The Making of the Needle Felted Retriever Puppy

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 ธ.ค. 2024
- This video combines accelerated and time-lapse recording of me needle felting the retriever puppy from start to finish. It is about 18 hours of needle felted work condensed into 14 minutes.
This puppy is my annual free giveaway item for 2018. Enter to win through May 13, 2018 at KreationsByKrysta/
Materials Used:
A FOAM PAD
It doesn't have to be foam, there are other options out there as well. Just make sure it is for needle felting. You need a some sort of surface to work on that will prevent your needle from damaging the table-- or breaking the needle!
A FELTING NEEDLE
40T is my favorite, but please NOTE that these needles do break from time to time, so buy more than one. A 36T is less likely to break, but will not give as nice of a finish and doesn't grab the wool as perfectly. But it can be useful in thick, dense areas, or to attach legs to the body, etc. However, the 40T can be used for the entire project, as long as you are careful.
WOOL
I used almost entirely natural core wool roving on this project (probably 1 or 2 oz).
The paw pads, nose, mouth and edge details around the eyes are black wool (less than 0.5 oz.).
And I added some tannish wool as accents on the top of the puppy's back, tail, ears etc. (a very small amount-- maybe 1 gram)
OPTIONAL
On this puppy I also used clear safety eyes (6 mm size) which are glued in place with tacky glue. I like to use the safety eyes because they give a shine to the eyes and I can paint the back side of the eye whatever color I need for a given animal. But you could simply make the eyes out of black wool instead (like the nose).
I did opt to use wire (18 gauge floral wire which I then wrapped with chenille stem "pipe cleaners") inside the front legs and tail, but on something this small, and in a sitting pose, that is not absolutely necessary. The reason for the chenille stem is that it grips the wool easily as you wrap the wool around the wire.

