Great show Armand and Pete. A fresh take on Prince's oeuvre which really got me excited to discover the box sets of PR and Sign and his whole later catalogue past Diamonds and Pearls. If you look around internet Prince rankings usually rank his first 10 records as his best in a similar order. They were of course culturally impactful in their day, but I don't get fired up hearing them as much as discovering the deep cuts from PR and Sign box sets, and the to me new discoveries Emancipation, 3121, Welcome 2 America that contain vibrant, joyful music with a more current sound. To me this was probably the most worthwhile ranking show on SoT that I have watched.
@@poliziagrammaticale9430 it was a great show. Nice to have a different music talked about for a change. I don't know much about Prince except for about 4 of his songs and the movie Purple Rain.
Man, when Prince was great, he was simply unbelievable. Even some of his later albums were pretty good. Not to mention, he was a god-tier virtuoso musician. He was funky to the core, but could also melt your face right off.
So glad you covered Prince. Despite his pop star status I still feel like he truly doesn’t get the recognition he deserves as a stellar musician, songwriter and performer. He was the pop Mozart imo. No album/song sounds the same. Musician of all trades.
the most complete package of all time...nothing he couldn't do better or at least as good as any other artist in all areas...writer, musician, singer, producer, dancer, arranger, ...from prodigy to icon...one of the rare ones who exceeded unreal expectations....trend setter...duff mckagen was listening to prince albums while recording appetite for destruction to show his widespread influence on 80s music. had the number 1 album, song , and movie at the same time..basically captured popular culture in 84.. .then made a complete left turn instead of cashing in with a retread of purple rain...changed the sound of music in the 80s..then changed the business end in the 90s. one of the best live performers ever...A wealth of talent that is almost otherwordly.
I always want to pick a more obscure album as my favorite when the subject of Prince comes up, but at the end of the day, Around The World In A Day is by far and away the one I listen to the most.
I'm not the biggest Prince fan but, I know a few of his albums. It was tons of fun watching this particular ranking of the albums because I learned a few things about Prince. I'm glad Pete, for whatever reason, you decided to talk about Prince. It's a welcome change from Iron Maiden and Judas Priest 🤣However, on Monday, I will give my opinion on Whitesnake vs. Rainbow😊
Really great show Pete and Armando - clearly both so passionate about Prince and his uniqueness. Music - like you two my tastes run wide. Prog, Metal, Funk, Jazz, World...and more. Good to hear.
Had no idea Pete was a Prince fan and he drops this on us. Thanks Pete!!! You are the man. There is hope 5-10 years from now, I'll get that Bon Jovi episode. LOL
Around the World in a Day has a special place in my heart. Loved that Pete included it in his top 10. Purple Rain aside it is the Prince album I have listened to the most from beginning to end (Side A to B). Even listened to it tonight before watching this video!
Very much appreciate this episode, for which I've been hoping for quite a while. Prince was an extraordinary musician and as noted in the episode so diverse in his talents and ability to play different genres. You should consider doing a concert playlist or top songs of Prince as well. My album ranking is: 1) Purple Rain (a masterpiece with no filler songs) (FWIW, my favorite version of the title track is from the live concert he did at Paisley Park in 1999, and the reworking of Let's Go Crazy with 3rdeyegirl is deliciously raunchy in a heavy metal way). 2) Lotusflow3r (a gem that I was surprised was on neither list, with awesome songs such as Colonized Mind, Wall of Berlin, Dreamer, and a great cover of Crimson and Clover) 3) 1999 (my favorite is the underrated Lady Cab Driver) 4) Graffiti Bridge (includes some of my favorite Prince songs: Joy in Repetition and The Question of U) 5) Plectrumelectrum (title tracks is a great rock instrumental) (this period with 3rdeyegirl includes some of his best concert performances) 6) Sign o' the Times (worth it for the title track, alone, but I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man is also particularly great) 6) Chaos and Disorder (great title track and his rockiest album, as Pete note) 7) Crystal Ball (Calhoun Square and The Ride are favorites from this one) 9) The Black Album (luckily, you can listen to this funky one on TH-cam) 10) Love Symbol (includes The Morning Papers, which has some great riffs, and 7, a very catchy tune) Honorable Mention: C-Note is a great instrumental live album.
Prince was an amazing artist. I was lucky enough to see him on the opening and closing nights of a 7-day run in San Francisco during the Purple Rain tour! Unbelievable performances! But….the highlight for me was attending the Bangles show in SF for their Manic Monday tour! Prince came out to play with them on Manic Monday and also came back out to play Whole Lotta Shakin’’ Going on! Now that, was what he excelled at, surprise visits and just tearing the place down! Great. Memories!
