      I get the wool from various places. My needles mostly come from Felt Alive (website), but some are also from Dream Felt on Etsy (and I get the felting pads and some wool from both of those places too). I also get wool online from Sarafina Fiber Art. And sometimes I have purchased wool from various other sellers on Etsy as well (I can't remember all of them).
      The eyes I use come from various places on Etsy. Some are clear "safety eyes," which have a pupil already and I simply paint the iris color whatever I want. But many are glass cabochons which I paint myself. I search Etsy for these parts (which I have purchased from various sellers as well).
      I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

    I love the finishing you did on the hair. Can you explain the process. Most of the tutorials leave the short haired animals looking fuzzy instead of like they have hair. Yours is perfect. Also what is wool batt vs wool roving?

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you :) The top layer is a fine, soft wool roving with fairly short fiber length. I separated small sections of this wool using my fingers rather than scissors (each section was about one inch long and half an inch wide) and adjusted them so that they were thin and flat and laid them on the body in the direction/orientation the dog's fur would naturally grow. Then I simply felted these sections onto the body, which gives a realistic look since this breed of dog has a smooth, short coat.

    Your work is absolutely fabulous! All the details are incredible! Can I ask why do details in core wool before adding color, don't you loose the details? I am just enthralled by your work! Do you have any other videos of dogs you do?

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Eugenia! The only details in the core wool have to do with shape and musculature, and they really could be done in any wool. I only added a very fine/thin layer of colored wool on top, so the shape and muscle details were not lost. The face did use a fair amount of black and dark brown wool for shaping details. This was a wool batt which felts very easily into shape without leaving lots of loose fibers (just like the core wool). One of the main reasons I use the core wool for so much of the body is because it felts really quickly and easily. The wool roving that I added for a lot of the apricot color is fine and although it can also form shapes, it takes a lot more effort. It also tends to have more loose fibers.
      But, inevitably as I felt I sometimes start details that I either don't like or need to change, and so I add more wool on top, and then more details. It is a process, and every animal progresses slightly differently.
      Unfortunately I don't have any other videos at this time, except perhaps a few short videos on my Facebook page that go over adding wool roving for the appearance of longer fur (unlike on the smooth coat of this mastiff).

    Whenever I try to layer the layers just come apart! And if I try and get them to stick they make a big dimple. :\

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the dimples might be caused if the body/core of the sculpture is not firm enough. If you felt more tightly and get a denser base to layer the top coat on (i.e. stab it a lot more before adding the top layers), it shouldn't dimple, and the layers should hold better as well. Best of luck! :)

    Is the wool you use harvested Cruelty Free?

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi there Char, I appreciate you concern, and I will do my best to answer your question.
      The wool is clipped from the live sheep (like getting a hair cut). It does not harm the sheep to have their wool trimmed. This is typically done once a year (although there may be some breeds of sheep that require shearing twice a year). They are usually sheared in the spring, which allows them to be cooler throughout the summer, while keeping their warm wool throughout winter.
      Regarding the way a specific person treats the sheep while doing the shearing, it is impossible for me to know. I understand that cruel people exist in this world, and I hate the thought that someone might handle the sheep too roughly when shearing, but there is no way for me to know FOR CERTAIN whether a sheep was handled inhumanely during shearing. I can say that the American Wool Council states that rough handling which might injure a sheep is unacceptable. Additionally, the sheep actually NEED to have the wool removed regularly for their own health and well being: takingstock.asas.org/?p=12683 These sheep have been selected and bred for wool production over centuries. They are dependent on humans for the care of the wool coats, and are unable to shed their wool on their own (just as there are a number of dog breeds which require regular trimming of their coats, rather than simply shedding). I'm sure you've seen some of the many videos online telling the story of a dog that requires grooming but was left uncared for. If you haven't, here is just one example: th-cam.com/video/xeWs06bk-HQ/w-d-xo.html Similarly, to properly care for the sheep, they must be sheared regularly. Shearing of sheep is not inhumane or cruel. Unfortunately, there are some cruel people in the world. I truly hope that anyone who is found abusing sheep or any other animal would be prosecuted.

    • @kreationsbykrysta2134
      @kreationsbykrysta2134  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not much of the colored wool (maybe 1/2 oz). And maybe 8-10 ounces of core wool? I am not totally sure. I buy core wool by the pound and usually have a couple pounds on hand so I always have enough. It makes it difficult to estimate how much I use though. I should have weighed him when he was done! ;) Sorry I can't be more helpful with this question.

      If you mean how much for the supplies, there are actually some minimal cost beginner kits on Amazon ($10 or less--just search for "needle felting"), which would let you try it and see if you like it. Some come with wool, needles and a felting pad, some seem to have only wool and needles. But there are also kits available on Etsy and Sarafina Fiber Art, which are nicer than the ones on Amazon. I buy all my supplies separately since I need large quantities. But the kits might be great for you to try felting.
      If you're asking about the mastiff, it is already sold. Prices are available on my Facebook page facebook.com/pg/krystaskoolkreations/notes/?ref=page_internal

      I apologize for any frustration this video has caused, but this wasn't intended to be an in depth tutorial. It took over 40 hours for me to complete the sculpture. That is far too long for a video, therefore I opted to use time lapse photography. This allows someone to see the process from start to finish, which is all that I had intended. Many people have never heard of needle felting, and this video was meant to foster an appreciation for this form of art.
      Creating a tutorial takes much more time on the part of the creator, and greatly slows down the time to completion of the piece. This item was a commission and I was not willing to extend the the time it would take for the customer to receive their purchase. However, setting up a camera to film a time lapse video does not interfere with the progress, thus I chose to film and share the video in hopes it would be entertaining and enjoyable for viewers.
      Again, I apologize that it caused you any frustration in an attempt to follow along, as this was never my intention. I do hope to create an in depth tutorial in the future.
