This guy is a total and complete car nerd, and I love it! He knows what he's talking about, and it's always presented in such an interesting way... And those motion graphics? SICK!!!
DRIVE CLEAN is one of the best segments in DRIVE, period. Keep this up guys because it is very informative and useful for all of us car owners in the real world!
i have to say this is a great segment. larry is very informative, interesting, and great at interviews. i have never seen a series as in depth on detailing as this and i think its a very important topic that seems to be skipped over by most automotive media. keep up the great work!
Big props to DRIVE CLEAN, Larry and BMW for finally giving us a real world explanation of not only how to maintain a "Frozen/Matte" finish, but more so what it is, how it's applied and of course the real nuts and bolts, how to care for it so it protects your cars finish. Bravo! Another stellar episode!
It's a testament to the quality you guys produce that you could garner 30k views in 2 days on a subject as niche and uninteresting to the masses as car washing and detailing, but I for one found it fascinating and really entertaining!
I don't comment very often but I've got to say that I love this series. Larry is a very likeable host; friendly and informative. And I love the intro/credits music!
This is a great episode. Anyone wanting to paint a flat matte or frozen look the best clear coat I have ever seen is the Alsa Soft Feel clear. It even comes in spray cans. And has a velvet feel to it.
Loving this new series!! Keep up the good work. I think everyone expected somewhat dull videos when the show about cleaning cars started, but I personally think these videos are some of the better videos from Drive! Awesome.
I remember back when Speedvision (now SpeedTV) was first announced. I was so excited that there would be great automotive content on whenever I wanted to watch it. To say that channel was and is a letdown is an understatement. The Drive channel on TH-cam is what SpeedTV should be. A great diversified lineup of automotive programing that is well produced. I am a huge fan and want to thank you. Please keep the videos coming.
Another incredible show. I said it before and I'll say it again - this is one of the strongest segments in the Drive family. I know you've been bugged a lot about this but I'd still like to ask - are we going to get an episode showing us how to clean an engine bay? The dos and donts, how to avoid compromising sensors, how to get the best look, how to maintain it? Thanks for the great show guys, informative and definitely entertaining. Keep up the great work!
Got a silver frozen 2012, 40,000 kms in northern Alberta. Rock chips are unavoidable up here but paint is doing fine. BMW has a wax to use on it but it's not cheap.
I wash my mitt (if its not at the point where I need to throw away) in the garage sink with warm water. I try to squirt the water from the inside of the mitt, out to force the contaminants thru the fibers. Detergents in the washer can cause scratches. Avoid the "Powder" detergents...only use the liquid if you must. Warm water, shoot from inside out, and agitate with your fingers to release dirt. If it doesnt get clean. Toss it. Hope that helps! - Larry
First time I hear an American guy giving some explanation without speaking way to loud and saying "awesome" "amazing" every 2 minutes. Very nice and relaxing explanation.
Very interesting. I have always wondered how this paint is cleaned. Not sure I would get one of my cars painted with a frosted product but Larry has helped me to understand the dynamics of this paint. Thanks!
It's not "absorbing" the light it's diffusing the light. Things are shiny because they will take a point of light and reflect a point of light, a matte finish will take a point of light and will scatter that point instead of reflecting it. It's the same concept of looking through frosted glass.
Its a unique paint for a unique client...I think people who buy this type of paint understand the pro's ad con's of ownership. It's definitely cool looking paint though.... Thanks for the comment -Larry
what this whole video taught me once again is that Matte paint is still a very tough paint to be properly maintained. Go for matte wrap. Maybe Drive Clean can make a video regarding car wraps? Pros and cons etc
Trying to get my head around this. So BMW have brought out an extremely expensive, unrepeatable, plasti dip paint? If I wanted a frozen finish I would just go buy plasti dip for a fraction of the price.
