Great reminder that if somethings already broken you're not going to break it even more if you open it up to take a look, and it doesn't take Big Clive to diagnose and fix a faulty solder joint. Thanks for the vid!

I like the way you tin your soldering iron's tip every time. I always forget that. In fact, I had forgotten about that over the years. Good technique. You're a fearless kind of a guy. I learn a lot.
The best one I learned from you was the Honda generator connection to a bulk tank. I did that on my two-Honda power station for my fifth wheel built into my truck bed box. Thank you.

Moe, I bought one of these also about a year ago from Sam’s Club and so far so good. But you always wonder. Thanks for the video, gives me somewhere to troubleshoot. I hope you didn't purchase the extended warranty!!! It makes the manufacturers warranty obsolete and they don't tell you that. Mine burnt out a few weeks ago. Thought everything was okay cause I shouldve had a year left on the warranty..... but nope!
Now I'm trying to find a replacement compressor assembly to swap out the burnt one. And after a week of searching, no luck so far. And if you can swap out a car stereo and speakers, you can swap out this stupid part.

Not 2 weeks ago I opened mine up. It was about 20 years old.. It's been dead on my shelf for years and totally forgotten, but I opened it up and it was the exact same battery as inside of yours!! I also liked charging mine off from a real battery charger and did it by hooking the jumper leads to my charger leads. I'd heard you could not do that on some jump boxes and that people were trying it and popping a fuse of something inside. Mine was pretty simple and as long as the switch was closed, it charged.. I had to use mine as a booster for my trailer winch several times and man did that work well!!

I actually got this exact same one that one of my tenants left in our property. The issue with mine was one of the buttons was broke and stuck inside the unit. I opened it to repair the button and reassembled it. Evidently just as you did, I hit the connector for the USB ports and disconnected it. It was doing the exact thing yours was, flashing and wouldn't turn off. I figured it was probably something in the circuitry and was going to tear back into it when I had time. Then out of nowhere you posted this video! I swear it was just a couple days ago I was working on mine and I was looking for videos to see if I could get an idea of what was wrong.
Seeing your discovery of the connector, I knew exactly what was wrong with mine. I was so excited I paused your video grabbed mine and fixed it in less than 5 minutes.
Thank you for that! More than likely I would have discovered the problem when I tore back into it, but I'm sure it would have been days maybe weeks down the road. Now it works perfectly!
I may go back in and delete the beeper as well!

A majority of family appliance repairs or short lifespan electronics repairs that I have done were broken solder nodes. It's one of the first things I look for in a troubleshoot. Most of the time it's due to a cold solder joint on a larger gauge wire or component lead - operator or flow solder parameter error.

I bought a fancy Everstart jump box in March. It's made by the same company that produces the same ones branded Stanley and CAT. It showed a 12.7v charge at purchase and jumped just fine for 7 months since I recharged it after each use with my 12v 400w inverter. Then I used it to recharge my cellphone overnight when being used. That dragged the jump battery down to 4.5v. Recharged it back to 13.8v where it dropped to 12.8v then 12.6v during the day. Tried using the jump feature on my car to find it no longer came on when the start button was pressed. The icons did show up when connected wrong or after the motor was running. I called their customer service to be told it was due to using the wrong 110v current. Somehow it needs that from a wall outlet only to get a full charge. Bought a new battery then recharged the box when driving by using the inverter for the next two months. The inverter fan would shut off when the inverter inside the jump box went into trickle charge mode. It did that at 13.9V but the battery would lose enough charge overnight to return to 12.6v with no jump starting. Think it took over 40 hours on trickle charge to get the battery fully charged to stay at 12.8v for weeks on end when not being used with the start button/jump start feature now functional.

As soon as you apologized for the beeping the first time I thought to myself oh I would have to remove that beeper. Right at the end I noticed that the brand new tennis ball rolled across the floor and that may have not been the first time it rolled across the floor but it was in the video and when he went to put it on his dog's nose it was covered in grease and grime.

FYI: A tiny bit of phosphoric acid added to the battery acid in a battery will cut WAY down on the sulphation and allow it to desulphate during charging with minimal damage to the lead plates. Just FYI

Generally it's just one set of cells in the pack that goes bad. I will open the pack and test each set 4.1full-3.0v empty and any cell that is way lower than this is generally bad. If I have two packs I will cannibalize one to make the other good by soldering in cells.