Are you the real Eric Johnson? i mean the guitar player who released the fantastic album Venus Isle? i believe that Prince was a great artist, he is in my list of the 5 best and greatest artists in history, along with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, Prince was involved in every aspect of his music, he was a great vocalist and a great musician that could play a lot of instruments amazingly, he had 42 albums in a short period, the only artist who had more albums in a short period relatively was Frank Zappa with 62 albums!!!!!!!! you have some great albums too!
Love this channel and so pleased my favourite artist has made it on. Not my usual music taste but I loved Prince - just wish more guitar based albums were put out cos he's a genius
I worked at a music store in Lemoyne Pa in the late 90's to mid 2000's. One of our regulars was on the road with a big production company and he was on the road with Prince one summer. He said he was at soundcheck and they were running through When Doves Cry. There is an ascending keyboard run at the very end. Prince obviously surrounded himself with top notch musicians. My buddy said the keyboardist was fumbling the line. Eventually Prince walked over to him, reached over the keyboard, looked him in the eye and played the line UPSIDE DOWN PERFECTLY!! Isane talent RIP
Prince is an absolute genius like Bowie his music takes you on a time frame life journey with twists and turns like a rainbow of many colours of styles and like Bowie if you love him you love his time frames he was a gift for all music fans willing to open there mind to alternative styles LEGEND brilliant show Pete pushing the envelope great 🏴🤟👍🏼
Armando was an amazing co-host, as good as anyone asked to rank albums along Pete (I don't feel I'm being partial to fellow Italians). Really loved listening to your points Armando, hope to catch you again on SOT soon. Ciao!
This is a very welcome surprise! I never expected to see a Prince album ranking on SOT! Actually, though, Prince might be a *perfect* SOT artist, as he was restlessly creative, and eclectic too, quite musically adventurous, with many different "eras" of his music, like Bowie, as Pete mentioned. I was recently listening to the ending "string section" part of "Purple Rain," and I even thought, "Hey, this sounds proggy!" :-)
I don’t regret much. But one thing I absolutely regret was not going to see Prince when he played here in Oakland on his “Piano and a Microphone” solo tour just a couple of weeks before he died.
Great show. I never got into Prince's hits, but his performances at the Rock Hall induction and Super Bowl convinced me he was worth exploring. This show may help me find an entry into his vast catalog.
This was a brilliant show very informative very balanced. Armando is great and very knowledgeable. Prince was a wonderful artists who never stood still.thank you again tim x
Cool show! Being more of a Metal & Prog fan, I’ve never really investigated Prince’s music, but I listened to Purple Rain for the first time yesterday. With so many albums I’m very glad to have some ideas of what to check out next! Excited for the Tea Party show as well, I think they’re a very under-appreciated band. Thanks Armando & Pete!
1) Purple Rain 2) Sign o’ the Times 3) 1999 4) Chaos and Disorder 5) Dirty Mind 6) Plectrumelectrum 7) Around the World in a Day 8) Controversy 9) Parade 10) Lovesexy 11) Prince 12) Graffiti Bridge 13) The Gold Experience 14) The Rainbow Children 15) Love Symbol 16) Diamonds and Pearls 17) Emancipation 18) Musicology 19) Batman 20) NEWS 21) For You 22) The Black Album 23) 3121 24) Planet Earth 25) Lotusflow3r 26) Xpectation 27) Welcome 2 America 28) One Nite Alone 29) The Chocolate Invasion 30) The Slaughterhouse 31) Art Official Age 32) 20Ten 33) Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic 34) Hit n Run Phase Two 35) Hit n Run Phase One 36) Come
Thank you Pete. For addressing this artist. You are correct a Melting Pot of Music came from this artist. I'm a huge fan. I would have to say Purple Rain, Sign O times. Have to be at the top of the list. It was always an absolute thrill when he picked up the guitar. He was a incredible guitarist. A lot of people don't know that.
Very glad to see this session. Very creative and talented man. And a cool guy. Some of those post-90s albums are lost on me. I should probably investigate that Rainbow Children album. My top 5 favorites? 1) Dirty Mind 2) Prince 3) Controversy 4) Sign of the Times 5) 1999 6) Gold 7) Purple Rain 8) Crystal Ball 9) Around the World 10) Parade
1. Diamonds and Pearls 2. Emancipation 3. Purple Rain 4. Love Symbol Album 5. The Gold Experience 6. Sign 'O' the Times 7. The Black Album 8. Controversy 9. 1999 10. Chaos and Disorder
Commented with respect to an earlier SoT show that Purple Rain was the only Prince album needed to enjoy Prince. It remains my favorite and is played often. But this show has rekindled an interest in revisiting more of his catalogue so thanks to Armando and you, too, Pete, for accomplishing that task.
