But see it was a blessing Bobby got voted out of the group because Bobby became the most famous one up until today Bobby is more famous than new edition.
It was easier to accuse Brook about the money situation, when all of the moms were in a room allowing their sons to sign a contract without reading it first
It is unbelievable of how they accused Brooke of being Shady and they decided to higher the white man thinking he would've been the better fit and he's the one that does them dirty. These mothers were just interested in fast money and were desperate to live off their sons and see them as their ticket out.
Brooke only got a %10 managerial fee, which wouldve made him cash .18 cents. He was too calm for me. 18 cents cant even get you a pack a skittles. He was ripped off too.
It just goes to show he wasn't in it for the money, you can really tell he is a humble dude, because he STILL has their backs to this very day, which says A LOT about his character....
In the 80s it would have gotten him at least a pack of bubble gum, if he borrowed 2 pennies! Then he'd have to borrow another couple of cents for tax, unless he lived in a state which didn't charge tax on consumable items other than service goods.
GeeOhDee Three6ixFive The group members had been broke for years. It was very sad the Management took advantage of them they didn't know anything about the industry they were so young. They were like 13 14 years old. Bobby Brown's brother had said whenever he saw bobby and the other members coming home with no money he would get concern. Bobby Brown's brother also said that the group had a big hit over the radio but none of them was making anything. His brother somehow knew that somebody was making money on the trips.
Brooke _always_ had the group's best interest. Everybody was too blind to see Gary was only in it for the $$$. Keep a squeaky clean image while I rob the most of y'all out your money. He wasn't shit.
David Richardson Looks like Gary and Maurice got the on a production deal and redirected the bread. That recoupable situation is real. Not as bad these days but real back then.
Brooke loved them with all his heart. He would've never done them dirty. Now Gary & Maurice Starr on the other hand they definitely had no problem with doing N.E wrong Brooke was the best
Definitely, but imho, had she not taken that stand, they never would have grown. Individually and as a group. Her stand forced them to decide between loyalty to family (Brooke) and getting paid. However, I wouldn't have fired him, I would have engaged an experienced financial advisor to review and advise on contracts. Brooke was the best thing that could have happened to them from a guidance/oversight perspective. He genuinely cared for them and had their best interest in mind. Unfortunately, it seems that he was just as ignorant or misinformed to the business as they were and they where children. Regardless, they're LEGENDS in the game!
When she said the second "raise your hand", as well as the stare, it kinda looked and felt like she was COMMANDING the other moms to raise their hands. Edit: after watching the movie, I COMPLETELY get behind the other mothers turning their backs on her after Bobby got fired from the group (and trash talking her too).
2 Things Need To Addressed... #1. Read The Contract Throughly With A Dictionary On Standby For Clear Reference And/Or Seek Legal Advice For Business Clarifications To Understand Farther Obligations And Their Standpoint Of Representation #2. Nothing Is Free In The Entertainment Industry. The Hotels, Food, Clothes, Studio Time, Producers, etc. After The Expenses Are Paids, Then You Get Paid. Ex. Same shit happen with TLC when they sign with Pebbles and All 3 members were broke Brooke Payne Didn't Have Nothing To Do With Maurice Starr Business Practices, because its technically legal
Khiry Johnson Exactly I feel like anyone who is thinking gettinf into the business needs a lawyer present to negotiate and get clarifications about their contract.
Exactly but they learned they lesson cause even after they got rid of Brooke they were still broke. Proving that he was never the problem. And then on top of that they hired a new manager who was actually stealing from them for years. That’s sad as hell.
Right, he even said he didnt know the money part about managing he only knew how to manage and make people stars and get them ready for further opportunities, he didnt know the money side of it, i was so sad when they voted him out😔
it seems to me like these Mama's we're only interested in getting paid and not worrying about what was best for the kids that was my take on this thing I know they were talking about not wanting to get screwed over but the only thing I have the Mama saying this why aren't we getting paid that's a red flag
Of course that's what it was. Brooke and his siste/Ronnie's mother were the only two that cared about the boys and what was best for them. The other 4 moms only cared about getting paid
Exactly money cant buy everything why didn't the moms have a back up plan or side hustles it seems like they thought their sons owed them a better life where were there dads at they were suppose to provide
They were desperate because they lived in the projects. Their sons were talented and found a way to get them some money and they just took it without knowing any of the repercussions that came with it.
