    • @erinsmith5326
      @erinsmith5326 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      It's true that they should have read the contracts first, but I think all everyone was thinking about was the money they would earn, and I think in their mothers' case, they would probably not have understood what they were reading, so how could they have possibly explained anything to their children at the time? They needed to have lawyers present to help them to understand the language written in the contract, and what everything meant; but unfortunately, they more than likely could not afford to have a lawyer help them understand the contract before signing, and it was just a sad and terrible situation all around, they shouldn't have had to experience something like that, but unfortunately, that's how the music industry works.

This is an old age story with so many recording artists. I have always heard "What you don't know won't hurt you" but in this case what was not known hurt a whole lot. All the talent and gifting that allowed them to excel in the music business and no business savvy or business acumen cost them dearly. Wolves and savages do not care who they take advantage of and coming from the projects it was as if many played on that mindset of "we just happy to be here." They had a passion for performing and it was a shame that their lack of business knowledge was a weakness taken advantage of. I feel this is a contributing factor as to why God has allowed them to maintain and sustain through the years and reap some of the fruits of their labor on the back end because they have sown so much through the years; never falling short of excellence! May God continue to show them favor, open doors, and allow their latter days to be much greater than the former days!

    Maurice Starr I truly believe is the real crook. Brooke did a lot for New Edition, to the point where he even gave them their name. If anything his money is within that $1.87 mix as well. I love NE but they can be something else at times smdh 🤦🏾‍♀️

    I'm noticing a lot of hostility towards the parents, smh, people plz keep in mind that back in the days Labels created slave contracts on purpose. This just wasn't happening to NE! it happen to many artists, NWA, TLC, Prince etc.... Prince! created a way to get out of those crooked contracts by writing by changing his name to the Artist! so that he could still create music. Game changer, so for today's artists can be independent without the machine. Labels are struggling today, because Artist's smarten up.

      +mesmerizingDST No excuses at all. But I understand from a place of compassion. I'm not gonna even pretend to know what it must feel like to be a single parent struggling & not wanting to question opportunity when it present itself. The parents jump at the chance of a lifetime & the rest is history

    • @SupremeNerd
      @SupremeNerd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes they would that is if they had a clue about how to deal with these type of things to begin with...they didn't and just like every struggling parent at that time, They saw dollar signs and that was all they thought about. remember in 1979-1980, 500 bucks was quite a bit of bread.

      mesmerizingDST, While I can see where you are coming from, the artists you talk about being able to read and negotiate their contracts were adults, so they knew what they were reading, and could understand them a little bit with their lawyers present. The members of New Edition at the time, were children, so they couldn't possibly understand what they were reading. Their mothers' were struggling, and were, I'm sure, working very hard to provide for their children the best way they could, before this opportunity presented itself, and like I said in my previous response, their mothers' could not afford lawyers to help them understand the contract.

    • @SupremeNerd
      @SupremeNerd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The candy girl album if Im not mistaken is handles by someone else now...I think Rhino records owns the rights to it....They did just release the 25th anniversary version of thAT album UPDATE!!!! Streetwise records is owned by Phase One Network, a music asset management company which now controls over 20 labels in the pop, rap, dance, jazz, and R&B genres.now which is NOT in defunct so if NE wanted to, they could buy back the rights to that album from them

  • @akilalleyne426
    @akilalleyne426 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't know this for a fact...but I think this predatory practice you always hear about in the music business stems from the record companies arranging things to minimize their own risk at the artists' expense. In business in general, when you invest money in a venture, you understand that you're taking a certain risk that the venture might flop, the investment might not pay off, and you might not even break even, let alone actually *make* any money. But they conveniently structure the expenses they have to pay as a loan so as to *guarantee* that they get that money back, whether the act blows up or goes belly up. It seems to me that they basically put all the risk on the artists, which isn't really fair-especially when they're a bunch of kids.