I've yet to listen to all of his albums, such a prolific artist and definitely a genius. He made real almost perfect albums but I agree that many of his albums were not fully fleshed, that's why I compared him to Frank Zappa because Zappa also rarely made a perfect album because they had so many ideas going on at the same time it was hard for them to stay in a lane for too long. This would be my preliminary list in no particular order except for the first 4 spots and honorary mentions making it to the top 10 sometimes: 1. Sign O the Times 2. Around the World in A Day 3. Old Friends For Sale 4. Diamonds and Pearls 5. Emancipation 6. For You 7. Chaos and Disorder 8. Welcome to America 9. N. E. W. S. 10. Purple Rain 11. The Gold Experience 12. 1999 13. Batman 14. Symbol I really enjoyed Armando's input, he know what he's talking about and I love his sense of humour. High five.
This was a great great episode. While I do love and appreciated Prince, I never went to deep into his catalog. Thanks to you, I have some additional Prince music to look into
Armando is right about the nice gesture of letting the guests always start first. Good one there Pete! I counted and I own twelve Prince albums including one from "The Time" (which bascially is Prince doing an album for somebody else). I totally agree that many albums are all over the place, which can make them a hard listen. Especially the longer albums. A few very cool tracks, some decent and some you never need to hear again. Not always easy to reach for those records. If you only heard a few songs by Prince and they aren't your thing. I would suggest his late 70's albums "For You" and "Prince". While still Prince they aren't as far out there as many of his other records. I like them both a lot. Also. In 2019 they released an album called "Originals" where you can find Prince originals on songs other did cover or he wrote for them. Not a perfect listen but since it's hits it is more easily to get than some of his other work.
Enjoyed this video and have loved Prince's music since buying 1999 on vinyl way back when. My top 10, any of the top 4 could be my #1 1: Sign 'O' The Times 2: 1999 3: Parade... The complete opposite of SIgn 'O' The Times. More succinct and to the point. 4: Purple Rain 5: Lovesexy.... Love this album. The attitude of the cover art, that the whole album is one track on CD and the songs are underrated. 6: The Gold Experience... My most played Prince album over the last 18 months 7: Around The World In A Day 8: Black Album 9: Emancipation 10: Love Symbol... "My Name Is Prince And I Am Funky"
Great to see you do a retrospective on His Royal Badness! Prince Nelson Rogers was probably responsible for turning me onto metal via Purple Rain! Well done mate! Regards S RIP Prince 💜
I had the pleasure to see and HEAR the "Diamonds and Pearls" show in Munich 1992. Unforgettable and unsurpassed in pop music I have ever experienced. He was an absolutely genius🎶
So hard to rank these! And if anyone hasn’t seen it, check out Prince’s Super Bowl halftime show! Awesome! 1. Purple Rain 2. Sign O The Times 3. Chaos and Disorder 4. 1999 5. Around The World In A Day 6. Diamonds and Pearls 7. Love Symbol Album 8. Batman Soundtrack 9. Rave Un 2 The Joy Fantastic 10. Hit n Run ( phase 2)
The best Prince album for me must be Purple Rain, let me tell you why, i am a rock and metal fan primarily, nobody expected Prince at the time to do an album with rock orientation, it contains very hard rhythm guitar playing and some great guitar solos, fantastic songs and fantastic lyrics, and the vocals of Prince are perfect, to hear in the same song the clean and high vocals and then to hear some of the most agressive vocals from Prince is totally mindblowing, and there was the movie so everyone could see Prince as a great performer on live shows, when taking all these together we got the triumph combination, cheers to Pete and Armando.
I love Prince! My top 10 would be: 1. Purple Rain 2. Sign o' the Times 3. Prince 4. Come 5. Lovesexy 6. Around the World in a Day 7. Diamonds and Pearls 8. Parade 9. 1999 10. Emancipation
Die-hard Prince fan here! Here's my own top ten: 1. Purple Rain* 2. Sign O' the Times* 3. 1999 4. The Gold Experience 5. Dirty Mind 6. Around the World in a Day 7. Musicology 8. [Love Symbol] 9. The Black Album 10. Lovesexy *On any given day, I could swap these for number one. Both are basically perfect albums to me! I'd put Diamonds and Pearls at 11. I think for many it's easy to just assume that his classic period--which I would extend up to his 'retirement' around Hits 1 & 2--is the best, and anything after was lesser. I couldn't disagree more. His 90's output was really good. Some of his fan club-only albums in the early 00's are definitely worth a listen. And his final surge of material before he passed deserves more attention.
