What life is like for migrants who arrive on UK shores

  • New figures show that more than 5,000 people have tried to cross the Channel so far this year, over 100 of them yesterday alone, picked up by Border Force officials as they attempted the dangerous journey to UK shores.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It's more than twice the number of migrants intercepted during the same period last year, despite the Home Office's pledge to stop the numbers of people entering on small boats.
But what's happening to the people who have managed to make it here, in the hope of beginning a new life?

We had a council flat from 1952 which was my parents.
I was living there with my sister who was the tenant.
When she died at 80 even though I'd lived there for 63 years I was given one month to vacate the flat.
The council said all they would do was give me 150 points and put me on their list.
They then moved in a family of Muslims.
To rent a property I was told I needed a guarantee by someone earning 30 times my rent but they wouldn't accept my sister and brother in law as they were pentioners.
I found a place renting rooms and was paying £819 a month for one.
I eventually moved to a bed and breakfast in Hertfordshire at £150 a week.
With money my sister left me I now live in Portugal as I couldn't afford to live in England any more.
I would have liked to stay in England but as a pensioner I couldn't afford to.
The government is a joke but what could you expect when so many aren't English.

The answer as we all know is the generous welfare they receive on arrival. Therefore to prevent any further deaths in the channel and we are only thinking of the good of these people ..... do not pay them a penny more or give one tiny bit more in welfare than they receive in France or any other European country .. problem solved they will no longer risk their lives crossing from Europe as there is nothing to gain ...... two birds killed with one stone , lives are saved and the tax payer saves money .....

@shane hall Recent 2021 data about the 23,000 processed illegal arrivals into the UK this year indicate that less than 30% may qualify for refugee status. That leaves some 70% as illegal economic migrants - coming to join family members and friends. Or to be the first arrival from their family, and lay the path for more to follow. That's why young men come first - fit, strong and resilient. Many of us believe the economic migrant figure is much higher than 70%. We also know many people have slipped inside UK borders without being processed. The real number of illegal arrivals this year is likely closer to 30,000 (and some in the know say 50,000).
