Just got them 650s today and you were right. Does not disappoint! The comfort level is the best I've tried so far, the sound stage is not suuuper wide, but feels natural. It is the most "natural" sounding headphones I have (T20rp, m40x), and I love them. They lack a bit in the low-end, but it really depends on the recording, which just shows that they accurately represent the recording.

Hi, could you talk about the sound improvements?, i have m40x's and i'm thinking about an upgrade, are there big differences?
Bought my 598s for 250 in 2012. Hard to believe they still can be compared to those m560s. They hold up well, despite being horrifically ugly in their original tan and burlwood lol
The 598 (the open ones) where the "oohhh now I get it" headphones for me. Didn't even need to try it side by side with my previous headphones... Massive difference.

I just upgraded to an HD 6XX from my HD 598 SE, and I'd say this is a spot-on description of the sound quality difference between the two.

Paul Ji Not exaggerated and very natural feeling. Everything about the sound is comfortable and immersive. They aren't made to flash big lights in front of your face and put on a big show. Instead they pull back a curtain and let you drift into the music naturally. It's pretty hard to describe but I fall asleep at my desk with them far too often.
I've got a pair of hd650's paired with a fiio e12 amp and I love them!
It would be hard NOT to love them haha!

Review for 598HD
Everyone says that we need to do mod for ( having more bass to change the sound quality ). I would say if you don't like the sound signature of the Sennheiser headphones. And you are keeping it in a shelf for a really long time OR ready to throw it away now itslef after realizing it's not that really worth for that much of hype they have given through reviews, comments., Etc. Give it a last chance to try after remove all the white coloured papers on the outer diaphragm. Which means usually to damp the sound they will use the white coloured paper above the transducer or driver except the cone area. So what we have to do is. We have to remove the white coloured paper which is pasted over the diaphragm. Once you did on the both side(left and right ) of the headphone. Those who complaint there is lack of bass. They will come to know to enjoy the music we no need to have that much of bass. where usually all the other headphones have.( take note , am also enjoy the amount of bass which is produced by JBL speakers/subs, which usually can achieve 34hz frequency range ). And you can see how there is an increase in spatial cue's / It produce a bit of more environmental sound, means you can feel the atmosphere changing when the actors moving from one room to another room ( though don't expect too much as surround sound effects ). Though sound is subjective, I think you can try it before give it up. Last but not least it will change the sound signature to somewhat enjoyable. I get to try this option, because I saw a TH-cam video where they go through the industrial visit of Sennheiser company in Germany. There they are actually testing the dynamic capability of all there transducer to produce the required frequency / sound signature "with the entire driver, not just with the cone exposed". I own both the 598 and the 650. When I switch between the two the difference is immediately noticeable.
The 598's are definitely brighter. The 650's are darker and as a result sound warmer than the 598.
would you say 6xx have more bass? I like my 598 but would like a bit more bass, trying to figure out if I want to upgrade to 6xx or not.

Interesting review. I bought 650's because of your review against the 700's. I am getting the NFB-11 to push them replacing my Fiio E10k (which surprisingly does a decent job BTW). I'm now looking for good closed back phones to replace my Audio Technica M30. I loved those headphones until I matched them up to the 650 - so now I'm developing holes in my wallet.

TH-cam has been draining holes in my wallet as well! As far as closed back headphones I really liked the HD598CS (closed version) for the price. Pretty affordable and comfortable.
I'm looking for closed and if at all possible, something on par or better than the 650 and very comfortable - if that can actually happen.
If u have enough $$, go for one of Audeze (model depending on budget) or Beyerdynamic T5p. Fostex could also work. AKG K550 is a Budget Choice.

@@sebo123159 The 6XX has much better bass. It extends noticably lower than the 598. It's cleaner too. It'll require a little more power from your amp to reach the same volume as the 598. I definitely recommend the upgrade!

You compared the key feature between HD650s and HD598s. Focus. Using senses by experience. I own both, well replace de 650s by 660Ss. But 598s are more enjoyable all around.
I am a new sub and I really enjoy the videos that I have watched so far. You seem to provide really valuable insight without being super hyped about something. Just a small comment (and I am probably in the minority on this opinion), but in this video in particular the static / hiss in the background music was a bit annoying / distracting to me. Again, great videos and I look forward to seeing your future content!