I think most essential album is " Lovesexy " . " Sign of o times " are masterpiece . Best album is " Purple Rain " ( deluxe have even better songs then original ) , love " Batman " for sentimental reasons - had original tape , maybe one of first albums i bought . Then i lost him ...Grunge overwhelming everything . After i listen Prince songs and love some albums but all that was to pretension for me as 20 years old kid . Yes , " All Day Around World " and " Parade " are so unique and different in a positive way . Congratulation guys - great show ! I enjoyed so much . Thanx .
Prince.. The Time.. Vanity 6.. all so very connected to my teenage years. All so very good. I play the Vanity 6 album the most of all. The breadth of your choices is appreciated. Thanks, y'all. 💜
Prince LIVE AT THE ALLADDIN, LAS VEGAS is a great concert. 20 years ago(?), I bought the DVD at a Best Buy. Pretty sure it's on YT. Sheila E, Rhonda Smith, John Blackwell, Eric Leeds, Renato Neto, Maceo, & Greg Boyer are the band. They f'in' cook! The sax/keys solos go off into a little jazz-ville.
The greatest musician to ever live. Since he has so many albums and I haven't heard all of his albums, I can only give a top 5 5 Diamonds And Pearls 4. Prince 3. Purple Rain 2 1999 1 For You
Good job Pete it was nice to hear about a different type of music. I relistened to it because I started it late. Is Purple Rain the best ablum to get or is there one better. I know 3 of his songs. A college friend of mine liked his movie back when it came out she said that it was good. I don't see her anymore so I can't ask her about his albums. Thanks for the show Pete and Armando.
Absolutely LOVE Prince. A one of a kind musician. He was also an incredible guitar player! One of the most talented artists to ever live. He is missed. Here are some of my favorites (not as familiar with a lot of his catalogue as I should be.): 1999 Sign o' the Times Controversy Prince Purple Rain The Gold Experience Dirty Mind
Major surprise, this! First got into Prince in '92 with his symbol album. Still love that one. Went backwards to Diamonds and Pearls, and then the rest of his earlier ones. Completely lost track of him around 2000, as he was releasing quite the amount of albums, and by that time, I was into way too many other things to care. Purple Rain is my fav, then Sign O' The Times is second. His first two albums are very enjoyable, even if they were only a hint of what was to come. Great episode!
The Undertaker is amazing, I had the video many years ago it was from a jam session, he did at Paisley Park with Michael Bland on drums and Sonny Thompson on bass. He was going to form a new band with them in the early nineties and do more guitar based music. The guitar playing from The Undertaker project is amazing.
Great video gents! I absolutely love Prince, I've got most of his albums that were released on CD, I'm only missing crystal ball and the 3 disc lotusflow3r/MPLSOUND, but they're like rocking horse shite here in the UK, but one day hopefully!!
Specifically thank you two for clueing me into the better later stuff. I ran out of tracking him about diamonds and pearls..looks like rainbow children must be special . Thanks
My favorite artist I own all of his albums including the 12 reissues that were released last week. We have to have the original and we shoot for every album of his My top 10 favorites 1. purple rain 2. Sign o the times 3. 1999 4. Diamonds and pearls 5. Around the world in a day 6. Musicology 7. Emancipation 8. Dirty mind 9. Controversy 10. Prince It doesn't count but Prince's best album is the besides disc that comes with the hits to besides collection absolutely perfect some of those songs it's a shame they went on on the albums.
Of all of the artists no longer with us that I regret never seeing live, Prince tops the list. So many albums, but I'll take a whack: 1. Purple Rain - one of the greatest albums in modern music history 2. Sign 'o the Times - "Starfish and Coffee" is my favorite Prince deep cut 3. 1999 - "Little Red Corvette" alone is worth the price of admission 4. Around the World in a Day -- ask me tomorrow, I could rank this higher 5. Chaos and Disorder - tremendously underrated (even by Prince himself) 6. Controversy - Prince's first truly great album 7. Dirty Mind - also could have been called Controversy 8. Diamonds and Pearls - another one I could rank higher on a different day 9. The Gold Experience - I didn't love it at the time, but it has grown on me 10. Emancipation - would have been better as a double album; has some interesting cover tunes, which Prince rarely did
Prince is my favorite musician of all time, I have loved Prince since I was a teenager back in the eighties. Seen him a couple of times in concert and he was incredible every time I seen him. He was a genius. Sign O' Times Purple Rain 1999 Around The World Parade Lovesexy Dirty Mind Controversy Diamonds and Pearls Prince Love Symbol Chaos and Disorder
In honor of his classic 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Performance 1. Purple Rain (1984) 2. 1999 (1982) 3. Prince (1979) 4. Controversy (1981) 5. Around the World in a Day (1985)
Big respect for putting NEWS so high. Prince fans don't usually have much to say about that album, but it covers a lot of musical ground and is very worthy as a jazz fusion album. The way he padded out the end of the tracks so they all add up to exactly 14 minutes makes for some unnecessary time there though. Weird.
