What a lovely analysis of a phenomenal vocalist.
I never heard of Leslie Odom jr. until I watched "One Night in Miami" last night. I was already engulfed in emotion from our black men's stellar acting, and how I, as a woman, got to peek in on the inner hearts of men, and the commemoration of the powerful voices that came out of our people. Then the typed words announced, "Malcolm was shot 2 days later".....and a song begins, and not only were the lyrics poignant, but the voice that came through pierced my soul through. I've been overindulging on Leslie Odom videos since then. 😄
okay so this is my favorite video to listen to over and over and I am so happy to see someone soooo excited of his vocal choices like I was when I first watched it. Thank you. It was brilliant to watch!
This is one of my favorite all time songs and Leslie brings this song into the stratosphere. No idea what planet he comes from though. Probably Krypton.

You should throw the big words you say up on the screen with definitions . Cuz I swear I’ve never heard of a tessituta before. I think a word of the day type deal would be cute. . . All that to say I love your content & how passionate & innately knowledgeable you are. It’s fun to watch.
lol tessitura is the range of the notes. A high tessitura means that most or all the notes are high.
Tessitura is just one’s comfortable range to sing in. The overall range is every note you can sing or hit, but the tessitura only contains the note you can sing comfortably. Hope that helps!!

Thank you so much for this analysis. I knew I loved Leslie Odoms voice I just didnt have the language or understanding to articulate WHY! Now I can appreciate his vocal prowess even more. Any idea if and where he was classically trained? Superb vid!
I am obsessed with him. Every since I heard him sing at the White House Obama farewell. His talent is unmatched and underrated. Outside of Hamilton he has not gotten the fanfare that he should.

I innocently emailed a choreographer of a show I saw a couple of years ago to say how much I loved his work, completely forgetting the name thing...he emailed back SO elated to hear from such a legend in the biz!! Was tempted to keep quiet but thought better of it and broke the mundane news to him... He thought it was hilarious...thankfully!

So happy to see this video. Since I first saw this Lincoln Center performance on PBS I have been blown away but his voice. And his time on the shortly lived show, "Smash". This especially was one of my favorites from the concert. Not only is his control amazing but he really knows how to tell a story.
I am so glad to see his career blossoming now with "One Night in Miami"!

I was addicted to his album in 2016 with Autumn Leaves at the top of my list. I wasn't even interested in Hamilton until I found out that he was in it. He doesn't get nearly enough recognition for talent. I'm Sooooo glad to see this video 😍😍😍😍. I love your breakdown of this song, and your reaction. Thanks again for this amazing content!

Leslie is my FAVORITE. I love him. He is so subtle. Listen to his whole catalogue but on his Mr. album listen to Standards he sung DOWN. He’s literally my best friend in my head lol. Also check out his wife Nicolette Robinson she’s my absolute FAVORITE !

I just found that album last week and I keep changing my mind on which one's my favorite. First it was Hummingbird, then Stronger Magic, then Standards, and now it's Under Pressure 😂