Not being a headphone snob, I appreciate the less technical, more "natural" approach to reviews regarding products that, due to variations in each persons' aural "fingerprint" and audio source, are inherently subjective. This actually makes reviews even more necessary and worthy of a few minutes attention. Comparisons such as yours that essentially use the hd 650 as the median ( I own a pair ) have been helpful. I am awaiting your MP 1060 review as I have been in the market for a Planar set but balk at the cost of HiFiMan models
I like reviewing things like this too. Its more like having a conversation or telling a friend about something. Not to mention the HD650s make a GREAT benchmark to compare everything else to.

About the aftermarket pad thing for the Monolith m560: If you get some doubletack, that will keep pads on them pretty well.

Also from another reviewer that I follow. Apparently the sound doesn't change on the m560's when you switch out pads on it. Now I don't own them but it's just what I've heard, from one person.

I bought a pair of 598SE like new for about 40dlls from a guy who did not nothing about them. He was selling other headphones and he was increasing the prices for the other HP for being BT or from popular brands like sony. I should have haggle haha.

I'm struggling to decide between hd598 sr and beyer dt 880 250 ohm. Dt880 is like 30dollar expensive than 598 here in Japan right now. I love how hd700 sound. It cud be my perfect headphone, except it's too expensive. Love that little crisp bit on the top end. Dt990 has too much highs. Between 598 and dt880, which one is closer to the hd700 sound? Haven't properly listened to 880 yet.

I'm seriously thinking about getting a pair of 650s this spring. The price on Amazon has fluctuated a lot. I'm waiting until I can afford to pick up better amplification at the same time (a Schiit Modi/Magni stack, probably the Modi Uber so I can run an optical input in from my TV). I know you can't listen to everything, but I was wondering if you have any impression on the Philips Fidelio X2s, which I am using now? (They are far easier to drive well then the 650s.) They are in the middle on price; generally available for about $250 (the price of the new Sennheiser 599s that replace the 598s), though I clicked on an Amazon coupon and got them for $198. Many reviewers (including Tyll at Inner Fiderlity) thought they rivaled the Sennheiser 600s/650s and they have great bass for open backs (listening to John Entwistle on them is nirvana), though they are not basshead phones. Nonetheless, I am curious to hear the 650s. BTW, when I get the 650s, I don't want to use Sennheiser's stock 10 foot cable--any recommendations on a shorter replacement?
I personally just use a cheap amazon cable with my HD650s since cables get a lot abuse in the studio. I personally haven't heard the X2 but I have heard good things about them. That being said the cult-following of the HD650 speaks for itself haha.

I have both the 598 and 650 cans paired with a Schiit Audio Magni 2 and Modi 2 Uber. I'd be interested in having you do a comparison between the 650 and the 600, because that's the real line that a lot of people have in a very favored opinion/stance - it's either one or the other clearly. So, to hear your take on which one you'd prefer and why; after a side by side, would be great to listen to. Then I'd like a full review and comparison on the 700 and 800S cans.
That would be really cool. I've been asking around to see if i can find a loaner of the 600 and 800. If that happens I'll definitely be able to do a video.

Great review I had to sub, I love the approach used here! I too am a 650 owner and love them. I do also have the X2's and I got a great deal on the HD800s for me that's my end game but I still love all 3 for different listening experiences off the Schiit Jot. I was waiting for affordable Planars then Monoprice delivered. I haven't listened to them, and I was undecided between the M560 and the 1060 but I decided on the M1060s should be here in a few weeks time. Have you finally listened to the 1060?

I never understood why the 650's are almost 100 dollars more than the 600's.
Sound wise I would say the HD650 is $100 better than HD600 but that's my preference. : )

DMS3 TV tbh hd 650 is better for young people and hd 600 are better for older people because there ability to hear the frequency gets less over age means hd are end game headphones for older people and hd 650 for people in there teens to late 20s

Great comparison. I just bought the 650s for my birthday along with a Schiit Valhalla 2. I'm wondering though, would the DAC in my phone (Galaxy S8) be good enough for the 650s or would i get better quality out of a separate DAC?

What do you think between HD650 and Philips Fidelio X2?
i've owned both headphones, both have great bass, the fidelios being punchier. Both have great treble, hd650s having a cleaner treble. The hd650s may sound slower when directly compared to the fidelio x2s, precisely why the first time around i kept the fidelio x2 and returned the hd650. However, I bought another hd650 later on, and in the long run the hd650 stayed because of the amount of detail they can portray while i gave my fidelios away as a gift. The Fidelio even though fun for occasional listens, in the long run the lack of detail compared to the hd650, especially once i started upgrading my dac and amps, became more obvious to me.
I am concerned about the self adjusting headband how strong is it? I mean how durable is the elastic material in there?
I would love to see you do a comparison review between the Sennheiser HD 650 and the HD 600.

