      Depends.. I think if you embrace the lunatic in you , it will help you keep sane by being insane .. this universal paradox. I think if you lived your life without self awareness, one day would come and you will realize that your whole life you were a slave to your caged mind , and it will drive you completely out of your mind. But if you are a lunatic from the start , there is nothing that can surprise you. There is no point in being 'sane' in an 'insane' world. It's our nature to be spontaneous , if you always stop yourself from doing things simply because you think its ridiculous , or your mind tells you 'this is not normal , don't do it' .. first of all what is normal, and if that's what you're trying to be .'normal' then i have some news for you .. you're nothing more than a walking corpse in a world full of life, lose yourself in it , you are not what you think you are , you are not the ego , you are what you are , you are the Universe

      Arraik Cruor no. The meaning of this video.... is really nothing. It depends on our views. For most, its to entertain, for some (like you) its to make you cry. But in reality, the real meaning is none. It depends on the authors view and the publics view. None is more correct or wrong then the other. Good day sir ;)

      I was making a joke because it has some sadness to it. I know the video says there is no meaning. The universe just exists and we are part of the universe, so we just exist. The word meaning and the concept was created by humans.

    Give, give, give.

      I remember speaking to a security guard that works in my school, he asked about how i got into my current field (IT). I suggested maybe looking up a free program that will teach basic computer skills, certs and maybe an internship.However he figured since he was 29 that he was too old to intern and didn't want to look silly. I gave him a pep talk about how its never too late to do anything that captures your interest and that no one peaks at 30. There are people in there 40s who still feel lost, so dont feel bad. And he was extremely appreciative and told me he will never forget that and will keep that well in mind. Hearing that made me feel so good, I was so happy i could help.

      Jacky Linn I believe there is a god, just not from the Christian Bible, which was distorted and rephrased by man, it’s safe to say stuff which wasn’t suitable to have in it was taken, in fact, you can even trace back where did the word of god from the Bible came from to the very first religion, but who knows, I don’t doubt the existence of God or even the devil, but the shit they preach sounds wishy washy, stuff that even someone like me can come up with if I was preaching
      people are so compelled to their emotions, associating a symbol and it’s meaning as something they hold deeply, this doesn’t just go with religion

    • @Fernando-rw6vz
      @Fernando-rw6vz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jacky Linn and how is that a lie? If you’re adding existence to another life, then doesn’t this mean you have passed it on? it lives on, you contributed to it, ha, the “lies of man”, haven’t you seen it yourself all around you? Which is solid proof of what that comment you responded to

    "If you enjoy the time you wasted, it really wasn't a waste of time."
    Just saw that quote on a comment from the Optimistic Nihilism video by Kurzgesagt. What a great message. And, honestly, if we did have a purpose, wouldn't that be more morbid? I talked in therapy about this, my doctor told me to imagine a world where we have a purpose and it is clear: Imagine being born and told your purpose is to farm for your entire life, or you have a God he tells you your purpose is to entertain the other gods as they watch you suffer. The only true joy is in knowing nothing matters and embracing it.

I understand plenty of folks find their own personal comfort in another belief like God, among other things. The whole point of even having a belief is to make sense of your life. To give you a drive and a purpose. If you don't like it, then I'm sorry and I hope you find something that you do like, if you haven't already.

      In regard to truth(s) on a macro level and objectivity it’s almost undebatable that “they” are present in the Universe/Reality/the Temporal Sphere/[Insert synonymous name here] and that some(or all?) of “it” can be learned, discerned, observed and discovered via math, reason, logic, science, our sensory nervous systems, and technology. However higher individual meaning is sadly not an objective or eternal point, really it’s in the “grey area” of existence and unfortunately relative with perception mattering to an uncomfortable degree. This is alright though, makes forging one’s own meaning(or non-meaning) sort of fun. Sometimes you gotta unwind and relax, many times greatness happens during the journey not at the destination. Roll with the hits folks, peace and take care of yourselves ✌️.

    Something I found very interesting is that the show provided a situation which highlighted "purpose". The Meeseks were creatures which had a purpose, a single purpose which if they fulfilled they could be at peace or cease to exist. But if they didn't fulfill their purpose they couldn't escape existence. So if we had a purpose, would we not devout our entire lives to the purpose, failing at which we would be stuck in an eternal loop. Maybe thats why we don't need a purpose, the burden of not fulfilling a purpose is far greater than the joy of fulfilling one. Maybe the purpose of life is very personal and subjective. Each one is an actor on this great stage which is life.

      Never thought about it that way, thank you! Sometimes it is helpful to have a purpose or meaning for your life. To know why you are alive for.. gives a little bit of closure right. And the hard days are not for nothing... but I like the subjectiveness of a grander purpose. I just need to find mine.