Never in a million years did would I ever have thought that 'needle felted' meant taking wool and stabbing it with a special needle approximately 80 billion times while periodically putting more wool on top of where you're stabbing it to make things. I thought it was just a weird fabric that was sewn in a way you couldn't see the seams. That is awesome. Very sweet puppy too.
I know right?!
This is also how felt is made.
:) Thank you!
@@kreationsbykrysta2134 no matter how many times I ‘stab’ it, I believe *you* are a true artist at heart to end up with a tiny lifelike pup!
@@notefromjan Thank you!
As a newbie to felting, this tutorial actually made my heart skip a beat!! So much beautiful detail, and it’s mesmerizing to watch it come to life in fast motion!! I can’t wait to give this a try… slowly but surely!!
His/hers : a cute puppy
mine: a deformed seal
I like seals........ I just may make one ;)
@@Leslie_ann_h 😂
Seals are cute! Practice more and it may be a regular cute seal c:
I know right
The single video has leveled me up from Lv. 0 to Lv. 26!! I have yet to begin needle felting and have already been given XP in advance detailing!! Wow 👏 amazing!! More please 😊
AWWWWWW I am so glad to hear that! I am loading some new videos now!
it's strange how when some people needle felt, it looks like a fuzzy mess of wool. but when you do it, it looks like a clean sculpture. almost like clay.
It just depends on the look you want and the way you felt (how dense) I think. Some of mine are more fuzzy and furry :) Also I think the more coarse wools might give a fuzzier look. This puppy is most core wool roving which is very soft and lofty. It felts nicely to a smooth finish.
what a melting expression. lovely work
Hi Pam! I just watched your Voodoo Doll Livestream and it was so amazing! Id love to see you try a bird in the future if that's something you'd be interested in. Keep felting 😃
Oh thank you Pam! And I am sorry for the delayed reply-- I am just now becoming more active on TH-cam and realizing I have a bunch of comments with no replies! I feel bad about that and will try to keep better track of it in the future!
No problem at all, I am impressed you are catching up with them I know comments can get overwhelming sometimes
@@PamDuthie wow, yes for sure! I am trying my best :)
I am a very creative person and recently started to needle felt. Watching you gives me so much inspiration! I am totally amazed at your talent! Just beautiful!
Hey I just discovered needle felting and am in AWE.... wonderinf how a year into it someone also v creative and curious did with it ? If u can update that would b awesome !
Seven Cisdumb me too
I hope you are enjoying needle felting. Don't get discouraged and just keep at it. It gets easier. You can always look through my Facebook page photos and see all the things I have ever needle felted-- I think you will find there was a huge difference in the way they looked when I first started! I also have a few full length tutorials available on my channel now, if that might be helpful :)
at one point it just starts to look like you're viciously stabbing a tiny puppy, which is scary but also means you won at realism!
Sleepy Pup speaking from experience, it’s an emotionally conflicting art form
XD
I don't want to think of someone stabbing a puppy.
GIRL! That is some TALENT!!!!! Never would I in a trillion years be able to make that...
Thanks! :)
Stumbling upon this tutorial, I believe our Golden fur baby is sending me messages from the angelic realm.💜 She had to be put to sleep last month due to a tumour - so unexpected and so very sad. I still can’t believe she’s gone. 🐕
I am so sorry for your loss! :(
This little puppy is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE! I've just started needle felting but, I DON'T ever see myself having this skill at making something so realistic. I'm so envious ❤
You can do it! I have a few full length tutorials available on my channel now, in case it might help :)
Why doesn’t this have more views!? What you did is amazing! I haven’t seen a cuter pup in my lifeee
Wow!!! Thank you so much! You are so kind!
Im just amazed watching you take wool and turn it into a realistic little creature. I could watch you all day. How did you learn to do that. It truly is a gift!
Thank you very much! I think it took just a few little projects to get the basics down, especially since I started out with cute/cartoon like animals. But then, over the next year or so, I really shifted to more realistic animals. I have always done 2D realistic animal artwork, so it was a natural transition for me I suppose.
12:17 I think it was here that I went from total fascination for your talent to a feeling of discomfort, that you are poking this incredibly sweet puppy with a needle. Beautifully done.
Thank you! Yes, I suppose that could look weird!
This makes me want to needle felt in a larger scale! What a beautiful pup.
Thank you so much!
I also do Needlefelt, and I love your relaxed method of toes ...... I'll definitely have a go at that with my next Dog xxx Thanks, Claire xxx
Thank you so much! I am glad to hear it was helpful!
Beautiful work. He looks so real, like you could breathe life into him. I love how you capture his expression too.
Thank you!
Thank you for this fantastic video and sharing the amazing and beautiful result. The pup is gorgeous. I only started to felt yesterday and made a Highland cow which turned out okay for a first attempt.
Awesome! I hope you are enjoying it! I have a few full length tutorials available on my channel now :)
Разве это возможно???!!!! Смотрела, открыв рот.
Нет слов - потрясно! Здорово! 👋👋👋
My granddaughter and I watched this and were amazed! What talent you have, thank you so much :)
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it! :)
Wool roving is like liquid in your hands. Great camera angle; thanks for slowing down at crucial steps!
I am so glad it was helpful!
You did a wonderful job. My three fur babies were annoying me while watching this and I told them that I will trade them in for one of your beautiful creations...... my goodness I sound crazy lol
Maryvonne Adams *did they answered back?*
Amazing works of art. I first saw this kinda work(finished worked) on Martha Stewart show. This woman felted Martha's pet pugs and won a Bentley! I always wanted to learn. So 🐶♥️I am hooked! Mrs P. Mtz. Good job.
Wow! That's awesome!
this is one of the most amazing tutorials i have watched well done

A friend shared a different video on this art, I have never seen this before and it is amazing how sculptural this art is. Thanks for sharing and beautiful job!
Thank you so much!
*Imagine that after all the time the camera wasn’t recording*
Lol
this is so cool where do you get all this stuff.
I order supplies on Etsy. I have links to the supplies in the video description of my newer videos, like the fox, baby yoda and cat portrait.
Looks easy is it
Just a beautiful job you did on this puppy. So realistic and fantastic details. I love how you did the toes on the paws, thanks for showing that. I hope you don't mind a question :) Did you insert the wire you put in the legs and tail into the sculpture? Or did you just felt the pieces onto the puppy? Love your work, I subscribed!
Hi there! Thanks for your comments. I did insert the wire in the tail into the rump a bit, then I felted it on with wool. The legs do have wire as well, but they are attached to the body only by felting the wool of the legs to the wool of the body. Hope that helps!
Geweldig
Probably one of the coolest things I have ever seen...blew my mind. Awesome job.
Thanks!!! :)
This is great. I hope you do more. I could watch it all day.
Thank you so much! I have a few full length tutorials available on my channel now :)

I never knew of this Hobby never knew needle felting which I fell in love with it your puppy came out amazing beautiful I just wish you would have slowed the video down so we could have took in a closer look
You can slow down the playback speed to half or quarter, which may help you see more detail.
I am loading some better videos to follow along with this week!
You are so talented love the needle felting. I watch you and I would not be able to do this. The finished result is amazing.
Thank you so much! I have a few full length tutorials available on my channel now that are more helpful-- you should try felting if you are interested. It is really fun! :)

