- How to change the transmission fluid in an AW4 transmission commonly found in Cherokees(XJ), Comanches (MJ), and the 1993 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) with the 4.0. I used about 4.5 quarts of Dex/Merc III trans fluid to do the fluid change

For what it's worth, I did this just yesterday to a '96 Jeep Cherokee with a straight six. Could not get the dipstick tube to separate so I unbolted the dipstick up at the top and bent the mounting flange so it would allow the dipstick tube to drop down. My exhaust crossed over close beneath the pan so I had to unhook the exhaust header to lower the crossover pipe in order to lower the pan. The pan had the original factory Jeep orange flexible gasket material on the contact surfaces, so no actual gasket. I've had worse experiences changing transmission filters, but this ranked right up there if you can't separate the dipstick tube. Even with the exhaust dropped I still had to bend the pan on an angle down, which slightly bent the dipstick tube. Then with a combination of pushing the exhaust back and then forward again, the angle was just right to finally pry the crossover pipe down while simultaneously pulling the pan down as far as possible before the dipstick tube hung up again on the transmission lines. I did not want to risk disconnecting the lines to lower the pan further for fear of leaks as we live some distance from parts houses. The pan was now low enough to change out the filter. The pan could also be swiveled to one side and it was also low enough such that most of the gasket residue could be scraped off, magnets could be removed, cleaned, and replaced, and there was just enough visibility to completely wipe clean the inside surfaces of the pan with several clean rags while it remained suspended by the dipstick tube. Once everything was back together the dipstick mounting flange was easily bent back into shape and the mounting bolt reinstalled. Throughout this process the dipstick tube was never bent enough to restrict travel of the dipstick itself, so all is good today and there are no leaks!

I always swap 2-3 qts of trans fluid (suck out via dipstick tube) when I do the oil change (Every 5K miles Pennzoil Platinum synthetic) in my 2016 Wrangler to keep it nice and fresh and will drop the pan at 60-80K to change the filter. You’ll be amazed at how keeping your fluids fresh can help you avoid costly problems in the future. I do my differentials and transfer case fluid changes every 20K miles. I know very early and often for fluid changes, but keeps it running good. Use all OEM fluids and filters for Diffs, Trans and Xfer case, Mopar fluids from Quadratec cost a lot less than from Amazon. $14 quart for Mopar ATF 4 vs $22 on Amazon, and free shipping too, even the LSD friction modifier a lot cheaper too.

The only part missing is that it’s nearly impossible for a lot of high mileage XJ’s to get the tranny pan disconnected from the dipstick. I legit tried for almost two hours of prying and tugging. I even took a torch to it but nothing worked. I tried to disconnect the dipstick and take the whole thing out but I could get that either.
Finally I just cut the pipe and replaced it with rubber tubing and clamps. 👍🏽
I've heard that from a few people. Must have gotten lucky that mine came apart fairly easily
@@AdmiralOffRoad yeah dude lol. I didn’t wanna cut it but saw many people online just saying they cut it and replaced it with tubes and clamps. It’ll also just make it a lot easier in the future now too. Good video though boss
Don't forget to cycle through the gears in the driveway before the final fluid check at operating tempurature.
I usually measure what I took out, “and then some”, about 1/2 quart for what stuck around, or fell outside my catch,
Haha you totally glazed over the hardest part of this little project for me, which was disconnecting that pos 2 piece dis-stick tube
I've heard that from a few people, guess i got lucky that mine came off so easy!
I cut the dip stick tube. I used "close" pipe cutter that plumbers use for copper tube. Then a piece of fuel line and two ring clamps to put it back together.

Admiral nice video but any advice on removing the dip stick mechanism. I might just bolt back on together see if leaks. I can remove it for the life. I don’t wanna try or do the cut metal put more fuel line on. Thought about possible destroying dip stick tube. Buying a replacement. Any idea XJers

Because I just did mine and it's got 276,000 and I did mine and the fluid was about a black reddish. But I DO NOT flush my transmissions. Haven't tested yet. Bought some lucus trans slip just incase.

Yes, and a great way to get everything cleaned up well before putting the transfer case pan back on.

Hey admiral isn't the dip stick on long piece that connects to the pan or did you have to cut the dip stick tube?
+rohitter7878 I removed the dipstick before removing the pan. the dip stick tube is two pieces that come apart when you remove the transmission pan. I did not have to cut it

Did mine using your video, however when I’ve put te gasket on I used some grease to hold it down. When tightening to 5 1/2, the gasket started to “spill” around the edges. I have a small leak now and was wondering if the vaseline caused me to overtighten it?
NEVER use Vaseline, it can deteriorate seals.