Jon Vincent that’s part of the appeal I’m sure - in Americans’ minds - “can’t do any extra work with it” is the ideal situation, same reason why the automatic transmission became so popular.
i've seen a lot of matte finished cars...and then i've seen the bronze and blue matte from bmw... videos don't do justice on how much more amazing these colors are in real life, compared to any other matte finish
Not necessarily a "hassle"...just a different approach to maintenance. (But yes, most think its a pain in the butt) I think it pretty cool...but I detail cars for a living. So I'm always ready for a challenge. :)
So BMW has created a crappy flat dull paint that can't be repaired. It has to be officially repainted by BMW interests. This is part and parcel to BMW's strategy of maximizing customer dependence on them and their official crap. Every nut and bolt on those things is bespoke and they will cost you an arm and a leg. Stupid.
I'd never buy a car with this kind of paint for many reasons (prefer high gloss, too high maintenance, Canadian winters would destroy it) but I've always wondered about the stuff you went over. I had no clue that the BMW "matte" paint actually had a clear coat. And even though I'll never use the info myself I'm glad I know it.
As always Larry you created another great video. It would seem that someone looking at a car with the "frozen" paint job should carefully consider what they are getting themselves into. Much more care and much less forgiveness for scratches, chips than a traditional gloss paint job, a matte finish wrap would be a good alternative to achieve the satin or semigloss look and it protects your paint at the same time.
Nice clinic on paint and a vision to the future. Once again a great show. But, as I imagine you detail a lot of classic cars with "classic" paint, it would be nice to hear from you how we can preserve that colour especially that red that loses all its shine when the car sees a glimpse of sun.
these are a very rare and expensive paint option that only a very small percent of us will ever come in contact with. i believe that a video on cleaning the engine bay, wheels or interior would be more useful to more of us. great video though
Wow these drive clean episodes really are informative. Can you guys make a video about cleaning the interior of a car? especially one with high gloss wood trims.. they are such a pain to clean properly as it is very to keep them free of scratches.
Interesting to know the level of detail that goes into care and maintenance for the "frozen" matte finish. It leaves me wondering how this is different from simply clear coating primer though. Also, you keep talking about the mitts as opposed to sponges and such, but how do you clean the mitts and the other implements? Do you just buy new ones every so often?
Hi Larry, what's the best way to keep an engine bay in tip top shape, also. . . What's the best way to keep exhaust pipes and tips clean? ( Obviously the issue with pipes is heat and with tips is carbon deposits, but is there a way to prevent build up on either?)
frozen grey is one of the best looking colors ever on a M3 but after seeing this I don't think I would be up for it. It's just so much more to worry about.
Thanks for all the comments guys. So pumped you are enjoying the episodes. I CANT WAIT TO SHOOT THE NEXT SEASON OF DRIVE CLEAN! I have so many ideas (from your comments) about what topics to cover. I'm the luckiest car nut ever. I wash and drive cars....and I dont have to wear a suit. SOLD.
I agree that with some light energy, heat energy is "tagged along" as well. But in this case it shouldn't make a obvious difference, perhaps a few degrees higher or so.
Amaising, nice... and as far as the wrap being expensive, I bet you getting a new coat of frozen paint when you scuff it isn't going to be any cheaper, if your car that you wrap isn't your DD then chipping shouldn't really be a concern.
Larry looks so defeated when he knew that you can do almost nothing on the paint apart from washing it lol
This guy is a total and complete car nerd, and I love it! He knows what he's talking about, and it's always presented in such an interesting way... And those motion graphics? SICK!!!
STOKED! I'm so excited that you guys love this. So grateful for the kind note
DRIVE CLEAN is one of the best segments in DRIVE, period. Keep this up guys because it is very informative and useful for all of us car owners in the real world!
These are actually fantastic. Can't believe DRIVE has made a series on washing cars that is actually... spectacular and fun to watch.
Larry before walking in: "Brand new paint from BMW! Looks great, excited to ask questions.
After: "Oh."
i have to say this is a great segment. larry is very informative, interesting, and great at interviews. i have never seen a series as in depth on detailing as this and i think its a very important topic that seems to be skipped over by most automotive media. keep up the great work!

Bravo! Another stellar episode!
Again, I am so loving your episode. A true car guy and your breakdown of it all is superb. This is one of the better shows on drive.