1 - Sign O' The Times / 2 - Purple Rain / 3 - Dirty Mind / 4 - 1999 / 5 - Parade / 6 - Prince (79) / 7 - Around the World in A Day / 8 - Diamonds and Pearls / 9 - Lovesexy / 10 - Controversy
Annie Christian is one of my favorite Prince songs, really deep lyrics. Controversy was the first album I ever bought and the lyrics on that album freaked me out as a pre teen back in the eighties. Controversy is an amazing album.
For me: 1. Purple Rain 2. 1999 3. Sign 0' The Times 4.Around The World in a Day 5. Diamonds and Pearls 6. Love Symbol Album 7. Controversy 8. Chaos and Disorder 9. The Gold Experience 10. Parade
1. Sign O the Times 2. Purple Rain 3. Around the World in a Day 4. Parade 5. Diamonds and Pearls 6. Black Album 7. Piano and Microphone 8. Originals 9. 1999 10. Lovesexy
Mine 💜 LP List: 1. Purple Rain 2. 1999 3. Sign of the times 4. Dirty Mind 5. Parade 6. Controversy 7. Prince 8. For you 9. Around the world in a day 10. The Black album 💜 7 LP Honorable mentions: 11. Love Sexy 12. The Family 13. Come 14. The Exodus 15. The Time 16. Vanity 6 17. 8 💜 Prince’s Purple Hot 🔥🔥🔥🔥 B-Side Joints: 1. Erotic city 2. She’s always in my hair 3. irresistible bitch 4. How come you don’t call me anymore 5. Alexa De Paris 6. A father song 7. Girl 8. All My Dreams 9. Love or the money 10. Shockadelica 11. Horny toad 12. Chocolate 💜💜💜💜 Prince was a prolific songwriter. I can only imagine what his work ethic must have been back in the 80s - 90s And throughout his entire career. He is the definition of a true artist. Along with his outstanding guitar playing and performances. Prince was one of a kind💜 my entire list is subject to change,, depending on my mood 🤣🤣🤣 But for today,, that’s it💜💜💜💜💜
Just read that N.E.W.S. Is PRINCE lowest sales ever, just 30,000 copies. But , after PETES positive comments, that will change.( lol). This was a good episode. Not gonna lie, I only know.a portion of PRINCE s discography, but I am a music fan, and I know LEGENDS when I hear 👂 them. PHENOMENAL guitarist./ artist !👍💯
PRINCE .... The One and Only .... here are my Top 10 1. Purple Rain 2. 1999 3. Sign O' The Times 4. Parade 5. Around The World In A Day 6. Prince (1979 self titled) 7. Controversy 8. The Gold Experience 9. Chaos And Disorder 10. Plectrumelectrum there you go .... Enjoy !!
That co-host never shuts up and skipped over his choices. Not so with pete. Born in '58 means he was 18 eighteen years later, not 16! Best albums: 1999, purple rain, sign.
Prince was a unique voice, his catalogue is filled with wondrous music. Besides the obvious highlights there is much gold in every era. Lately I've been addicted to Lotusflower, 3121, Xpectation and The Rainbow Children. All from the 2000s. Not everything is great, but a high portion of it is. A wealth of worthy material.
My intro was I Wanna Be Your Lover, which I didn't think too much of - who's the dude with the high voice? Jumped in when I heard Little Red Corvette and got the 1999 LP for my birthday.... expect it was the single LP version! I never knew it was meant to be a double until I saw it a couple of years later on the shelf, what the hell? So I had these tracks: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious, Free, Side 2- Let's Pretend We're Married, Something In The Water, Lady Cab Driver
Wow! Prince on Tranquility. Cool! It's the music of my childhood. The first artist of who i dicovered a catalogue. I was born in 1975 and my big sister became a fan from Parade on and i ate it up. Was listening tons to it on my walkman. Classic '80 stuff. Everything from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy is excellent, with 1999, Purple Rain, Parade and Sign ot times as my absolute favorites. Still some few good albums after that but then things became very uneven starting with Emancipation. The spark was gone. But live he stayed unparraleled. Seen 5/6 concerts and 1 afterparty. Unbelievable live artist! Still have to check out The Rainbow children. My sister still kept up with 'm but i lost interest in him and discovered metal. She had a party at our house and a friend of hers put Pantera's Vulgar and (half of) Cowboys on cassette for me. This was in 1992/1993 and the rest is history 🤘 After my 2 year only metal phase i really expanded my musical horizon and finally sometimes influenced my big sister.