      The first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success. On that basis we are almost always in collision with something or somebody, even though our motives are good.
      Most people try to live by self-propulsion. Each person is like an actor who wants to run the whole show; is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet, the scenery and the rest of the players in his own way. If his arrangements would only stay put, if only people would do as he wished, the show would be great. Everybody, including himself, would be pleased. Life would be wonderful. In trying to make these arrangements our actor may sometimes be quite virtuous. He may be kind, considerate, patient, generous; even modest and self-sacrificing. On the other hand, he may be mean, egotistical, selfish and dishonest. But, as with most humans, he is more likely to have varied traits. What usually happens? The show doesn’t come off very well. He begins to think life doesn’t treat him right. He decides to exert himself more. He becomes, on the next occasion, still more demanding or gracious, as the case may be. Still the play does not suit him. Admitting he may be somewhat at fault, he is sure that other people are more to blame. He becomes angry, indignant, self-pitying. What is his basic trouble? Is he not really a self-seeker even when trying to be kind? Is he not a victim of the delusion that he can wrest satisfaction and happiness out of this world if he only manages well? Is it not evident to all the rest of the players that these are the things he wants? And do not his actions make each of them wish to retaliate, snatching all they can get out of the show? Is he not, even in his best moments, a producer of confusion rather than harmony? Our actor is self-centered-ego-centric, as people like to call it nowadays. He is like the retired business man who lolls in the Florida sunshine in the winter complaining of the sad state of the nation; the minister who sighs over the sins of the twentieth century; politicians and reformers who are sure all would be Utopia
      if the rest of the world would only behave; the outlaw safe cracker who thinks society has wronged him; and the alcoholic who has lost all and is locked up. Whatever our protestations, are not most of us concerned with ourselves, our resentments, or our self-pity?
      Selfishness-self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our troubles. Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate. Sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, but we invariably find that at some time in the past we have made decisions based on self which later placed us in a position to be hurt. So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making.

    Rick and Morty taught me the meaning of life was to pass butter.........

  • @ShadowZZZ
    @ShadowZZZ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +320

    My favourite scene from Rick and Morty about the question of our purpose is, not with morty and summer, but where rick builds the robot, who then asks: "what is my purpose" and then rick replys "you pass butter" and then the robot looks down at him self and says "oh my god..." with disappointment. I think this shows that it is a good thing that we humans live for no absoute purpose. I mean, just image if there was a purpose of our exsistence, it would completely crush our individuality, it would make us unfree and make all other efforts completely futile and irrelevant. If you look at space and deeptime, there is also no purpose to be found: The universe will end in dark coldness, everything will be forgotten, millions of stars just simply shine for no purpose. In human history, there have been many wars fought with millions of deaths and much suffering, and almost most of it is already forgotten in the everyday life of all other humans who are alive. Asking for a purpose of life is like asking for the purpose of a mountain. We can explain of what matreial compounds the mountain is made off, how high it is, what natural events led to its exsistence but it would be ricidulous to ask for a meaning of that mountain. Just the same with life: darwinian evolution through natural selection and random gene mutation, best described in professor richard dawkins books, explains the HOW question, but makes the WHY question completely absurd and irrelevant, just as asking what colour jealousy has - the fact that you can phrase this question in the english language, does not make it a valid question. We are pattern seeking animals, that's what our minds demand, and many people fall into this trap. Now, this conclusion seems to take something away from us and it does: It removes an egocentrical view of life. That means we are bound to one another, and because there is no absolute purpose to our exsistence, that means that we can make our purpose ourselves. Thus, everything we do, think and create is meaningfull (for us alteast, and maybe even others). So it would be the best to simply be, have sex, Increase human and animal well being, be empathetic, study science, try to progress humankinds wealth/technology and survival in the future, read intellectual literture, listen to great music, look at gorgeous art, eat the most delicious food, work hard to achieve your passions and goals, educate and enlighten your fellow humans, enjoy life and try to undertand not just everything around you, but yourself. This makes the shackles of an ignorant, warcausing and ridiculous superstition like religion, which has been invented 2000 years ago by iron age peasents who didnt even knew the earth rotates around the sun, objectively wrong and morally false. The scriptures clames are untrue and have peached hate, oppression, preducise and ignorance for thousands of years. Free yourself from this insane mass delusion and dont be a blind sheep. To prove my last claims, I recommend the reader to read atheistic books from great minds like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris.

