This should be in the Smithsonian. Audio mix is excellent, beautifully filmed in the tech of the day. and Maestro Freddie holding court.

Saw Freddie at Ronnie Scott’s in the 1980s. Absolutely blew me away! One of the (many!) things I loved about Freddie's playing was that it is real 'balls to the wall', not remotely trying to be polite! Like Coltrane he was no 'lounge' musician - he really bared his soul! ❤

Perfectly stated, balls to the wall, soul baring. I’m trying to push a trumpeter friend of mine into that kind of fiery playing.

85’ the year I first moved to NYC…. And this video reminds of just how much great playing was going on at that time on the New York jazz scene …. These gentlemen were part of it and you could go out any night of the week and hear music played at this level…. Besides the Vanguard there were a lot of places that had this type of real jazz going with bands led by masters like Freddie Hubbard…….virtually all of those real stars that came up through the ranks like Freddie ,Diz, Cedar Walton, Woody Shaw etc. etc.. are gone now and the scene has suffered …..most people don’t get what jazz really is …. this video is a great example …..no Bullshit ..,just inspired playing that hasn’t lost that element of swing and blues that elevates the best jazz performances…..

I played with Freddie at this time as well, on one special occasion in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I sat next to Kenny in Marcus Belgrave's New Detroit Jazz Ensemble, playing 2nd alto to his first (mainly tenor player here).

So honored to have played this song with Freddie. I worked with him twice, and jammed with him once. He's the most UNBELIEVABLE trumpeter that I've ever seen or heard. He could HYPNOTIZE you so deeply, that you would forget to solo when he was finished. He had a BEAUTIFUL SOUL, indeed. 🙏🏼

It's interesting to hear him play Misty in 1985, after recording it on "Sweet Return" (Atlantic, 1983). He's in rare form and I can see why Kenny Garrett joined him. Their flugelhorn/flute duo is magnificent! Carl Allen is on happy drummer, rhythmic and smiling all the time!

Freddie’s first solo right at the top is so burning it’s ridiculous. Freddy’s all in And with a Clean double high C right near the end, you can tell he was happy with that one. It’s a great feeling. And you share it with him.

Freddie Hubbard was THE overlord of jazz trumpet!
But the most beautiful thing is that he remained a fan and a servant of the music, as evidenced by him bringing out to join him one of his foremost musical influences Dizzy Gillespie, and one of the most masterful cats to emerge from Freddie’s own influence - Woody Shaw.

Freddie was the greatest!!! He had everything that Clifford, Lee, and others had times a thousand!! There were plenty greats - Diz, Maggs, Fats, Miles, Brownie, Dr. Byrd, but Freddie surpassed them all in terms of what he was able to pull off on the trumpet.
I may like Miles a little bit more, but even I gotta admit Miles could not pull off those explosive death defying runs and insane lip trills that Freddie could!
