I played the WORST rated D&D Game on Steam | Daggerdale Review

  • Daggerdale is an RPG based on 4th edition DnD that fails on every conceivable metric: gameplay, graphics and even music.
Dungeons and Dragons video games have always been a mixed bag. While there are classics like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, there are also games like, well Daggerdale, by Bedlam Games.
This 2011 game is the lowest rated DnD game on Metacritic, so I dove in to understand why. I played Daggerdale on PC, your mileage may vary if you have an ancient X-box 360 or PS 3 copy.

personally I'd rather have seen these devs make it big with something decent quality and I'd love a dev like Eutechynx to go tits up.....cus those fools now 40+ years in the games industry and not one chart topping hit to their name, just piles and piles of trash to their name....I still fail to see how these fools lasted this long when so many shit tier devs collapse in 1-3 games
Eutechynx made SRS street racing Syndicate, some ASCAR games and Ride To Hell....there is not way they should remain a thing...someone with very deep pockets has to be funding em or if there is a cursed dev it's them.....cursed to make trash and remain a viable business.....

Came to say this too. Daggerdale is cheap and forgettable and I never bothered doing a second playthrough with a different character, but I personally don't recall minding it too much until the final battle; I was okay with it enough to play it to the end. With Descent to Undermountain, I couldn't stomach dealing with it anymore past an hour or so and never returned. It's legit terrible, outside of its using what would later be the tavern music in Baldur's Gate. That's the one good thing I can recall about it.

@@WilliamSRD A large part of the problem with videogames in the 4e era of D&D (i would say 2008-2012/2013) was that the license for games was held by Atari (guess who published this game here) and they didn't really do anything with it, publishing stuff most likely just to prove they're maintaining the license. in 2009 Hasbro sued Atari to get the license back (Atari was also sublicencing it to Bandai Namco at the time I believe which was a contractual no-no if memory serves... it's been a few years) and only in late 2011 did they get it back. unsurprisingly, this game came out mid 2011, likely when the writing was on the wall that the license was going away.

Heroes of the Lance? That shit is straight up not playable. It is barely a game. This is not hyperbole. If you think this is bad, you have no idea.
My experience is with the NES version (which is very easy to get running on an emulator. I actually did have the cartridge as a kid, though.) The PC version is, from what I understand, only marginally better.

Honestly, I think the only reason 4e failed was because it followed 3.5. There was SO much complexity in 3.5 (with basically every book adding new rules/spells/classes), and it really did have to get trimmed down to bring in newer players looking for an easy system to play.

no, no, no, the worst DnD game of all time was "Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor". Was so bad that at the time if you unninstalled it (Something you will do almost inmediately) damaged the operating system. And the combat was atroccious, so bad that was unplayable.

It seemed like a small group worked on this. I gave it a chance, enjoyed it a bit but then was disappointed with alot of its problems. It just wasn't as deep as it should've been. Limited spells and the point system was too short. After this I tried Dungeons n Dragons Heroes on Xbox Original which was a bit more enjoyable. Then I tried Lord of the Rings War in the North. Great game, really fun. But on xbox it has a corrupt save issue that occured after you beat the game once or twice (trying to go back for missing loot). And you would lose your save file and start all over. Fun game but that ruined it for me. Not sure if the Steam version has this issue though.

He’s powerful, he’s loyal - to the lord of darkness, and we all need darkness, so we can sleep and have low light for romantic candle-lit dinners… not at the same time… well I guess you could… maybe that’s your thing. Nevertheless, I’m still yet to hear what’s so bad about Rezlus. He doesn’t sound so bad.
I’m assuming Rezlus is a he. Ah! Maybe that woman in the opening cut scene is an ex of Rezlus and has a grudge against him… maybe THAT explains why she wants the murder hobos to defeat Rezlus (who’s not such a bad guy, going by the info we’ve been given).

Honestly didn't mind Daggerdale that much... Coming from playing the old A-RPG D&D games like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and such it felt pretty similar overall. It was clearly intended to be a multi part game and it shows where it was rushed on production, but still a good time waster for a short bit. Definitely not the worst D&D game but certainly not the greatest either.