Recoupable are real. The best way to prevent these situations is to gain as much knowledge as you can about how the business works. Unfortunately they didn't have the internet(as it is now) back then. They could have watched some TH-cam videos first.
Phase Vi believe me, a lot of artists had opportunity to either have lawyers to read those contracts first, or took the time educate themselves and read before being hasty to sign. some ppl are lazy or just trust anybody to handle their business. there were plenty ppl that didn't get jerked in those days, and there were no internet. but they seemed to come out un-scathed.
+ThankTheLord No,sir. If the record label doesn't get you the entertainment lawyer you sign with will. The game has not changed. If you want a record deal you will have to sign your rights away. period.
They NEVER got that Money back from Candy Girl. They toured again in Early 1984 to recoupe, but they NEVER saw a dime from Streetwise. Starr completely RIPPED them off and shut the label down when the feds came knocking.
The is the VERY BEST biopic if all time! It's my favorite biopic of my time, too! Damn, I couldn't believe how little New Edition got paid. I love how stories like this are told of what happens in the music business, no matter how good the talent is. The New Edition Story definitely was the best at story telling & the biopic was life that imitated art REALLY WELL! Shoutout to New Edition coaching these talent of actors & the younger actors as well! People who are trying to be the next actors on the way (including me lol), it's never too late to pursue your dreams! Be like Mary Mary, "Go get it, because it's your time, and clocks don't stop and time won't wait!"
BET should do an Aaliyah biopic! It's long overdue and someone definitely needs to dedicate the resources and time to making an awesome movie about her life. BET has such a long history with both her and her music so it would be perfect
Well her uncle owns the rights to her music and her family owns the right to her image. I think with the lifetime movie both her uncle and family weren't on board and didn't support the making of the movie thus not signing anything for use. I think if BET took up an Aaliyah project they would defintly dedicate the money and time unlike lifetime did and I think her family would have no problem backing it.
I think Brook needed to get voted out for Bobby.. if Brook had stayed in charge Bobby would have never been kicked out the group..Brook would have never went for that..Brook ran a tight ship and NE would have never act like that at all...
It wasn't Brook's fault, the parents were the ones who only heard "money" when Maurice came over with the contracts. They signed on the dotted line, without reading the contracts and knowing very little about the music industry. Streetwise loaned them money in the form of an advance. They used that to pay for promotion, studio time and tour costs, along with other expenses possibly personal. The money isn't free, after the album came out and the sales started flowing, that's when the recoupable expenses start happening. New Edition had to do things like touring, appearances, and advertising to pay for the expenses along with the album sales. That was on them, not Brook. Brook also got robbed in the deal too being their manager and all considering he got paid very little too.
Streetwise did have a single DAMN Loan. They gave the Group a measly $500 Advance( $1,800 today Which was pathetic and sleazy EVEN in 1982) and started skimming on all residuals,Likeness and profits made from Performances and Touring, The Recoupables were just a red herring, Starr knew the Group was going to be getting absolutely NO money from the LP. He and his Buddy were flowing it back into their own pockets. Even if they toured again to make back the Recoupable Expenses, that $1,500 that Streetwise owed NE was NEVER coming back. Before The Mothers SUED Streetwise, the label mysteriously folded up taking all of its unreported profits and ROE with them. Starr is a CROOK. A SNAKE. With Gary Evans of Flighttime Productions, it was a bit different. Yes, Evans under the Guise of Jehri Busby and MCA Records STILL were charging the Recoupable Expenses, but he gave New Edition a Solid $2,000 Advance($4,800 in 2022 Dollars) PLUS assured a 5% cut on all sales of their 2nd and 3rd LP, the Mothers expected to see large Revenue and Net Profit, but in '85 were disappointed to find that the boys were only WELL OFF making about $9,000($18,000 today). But when New Edition were told what MCA and Flighttime's Projections were for FY 1985, they were informed that they were going to have to tour extensively and do a COVER LP, it was clear that they weren't going to be exactly wealthy. After talking the boys into firing Bobby Brown in October 1985, Busby talked him into going Solo and he released "King of Stage" in the Fall of 1986. After the Cover LP was released in Early 1986, NE took a two year hiatus, we discover in that, Ralph was toying with the idea of going solo, but Busby informed him that they wanted to bring in a new member to replace Bobby who had just been signed to MCA in '86, after being dropped from Chrysalis Records, 19 year old D.C. native Johnny Gill. When Bobby hooked up with Babyface and L.A. Reid, he finally got the courage to fire Gary Evans and leave Flighttime, New Edition followed suit in '87 when they hooked up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. In June of 1988, N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel, finally became the Multi Platinum Gold Mine LPs that FINALLY assured NE and Brown that they would amass LARGE Revenue and a GIANT 40% cut on sales and royalties, first of all, MCA gave both NE and Bobby Brown a large $500k($1.4 million today) advance check each meaning, they were going to be receiving a WEALTHY advancement check. It took 5 years, but they were FINALLY making large money. All told, by 1989, N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel had made around $5 Million in Sales. Meaning, each earned back $2.1 Million in Net Profits($5.6 million today). They were Millionaires by '89.
