Leonid Kogan Borisovich (17 de novembro de 1924 - 17 de dezembro de 1982) ( em hebraico : בוריסוביץ 'קוגן לאוניד, russo : Леонид Борисович Коган, ucraniano : Леонід Борисович Коган) foi um violino virtuoso e um do século 20 é o mais famoso Soviética violinistas. Ele classificou entre os maiores representantes da União Soviética Escola de tocar violino.
--Vida e carreira
Kogan nasceu em Dnipropetrovsk , na Ucrânia , filho de um fotógrafo que foi um violinista amador. Depois de mostrar um interesse precoce e capacidade para tocar violino, sua família mudou-se para Moscou , onde ele foi capaz de aprofundar seus estudos. A partir dos dez anos ele estudou com o famoso violino pedagogo Abrão Yampolsky. Em 1934, Jascha Heifetz feito shows em Moscou. "Eu participei de cada um", disse Kogan tarde ", e me lembro até agora todas as notas que tocava. Ele era o artista ideal para mim". Kogan Quando tinha 12 anos, Jacques Thibaud estava em Moscou e ouvi-lo tocar. O virtuoso francês previu um grande futuro para Kogan.
Kogan estudou na Escola Central de Música de Moscovo (1934-1943), em seguida, no Conservatório de Moscou (1943-1948), onde estudou como uma pós-graduação (1948-1951).
Na idade de 17 anos, e enquanto ainda era estudante, ele se apresentou em toda a URSS . Ele foi co-ganhador do primeiro prêmio no Festival Mundial da Juventude em Praga . Sua carreira sempre foi ofuscada pela de Oistrakh, que foi fortemente promovido pelas autoridades soviéticas. Kogan foi feito um Artista Homenageado em 1955 e um de Artista do Povo da URSS em 1964. Ele recebeu o Prêmio Lenin em 1965.
Kogan casados Elizabeth Gilels (irmã do pianista Emil Gilels ), também um violinista de concerto. Seu filho, Pavel Kogan (b. 1952) tornou-se um famoso violinista e maestro . Sua filha, Nina Kogan (b. 1954), é um pianista de concerto e se tornou o parceiro e sonata acompanhante de seu pai em uma idade adiantada.
Kogan morreu de um ataque cardíaco na cidade de Mytishchi , enquanto viajava de trem entre Moscou e Yaroslavl a um show que iria realizar com o filho. Dois dias antes, ele havia tocado o Concerto de Beethoven em Viena.
Kogan foi o violinista clássica apenas da nota, que preferiu jogar em todas as cordas de aço (marca Thomastik). O mais grave jogadores clássicos preferem um aço E-corda, e talvez também de aço A-corda (como no caso de David Oistrakh), enquanto usando intestino ou sintéticos nas cordas G e D. Aço deu Kogan mais clareza e poder, enquanto sacrificar a profundidade, calor e doçura associados intestino ou sintéticos.

Kogan utilizados dois Guarneri del Gesù violinos: o ex-Colin 1726 e 1733 o ex-Burmester. Ele usou arcos francês por Dominique Peccatte . Kogan nunca possuiu realmente estes instrumentos, que foram fornecidos a título de empréstimo do governo soviético. Hoje elas valem mais de US $ 4 milhões de dólares.

The vinyl distortion in the recording nicely accentuates his ridiculously perfect intonation.
It's almost annoying how good he is
no, it the contrary. The curve grooves on a vinyl record add more depth to the sound in comparison with the numerical peaks on computerised recoding. Vinyl records offer more clarity on the high frequencies as well. Fr example when you listened to an orchestra on a vinyl recoding, you can feel the depth of the stage, i.e. the sound being dispersed in 3 dimensions. In other words, vinyl records reproduce sounds with greater realistic perspective.
Is it sharper ? It sounds like but I am not too sure

I don't think I've ever heard a version of this with a clearer performance of rithm. Everyone gets crazy about going fast and then all the tempo becomes a mess. This one is really nice.

I don't think its possible for a non-musician (and even many musicians) to fathom how difficult and advanced some of those techniques are. In some moments it seems as though he has brought Paganini back to life along with the soul of the devil in his fervent performance. Pretty fucking brilliant I must say.

Should i have to explicitly state my sources for widely known techniques just because eddy explained them in the same way? There is no genuineness in this, it’s literally called answering a question. And how would you know if i had relative pitch, when it’s not even relevant to the techniques, did you similarly use them ignorantly and lift them from other videos? I have learnt many things from that channel, and i have every right to use that knowledge, however limited it may be, to try to help.

Edit: I thought you were answering the main question to try and make it seem like you did "fathom how difficult and advanced some of those techniques are" in some pretentious way. I should've read your comment more carefully. Relative pitch is the ability to discern intervals, so it would be relevant IF you were trying to pretend like you fully understand these techniques (b/c you weren't sure if there were thirds or not, and somebody who has developed relative pitch would be able to tell ). Sorry for the misunderstanding, and I should not have commented so haphazardly.

