  • ❓Are you desperately trying to find the right outfit for your adult ballet class? I imagine you don’t want to look like a kid or a dancer who is clearly a beginner in the discipline of ballet. 🙅‍♀️ As adults, we struggle to be comfortable showing off our bits, or finding support in the right areas avoiding the embarrassment of the giggles or, even worse, falling out of the leotard! 🔴Not yet ready for an adult ballet class? Download my free “get ballerina fit” workout plan at this link 👉 bit.ly/free-download-yt and get your body stronger for ballet in no time.
There are tricks that ballerinas have to feel comfortable and look their best. 😉
There are DOs and DONT in “what to wear'' that will make you either look like an expert or a complete beginner.
One thing is sure, we want to feel good, and comfortable and hit the right lines, that a simple outfit is going to either enhance or break. 💃🌹
    If you are asking yourself:
❓What cut leotard is going to look good on me?
❓Do I put my tights over or under the leotard? What color and why?
❓Are skirts better long or short?
❓What to wear for warm-up? And why should I take my warm-ups off?
❓Can I pull off a leotard without looking like the ‘70s in a Jane Fonda Workout?
❓What combinations and color palettes look good together? 🤯
Then you are definitely about to watch the right video!

I prefer B, unless adding a piece of skirt then A looks very pretty

Having started ballet classes in the 60s, I grew up wearing my tights under my leotard, and still do. But I followed the advice of a ballet class friend, who told me to try bare feet in my pointe shoes, and it made a world of difference ! Of course, by bare feet I mean bare under toe pads ! I may have started ballet in the 60s, when toe pads were cumbersome affairs at best, but I nevertheless appreciate the protection and level of comfort silicone toe pads offer nowadays ! Less pain means more focus on dancing...
My only gripe as far as ballet clothes is that if you are like me a big size (I need at least XL or XXL), and have a nice round potbelly and big breasts, there is absolutely nothing designed for you. XL sizes have nipped in waistlines, and there is practicaly zero dancewear with adequate support for big "busoms". And I am still to find an athletic bra that both fits, supports and is not hugely conspicous under a leotard. Thankfully I found one style by Bloch that had both a lined bra and back strap, but that's about the only one I have in my collection. And it's stretchy enough to accommodate my big belly. But for the moment I have given up on the idea of wearing one of those lovely, lacy skirts. I know exactly what will happen if I try it, at the first move the skirt wil slip up over my potbelly and rest nicely just under my boobs. If I want to wear one I would probably have to sew it in place on my leotard. Or make me a overdress in gauzy material to achieve something similar. So no skirt, but layers to warm up and discard as class progresses yes,
That's the bane of being 60, overweight, and afflicted with a lifelong case of ballet fever... I am usually the oldest and fattest in my class, but that does not prevent me from going on pointes twice a week ! And to hell with bra lines showing, and slightly too tight waistlines !
    And keep on dancing !

These are great tips! As an adult beginner (many years ago) I was so uncomfortable with my body, and I kept baggy pants on the whole time. As I got more confident, I still wanted coverage, and your shorts trick is exactly what I did. It was my go to for a decade.
Also rolling the tights up to my ankle was huge. I had weird sensory issues with tights covering my feet, and when someone told me about the convertible foot option it was a game changer. I improved so much once I wasn’t uncomfortable anymore.
    Awesome video!

my foot slipping inside the tights when i wear soft shoes helps me with correcting my balance and my en dehors however i always pull it up when i'm on pointe so i can feel the shoe better and prevent slipping !! thanks for the great tips I love how you explained the whole dress code and why tights over leotards trully do help you define your lines better :)

A is so strange, but is better. The waistband line functions as hip alignment belt.

I can always count in you for the greatest instruction in a applicable way, esp. for adults. However, I owe you my life for this one! Ballet is intimidating, so everyone is afraid to ask, confused as to what to wear, you are an angel!

I never liked tights on the outside - but used to cut out my tight toes too ! And always wore a skirt after barre on floor. :P Thank you for the lovely fashion show!!!

I admit, I can't stand "tights over leo" - for some reason, the tights ride down when I do that (and then it gets super un-comfy - the brand also doesn't seem to matter, all I tried so far do that on my body ... ), and I really don't like the look on me - although I think it's flattering on others, but this just won't work for me.
But I love unitards - ever since, and biketards.
When I was a teen, I adopted my teacher's style (ballet master from Prague) - who preferred jazz pants and a shirt, both very tight of course, and the trousers just had a very small flare at the bottom, so not the super wide style. Today, with 40+, I started loving ballet tights and leos (there's so much great stuff around now, back then when I was a kid, there still wasn't much, apart from shiny spandex) - but it's mosty dark colours for me.

Hi Alessia!! I am an adult beginner(going to be 20 soon), I have always admired ballet but due to financial reasons, I couldn't start taking classes. I do hope I will be able to go "en pointe" one day, I don't know if that is possible now though... Do you have any tips that I could use to be able to do well and could you maybe do a tutorial solely for pre-pointe exercises? By the way, I love your videos!! you are ever so charming and I have so much fun doing your workouts.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos 🥰

I thought the tights over leotard was a matter of being practical, to be easier to shed layers 😅 but you're right, it looks better

Well hello Alessia, always a pleasure to meet you no matter the subject. Personally, I prefer option B. I have always been classic and traditional. All the ballet classes I've taken in my life, we've all been dressed in black singlets and pink tights. In this way the class did not have the area of a pizza dough. lollll In the end, what counts is being well for ballet or any other activity. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.🤗🥰🇨🇦

I prefer the flesh tone/pink tights under the leo and black tights over. I think black under the leo looks silly and flesh tone/pink tights over gives the illusion of being nude.
I also prefer to have my tights at my knees, calf muscle, or stirruped. 😅 I know the shorter lengths cut the line, but I think they flatter my leg shape more than having my tights go to the ankle.

Lol I imagine most ballet dancers are almost freezing because they’re usually so tiny! I’m a plus size dancer so I do not have a problem about getting warm during class. I already have that extra padding to keep my muscles warm!

I think lots of pros have issues with the cold because they often start dancing first thing in the morning, sometimes before the building is fully warm, or on cold stages. Also, they may need extra after feeling stiff from performances the previous day or getting stiff after a weekend ☺️☺️☺️