At the time, they were only doing a 3 song set as an opening act. In 1983 dollars, they could have been paid $1,000, maybe $1,500, per set. They did maybe 20 or 25 dates. Grossing maybe $35,000. Out of that, the label had to recuperate every dollar spent on recording, artist development, promotion....... and the cost of the tour. They even had to pay back the $500 advance and the BetaMax machines. The bus cost money. The hotel rooms cost money. Security cost money. The boys got a per diem. Costumes and 1 hour dry cleaning in every city cost money. Management probably took $10,000 off the top, with a contract in management's favor. They owed taxes. The Kids were lucky that they didn't come back from the tour, owing money to The Label. Bands could go out on the road doing arena tours at $100,000 a show. They do 25 shows and gross $2.5 million. Only to get a bill, with itemized accounting, saying that it cost the label $5 million, and that the band owes the label $2.5 million. Well, there goes their sales and future royalties.
All of their mother's were only concerned with themselves. They didn't even acknowledge that Brooke made sacrifices for those young men as well. Ronnie's mother was the only one that had any sense.
Maurice Starr and Streetwise Records they ripped them boys off and also what’s messed up is that their parents took everything out on Brooke Payne and that wasn’t right at all and most importantly they should’ve never signed those contracts without consulting with a lawyer first.
I mean, Brooke was explaining it very well. The label gave them a loan and they had to pay back the expenses before they got paid. When all is said and done, whatever amount is left goes to the group members. The problem is that the writers of the contract can choose how much they take, and that leads to some slimey business moves.
if you wanna get into the music /entertainment business you gotta know both ends of it the entertainment part and the business part you gotta know what people to choose to handle the business affairs as well as the entertainment side
The music/entertaiment business it’s it’s very sneaky & Conniving! You must have a lot of knowledge about the music business learn how to read and disect contracts before you sign & make a commitment or Like Prince said “you will be a slave to your contract” New Edition and their mothers had no knowledge of contracts and music business for that Reason NE were Ripped off early in their musical careers!
Rachael Baynes haha I wonder if the moms ever talked after Bobby was voted out the group. in the movie it didn't seem so, but also they didn't keep up with the moms after that scene where she was trying to call all the other moms.
Lets be real, it was the early 80s and if anyone was offering you a record deal, you took it. Things were not as known as they are today. If you weren't in the biz you probably didn't know the exact differences in a producer, choreographer, or manager.
Agreed 100% but then if you have half a brain your next move will be to go on a research because your child is involved but Nooo all Bobby's mum wanted was for other people to do the work while she just sits back and cash in and blame everybody else when things go wrong
Everyone angry at Brook. They forgetting that he didn’t get paid his 10 percent as a manager! His management fee was apart of that money too lol and he was using money out of his own pocket for 6 years to help the group. EVERYBODY got played! And he never even complained about his share.
I understand Brooke doesn't manage the money but as a manager you should got a lawyer involve to read those contracts since he didn't get paid either. The mothers shouldn't be mad at Brooke they all should be mad at themselves because this could of been preventative if they hire a lawyer or read say let my lawyer go over this and I will get back to you about that next day
Laila Jean Yu that's the scariest thing about signing when you are broke. Lawyers are expensive and there is no way to know for sure that the deal will go through after you spend all that money. It's a hard decision for single mothers, some of which, on welfare.