    • @brunoosti1
      @brunoosti1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Dream Eater OMG.. long time man. : ((
      After i went to the drugstore to buy my antidepressants and talked to the nurse guy there who was "addicted" to them (5 years and he couldn't skip the medicine) I decided not to take it, and go until i couldn't take it anymore. Not very wise move i'd say, be careful with that. And if you are on medicine already, you shouldn't stop taking it.
      The thing is that i've decided to face it and even let me be sad sometimes. Do things even if I didn't want to and try to move on, keep with life, search for stuff that would make me happy, take my head from inside of my own thoughts. Was not easy.. some days i'd eve feel pain around my neck and back of the head because of the bad feelings (this was so strange). I kept in touch with friend, went out to do stuff, even not wanting to, keeping my thoughts out of my head. After some time the "down" feelings started to fade out and my normal self came back again. Sometimes i feel a bit off.. but i let me be sad and look forward for new stuff and other happier days. I was very aware of my sadness and why i shouldn't be soo sad, even so, this simply takes over us sometimes. 8 years must be rough : (, i wouldn't say my experience applies to yours, after all, you've been dealing with this much more time and surly differently. I don't know what i could say to you, but if my advice helps, try facing it like something you are "obligated" to do when you are too sad to do it. Stay out of your head (making youtube videos surly is something that will help). Manage it like going to the gym: you don't really want to go out or do stuff, but you will do it, even if it's unpleasant at first. And allow you to be sad sometimes. There is nothing wrong with that. You just can't let it swallow you. Stay active, stay out of your head. For the most difficult moments i'd say manual work is the best way to keep thoughts out of your head. One thing my father said once that really helped a lot was "start doing things on "analogical" mode". If you start to pay attention on what you are doing instead of doing it automatically, your head gets out of itself and helps relief the "sad tension"
      Sorry for the long reply! I hope i can help you in some way. And remember, the drugs will help, but they make you addicted to that source of relief. You have to find other things that make you feel good, even if that is uncomfortable at first. GOOD LUCK MAN! LIFE ISN'T ALWAYS THAT GOOD, BUT WE HAVE TO SEE THROUGH THE BAD SIDE SO AS WE CAN ENJOY IT TO THE MOST. Be strong. Be active and never give up.

    • @muath1401
      @muath1401 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bruno Osti thanks for taking that time to help me, but I hate being addicted to anything so drugs won't help and believe it or not we don't have gyms where I live XD, but I will take your advice of finding something that makes me happy, again thanks for replying :)

    • @brunoosti1
      @brunoosti1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No problem! : ) i know how hard this can be. Don't give up, don't trust you brain at first if it tells you you don't like this new thing. Keep in mind that you will have to enforce your other self that is not depressed over the depressed brain, so as he can show up mor and, some day, take control. If you can go to a psychologist+psychiatrist. They can surly help. Sometimes its not a matter of taking action ourselves, but a subjetive chemical unbalance on our brains that can be out of our control.

It's helped me to be more adventurous in my life and bond more with family and friends, I'm closer to the people I know now more than ever because R&M made me see that life is fragile and fleeting. I live for in depth analysis' of Rick and Morty (Rick in particular) and this video was honestly so well made and gave me food for thoughts that I didn't even consider deep down, and man that fucking ending!! You don't just put Do you feel it and expect a fan not to cry, that's unrealistic! Uncalled for!!
    But in all seriousness, great video, I will sub to you.

  • @johannlothe

    I used to watch this show a lot when tripping on acid when I was younger. In my trips, I always had these moments where I sort of try to analyze and make sense of everything, be it the show or just my existence in general. There's just something bugging me, and I don't know what or why - but after a while, I had a "revelation". Not completely, but I was on to something.
    "Nothing makes sense, and maybe that's the sense I'm looking for - but shit, now I'm looking for it again."
    I could be thinking like this whilst watching Rick and Morty - and then I go: "Crap, I need to let this go and to try to pay attention to the show. What's going on here, what's happening, what's the context, what's the point of it, what am I supposed to understand?"
    I keep trying to make sense of it all (and failing), and all of sudden there's a sudden fart noise, and I laugh instantly and hysterically - and that existential dread fades a bit. Stop trying to make sense of it all. It's me. I'm the source. The point of life is simply to be alive. Enjoy it for god's sake. I could even tell myself that whilst tripping, and even though I'm "right", explaining it, putting it into words - is the opposite of the "answer" I'm looking for. It's not an answer at all, and if I stop looking for it, I'm there - or rather here. This is it.
    I found the "nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everyone is going to die, come watch TV", really comforting. It tells me to stop caring so fucking much. To stop taking life so seriously. The thought, the answer, is not the answer. It's the initiative. The letting go. It really helped me in life.

    I saw this a number of times, I love it. I can't agree with it more. I think what bothers me still despite feeling the same way, is that happiness is ephemeral. You can spend all the money you want, enjoy your time with family or experience new experiences, but still it's short-lived... at least for me. I'd like to find out what makes me happy for more than a moment.

    • @BrannonNaito
      @BrannonNaito 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simplex good question. Maybe I should appreciate that journey a bit more.

    • @VanillaBourbon
      @VanillaBourbon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Brannon Naito I think life is better that way, with just moments of happiness. I mean there are ways to be generally happy and satisfied, but it doesn't give the same magnitude of happiness as what you call a short-lived moment. If life were a constant euphoric rush of enjoyment and fulfillment, then you'd eventually get numb to it and take it for granted. The fact that sadness and despair are codependent on happiness and hope is extremely integral to life. Being able to experience both sides of the spectrum allows you to appreciate the good side much more. That way, when you find yourself deep in depression, you subconsciously set a goal to find your way back to happiness, whatever way you can. Some people do this through positive means like surrounding yourself with friends and family, while others use more destructive methods such as drug and alcohol abuse. At the end of the day, the goal is the same, just choose your path.

      Benjamin Dameron Benjamin Dameron, it can't be proven that rick doesn't love his grandkids (morty at least)... He didn't even flinch when morty said he dropped his collar while they were floating in space.