Oh thank you! I am so glad to hear that! If you decide you want to try it yourself, check out my other videos (fox, cat portrait, Yoda) for links to the supplies you will need. I definitely recommend trying needle felting-- it is a lot of fun and so very different than any other craft I have tried. I only discovered it about 5 years ago myself!
BRAVO! This is amazing and takes a True Artist to create something so stunning. Loved the Video, thank you
Thank you so much!
I planing on learning how to make these, ideally for pet memorials and Christmas ordainments, much like my grandmother made when she was still around.
Here’s too hopping I pick it up quickly!
I hope it goes well for you!
Amazing. I am going to watch all your videos, you are so talented. Can you please do a dog tutorial like the fire star cat one you did. Perhaps a Boston terrier or boxer. Thank you, I’ve learned so much watching your videos.
Thank you! I will try! I am planning to do a little terrier dog in the near future, but it might be something a bit scruffier than a Boston.
Needle felting kit arrived yesterday, can't wait to try it out since I have exams today and tomorrow! Haha
How did it turn out?
@@Snj1705 I forgot that I created this comment lol...but I tried and couldn’t do this ‘pro skill level’, so I resorted to making some peas in a pod and some dice cube.
Beautiful! For me, I need the video slowed down though.
Thank you! I have more recently been working on creating full length tutorials. I have a few available on my channel now :)
Amazing!!! You are so incredibly talented.
Thank you so much!!
Beautiful work! You are truly gifted
Thank you so much!
'Wow' What beauty your hands have created. Your truly blessed by (GOD) to have such a creative mind. Thank you for showing me and the entire world your skills. Please do more and upload what you do. I look forward to see your next creation of beauty.
Thank you! I give all credit to God for my talents! I just uploaded some more videos, enjoy and God bless :)
I love watching peeple do this. What's confusing is how the needles work. They look like you're just stabbing the wool. It doesn't look like anythings happeneing but magically *POOF* it's a dog. Can someone please explain?
Basically you stab unspun wool (commonly called roving) with a special barbed needle called a felting needle. I believe the barbs help the wool fibers bind together to form felt. Hope this helps!
Yes, the response by Mars is correct. The needles are special needles that have barbs which catch and pull the fibers on the surface to the inside, and create dense tangles in the natural fibers. It is more difficult with synthetic fibers, but not impossible.
I started needle felting but mine look so bad and unrealistic. Your amazing!!!!
Thank you! 😊 Just keep practicing. I have more recently been working on creating full length tutorials. I have a few available on my channel now :)
How much to make
Beautiful work but the music made me go to sleep.
You said you were asleep why are you commenting?
She probably chose this music because needle felting is peaceful and relaxing
Quit Quit dude she meant it was relaxing
WOW. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. WONDERFUL TUTORIAL THANKYOU, I WOULD LOVE TO BE THAT TALENTED, Lynda from New Zealand

Absolutely Gorgeous . How long have you been felting?
Thank you so much! I have been felting for just over 5 years.
Thank you for the video. I learned a few things from this. I am going to try a sitting dog now. Thanks again
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck, and have fun!
Wow , that’s great . What was the glue for , as the video went a bit too fast .