That's true. IDK if they did it like that back then, especially ones with entertainment and licensing understanding. You do have to chalk some of it up to a lack of knowledge and bad decisions but it is what it is. i talk about it on my channel all the time. Cats gotta learn the game.
I know Brooks is looking at Carol thinking this is not the wire you do not have to be talking to me like this I swear her character on the wire and on here are the same person
It's TRUE!!! That's New Edition first paycheck. They worked their behinds off in three year world tour for a $1.87. Out of that world tour NE should be multi-millionaires. Blame Maurice Starr! Don't blame Brooke. He's just their dance coordinator.
Streetwise did have a single DAMN Loan. With Gary Evans/Bill Dern of Flighttime Productions/Jump N Shoot, it was a bit different. It makes me so sad & upset how they got ripped off! Including Brook! They took advantage of them as little kids & knowing Brook doesn’t know anything about the Industry. It’s easy to say they should have gotten a lawyer etc but everything happened so fast & they trust that they put in work they will see money unfortunately they were did nasty smfh
They should have had a business manager along with a manager as well as a lawyer to read the contract they all signed.Remember nothing is free even today in 2021 hotels, flights, tour bus, record company's cut, food, clothes, studio time, producers, promotion... etc. after expenses are Paid Then You Get Paid.
I see where bobby gets that attitude from and it's not brooks fault he had no control over the money it's the moms fault for not reading the damm contract always read the contract people people are shady as hell in that business and it hard to trust people but he had there best interest and he loved and cared for them the moms were just angry because they had no money and they weren't thinking clearly
Before they start jumping up so quick and signed off contracts, they should have gotten themselves a good attorney. Same thing happened to TLC and Toni braxton.
The fact that they think “they should be gettin rich off those kids” is the problem. They should be worried about their sons getting rich not what their greedy asses can make off them. Although new editions contract was bullshit but still
As Pretty Boy Floyd sung, "As through this world I've wandered, I've seen lots of funny men; some will rob you with a six-gun, and some with a fountain pen."
Man I hated how they skipped how they went from Streetwize to Jump & Shoot. The parents didnt just "find Gary" aka Bill Dern. Jump & Shoot were the lawyers that helped NE sue Maurice Starr for their name.
God works in mysterious ways. Had those young men had access to all that money at that time, there is no telling what they would have gotten into and who would have attached themselves to them pretending to be real friends, concerned and loving family, loyal girlfriends ect... When everybody figured things weren't working out I'm sure a lot of those leaches showed their hand and dropped off. Now they are very well known in the business and can tour anytime they like with a loyal fan base and a great catalog of music.
They made NO money during Candy Girl. Nada. Starr completely swindled them. They DID make money during New Edition '84, and All For Love and Earth Angel, but it was just Solid and they were just well off as well as Bobby with King of Stage in '86. It wasn't until 1988 with N.E. Heartbreak and Don't Be Cruel when they REALLY begin to rake in the Big Bucks.
Yvette Nicole Brown needs to get more dramatic roles in her career. This mini-series shows a small portion of her potential and plus this biopic feels more like something HBO would distribute!
There was something about Bobby's mother that I really didn't like and I couldn't put my finger on it. And then I realized that she was Namond's mother from The Wire.
I can't be the only who thought this was funny. I mean how shady do you have to be to give someone a check for $1.87. Maybe I'm just heartless, but the moment I read the price for that check, I died!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm lovin this look back on some Legends I grew up to. This particular scene, though I don't know how true or if it really went down exactly like that, I love how they had Wood Harris (Brooke) play it all out relaxed and calm. Probably knowing how it was all going to play out. I've been in situations like that myself, where someone or people are yelling and I'm like the only calm head on the scene. That coulda got "real ugly" specially sense money was involved, yet he remained calm among those ladies. I particularly loved how he told his sister, naaa, you not pullin my nephew, don't let this "negative" take his "positive" away no matter what it's done to "him" and walked on away from that messy situation. Ol Wood Harris is a Vet! #avonbarksdale
the only true crime would be if profits were made after expenses, and were not correctly distributed after the label recouped their investments, happens all the time, ask any artist who's ever worked with birdman.....