I would like to thank Pete for taking a chance and doing a show that was unexpected.
Good to see you on the show Armando. You did a good job about Princes ablums.
Great show. Unexpected and much appreciated.
@@poliziagrammaticale9430 it was a great show. Nice to have a different music talked about for a change. I don't know much about Prince except for about 4 of his songs and the movie Purple Rain.
It’s a tough ranking Armando, Prince has many albums, good job.
Awesome video, guys! Also, rest in peace, Prince, and your mom, Armando. 🙏🏻
the most complete package of all time...nothing he couldn't do better or at least as good as any other artist in all areas...writer, musician, singer, producer, dancer, arranger, ...from prodigy to icon...one of the rare ones who exceeded unreal expectations....trend setter...duff mckagen was listening to prince albums while recording appetite for destruction to show his widespread influence on 80s music. had the number 1 album, song , and movie at the same time..basically captured popular culture in 84.. .then made a complete left turn instead of cashing in with a retread of purple rain...changed the sound of music in the 80s..then changed the business end in the 90s. one of the best live performers ever...A wealth of talent that is almost otherwordly.
One of the most important artists of all times. I cherish every he did between 1982 and 1992.
Thank you, Armando and Pete.
I'm gonna say it. The Prince halftime show was a beautiful event.
100%. It was amazing
Unlike today's Super Bowl halftime show with Hip-Hop artist. Where mostly everything, if not everything, was lip-synced and the music pre-recorded.
It was the best one.
Absolutely
Yes it was.
"Around the world in a day" is my #1. Prince's most creative output imho. Cheers.
I always want to pick a more obscure album as my favorite when the subject of Prince comes up, but at the end of the day, Around The World In A Day is by far and away the one I listen to the most.
I really enjoyed this video been searching for something like this for so long
I'm not the biggest Prince fan but, I know a few of his albums.
LOL
Haha 😂 I can’t see it happening
Can we get martin popoff also 🤣
And a Ramones show too
Around the World in a Day has a special place in my heart.
My album ranking is:
1) Purple Rain (a masterpiece with no filler songs) (FWIW, my favorite version of the title track is from the live concert he did at Paisley Park in 1999, and the reworking of Let's Go Crazy with 3rdeyegirl is deliciously raunchy in a heavy metal way).
2) Lotusflow3r (a gem that I was surprised was on neither list, with awesome songs such as Colonized Mind, Wall of Berlin, Dreamer, and a great cover of Crimson and Clover)
3) 1999 (my favorite is the underrated Lady Cab Driver)
4) Graffiti Bridge (includes some of my favorite Prince songs: Joy in Repetition and The Question of U)
5) Plectrumelectrum (title tracks is a great rock instrumental) (this period with 3rdeyegirl includes some of his best concert performances)
6) Sign o' the Times (worth it for the title track, alone, but I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man is also particularly great)
6) Chaos and Disorder (great title track and his rockiest album, as Pete note)
7) Crystal Ball (Calhoun Square and The Ride are favorites from this one)
9) The Black Album (luckily, you can listen to this funky one on TH-cam)
10) Love Symbol (includes The Morning Papers, which has some great riffs, and 7, a very catchy tune)
Honorable Mention: C-Note is a great instrumental live album.
Prince is awesome. His songwriting and guitar and piano skills. Insanely good. Very impressed and didn't see this ranking coming!
He was a helluva performer too. Guy danced like James brown on steroids
Sign O' Times is a perfect album. Not only my favorite Prince album but my favorite album period. Rock, funk, soul, jazz, psychedelic masterpiece.
Title track is sublime
Yes one of my favorite Prince songs. Very deep lyrics that was written over thirty years ago and still resonate today.
@@venanciahopkins5035 yes it really does! Sad that the world hasn’t progressed in 30 years
@@wildrosesfortheexit the best song of 1987
Love this channel and so pleased my favourite artist has made it on.
Prince= great musician
My understanding is he was to some degree a victim of benzodiasapins, still a bit of a hidden epidemic in the mainstream unfortunately.