I have nothing but praise for this series. Great job on the car, explaining, video work, everything.
It's a testament to the quality you guys produce that you could garner 30k views in 2 days on a subject as niche and uninteresting to the masses as car washing and detailing, but I for one found it fascinating and really entertaining!
Thanks for taking the time to meet with the US paint specialist. Great educational video.
I don't comment very often but I've got to say that I love this series. Larry is a very likeable host; friendly and informative. And I love the intro/credits music!
In summary: don't buy this paint. And if you do, don't ever ever ever drive your car.
sebastianpatten put a paint protection film
+meschio good luck finding a paint protection film that has a matte finish
joshua kornel its called xpel stealth. Amazing stuff
Really awesome of BMW to roll out upper management and technical experts instead of saying "We don't have time for you people". Great Video.
Thanks again for the kind words! Stoked you liked it. -Larry
This is a great episode. Anyone wanting to paint a flat matte or frozen look the best clear coat I have ever seen is the Alsa Soft Feel clear. It even comes in spray cans. And has a velvet feel to it.

Just get your car wrapped if you want a matte finish. Completely removal.
whenever i watch these videos, it always inspires me to clean my ride!
Wow i love this show, not just for the information but how it was produced and edited. Amazing work, keep it up!
This series is awesome, he is very eloquent and well spoken. I think the rest of the team needs to learn a thing or two from him on how to present.
Another incredible show. I said it before and I'll say it again - this is one of the strongest segments in the Drive family. I love Drive Clean, Its my second favorite drive show, Tuned being my Favorite. I hope that it comes back in a future season.
I wash my mitt (if its not at the point where I need to throw away) in the garage sink with warm water. I try to squirt the water from the inside of the mitt, out to force the contaminants thru the fibers. Detergents in the washer can cause scratches. Drive has got another fantastic program on its hands!!! Love it
Thank you drive channel for informative videos in the automotive sector.
I LOVE this show, it allows my inner clean freak to feel at home.
Another great episode. Absolutely one of my new favorite DRIVE shows. Great job!
First time I hear an American guy giving some explanation without speaking way to loud and saying "awesome" "amazing" every 2 minutes. Very nice and relaxing explanation.
Ontop of everything else everyone mentioned.. it absorbs sunlight... I can only image how long this stuff will last in the sun lol
+MoonMan exactly.
BMW, making paint correction even more expensive and difficult. Smh.
*****
Most matte finished out there are 3M or similar wrapping. Guaranteed. And the smarter choice.
Addictive_LiquoriCe We are not talking about wrapping..
@@monera9675 Late to the party, but a smart man gets his car wrapped to protect his paint.
Larry, amazing show as always. It is great to see someone so passionate about what they do. The show was incredibly informative! Thank you!
You can clean the mitt regularly or buy new ones as they get soiled. Its pretty important to make sure they clean. Thx
Very interesting. I have always wondered how this paint is cleaned. Not sure I would get one of my cars painted with a frosted product but Larry has helped me to understand the dynamics of this paint. Thanks!
love this show every time i watch it I learn something new
I absolutely love how Larry finished this episode with the wise words
"The purpose of these cars is to get out and drive them"
DRIVE FTW
Good show once again. Not as usefull to most people, but very informative. Nice to see how the frozen paint "works". Thumbs up!
Another reason why I love this show is the music.
"He's the only guy that I would trust with one of my cars if it needed some real work." Sorry Larry.
That guy is a body shop guy, not a detailer. Two completely different disciplines.
It's not "absorbing" the light it's diffusing the light. Things are shiny because they will take a point of light and reflect a point of light, a matte finish will take a point of light and will scatter that point instead of reflecting it. It's the same concept of looking through frosted glass.
Working on that for next season. Thanks for the comment.
Blue Plast Dip!! Where's Fonzzy?
Frozen paint looks Stunning, Thank you for the great video !
It’s not easy to maintenance, for sure.