Naw it wasn't $500 a piece, it was a SINGLE $500 Advancement Check that they all had to split. Even in 1982, a $500 Advancement Check was absolutely Pathetic. New Edition DID Tour again in Early '84 to recoupe the money they owed for Candy Girl, but that $1,500 That was owed to them, NEVER showed up. The Check for the Recoupable Tour was just $25. Basically, New Edition made Candy Girl for FREE. They didn't make a single penny from it. Nothing. They were completely SCAMMED and swindled by Maurice Starr.
plus the BETA MAX !!! they took another L with that !! Beta Max lost out to the VHS in the vcr wars .. so they got stuck with a machine that was doomed from the giddy up !!!
steve johnson I agree to some extent but remember these are project women living off some government help. in 1981, $500 was like $3,000 today. their rent probably was $100 a month if that much.
Ironic how Bobby's mother called for a vote to fire Brooke as manager, then Bobby got voted out of the group.
Periclis Dragonballz I said the same thing, I was like I see why he act the way he does because of his momma lol
But see it was a blessing Bobby got voted out of the group because Bobby became the most famous one up until today Bobby is more famous than new edition.
+Blandina Malinzi exactly
so i see wht bobby was so self-centered
so i see why bobby act like so spoiled
It was easier to accuse Brook about the money situation, when all of the moms were in a room allowing their sons to sign a contract without reading it first
That's where it started with a lot of groups. Always read the contract first
I said the same thing. Why wasnt Brooke in the room with them signing those contracts
Thats the problem. He's the manager. He should've been there.
THIS
They were greedy lowkey all they saw was we can money off our kids, they still turned out Great they just had to be broke for a while
It is unbelievable of how they accused Brooke of being Shady and they decided to higher the white man thinking he would've been the better fit and he's the one that does them dirty. These mothers were just interested in fast money and were desperate to live off their sons and see them as their ticket out.

It just goes to show he wasn't in it for the money, you can really tell he is a humble dude, because he STILL has their backs to this very day, which says A LOT about his character....
Actually back then a pack skittles was about 10 cent
In the 80s it would have gotten him at least a pack of bubble gum, if he borrowed 2 pennies! Then he'd have to borrow another couple of cents for tax, unless he lived in a state which didn't charge tax on consumable items other than service goods.
The fact Brooke came back to help them again shows he's genuine, many would have said go to hell
Sound like a crackhead get pay to get high just music business rip those artist off
New Edition, TLC, Toni Braxton.....Read your Contracts.. Prince said it best "record contracts are like slavery"
virtuous woman. To be Fair Prince was a rare artist..most artist have to prove themselves
Prince also learned his lesson the hard way. He was cheated.
they did brooke dirty
QUEEN FALASHA JUDAH ikr
i have a feeling that if they didn't fire brooke then they woulda got way more money
Britloves Quincy so true thats the problem with our ppl we never trust our own ppl but quick to trust the other man9
Britloves Quincy I totally agree
GeeOhDee Three6ixFive The group members had been broke for years. It was very sad the Management took advantage of them they didn't know anything about the industry they were so young. Rule number one in the entertainment industry: READ YOUR CONTRACT AND HAVE A LAWYER GO OVER IT!!!!!!
And don’t use the company lawyer. Get your own lawyer people
Yeah I will have manger and a lawyer
That doesn’t solve everything
It doesn’t look like they could afford one you see where they live
Brooke _always_ had the group's best interest. Everybody was too blind to see Gary was only in it for the $$$. Keep a squeaky clean image while I rob the most of y'all out your money. He wasn't shit.
David Richardson You mean Maurice Starr.
ComicPhreak Him too.
David Richardson vinous 7q
David Richardson Looks like Gary and Maurice got the on a production deal and redirected the bread. That recoupable situation is real. Not as bad these days but real back then.
David Richardson plus he was the one of the only positive male figure they had as kids
BROOKE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH WHY THE GROUP ONLY RECEIVED JUST $1.87
Thank u. That's the same thing I said.
Myc'kala Ross I 100% agree
Brooke loved them with all his heart. He would've never done them dirty. Now Gary & Maurice Starr on the other hand they definitely had no problem with doing N.E wrong Brooke was the best
I agree. A manager is like a life partner. You gotta like each other to really win. I'm glad they were able to keep him involved though.
I am to. I'm really glad he survived that heart attack.
