seeing results and this appears to be the only real way to get better (class by itself is not enough for me). Another thing is to learn as much as possible about ballet. I went through and watched a lot of classical ballet performances on TH-cam and have also seen some live performances since my original comment. I study on Quizlet to learn ballet vocab terms. I am surprised how learning about ballet and vocab terms has made me a better dancer. Finally workout. A lot. Really no silver bullet. Class is essential obviously, but to build strength and reinforce technique I think the ballet workouts I do outside of class are more important (class is for getting feedback and learning new things).

    Things people wear in my ballet class: an occasional leotard, a lot of different t-shirts, or tank tops, sports tights, tights with a skirt, tights with shorts, just shorts. Some people have ballet shoes, some people just wear socks. Basically if your clothes aren't so baggy the teacher can't properly see what your body is doing anymore, you're good.

    This is insightful. I started taking adult ballet classes 6 months ago because why not: I went in knowing that it was going to be challenging and I wanted to learn. I remember not really knowing what to expect and feeling the nerves and I wish I had this piece of knowledge. Everything you mentioned in the video has been my experience so far. :) Definitely helps if your studio and teacher create an environment that you're comfortable in.

    THANK YOU for this video - I have been thinking of ballet just in general. I am still unsure if my flat feet will get worse in ballet, or better (due to the strengthening exercises). I trained in ballet for a couple years as a child, and I went to a very prestigious (and expensive) ballet school, with a strict and experienced french ballet teacher. My mother pulled me and my sister out becuase she was a single mom and couldn't afford it anymore. I still have very fond memories of my dance school. Now as an adult, I don't have any regular exercise, and I've been considering different types of dance to help with my posture and my leg and foot strength. - Danielle - Chapel Hill, NC

    Try not to sit or lean on the bar while others are doing the exercise, even if you are really tired (unless you have to for some reason), it is considered incorrect posture and most teachers (at least the ones I had) really don't like it. :)

      It depends on your level and the level of the dance team you are trying out for, but I have seen a lot of people around your age train for drill team and do very well. I might recommend trying to add in a leaps and turns class as well for additional technique. A year of consistent classes will do a lot to help you achieve your goal!

How would that work would I have to wear some kind of leotard and pink tights or would they have something else I am allowed to wear or how’s that work? What should I expect not knowing nothing and joining a teen class? I also don’t know French and may take me a few times to understand something and I know the teacher doesn’t pryie have the time to help 2 or 3 times with other students that are a little quicker and are paying for her time too. Hate to be more of a bother than good!! Please Help!!

    • @TheHorsemadperson
      @TheHorsemadperson 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      they'll probably ask you to wear something form fitting also, but not a leotard and pink tights! most of the male dancers I have been in class with have worn either a unitard or a leotard with shorts/leggings. the dance school will probably tell you what they expect to wear. The majority of the time, the dance teacher will say the names of the movements in French, but an understanding of French is not really required. most of the time, a teacher will demonstrate or 'mark through' a combination beforehand anyway (also, you can watch others do the combination). Good luck!

    On attire for gentlemen; snugly fitting sweatpants and a clean white t shirt will be a good choice. If you want to wear tights, it's black, not pink. Several companies make seamed men's tights. Why seams? Because they help your instructor more easily see your leg line. Again, a white t shirt tucked into your tights would be appropriate. A leotard may be worn but please wear the tights over your leotard. Wearing a dance belt is reccomended. Be serious and focus on the dancing and you'll be accepted. Sneakers are fine for the first classes. Ballet slippers (NOT Pointe shoes!) will provide the right amount of grip. Once you get into combinations.

I don’t know what I want to specialize in. I know I really want to do hip hop but i want to eventually branch out to like contemporary or lyrical and I know I need technique. • @BallerinasByNight
      @BallerinasByNight  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think ballet is never a bad place to start for some basics, but if hip hop is your focus, I would say jump right into that! Switching from ballet to hip hop once you have yourself trained for ballet is very challenging. But if you can do both side-by-side, you'll be set up well to start incorporating contemporary or lyrical when you're ready! - Jana

    • @BallerinasByNight
      @BallerinasByNight  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand the feeling that one class a week won't be enough! But you will get a lot out of that one class just being really present and giving 110% for every combo and correction. Could you add in an online class or barre another day a week? Even just strength exercises will help keep things activated in the days between class!

    I started ballet when I was 4, and I am 12 now.
    But my lessons are only once a week

      If you want to be a professional then i suggest that you practise everyday, like 5 to 6 times a week

      Thank you guys (and @Anna Ballerina)! I talk about it at the end of the 30 Minute Ballet Barre video we just posted this morning, but I am doing better! I've had a couple massages and have stopped carrying my photography gear on my body - got a rolling cart thing. It takes more time that way, but it has made all the difference in the stiffness. Still have a lot of tension left to get massaged out though!

    I'm 27, chubby, and i had my first ever ballet class last week. In our dance school, i had no choice but the 'advanced ballet" class... I am with thin and young ballet dancer that have been dancing all their life. I walked in with a tank top and leggins... while everybody was wearing leotard and pink thights... yikes! still not sure if i will continue or not...

      Oh wow, I can't believe they put you in an advanced class with no prior ballet experience! I think your attire is just fine and I would ask them about a lower level class or shop around to different studios, if you have the option! - Jana

      Mawizz, I am 70 and started a beginners Silver Swans ballet class a year ago and love the graceful movements and beautiful music. Movement and dance is for everyone to enjoy no matter what age shape or size we are. Keep those toes twinkling

    I wanna take an adult ballet class. But I'm fat. Maybe I should wait until I lose some weight.

      Im.Not.A.Monster I just took my first adult ballet class and there were 8 people, 2 of them really overweight but nobody cared about that they have to work as hard as we did and in my opinion they looked way better than most of the other people (better turn out and stuff like that) so don't let your weight hold you back just do what you want

    I love ballet! I have the body type for it and took it for three years when I was younger. I love how this sport praises skinny people and doesn’t demonize them like other sports!
