    I've seen lots of geniuses here saying that Ricci is not talented enough for a world class violinist, but someday they'll learn that playing with personality is more valuable than playing like the piece it's just a sheet music, thanks for sharing your genius heart with us, Ruggiero

    Amen to that!!! The magic of Mr Ricci is the big picture...something most violinists don’t get. 😉

    Sublimely angelic, transcendental...and yet utterly diabolical at the same time. What multidimensional sounds and layering Ricci was able to bring out from that instrument...it looks as if he is bringing this up literally out of thin air; effortless.

    Playing Paganini the way Ricci did was absolutely unparalleled. His left-hand pizzicato was distinctively inimitable.

    Wise music appreciators know that when someone says a performance/piece is good, believe them. People who think it is bad when others see it as excellent just don't understand or aren't able to appreciate. Believe me, this is an amazing performance by Ricci. Differentiate between the crappy recording/big reverb and the performance.

    @cornel999 This is a live performance (in contrast to many of the early recordings) and is certainly not mush. Ricci was a renowned master of this repertoire when very few other violinists could touch it.

    Paganini.

      @@sherom You don't have to be able to play the music to critique it, also how is it an achievement to just have two takes if they are horrible. Ricci is past his prime in this video, no shame in that, but to say it is a great interpretation is just delusional.

    • @sherom
      @sherom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Never said it was a great interpretation. I would rather listen to a recording less than perfect, knowing it was recorded almost as a live performance, than a recording that has been spliced and edited to sound perfect, I gather you prefer listening to an illusion, god bless the sound engineers for what they can do. To the average listener, and especially a Ricci fan, they can't detect this is not Ricci at his best, it takes people like you to point out the flaws. Heifetz once said 90 percent of the people who come and see me play, come to see me make a mistake, you are one of the 90 percent.

    These judgements are always very subjective, but perhaps you should name them so I can see who you have in mind. That is a pretty incredible assertion, as Ricci was universally recognized as a master in this repertoire. I have heard Ricci in concert and found his playing to be truly riveting. Of course there are other great violinists like Milstein, Kogan, etc., but Ricci had the greatest repertoire, including the most Paganini.

    "Ricci" is a long story; i've been a big fan since the early 70's, seen him many times in public, very familiar with his career. we have to face facts - he did not maintain his technique, he "coasted" on his talent, and his playing just got worse and worse beginning in the 70's to where we have videos like this, where he's old, just doesn't give a damn, and slops through things. any attempt to claim this is great playing is just ignoring reality. may as well claim climate change is a hoax. it's a shame, since he is one of the all time great talents. his recordings from the 40's and 50's are just mind-blowing, like the "A Paganini Recital" album.

      Oh well...Mr. Ricci is in his late 60’s in this video. We all grow old...and become past our prime. But in his “Prime,” not even Kogan could match him in virtuosity & originality. Just listen to his early recordings or his Carnegie Hall Recital from the 40’s.
      P.S. I’m a big fan of Kogan’s too.

These judgements are always subjective but Ricci was universally recognized as an expert in this field, although it is not widely known that he had the widest repertoire of any violinist. Milstein, Kogan and others were great too, but take nothing away from Ricci. I note that in your blog you state that Shlomo Mintz's fine performance of the Brahms concerto "sounds like sawing wood".Perhaps because he is jewish?

      Yeah it’s a shame because some musical ideas are good, and as someone else said he stayed successful from his fame as a young prodigy but didn’t keep it up. But it’s weird because he clearly dedicated time to preparing for this performance, and it makes you wonder how much violinists have been influenced by masters like this who for lack of a better word, bullshitted their way into impressing the audience on stage because TH-cam didn’t exist. Like violinists always have taken what they can get, but like I wonder how ricci himself felt about his playing or to performance after it happened.
      I still like the performance though, and for the ending he goes nuts😂