Bottom line is Bobby Brown and his mama hard headed. Lol smh
That explains where Bobby got it from.
i see why bobby so self-centered
No other way to say it
@@Phenique35 Thank you
he explained the sacrifices he made and they still voted him out and they didn't have to agree with Bobby's mom
Exactly
I agree
Because you had a room full of women making decisions
When she said the second "raise your hand", as well as the stare, it kinda looked and felt like she was COMMANDING the other moms to raise their hands.
Edit: after watching the movie, I COMPLETELY get behind the other mothers turning their backs on her after Bobby got fired from the group (and trash talking her too).

2 Things Need To Addressed...
#1. Read The Contract Throughly With A Dictionary On Standby For Clear Reference And/Or Seek Legal Advice For Business Clarifications To Understand Farther Obligations And Their Standpoint Of Representation
#2. Nothing Is Free In The Entertainment Industry. The Hotels, Food, Clothes, Studio Time, Producers, etc.
After The Expenses Are Paids, Then You Get Paid.
Ex. Same shit happen with TLC when they sign with Pebbles and All 3 members were broke
Brooke Payne Didn't Have Nothing To Do With Maurice Starr Business Practices, because its technically legal
Khiry Johnson got to be learn business wise read and sign contract before you get into music business
Khiry Johnson Exactly I feel like anyone who is thinking gettinf into the business needs a lawyer present to negotiate and get clarifications about their contract.
Don't forget about NWA, Backstreet Boys and Nsync
DJBlack909 You're absolutely right, I almost forgot about N.W.A
Thank you
DJBlack909 back street boys and *NSYNC what happened with them?
Lala did her thing! I'm happy to see all of these black queens 👸🏾
K. White was Lala in the lst half of the movie?
Derrick Nichols I love me some new edition they are my men
This was the one thing I seen Lala in that really showed her acting skills
YES SHE DID!!!
RIIIIGHT they was SOOOO quick to jump down Brooks throat but it wasn't even his fault but they was so mfn money hungry
They really wanted out of them projects.
Yup, Brooke was the only one who cared about them
Facts brook didn’t even control the money he was the only manager who didn’t care about the money they only wanted them in the group to make money
Exactly but they learned they lesson cause even after they got rid of Brooke they were still broke. Proving that he was never the problem. And then on top of that they hired a new manager who was actually stealing from them for years. That’s sad as hell.
It was mainly Carol that didn’t want to listen.
This is the Best BET Has Been Since Video Soul
The morale of the lesson here is nothing is not free in life in the entertainment business.
Laila Jean Yu nothing at all. It's all recoupable. You really gotta pay attention out here. This was an easy situation to avoid
Exactly Nothing Is Free😑😑
Brook was never the problem
@@pianotnt I think one if the moms was a single mom.
They were desperate because they lived in the projects. Their sons were talented and found a way to get them some money and they just took it without knowing any of the repercussions that came with it.
That zoom in effect.
lol
Letago Modiba lol
Letago Modiba 😂😂😂😂
1 year later and that zoom in effect is still awesome!
Letago Modiba "how the hell you let this happen!? I didn't let nothing happen" lol
I get a check for $1.87 after the hard work I did, somebody gettin shot that day lol
LJ808 😂😂😂
LJ808 reading your comment then looking at your pic!😂 your Facial expressions Total match your reads!!!
LOL!!!!
LJ808 🤣🤣🤣
Mike said that Bobby said something similar to that when he found out about their paycheck.
I wish they didn't fire him he looked out for all of them
The same mama who wanted the manager to be kicked to the curb, ended up having her son kicked out the group. How that work out 🤦🏾
I ❤️ how floe was the only one who was defending Brooke because that's her brother
Because it's New Edition themselves telling the story and nobody else. Plus, they produced it executively
They got Brook looking like David Ruffin
Keah Harrison lmfaoooo
Agreed.
I said the same thing.
Lala was right. They should have blamed the label & not Brooke
BET should do an Aaliyah biopic! It's long overdue and someone definitely needs to dedicate the resources and time to making an awesome movie about her life. BET has such a long history with both her and her music so it would be perfect
AaliyahInHD They need to have the family sign over the rights to the songs. I heard that for the lifetime movie, they refused to sign anything over.