I just replaced the battery in my old harbor freight 3-in-1 jump starter, same as this really, same switch, same battery, none of the electronicals.
I removed the analog battery guage and put in a digital one as I prefer them, and found the little wall wart they had in it was only 12v 500ma, no wonder it never charged the darned thing.
I replaced with a 13.8v 500ma and it charges perfectly now.
    They are incredibly simple devices.

I suspected a bad solder joint. I've run into that with stuff made in China. Apparently they don't teach their workers how to solder. Good fix.

I have a lawn mower battery, with vice grips holding half a set of jumper cables on it...it is 100 times better a jump pack than any of these little jump boxes with SLA batteries. I've had those things go dead in as little as a year, the SLA battery actually going flat. And as he said, they NEVER have the cranking amps they say, nor can they crank anything over for more than minute or so before going flat.

  • @GoatOrange

Looks like they have "improved" the electronic mountings. I got one where the boards had fallen off inside the case. It had 2 black plastic brackets on either side of the main board that didnt really hold the board. I see on yours they made one piece that went across the board. Also on yours there is a metal bracket that holds the wall wart charger in place, mine didnt have that and was loose but still in place. The solder connections for the charger were crap do it wouldn't charge. Fixed that and it works now. There just crap units with no quality control. Least we both got one for free. 😅

i just bought one of those battery analyzers an Ansel brand on looks same as yours, works great and seems very believable and accurate, i have the 100amp toaster style but its far too optimistic everything is a good battery and everything makes 1000+ Cranking amps.. even 11v batterys that wont crank a car at all
i searched all over the internet looking for technical data on how these analyzers actually work but couldnt find anything, surely it places some kind of load on the battery to test for shorts and its voltage drop under load, but it has dinky little 16guage leads thatd melt at 40 amps id imagine, maybe they can flash like 100 amps though those leads for a tenth of a second and get the info they need without the big toaster element and heavy wires
would love to see some videos on reviving car batteries, likely using a stick welder, just seen UTG do a couple videos on it but i think you could get right into it and make it a series.. car batteries are the number one thing people are always replacing.. i have 4 road vehicles 3 offroad ones and a pile of yard equipment with batteries.. seems every month or two im out buying a battery i have one that shows 10-11v and little to no cranking amps but its a large truck battery im gonna pop the tops fill it up and feed it 150 amps in cycles see how it feels about that

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The little analyzers simply measure the internal resistance and calculate based on that. The toaster testers all seam wildly different. Mine does just the opposite and tells me everything is near bad on known good batteries. I have learned what means what with it over the years. I also have a 50amp toaster style and that says everything is great as 50amps really isn't much.
I have old videos on reviving batteries and I will say the stick welder trick is a gimmick and only give superficial voltage. The battery will self discharge overnight and leave you stranded. The biggest issue with 12v car batteries is it is actually 6 batteries inside one case and it only takes one to short out to make the entire thing useless. Inside each of those 6 batteries is a bunch of lead plates that are essentially smaller batteries themselves(20ish).The lead plates are a consumable and with everything being super cheapened up I am only managing 8-10years out the best batteries and 5-6 out of the majority. Once the plates start falling apart they touch each other and short out. The stick welder is trying to arc out this/these shorts so they no longer touch. Problem is even if you get it to work, bump the battery and another lead chunk will fall and short out.

@@sixtyfiveford yeah forsure i wouldnt think itd be full proof otherwise everyone would be doing it, id have to believe uncle tony's garage and he says he took a battery sitting for years and did the refill and stick welder trick to it and stuck it in a car over a month ago and it now starts it great everytime after barely if at all cranking before.. seems like it was probably a low useage battery though not one thats had its moneys worth
id be happy with 5-6 years i never get that, i get 1-3 up in canada.. even when theyre properly cared far, i mean not much to lose i have bad batteries, a good welder, and some water
my uncle had a battery fail in under 6 months recently and it failed properly to where it wouldnt let the car start or run at all had a dead short in one or two of the cells even with a booster pack the battery seemed to eat up all the power and give the car issues starting and running, showed 12v too on a multimeter, put the toaster on it and it dropped to something silly like 4v knew it was the problem right there, with just the multimeter no load it i wouldnt of been able to see that though, thats why i wonder how the ancel testers would detect this sort of issue that only appears under load
