Dresden has been the capital of Saxony (Upper Saxony) since the early 15th century. Back then, it took over from the city of Meissen as the capital in the Margraviate of Meissen, whose rulers had been enfeoffed by the Holy Roman Emperor (Kaiser) with the vacant Saxon ducal and electoral titles and hence became the Duchy and Electorate of Saxony. After the dissolution of the HRE during the Napoleonic Wars, they were elevated to kingship and thus Dresden ("Florence of the Elbe") became the capital of the Kingdom of Saxony (until 1918, now a federal state).