AaliyahInHD Sorry to respond so very late but Lifetime had already done it a few years ago
But it was awful.
AaliyahInHD
Tinashe should play Aaliyah if BET was to do a biopic on Aaliyah
Everybody in those families gave that man that heart attack
This is why you need a Joe Jackson. He made sure his kids got paid
Joe is a og
Just make sure he doesn't beat them nearly to death along the way
@@j.i.r608 he didn’t beat them to death. He disciplined his children the same way everyone else did during that era.
Never forget, SpongeBob got sold for 62 cents
😂😂😂😂😂
did yall noticed new edition voted Bobby out the same way, head down one finger up.
All marketing and promotion for album sales radios airplay touring support
They were supposed to get $1,500 in Net Earnings. Maurice Starr never paid them a Dime.
All of their mother's were only concerned with themselves. They didn't even acknowledge that Brooke made sacrifices for those young men as well. Ronnie's mother was the only one that had any sense.
Only cared about the money not being in their pockets. He was making the same amount as the boys and still bought what they needed.
And as for Ms Brown she should blame the record label not Brooke
I literally just cried when I read they tried to pay them that for all their work.
it's all fun and games until u bring in the white guy.
Facts
Brooke's reaction before Bobby mother started going in is Priceless Lol, it's the funniest part of the whole scene...
Just like prince learn himself business without the company rip those artistry freedom
if you wanna get into the music /entertainment business you gotta know both ends of it the entertainment part and the business part you gotta know what people to choose to handle the business affairs as well as the entertainment side
Easier said than done. The industry is designed like a maze to confuse not only artists but lawyers as well.
The music/entertaiment business it’s it’s very sneaky & Conniving! You must have a lot of knowledge about the music business learn how to read and disect contracts before you sign & make a commitment or Like Prince said “you will be a slave to your contract”
New Edition and their mothers had no knowledge of contracts and music business for that Reason NE were Ripped off early in their musical careers!
Man this movie is sweeter than some diabetes lemon aid. Thanks B.E.T.
Bobby's mother said we'd thank her one day. bitch please.I bet they didn't thank her😂
Rachael Baynes haha I wonder if the moms ever talked after Bobby was voted out the group. in the movie it didn't seem so, but also they didn't keep up with the moms after that scene where she was trying to call all the other moms.
When she said Ralph worked really hard and they all got mad😂😂
For What!
Cause Ralph will always be the leader 🤫
Phase Vi It's really not my aunt was on welfare she got a lawyer. They do free consultation to look over the contract
Laila Jean Yu this was a long time ago
That's true. IDK if they did it like that back then, especially ones with entertainment and licensing understanding. You do have to chalk some of it up to a lack of knowledge and bad decisions but it is what it is. i talk about it on my channel all the time. Cats gotta learn the game.
Were talking about 1981. They didn't have legal aid back then. lol.
They did Brook so dirty.
Bottom line--read your contract, folks!
Great movie but that's how record company's are, now we NEED to see one about EN VOGUE
Yes Exactly!
I know Brooks is looking at Carol thinking this is not the wire you do not have to be talking to me like this I swear her character on the wire and on here are the same person
Weebay bouta call the crib and let her know somethin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Darrian2021 i said the same thing!!!!!
Darrian2021 they should've cast Weebay to be her boyfriend or something lol
LOL he could've put her in check
Reading is fundamental.
Is the woman with the floral shirt on Ebony from the Players Club???
Yes
MissTia777 yes
and she's Mia from the best man. her name is Monica Calhoun. very talented actress
@Emontre waters and New Edition was inspired by the Jackson 5.
It's TRUE!!! That's New Edition first paycheck. They worked their behinds off in three year world tour for a $1.87. Out of that world tour NE should be multi-millionaires. Blame Maurice Starr! Don't blame Brooke. He's just their dance coordinator.
Starr is a producer he aint got to do with it thats the record company
@@oholm09 He ran Streetwise Records. Which was SKIMMING Money from New Edition, particularly advances and residuals on Candy Girl.

