Many RuneScape players have been longing for the day OSRS gets an HD client. The day has finally come, a group of players has developed a client called HDOS which transforms the graphics of OSRS into the HD graphics from 2008 RuneScape many of you know and love. But what does Jagex think about the client? Is it safe? Just how far along is it? In today’s video, we answer all those questions and more!

This was the era of Runescape that I remember most fondly. Simply because this era of Runescape was my one escape from a tough school life. No matter how much I dreaded going to school, I knew that it would all be okay once I got home and hung out with my RS buddies
anything bad that happend at school didnt matter osrs was a mental safety net

As much as I love the convenience of RuneLite, I'll move to this client in a heartbeat if Jagex approves it.

Personally havent played rs in years, but I dont understand why this isn’t just a graphical option in the main game to begin with.
Because it’s OSRS.. if they do this it’d just be RS3. And they try to stay true to the 07 feeling
OSRS is a clone of the game back in 2007, before this graphical update, they would need to essentially take the same time they took back in 2008 to remake all the updated content. OSRS isn't even the game they want to support since as stated in the video from the mod that RS3 is really the only game that makes them any money.
@@Diddykonga That's not true. They wouldn't be running OSRS if it wasn't profitable. OSRS has a larger playerbase than RS3, so based on that it's fair to assume the majority of membership subscriptions come from it. How that weighs up against RS3's microtransactions is debatable, but it certainly isn't losing them money.
Idk where you got the idea from that they don't want to support OSRS. Mod Mat K was asking a hypothetical "Are the players worth more in RS3 than in OSRS?", not claiming they were.

Tell me this, if you have game that makes $20 per person on average vs a game that makes $1k per person on average, which game as a business would you put your time and resources behind? Its obvious. The only, and I do mean the only, reason that OSRS exists and still exists to this day is because without it, 80% of the player base would have left and never come back, where as with OSRS even if it is barely profitable it still keeps the name "RuneScape" alive in peoples minds which gives them attention market share, meaning people will continue to pay attention to it as a whole, because without OSRS Jagex would have closed RS3 a long time ago.
@@Diddykonga It's nowhere near a clone nowadays. On release, maybe. Now it's just a version of Runescape that evolved differently than Rs3 did from 2007scape
I absolutely loved this era. It was 2007 style game play with amazing graphics. Loved the 2012 times. Killing cockroaches etc. I personally would prefer though that Jagex made it themselves as it seems to be more clean when they do it. Nonetheless, very cool!

Just doesn’t seem like it would make sense for them, just opens up a can of worms for them if anything goes wrong in the future with nothing to gain on their end.

It will bring so many people into the game and i expect that it will extend the life of the game aswell

@@Goregreet really wouldn’t bring many people. Osrs is a hard community to get new plays. Only way I could see it growing is by adding mobile content that would give easy content to do. It would help encourage people to sink more time in.
@@Goregreet buy it? Aren’t they just using a lot of Jagexs old assets? If not Jagex has their old assets they could do this on their own if they feel it would bring in enough players and money to make it worth while. It would also really muddy the waters of what OSRS is. It would make many people mad again with not enough to gain. Saying absolutely nothing is usually a win for corporations.

As a hardcore RS3 fan that watches primarily OSRS content, this is fascinating. Within 30 seconds of the video and seeing the amazing job the creators did - I said to myself I would play OSRS with these graphics

Oh man...! This is what the game looked like when I first started playing. I love OSRS for the gameplay but the graphics aren't nostalgic for me, until now. Man, this makes me happy.
Then you're not an OG osrs player and us that was there before they foked it up and brought out EOC don't want this.