Great show. I never got into Prince's hits, but his performances at the Rock Hall induction and Super Bowl convinced me he was worth exploring. This show may help me find an entry into his vast catalog.
Bravo Pete! Thanks for this one . Never expected it.
This was a brilliant show very informative very balanced. Armando is great and very knowledgeable. Prince was a wonderful artists who never stood still.thank you again tim x
Sign of the times for me . Deluxe edition last year is amazing
I was just wondering yesterday if Prince could get a ranking the albums. Huge back catalogue that deserves this treatment.

This was really cool And didn’t see this coming I’m sure the Top Motley Crue discs will be upcoming !??????
Very glad to see this session. Very creative and talented man. And a cool guy. Some of those post-90s albums are lost on me. I should probably investigate that Rainbow Children album. My top 5 favorites?

This would be my preliminary list in no particular order except for the first 4 spots and honorary mentions making it to the top 10 sometimes:
1. Sign O the Times
2. Around the World in A Day
3. Old Friends For Sale
4. Diamonds and Pearls
5. Emancipation
6. For You
7. Chaos and Disorder
8. Welcome to America
9. N. E. W. S.
10. Purple Rain
11. The Gold Experience
12. 1999
13. Batman
14. Symbol
I really enjoyed Armando's input, he know what he's talking about and I love his sense of humour. High five.
Great comparison with Zappa. I totally agree!!
Wow honestly didn't expect this one! Really cool!!
1999, Purple Rain and Sign o the times are all excellent albums
This is a really good episode. It.s amazing all the things he reinvent himself with different sounds.
My top 10, any of the top 4 could be my #1
1: Sign 'O' The Times
2: 1999
3: Parade... The complete opposite of SIgn 'O' The Times. More succinct and to the point.
4: Purple Rain
5: Lovesexy.... Love this album. The attitude of the cover art, that the whole album is one track on CD and the songs are underrated.
6: The Gold Experience... My most played Prince album over the last 18 months
7: Around The World In A Day
8: Black Album
9: Emancipation
10: Love Symbol... "My Name Is Prince And I Am Funky"
Great show. Great topic. Armando is spot on with his comparison of Prince, and MJ. Ones an artist, the other an entertainer. Thanks guys.
Great to see you do a retrospective on His Royal Badness!
Prince Nelson Rogers was probably responsible for turning me onto metal via Purple Rain!
Well done mate!
Regards S
RIP Prince 💜
I had the pleasure to see and HEAR the "Diamonds and Pearls" show in Munich 1992. Unforgettable and unsurpassed in pop music I have ever experienced. He was an absolutely genius🎶
Hi Armando nice to see you again 😊
Thank you Jonathan.😀
Been waiting for this one. Brilliant.
So hard to rank these! And if anyone hasn’t seen it, check out Prince’s Super Bowl halftime show! Awesome!
1. Purple Rain
2. Sign O The Times
3. Chaos and Disorder
4. 1999
5. Around The World In A Day
6. Diamonds and Pearls
7. Love Symbol Album
8. Batman Soundtrack
9. Rave Un 2 The Joy Fantastic
10. Hit n Run ( phase 2)
" Batman" is great , yes .
Epic show fellas! Never knew you had a pretty vast Prince collection Pete!
My top 10 would be:
1. Purple Rain
2. Sign o' the Times
3. Prince
4. Come
5. Lovesexy
6. Around the World in a Day
7. Diamonds and Pearls
8. Parade
9. 1999
10. Emancipation
I love the Madhouse album he did back in 1987, jazz and funk. Really great album.
Great show!
My favorite Prince album is Rainbow Children.
Die-hard Prince fan here! Here's my own top ten:
1. Purple Rain*
2. Sign O' the Times*
3. 1999
4. The Gold Experience
5. Dirty Mind
6. Around the World in a Day
7. Musicology
8. [Love Symbol]
9. The Black Album
10. Lovesexy
*On any given day, I could swap these for number one.
Emancipation, The Gold Experience, 3121 and Come are also great Prince albums and are underrated in the Prince catalog.
“Around The World in a Day” is my favorite album.
Great call on News and Rainbow children Pete! We can only hope there is more stuff like that in the vault. 😀🤟🏼
Prince is my favorite guitarist Pete, he would always play incredible guitar every time I saw in concert.
The greatest musician to ever live. Since he has so many albums and I haven't heard all of his albums, I can only give a top 5
5 Diamonds And Pearls
4. Prince
3. Purple Rain
2 1999
1 For You
Good job Pete it was nice to hear about a different type of music.