But that’s the challenge we all love 😉
Its a unique paint for a unique client...I think people who buy this type of paint understand the pro's ad con's of ownership. It's definitely cool looking paint though.... Thanks for the comment -Larry
Thank you for the kinds words! Wow. so nice. I really appreciate it.
what this whole video taught me once again is that Matte paint is still a very tough paint to be properly maintained. Go for matte wrap.
Maybe Drive Clean can make a video regarding car wraps? Pros and cons etc
this video has made me sold to vinyl wraps for life.
Great episode. It is not easy to produce such high quality content. Love the show.
My favorite Drive series.
Wow. I'm glad there wasn't a test after vid, because by reading all the comments, doesn't appear many were paying attention! :)
a great video on a boring irrelevant topic. i love this guy
thanks
Trying to get my head around this. So BMW have brought out an extremely expensive, unrepeatable, plasti dip paint? If I wanted a frozen finish I would just go buy plasti dip for a fraction of the price.
Correct. Its all BMW marketing which all the german fangirls will take as gospel law. Its just a plasti-dip effect.
Dude. This show freaking rocks!
So let me get this right. You can't polish it, wax it, fix scratches. And people are buying this.
Jon Vincent people also buy cars with only 2 seats, this isn't much different. style can be expensive and unpractical
Jon Vincent that’s part of the appeal I’m sure - in Americans’ minds - “can’t do any extra work with it” is the ideal situation, same reason why the automatic transmission became so popular.
Thank you!
-Larry

VirtualSuperSoldier Ok then *DON'T FUCKING BUY THAT COLOR*.
TheMidnightNarwhal LOL
Great Job again Larry. I learned a lot from this episode.

These videos are really informative can't wait to go back home to clean my soup
What is the citrus based bug cleaner you use in the video? And where can I get it?
Thanks,
Love these weekly videos!
interesting episode, i always wondered how you maintain this type of paint
Best addition to drive line up.
Again interesting. Not sold on frozen paint finish.
Good tip on bug spray. Where do you get it?
these are a very rare and expensive paint option that only a very small percent of us will ever come in contact with. i believe that a video on cleaning the engine bay, wheels or interior would be more useful to more of us. great video though
I am about to order a m4 cs and I am so torn if I should get the Isle of Man frozen green or go with gloss metallic Brooklyn grey
Wow these drive clean episodes really are informative.
Can you guys make a video about cleaning the interior of a car? especially one with high gloss wood trims.. they are such a pain to clean properly as it is very to keep them free of scratches.
I freaking love this show!

Would love to see this revisited with new products and technologies invented since
Thank you Drive!!! this is education!!!
My Triumph bike has a matte finish. It looks awesome. Harder to maintain but well worth it.
Thank you!
frozen grey is one of the best looking colors ever on a M3 but after seeing this I don't think I would be up for it. It's just so much more to worry about.
PPF is a MUST for these paints. Larry will never admit it, because then you won’t need to buy his products.
Saw an M3 with black frozen paint, was not a new one and looked fairly good!
you should create another channel called ammo, for the detailers out there. my top tip
Great job mate. Keep of the good work.
SOLD.
really learn alot from drive clean
I LIVE IN THIS TOWN!!! PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU COME BACK!!!!
Very interesting and informative film. But it makes me want a frozen finished car even less than before. They really sound a PITA to keep nice.
GREAT SHOW!!!!!!!
BMW: Don't touch our engines, don't touch our paint.
the question i get constantly at work is how do i take care of my black paint. any tips that are specific to dark paints that are highly reflective?
Beautiful M3 and great video!
I agree that with some light energy, heat energy is "tagged along" as well. But in this case it shouldn't make a obvious difference, perhaps a few degrees higher or so.
Idk if it mentioned it but, since it absorbs light doesn't that mean the car is heating up more due to the heat or what? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Do you need to use a different wash solution on frozen paint
Amaising, nice... and as far as the wrap being expensive, I bet you getting a new coat of frozen paint when you scuff it isn't going to be any cheaper, if your car that you wrap isn't your DD then chipping shouldn't really be a concern.
that looks beautiful!!! i wanna paint my e28 frozen black...or frozen red if they have it
Can a paint protection film be applied to frozen paint and will it still have the same frozen finish?