Charly85 650 is worth every extra penny. Just the Groove won’t be enough, they are DACs. You still need a decent amp.
If you like HD650, you will probably like the Sennheiser Momentum 2 over ear,

Question for you, I am looking at possibly getting the Hifiman HE400S (S specifically). Have you had any listening time with those? I know you have the HE400, but i'm wondering what the difference is like sound wise...
I haven't heard the S or I versions but i've heard that they are MUCH more comfortable than the normal HE-400 and in some cases better sound. Head-Fi has some great articles explaining the sound.
How does metal music sound on the M560? Also, have you tried the Fostex t40rp mk3? If so, how do the two compare?

DT880 (600ohm model) is great. Highs are slightly elevated but over all its an excellent headphone.

Gábor Mészáros depends on the amount of bass u want. If you want a REALLY neutral one go for 600. 650 is largely the same with a slightly boost to the low end, thus adding a bit of musicality.
Hd600 are not completely neutral, not akg k702 Annie level neutral...they are slightly warm. Both hd600 and hd650 have warm sounds. Hd650 being a step up warmer than hd600. Hd600 still has great bass with a lot of detail, hd650 just has tad bit more extension in the bass , for me it gets tiring over longer periods.
Another headphones people should definitely consider is the AKG K712s. They cost about as much as the HD650s.

The M560 ear cushions are too small for my ears. It hurts. I put on the Sony 1000 pads and love how it came out. I am thinking about the 700 but probably no. The budget won't allow the 650s. Those would be very nice. I have an NFB 11, and 15. And the Emotiva A100 Bas-X so drive is no problem. Like your videos much. I watch Z reviews too.
I didn't really enjoy the 650. I found the treble to be a bit too dark.

I bought new hd 6xx and I really don't like them . I love the 598s and I think they are much better than 6xx. Hd 6xx is dark veiled, thick ,sharp. 598 is smooth ,open and sweet and dynamic.
Btw I am driving 6xx with topping nx4 and it has enough power.

I'd say you should just go for the hd650. The wait time for the 6xx is ridiculous. Either way though, I would go for it.

Can you amp up the bass 15 Db or so without distortion on the 598? Or_ can you take the 30-60htz bass, amp it up to 7+ Db and bring the mids down 7 Db and then put the overall volume up pretty high?

ATH-R70x ( which sort of reminded me of the M560's ) is also super comfortable even if the pads are circular shaped., very light weight and the clamp is snug/perfect. Terrific sound.

I dont understand the praise that the HD 650s get. I got some 4 months ago to replace my AKG Q701s and then proceeded to cry as i had wasted almost 400 Canadian dollars on them. they arnt more comfortable, have less detailed sound overall (the Sennheiser veil that everyone has a hard on for), they dont have a wider sound stage and they are harder to drive what am i missing? the build quality is negotiable the senns feel more sturdy but hallow if i drop them i would be afraid they would shatter the AKG felxy band is basically indestructible plus i just looked on amazon HD 650 500 CAD$ Q701 400 $CAD can anyone explain?
I don't know what you're using as an amp but I can tell you that part of why HD650's are so beloved is because they scale so well. Meaning that they continue to perform better and better with increased quality of amplification. Depending on what you're plugging them into you're going to be more or less impressed with them. I personally like their sound signature in general but I'm not blown away by them until they're being fed by a good amp with a good source.

How bad are the 650 for gaming?
Well depends. I played Far Cry 3 with HD 558, which is a significant downgrade from 650. I once ranked 58 worldwide tho, coz they have good soundstage and imaging, which helps you position your enemies. 650 are better than 558 in every way.
Incase you were still wondering, I used to use HD 598's for my daily driver until I broke them. Them being open back alone gives you a slightly better sound stage for positional audio. I paired them with Razer Surround for virtual 7.1 (Program you can download for free on Razer's website) and they worked great. Footsteps and the like tend to fall into higher frequencies so any "lack of bass" people mention as a disadvantage just doesn't register to me. They sounded amazing and gave me the edge I needed.
I can only imagine the 650 would be on par or slightly improve on that. Sennheiser also has a gaming DAC/Headphone amp you can buy to give you arguably the best virtual surround aswell, as per reviewd.