Here are some of my favorites (not as familiar with a lot of his catalogue as I should be.):
1999
Sign o' the Times
Controversy
Prince
Purple Rain
The Gold Experience
Dirty Mind
Major surprise, this! First got into Prince in '92 with his symbol album. Still love that one. Went backwards to Diamonds and Pearls, and then the rest of his earlier ones. Completely lost track of him around 2000, as he was releasing quite the amount of albums, and by that time, I was into way too many other things to care. Purple Rain is my fav, then Sign O' The Times is second. His first two albums are very enjoyable, even if they were only a hint of what was to come. Great episode!
I think SYMBOL is a very under rated album, many different styles and that bass line in My Name is Prince!!!!
We have to have the original and we shoot for every album of his
My top 10 favorites

3. 1999
4. Diamonds and pearls
5. Around the world in a day
6. Musicology
7. Emancipation

10. Prince
It doesn't count but Prince's best album is the besides disc that comes with the hits to besides collection absolutely perfect some of those songs it's a shame they went on on the albums.
Very impressed Pete Nice stretch. Thanks.
My top 5
1. Diamonds and Pearls
2. 1999
3. Purple Rain
4. Around The World in a Day
5. Sign O the Times
Of all of the artists no longer with us that I regret never seeing live, Prince tops the list.
So many albums, but I'll take a whack:
1. Purple Rain - one of the greatest albums in modern music history
2. Sign 'o the Times - "Starfish and Coffee" is my favorite Prince deep cut
3. 1999 - "Little Red Corvette" alone is worth the price of admission
4. Around the World in a Day -- ask me tomorrow, I could rank this higher
5. Chaos and Disorder - tremendously underrated (even by Prince himself)
6. Controversy - Prince's first truly great album
7. Dirty Mind - also could have been called Controversy
8. Diamonds and Pearls - another one I could rank higher on a different day
9. The Gold Experience - I didn't love it at the time, but it has grown on me
10. Emancipation - would have been better as a double album; has some interesting cover tunes, which Prince rarely did
My top 5 Prince albums:
1. Purple Rain
2. Sign O The Times
3. 1999
4. Dirty Mind
5. Love Symbol
"7" from the Love Symbol is an amazing song!
Purple Rain number one for me, but I'm really fond of the 3 disc Emancipation.
Gold album was solid too.
Prince is my favorite musician of all time, I have loved Prince since I was a teenager back in the eighties. Seen him a couple of times in concert and he was incredible every time I seen him. He was a genius.
Sign O' Times
Purple Rain
1999
Around The World
Parade
Lovesexy
Dirty Mind
Controversy
Diamonds and Pearls
Prince
Love Symbol
Chaos and Disorder
Around The World In A Day
In honor of his classic 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Performance
1. Purple Rain (1984)
2. 1999 (1982)
3. Prince (1979)
4. Controversy (1981)
Prince has never been my cup of tea but I respect his talent. I enjoyed listening to this and will try another listen.
Prince is the greatest musician of all-time, he could play more than 27 different instruments.
Cardi B is the greatest musician of all time
Annie Christian is one of my favorite Prince songs, really deep lyrics. Controversy was the first album I ever bought and the lyrics on that album freaked me out as a pre teen back in the eighties. Controversy is an amazing album.
His piano and voice album is superb
Absolutely nobody would choose NEWS as their second fave Prince album. Except Pete. (I gave it another listen and it is quite nice)
For me:
1. Purple Rain
2. 1999
3. Sign 0' The Times
4.Around The World in a Day
5. Diamonds and Pearls
6. Love Symbol Album
7. Controversy
8. Chaos and Disorder
9. The Gold Experience
10. Parade
I own 8 albums (6 LPs and 2 on CD) and 1 compilation CD, so a lot of Prince's work to catch up with. Good to detour from usual topics on SoT.
Great guest funny guy
Saw him with the Time on the Musicology tour. Amazing! Especially the acoustic segment.

Thanks for doing this show.
PRINCE .... The One and Only ....
here are my Top 10
1. Purple Rain
2. 1999
3. Sign O' The Times
4. Parade
5. Around The World In A Day
6. Prince (1979 self titled)
7. Controversy
8. The Gold Experience
9. Chaos And Disorder
10. Plectrumelectrum
there you go .... Enjoy !!
That co-host never shuts up and skipped over his choices. Not so with pete. Born in '58 means he was 18 eighteen years later, not 16! Best albums: 1999, purple rain, sign.
Wendy and Lisa self titled is well worth checking out. A connection to Prince.
Absolutely! Love the song "Waterfall'"
So I checked out Controversy and Sign O the Times. Not my thing. However, Rainbow Children was pretty good. May try a few more