EOC was awhile after this ‘08 era. ‘08 era was great
I played before EOC. The better graphics were out for a long time before the combat changes. Either way, does it matter? It's not like it's being forced on you. If you don't like it then don't download the client. Let people enjoy the game how they want too without getting all defensive, lol.
@@raggahiphop46 I've played 07 scape and got to see the moving in of the new era of 08-Eoc and then osrs being added, I've played all of them all the way back to 07, a lot of OG don't want this because it's not nostalgic for them, that's why currently it's a client and not being forced into the game like the old days, and even then many of the OG players loved 08 scape. How about quit being a negative jerk and let people enjoy what they want about the game and its different eras
@@Zzzarathxt53 Even in 08, you could toggle the HD vs 07 graphics. I mean I played back in the day for all of it, so while I'm still nostalgic for 07 content, I wouldn't mind a toggle at all. I don't understand the whole "would ruin the game for players" when it could be done as an optional toggle. It doesn't affect the game in any way.
I will never use this client over Runelite, as I prefer the oldschool graphic era. That being said, if this gets RS3 players and other gamers to try OSRS, I am all for it.
it's ok to have preferences but hd rs is still "old school graphic era". it was released in 2008 so doesn't go against the old school thing at all.
they adding a similar (better in my opinion) hd plugin to runelite within the next few months

This legit could save the game. SD-mode for the oldskool players and HD-mode for the rs3 and next gen players. No more olschool rs or rs3 just Runescape ahhh memories 😌

I've been using HDOS since MatK's stream, it's been my main client since, only switching to Runelite when I REALLY need plugins. I think Crumb described the client and the situation really well in this video, cheers!

I started in late 2006 or early 2007 and I love how they've worked on the tbow, scythe and blowpipe etc, it feels so jagex made its unreal, I honestly would trade ever single qol from runelite to this client. Now yes there are a few bugs which hopefully then can flesh out, particularly full screen mode. Now my banks only 3b ish, I just hope jagex buy these guys and have them work for them or at least allow them to operate. I hope someone from Jagex allows this because it will absolutely grow this game, nobody is forced to play HD and can play on vanilla if they wish. The future can be great if done correctly with Jagexs help/overlook. This on mobile particularly would smash a hole in the market and grow quick. I can't wait for the future!!
I really hope this comes to a fruitful end because the 2008 hdscape is my favourite era, it's where I really started playing and dusted off my old accounts, it's got such a charm for me personally.
Nah OS Remastered looks 1000 times better and smoother that HD client was the beginning of the end for many of us.
That HD era was the beginning of Runescape for many of us period.
Best runescape was 2011 when you started it up and Born To Do This started playing... Man those were the times I can't believe it's been 10 years since 2011 wow
2006-2007 was the best my man. Back when PKing was in it's prime the wilderness was packed. The player count was at its peak with so many people everywhere who actually talked and played together. The economy was booming with great prices, merching was very profitable. Supply and demand was balanced nicely. All skills like woodcutting, fishing, mining, actually made you really good money. It was actually rewarding to get gathering skills high because you made serious bank. It was the golden age. Once they removed free trade and PKing the beginning of the end came. The game literally never fully recovered from that to this day in terms of player count and popularity.
@@TexasGreed you can't compare now it's still insane count compared to how old game is and especially when mobile was released.
@@TexasGreed pking was removed and trade restrictions were enforced because a lot of the player base were bots, scammers, or other forms of shady accounts. I love 07 scape, but it wasn't all fine and dandy and I wouldn't consider that the Golden era because the amount of neglect jagex had for runescape back then letting everyone run rampant.
I played with the original graphics for a bit back in the day but the HD update still has to be my favorite time playing the game
I think this HD client will bring in a lot of new player base, it’s a fantastic look and gives an option to play a modern osrs.
I'm not a huge fan of RSHD since it was in the dark years but this is a sight to behold

I mostly play old school runescape for the old crappy look. I really don't mind the graphics and that's why I mostly wouldn't want to play the HD client.
I can respect that. Would still be a great option to have for the players that do want it though.

What I pretty much heard was Jagex is lazy to do their job and when someone else does it, they get mad.
Why would they ever make an HD client when that was literally the bridge to EOC? Do you even play the game? Or listen to the video?
@@andrewross95 graphics doesn't change the gameplay. Wheel weasel, double xp, summoning, and alot of other things did. I watched the video again today. Nothing mentioned graphics being EOC so you might want to watch it again.
Its kind of hilarious how we all think these 2004 graphics are so much better, but the nostalgia is overwhelming.
Actually OSRS uses graphics from 2007 that are very different compared to 2004-2006 era. But in my opinion every era before RS3 has it’s beauty.

