I remember the first time seeing/holding one was when my classmate in college got one, eventually the appstore was a thing and tap tap dance, and a "beer/drink" app was a big deal.. and Safari was such a great thing over the browsers most phones had, and it sounded pretty darn good!
Don't think I've ever been this early. Can remember when I was a kid and looked at the iPod Touch thinking I can get it as my 1st phone only to find later that I can't use it as an actual phone, this makes me feel nostalgic
😬greg you make me feel ancient. I was 23 years old when that thing came out. To this day I have never owned a single apple product, but owned various other brand mp3 players back in the day. I remember having a 3gb mp3 player that I could put hundreds of songs on. Crazy how low the bit rate of mp3 files were back then. Now days I'd be licking to get a single album in that amount of space
Love this time where we didn't take music for granted.. Now u can just stream any music anywhere with wireless ear buds... those days where one had to copy music on the device and connect the wired headphones... Current gen people wont know how big this was..
As an audiophile enthusiast this ver of iPod touch had the best DAC of every iPod touch ever released. Wolfson chip they said. Warm and pretty good tonality with meaty mids vocals. I also have iPod touch gen 2 and 3 and 4. Which were very bad sounding thin and weird acoustically
@@GregSalazar you should try the headphone jack. With a good pair of Modern Headphones they sound brilliant. The drawback compared to modern high end audio player is the music file resolution cant that high. Try convert your high res music to ALAC format. Thats one of the best format and highest bitrate that could supported on this iPod Touch.
I didn't have the first gen Ipod Touch but I did have the 2nd gen back when I was in college and man did I love that thing! At the time, smart phones were extremely rare to come across and it was more or less the closest thing I had to one. After I got a smart phone I pretty much never used it and it just stayed in my car where I had it plugged into my stereo. I didn't update the firmware for years and I remember when I finally tried to, it absolutely bricked it.
Ha I still have my original 20gb ipod somewhere. That thing was awesome back in the day. I could fit all 5000 of my songs on it and never hear the same song twice in one year.
My memories of the ipod touch was learning of its existence when I worked as an Apple tech support agent, man time flies. One thing of note was that there were people who got hired there as tech support who had never opened up a PC b4, people who didn't know anything about hardware, who had never physically touched anything from the inside of a computer b4...that's who they were hiring.
All they need to learn is to navigate Apple's software lol including connecting Apple computers, They do nothing an average user couldn't do if they took an interest.. Even account and lock issues can be done over the phone which is what they would do anyway. hardware issues are just packed off to the labs where the real technicians live. Those guys in store are just glorified sales people, Anything technical they can't sort out with simple software adjustments or phone calls to head office is handed to the people in white coats.
Bought my first iPod (Classic) 20GB U2 Special Edition back in 2005. It still works as I far as I know. I have also used a old iPhone 8 and uninstalled everything and filled all 256GB with music to use like an iPod touch. Moved to using an iPhone back in 2010 and syncing all my music to that.
I had three iPod Touchs (4th, 5th and 6th gen) before getting my first phone in 2016 (iPhone SE, what a classic). The smaller size still resonates with me as the iPhone 13 mini is my daily driver until it breaks.
The only iPod I ever owned was a fifth generation original iPod. I used it pretty strictly for music, though it could also play video. I saw no need to "upgrade" because by the time I stopped using the iPod, I had a smartphone that could do more.
I had a second or third gen in middle school. I remember it fondly because I had all the popular games on it: angry birds, cut the rope, that one where you control a bird sliding along hills, and fruit ninja. I couldn't afford to buy all the music I wanted and I couldn't source music from other sources because we didn't have a computer at home yet. I had like three albums on there. Good memories for sure.
Wouldn’t most of the issues you were having connecting be down to the devices time and date settings? I know you don’t want to change it but if you did you may have more function. I still remember using the old click wheel HDD iPods well, they were insane for their time. This is the golden era of Apple we’re looking at with this iPod touch.
I'm loving this Retrospective series. While it's not the same, my "iPod" moment happened with the Samsung Galaxy SII. To this day I still think that was the perfect phone.