And as for Bobby’s mother Carole after she had learn about the $18.7 check she should have blame the record label, not Brooke.
all artists know if you spend money before you make it you have to pay it back
Sell their soul
Brook had nothing to do with the $1.87 they should have read the contract but that is what greed and desperation does
It makes me so sad & upset how they got ripped off! Including Brook! They took advantage of them as little kids & knowing Brook doesn’t know anything about the Industry. It’s easy to say they should have gotten a lawyer etc but everything happened so fast & they trust that they put in work they will see money unfortunately they were did nasty smfh
The number one thing you always do before signing a contract is read the fine print
Yeah! Tell it like is Brooke!
damn, thats fucked up for tjem to even gove somebody a check for $1.87!
Kay Cash stupid whack. They did better than a lot of artist at the time. Some were in complete debt
so they supposed to work hard and nothing to show for it
Brooke was also the manager of the R&B group 9.9
They should have had a business manager along with a manager as well as a lawyer to read the contract they all signed.Remember nothing is free even today in 2021 hotels, flights, tour bus, record company's cut, food, clothes, studio time, producers, promotion... etc. after expenses are Paid Then You Get Paid.
He STILL NEVER paid them their Cut. Starr RIPPED them off.
I see where bobby gets that attitude from and it's not brooks fault he had no control over the money it's the moms fault for not reading the damm contract always read the contract people people are shady as hell in that business and it hard to trust people but he had there best interest and he loved and cared for them the moms were just angry because they had no money and they weren't thinking clearly
so i see why bobby so spoiled
Before they start jumping up so quick and signed off contracts, they should have gotten themselves a good attorney. Same thing happened to TLC and Toni braxton.
yeah its wasn't Brooke's fault , And that's not right they just gonna fire him for nothing
This what happens when you don't read the contract you will get bad results.
One of the best music movie since the temptations
is that ace boogie playing Brooke?
Yes it is
Avon Barksdale
His real name wood harris
Sam Brooks Bobby Brown/Namond Brice’s mother always asking for more money from a Barksdalr
Naw that's Avon arguin with DerLonda 🤣
The fact that they think “they should be gettin rich off those kids” is the problem. They should be worried about their sons getting rich not what their greedy asses can make off them. Although new editions contract was bullshit but still
"Ralph worked really hard!"- LMAO!!!!
As Pretty Boy Floyd sung,
"As through this world I've wandered, I've seen lots of funny men;
some will rob you with a six-gun, and some with a fountain pen."
They really fired him and he wasn’t even getting paid fr. He was working for new edition out of the love of his heart.
Its too bad the mothers didn't know how to read.
0:13-0:17 when tired of hearing da bull💩
500 and a beta max?
Dammnit man, now that's Gangsta!!!!

Brooke really care about them they thought they did the right thing fired Brooke because he told them the truth
Damn😥....this made me cry
Yvette Nicole Brown needs to get more dramatic roles in her career. This mini-series shows a small portion of her potential and plus this biopic feels more like something HBO would distribute!
imagine if Johnny Gill was in the group at dat time and his moms was in da same room
brought back so many memories💕
I'm Really Enjoying Watching This Film!📽️📹🎥😘💋💙💚💜🧡🙌🏽👏🏽😄😄
There was something about Bobby's mother that I really didn't like and I couldn't put my finger on it. And then I realized that she was Namond's mother from The Wire.
She’s always needing more money. Asking Breanna Barksdale for more money, asking Wood Harris for more money.
*1.87 DAMN TLC AIN'T GET NO MONEY AT LEAST NEW EDITION GOT PAID LMAO*
Damn, he telling them what happened to the money but they don’t wanna listen
what the hell they gonna do with $1.87. seriously
They should have just took Maurice out the picture and kept Brook
They retoured in Early 1984 and THEN fired Maurice once they got back only $25.
0:57 they wanted there kids money
the only true crime would be if profits were made after expenses, and were not correctly distributed after the label recouped their investments, happens all the time, ask any artist who's ever worked with birdman.....
they was so cruel though off that 500 a piece 😂😂
Blame big worm lol
KraceeSteez right, he was the first one to open the door to the fuckery of getting played.
Haha all this time I was trying to figure out what movie he was from 😅😂
For the record, Each member of the group is said to have made a measly $1.87 in royalties for their debut album
They sell their soul to music industry its a bad business
$1.87...... 1-8-7?? Get it???? were they trying to be funny???

steve johnson well BACK then that was a lot of money
plus the BETA MAX !!! they took another L with that !!