Hi, it is very kind of you to do this tutorial, I learn new ways. I do a fair amount of felting myself and would love to know were you purchase your supplies, the top of the needle color coded I haven't seen anywhere, could you tell me where to find them? thank you for the inspiration very good work.
I love the needles from Felt Alive. They are the ones I use most often.
great work by the way its so good
Thank you so much 😀
Fabulous, talented, magic
Thank you!
Truly amazing and so cute. Hope you don't mind a question. Only just come across this craft today, has I would like to try this could you suggest where to start etc for a beginner.
Hi Elaine! Great question. I don't have an exact answer, but I can give a few suggestions. I know there are kits available on Amazon.com but I can't really tell you anything about them from personal experience. The overall quality of the tools may not be the greatest, however, they might be a good way to try out needle felting if you are unsure whether you'll enjoy it. BUT if you like crafting, you will probably like needle felting. In which case it may be better to get some good supplies. And to be honest, you really don't need much.
If you were to go to Etsy.com there are many shops that supply needle felting supplies. One shop I purchase from regularly is DreamFelt. www.etsy.com/shop/DreamFelt?ref=l2-shopheader-name§ion_id=8129318
You'll need a felting pad, wool and needles (40T and 36T are what I use most often).
BUT it is important to note that these needles can break!!! So don't buy just ONE needle. The 36T is stronger than 40T, and great for attaching pieces or working around wire armature, but the 40T is what I use most because it gives better detail and grabs the wool so nicely. Also, recently I purchased a clover pen (from Amazon) which holds 3 needles and I like it a lot for getting large areas felting quickly-- but I was needle felting for years without it, so it is not necessary.
From DreamFelt, you would also be looking at the wool "batt" for most projects and wool "roving" only to add long fur. However, I buy my core wool from DreamFelt as "roving" (but it acts like wool batt, just basically in convenient, long strips-- it is what you see me use at the start of this video). The dyed rovings in this shop are more hair like - soft, and not what you would use to sculpt with. Use the wool batt for that. There is no rule that you must use core wool either. Especially for small projects. I personally DO use core wool in most projects, because it is cost effective and also tends to form shapes quickly and easily. Then I cover the project in a dyed wool as needed. However, this retriever puppy was actually most core wool since the natural color of the wool was just what I needed in this case. It does have some accents of a more golden wool on top in a few places, but mostly just natural, un-dyed core wool.
Also, I know Sarafina Fiber Art has many online tutorials and I believe she sells kits as well. I don't know if they include needles and a felting pad, or just the wool for each project. There are many different textures of wool roving in that shop too. Some you can add details and fur, some you can sculpt with. They are all very nice.
I also like Felt Alive. She has many tutorials that show how to work with the wool and form shapes. My favorite needles are actually from Felt Alive, but they are not always available.
And you can just search for wool on Etsy. There are many great suppliers there! Some wool is very fine and soft (meant more for spinning and clothing), such as merino wool-- but you can use it for fur if you need to. It just compresses easily, so it can look flat, and gives a different look than some more coarse wools. So it takes some trial and error.
Hope that helps! Good luck and have fun!
This is so realistic, it’s crazy!!! 😊
Thank you! 😊
Very nice... Your art is mind blowing 😃.
Thank you so much 😀
Wow ...magic right there in front of your eyes while having lunch
Thank you so much!
Soo cute. Amazing work

Thank you!
I wish you had voice recorded the steps. But amazing work all the same.

This is fantastic! I know it can't be easy. Do you use photos as reference? The way you shape the nose, it's beautiful! Do you recommend any specific needles for this kind of work? Is it important to use felting needles or can sewing needles work?
Definitely felting needles are required. They have tiny barbs that grab the wool and pull fibers inside- it sort of tangles up the wool.
I tried this is art class for a project. Didn’t turn out that cute like this one :P
EXTREMELY UNDERRATED
Thanks :)
This is all new to me, I just have to try it! Thank you!
Wonderful! Have fun needle felting!
Omg i Love it!
Thank you so much!! ❤
You deserve a like and subscription!!
Who else thinks it's really beautiful?
👇
this looks therapeutic yet also very time consuming. I'm looking for something to do and start my own business, maybe I should give this a try?
Yes you should definitely try this! You don’t need to worry about getting an expensive fancy kit either, we have a lot of cotton balls in my house I have no clue why but we do, so I took a couple of those unwrapped them and started on this and it turned out pretty nice, I think you should try this.
such a cute puppy. I am going to learn how to do this. Maybe in the next ten years :)
Ok you are making this look so easy but I know it has taken practice to get it down to where you have something so beautiful as you most certainly did. How long did it take for you to complete this..( I can multiply that number by 10 for me... amateur hour.) lol
It took about 18 hours. I don't think it would take you 10 times as long. Probably not even twice as long. In fact, maybe it would take you less. When I first started, I spent only about 8-10 hours on projects this size. As I improved in the craft, I became more particular and took more time on each piece. If you go to my Facebook page, you can actually scroll all the way down the page to the very first felted animals I ever made. Everything I have ever made is on that page. I think you will be encouraged! In a relatively short amount of time I learned a lot and progressed greatly in skill-- so I'm confident you can too! :)
hola me ha encantado, felicitaciones, eso si que es arte, impresionante¡¡
¡Gracias!
Pure art!
Thank you!
He is sooooooooooo cute!
Thank you!
You are amazing ❣🐱🐶
Thank you!
Could you do a giveaway where like 3 or 1 winner/s get a costume made felted pet? Probably one winner due to how long it takes to make one of these.

Is yur core batting wool? I like how it's not like a regular bag of core that's just a pile of tangled wool carded batt, I think... No?
It's core wool roving :) I get it on Etsy.
It’s fantastic!