So, being just a little bit older than you, I was a Sophomore in high school when these debuted. I had an iPod but I can’t remember which one it was at the time but I was enamored with iPod touch. I was also too poor to have one until a few years later haha
ipod touch 2nd gen is what I've got, it's been modded to include multi-tasking, function as a USB drive and it even has siri.... which crashed often...... and ran very slow this is back when they innovated instead of idea theft
1st gen iPod touch: great as "iPhone but without the phone part." Terrible as "iPod but without the storage" (at least back in the day. Now it's as much of a relic as equivalent Android devices) I still use my modded 6th gen iPod classic and it's still a fantastic mp3 player. My sister had a 1st or 2nd gen iPod touch and she hasn't used it in years. I love using an mp3 player separate from my phone because I don't have to worry about draining the battery on it or having to buy and carry a type C to 3.5mm adapter because they've decided modern phones don't need a headphone jack anymore and you need to buy bluetooth headphones and remember to charge them. Especially when travelling. I drive a 2016 Nissan Frontier, so I don't have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, and it still recognizes my iPod plugged in via USB, and it's much more convenient than trying to control my phone over Bluetooth
Remember I got it when it came out and was world changing! Then I thought imagine it had a phone icon and message icon it would be amazing! Well here we are in 2024 ❤
Never had one didnt really care about listening to music on the go at the time. I used to have stereos with big speakers at home that i used to torment my neightbour with. 😁 10 years ago i moved far away so i left my stereos among other stuff to a friend of mine. 🙂 So no more tormenting the neighbours. 😃 Now days i listen to music with my wireless headphones. At home i use my PC or my TV for it and on the go i use my phone.
I had a terminal app for the touch and could do school work from anywhere I had WiFi access. War driving was a hobby. And Bluetooth came as a software update.
I'm honestly impressed that the iPod connected to your Wifi network! A number of older devices at best have WPA or at worst, only have WEP. A very nice retrospective. I liked the look at a time period when Apple went for a more polished look in the OS and icons rather than the flat minimalistic look they use today. Also on a personal note, I never had an iPod - didn't have much use/need for a portable MP3 player. I did, however, get an iPad Mini in about 2013 or 2014 and it turned out to be very useful as a portable e-reader/web device/media player. I've since retired it in favor of a newer iPad.
I had one of these. But I did sell it to a friend, I really didn't have use for it after a while. One thing I can say though is the DAC on it was quite good. I used to use it in my car all the time when I was in college.
Any luck getting one of these to connect to a computer? I have a 1st Gen 8 GB on 1.1.4 that me and my son have just turned on. I'm trying to take off some pictures before I give it to him but I only have a windows computer and the DCIM folder is empty.... any ideas? I have tried running itunes 7.7 on a windows XP virtual machine and can connect via. itunes but can't access the photos. I can't seem to update it either.
oh damn the mp3 player days........ I had a 3rd gen regular Ipod and that was my baby for years and years. I first owned a Walkman disc player that had anti-skip tech that was mindblowing at the time lol
I had pieces of an ipod touch 1g....lol i was able to cobble the pieces in to a fully working Ipod touch 1g! lol, 8gb unit with a 16gb backing! haha the battery blew up, so i soldered in a new battery and it worked, but over time the screen gave out so i replaced the screen, then one day it totally gave out. Just stopped working.... i still have an Iphone 2g, an iphone 4 and 5 just collecting dust,a sn just found a 4th gen ipod nano that needs a new battery at the thrift store for $4.99 lol... they are fun toys.
Still use the 5th generation ipod. The battery does not last long even when it was new. You could get about 2-3 hours out of it before needing another charge at best. Just remember to time out the backlight quickly.
I still have my second gen Ipoh Touch. I did get a first gen on eBay. I also got a 3rd gen and 4th gen iPod touch on eBay. I used to have a 4th gen iPod touch but lost it.
I absolutely hate big phones. I mostly use it if I’m not at home and on the go so I wanna use it with one hand and not worry about it falling. The only option is the 13 mini and I will hold onto it as long as I can.
Its 2024 and i cant get my email right with this, wifi, or bluetooth! Somebody help. Im not try to factory reset it but im having too much dificulty transfering pics from this ipod to my S24 Ultra!
Set the time manually to actual time/date to enjoy some of the web. While most modern websites wont work, you can find some success. Bad time = certificates wont work.
Likely not the processor preventing it from loading websites. It's probably the browser version. I bet a lot of modern sites wouldn't load on a 15 year old version of desktop safari running on new hardware.
i couldn't have afforded one of those back then, but i had a SanDisk Sansa Fuze instead that i used until about 2017 or so when its storage completely broke and the device pretty much became read-only, even with an mSD card. it was a cool thing though and the Rockbox custom firmware arguably made it superior to iPods for the sole purpose of listening to music. but i guess the iPod Touch series in particular had never been about making the best music player or the best anything, really
I wish I still had my iPod, I had a 4th gen and wish I wouldn't have traded in to gamestop among other good things I traded in that I regret. I mean, I have my iPad Pro, but it's inconvenient to lug around, and my phone doesn't have a freaking headphone jack which I absolutely hate.
A classic now. One reason you can’t access the websites is because it’s got a wrong date, you should be able to set the correct date and you’ll be able to go online easily.