He is able to make all that jumble looking notes sound so tidy that even a lay ear would enjoy it. All thanks to his unbelievably precise technique.

This to me is one of Paganini's best pieces. It has all of the performative and theatrical virtuosity we expect from him, but it is combined with some very sophisticated melodies in between. Kogan, of course, plays it really beautifully too!!!

Incredible. He's jumping octaves with harmonics, the whistling sounds. So he isn't even pressing the string down. He knows where to touch it. Truly gliding over the strings.

When he plays each note. You can hear his clarity with every bow stroke, and the notes following after each other. Everything from really hard cadenzas to even this piece it almost seems effortless to him. You can tell he really loved playing, or I think so at least.

This is as good as the violin playing gets! Just the purity of intonation alone makes this listening worthwhile. The key to Leonid Kogan's magic is, I believe, in his fearless, earnest, and clearly articulated tone. I think that David Oistrakh achieved such consistency of tone much later in his career. Issac Stern was the one who made Oistrakh rethink his own sound production. Whereas, Kogan had always had that verve, that clarity and vibrancy which were uniquely his own and therefore absolutely irresistible.
Well said! Heifetz almost there but doesn't have the devil spirit like Kogan, everyone else fulfilled some required technique but not as flawless and expressive, BTW I have not heard any other virtuoso can do the whistle from 9:50 to 10:38 .
@@joecheng3344 the whistle thing is really easy. Its called false harmonics. Kind of hard actually but nothing compared to other parts of the piece

The 4th variation just absolutely drops my jaw. I know Segovia has arranged violin pieces, but I couldn’t even imagine arranging the 4th variation like that... wow. This is just amazing to see and hear as a classical guitarist ,

Paganini reborn? The people that can attain this level of performance you can count on one hand and have fingers left over!
Paganini probably played much worse than the top violinists of 20th and 21th century. it's not a matter of talent or gift, technique and training methods evolve. Just imagine Paganini being the first person ever to use those techniques on a violin : there wasn't any other violinist to compare his playing to. Therefore being the first to successfully master those techniques and show his skills to others automatically made him the best of his time. In our generations we have kids that are trained since they are 4 years old to master Paganini caprices and newer pieces showcasing even more advanced techniques.
To add to the comment, wrong notes and bad intonation was also more accepted in the past b/c violin soloists were not held to the same level of perfection that we have today due to violinists like Kogan, Milstein, and Heifetz. If you listen to a recording of Sarasate playing the Bach Prelude, you could hear sub-par intonation towards the end (and he was considered one of the first very precise violinists!).

The pyrotechnical aspect of Kogan is actually overshadowed by the heart and soul that comes through his violin
Is this the greatest violinist to have ever lived? What else was he capable of? This seems like cake to him(after years of practice) - but still, a lot of these techniques and notes are conceptually challenging by themselves... This is the kind of greatness to strive for, the more you reach, the closer you come.

"Phi moment" begins at 7:28, which is 726 seconds(12:06) X .618 = 448.668 second mark(7.28 minutes), Paganini knew his stuff... Leonid is a master.
No one plays Paganini better. Incredible virtuosity, but not at the cost of being musical.
I think that's one major difference between the old school and new school. Students should be taught the technique of expression, not the expression of technique. Gotta love Kogan, incredible sound and control.

He is not as well known as Heifetz because of the Cold War. If he had left Russia early, he would have shared the world stage with Heifetz. The same goes for Oistrakh.

After listening to this performance, along with his Carnan Fantacy -Wax. version, specially his Guitarre I am fully convinced that Heifitz and the rests are merely qualify for a great virtuoso, but L Kogan is the only messenger from Paganini. dynamic, powerful, thrilling, those personality only can be found inside of Paganini & Kogan. they get you the the goose bump.

Kogan maybe had more similarities to Paganini e.g. power, speed n the italian bow grip , while Kavakos has insane speed; he might be the faster violinist from this planet... or other, n plays the almost extinct russian grip

Kogan saw Heifetz in concert when he was young, and said never forgot a single note. It was that concert that made him want to push and be the best...or rather be like his idol. The earliest recordings of Heifetz though blows everybody away in terms of technique.

@@Rollich1 I'm not sure what the method of filming a man who died almost forty years ago has to do with "today's fashion".
It’s not an “authentic” filmed performance. Often, the bow strokes (visually) don’t match the recorded sound. We see short bows and hear longer ones, for example, after 3:00
It is disturbing to read several comments that declare this or that person to be the greatest violinist ever... - Do you have a checklist, do you give points to decide that? And why take anything away from others that all have achieved something that we are not even able to imagine and fully understand? There were/are a number of wonderful musicians - why is that not enough? Let's love and admire them all for what they are/were.
