    Eliminate a few steps... zero the caliper after you set it to the width of the first pass dado cut, then when you use the caliper to measure the material thickness that will go into the dodo, the display of the caliper will show the difference - without using a calculator. Then adjust the router guide fence by this amount... plus some glue allowance.

    I'm used to larger, corded routers th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

    My buddy teases me all the time because I order plans in metric dimensions. And when I build a piece using his plans. They are in standard. But I find metric is easier and I get better results precision wise using metric.

    So you are converting imperial inches into a decimal form of inches in order to make a calculation that would be impossible without the help of the decimal conversion. Once you have finished the decimal calculation you are converting back to imperial inches.
    This may seem like a silly question but wouldn't this be incredibly easy just to it all in metric mm???
    P.S Yes I know that the micro fence is imperial so you are stuck. But surely this example shows how making a move towards metric would make so much sense.

    You got the dado the right size but is it where you want it ? When you increase the width by roughly 1/4 inch didn't you do it all on one side ? You moved the center line of the dado by about 1/8 inch? Don't know if that makes any difference in this case or not.

      Jeff Harmed so if a slot with the grain is a groove and across the grain a dado, when would I use a plough plane? Would the slot/groove then be called a plough but change again to a rabbet when on the edge? Why not just call it a slot regardless of where the grain is?

    I've used this technique for a while now, and had a question regarding router safety. When making the first dado, should one be pulling the router to them or pushing away from themselves?
    I know for subsequent cuts, you should ALWAYS use conventional cutting and not climb cutting. But I'm not sure about that first one.

    At 3:10, you measured the width of the dado at 0.49" (essentially 0.50"). You mentioned that you are using a 1/2" bit.
    Doesn't the bit size correspond to the diameter of the shank?
    If that is true, then how could the width of the dado also be 1/2" wide? I thought it would be wider than 1/2" due to the width of the bit.

    • @Wwgoa
      @Wwgoa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Great question. I have submitted it to our woodworking experts. Please allow 1-2 business days for their response. We will post that here. Thanks!

    • @Wwgoa
      @Wwgoa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both measurements are important. 1/2" can refer to the size of the shank, and/or the size the the dado/groove that will be produced by the bit, referred to as the cutting diameter. In this case, the bit was both 1/2" shank as well as a 1/2" cutting diameter.

    That does answer a lot question about the thickness of wood and bit size.
    I have a question here. Bosch has there own, micro edge guide. And your using a the
    Micro Fence guide. Is it that much better ? The Micro Fence is About $100 on Amazon, Up to $400. So is it that much better, that is a lot of money. I know the M.F. " Micro Fence" will fit most routers.
    But I have a ROUTER 1611 EVS with the older version micro guide 1052. They make a newer version 1054 and I have heard that it is very good. Bosch micro edge guide runs about $35 on line Home Depot. Would I be better to up grade or just keep what I have ?
    And if you do suggest to upgrade , up grade to what ?

    • @Wwgoa
      @Wwgoa  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William Wynn The choice here comes down to how much precision you require. If your current setup is working for your requirements, then I wouldn't encourage you to run out and upgrade. If you start to run into limitations, then perhaps it is time to explore. The MicroFence is great and delivers outstanding precision for even the most demanding applications. I don't have direct experience with either of the Bosch guides that you are describing, but in looking on line at the 1054 it looks to be a well made unit. I don't if you can expect the same level of accuracy as you would see with the MF, but I would expect good quality in general from Bosch based on my experience with other Bosch products that I use.

    Nice trick. Why did you cut in the wrong direction on the first pass with the router? I know you supposed to always go in the direction of the spinning bit. Was there a reason for that?

    • @Wwgoa
      @Wwgoa  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. For edge treatments, you always want to move the router such that the feed direction opposes the cutter direction. On the first pass of a dado the bit is cutting on all sides simultaneously, so feed direction doesn't matter.
      Thanks

    • @BeaulieuTodd

      I've never worked with that guide, but if it fits, go for it. If the reach is sufficient you could simply adjust it and repeat the process to create an additional dado. In woodworking there are many ways of doing every task. Experimenting and looking for techniques that provide CONSISTENT quality results is key.

      You can make it as big as you want and as complicated as you want. All you really need is two straight boards and four clamps. With these, you can cut the dado the right size first time, there is no measuring or calculations and you can do it in less than half the time that it is done here.

  • @brentnicol6391

    Why so difficult. Firstly it is in inches and secondly you don't need a caculator when you work in metric and metric calipers. Zero the callipers on the thickness of the board and then measure the dado and that will give you the difference. It is like looking for a ink pen that will work upside down. Use a pencil.

    Can't you just rezero your caliper at one of the dimensions? That would give you the difference and no calculator..and no remembering. Or did I miss something. i.e., measure the groove..zero the caliper. You don't care what it is. That's your reference. Zero the caliper again AT THAT WIDTH. Now measure the target from that point and viola. And eliminates round off and accumulation errors. Never measure when you can transfer.
    If I would have read further down I see that someone else came up with this too. But I didn't steal it. Honest.