I dont think it would take away from rs3 playerbase as much as you think, rs3 is a totally different game and has a even more advanced graphics than this
The 2008 graphic update made the game soooo much better. Jagex really messed up back in the day

they need the HD OPTION. option only. for the survival of osrs. literally would bring tons of players that would play for years and years.
I've been playing on it and it's pretty dope. I just wish it was more true to the 08 style instead of 2010/2011. I prefer the animations and graphics to be truer to the 2008 version of the game (which was more "oldschool" feeling)
Now I can finally experience this with decent framerate.. I remember when the HD update came out I could only play it on fixed screen with decent performance and I also used fullscreen a lot but at like 800x600 resolution which was blurry as heck but it still looked incredible seeing RS looking that huge on my screen.
I almost cried when I seen that opening..
Please Jagex, BRING BACK THE OLD DAYS!
This is the game i loved.
for me I would switch knowing it's A) safe and B) jagex approved, not trying to get banned for the better graphics, but I often accidentally open my old vanilla client and just play anyways cause most the time I don't fully need the quality of life stuff

I just recently got back into RS3 because of the graphics, and had an old account for a while. But if this client happens and gets approved, I'm sure i'll be grinding again in OSRS for a while.. heck I think i'd make a new account just for the sake of re living the 2008 graphical experience by skilling and questing ..

HD is way too EOC looking for me personally and fear it will eventually go the same route. Many of EOC shit is creaping it's way into OSRS already.

I loved testing HDOS. It kept me playing the game for a while longer and is pretty much the only reason I play osrs at all nowadays

The HD graphics arent my cup of tea, which is funny cause I love using the GPU settings in Runelite, but the ability to seamlessly switch between would be pretty cool
After a long break, been playing OSRS everyday since the beta has been released. The only "update" I've ever wanted from OSRS since I started in 2014.
Im sure most rs3 players woulld want this too. It enhanced the best aspect of rs visuals.

Guys, please, this is not RSHD. RSHD textures looked very different. What defined those textures was not them looking grainy, but how well they were SHADED, naturally, and the ambience of the lighting from light sources. In fact, all you have to do to prove this is to look at the login screen (which actually IS ripped from RSHD) and compare that to the textures in this beta.
Yeah, I dunno what happened to that bloodveld but it's grainy af. It looks really bad.

I'd like to see jagex approve of the client to kind of give me some peace of mind that I won't be banned for using the client and that the client itself isn't malicious.
I may play it on a VM with a burner account just to check it out but I definatly won't be logging in with my main just yet.

Why is there so much hate on this era of RuneScape? 2008-2011 was my golden age ... sure no Wildy or Free Trade but Nex, While Guthix Sleeps, elite void etc were all so sick. We have a 2008 GE anyway so what’s all the fear over an HD client? I would play RS so much if we got some of that stuff ...

Its already in the game for everyone, they just need to grow some balls and download the client. Those who dont want to can stay on runelite, you can already switch between hdos and runelite so having both graphic options Already exists..

You can set born to do this as the log in theme. That with the animated background is perfect.
If Jagex can see this, just know that you would have my membership for life if this is approved. So many newer games are being released every day that have such beautfiul graphics. Why can't OSRS be brought up to speed with just the visuals?

I myself and a lot of different people have been using the client for ages without any problems.
I don't think these fears of getting banned are warranted, Jagex won't just ban paying customers when they don't have to.

I think HD graphics are going to keep OSRS alive in the long run, but this one ain't it, and as you said, Runelite is just too good not to use. So until there's an HD plugin for RL I don't see many people using this. OS remastered is only good looking HD client imo.

The only thing getting me to play again is a HD client. Haven’t gotten a single other reason to start playing again.
HDOS has been great. Best thing to happen to OSRS in years, I hope Jagex endorses the client.

in some places it looks really good but in others not so much. the rock crab area in particular was really hard to look at and some character models look really weird.