TO EVERYONE, PLEASE DO NOT SPILL OIL OR BREAK FLUID IN THE GROUND. This causes soil and ground pollution that is veeg expensive to clean.

I have my 96' Cherokee XJ at a shop getting the transfer case and transmission serviced. I just called them and the service writer informed me that the tech had a hard time getting the feed tube out? Why would the feed tube need to even be removed? Looks like the pan just falls out along with the feed tube. Mmmmm, and they are supposed to be one of the best repair shops here
Its a 2 piece design, the tube disconnects when the trans pan drops. If he struggled with it, I'd recommend taking it elsewhere.
One question..... HOW DO U TAKE OUT DIP STICK LOL u went over it so loosely and I can't get it out
there is an O ring inside the dipstick tube that holds the two halves together. Sometimes it deteriorates and makes separating the two halves difficult. You just need to pull hard and maybe twist it back and forth a bit but there really isn't much to it.

yes, they pull apart, but i have heard of people having some trouble separating them as the two halves can stick

Dex/merc is what it came with, so I don't see that causing problems

I can´t disconect the dipstick, my pan is stuck because of it. I tried with lubricant spray pulling strongly but no success, any ideas?
there is an O-ring in there that can deteriorate and cause the two pieces to not want to come apart. you may need to pry the two apart by using a wedge between the pan and transmission near the dipstick tube and supporting the other side of the pan.
Hi, This happened to my 96 XJ. I reconnected the pan, disconnected the top part of the dip stick tube, sprayed the area where the two tubes mate with WD40 and yanked! Came loose after a bit. Good luck.
Why don’t they have a drain plug on new Jeep models ? Better design then than now, no cross members and exhaust blocking, as is on ‘08-‘18 Wrangler JK.
What do y'all recommend cleaning the pan with? Looks like he used brake parts cleaner? Would engine degreaser be appropriate?
Clay Wilson you can use degreaser but that leaves some residue that can harm the trannny. I use the break cleaner to clean the residue left behind.
I just wash mine in a slop sink with soap and water, make sure completely dry before reinstalling.
My jeep has the same transmission and has 169k miles and i dont know if this has ever been done would it be safe to do this on my jeep?
+aintloudjeep That's a good question, and one that the jeep community seems to be split on. I have about 160K on my transmission and the fluid had never been changed when i changed it. I have heard stories of people changing their very old transmission fluid and it causing the Transmission to slip. Mine, however has felt perfectly fine since the change. I am very sorry that I cannot be more helpful with the situation. I can only tell you what I've heard and what I've personally experienced. I will say that the general consensus is that whether or not you change the transmission fluid, DO NOT get a flush.

Thats were im at mine has 158000 on it and starting to slip after I drive it for a long time so I'm afraid to change it and then it died all at once
How do you disconnect the dipstick line???
you just pull it apart it seems like some people have theres stuck together really hard but they're not held together with bolt or anything
I had to cut it off on the pan side and unbolt it on the top side and pull it out. Installed a new pan and gasket (came with dipstick tube attached to the pan). I then had to remove the dipstick tube from the old cut-off pan so I could mount it to the new pan...careful not to destroy stuff! Absolute nightmare.
It looks like that if you don't drill/tap/plug the converter, then you NEED to use Dex/Merc III.The only way to swap to ATF+4 would be to do a FULL system drain/flush to include the converter, cooler, & lines. (Pump it out and backfill the system.)

There's nothing really else to say. You just pull on it. The gasket makes it hard to pull but thats it
@@AdmiralOffRoad I'd say more like vigorously wiggling and slightly pulling at the same time. Also, spraying PB blaster or some kind of lube where it joins. I had a hard time.
Thats true, I didn't have too much of a problem with mine so I didn't have to address that, but I've gotten a few comments of people who had to fight the dip stick more
You used wrong fluid this transmission requires Atf+4
Nope. Chrysler put out TSB 21-014-07 in October 2007 that approved ATF4+ in the AW4 trasnmission. They came from the factory, however with Dex/Merc III. Either is acceptable but ATF4+ is a synthetic which some people have reported issues with when converting from a conventional trans fluid in a high mileage vehicle so I stuck with the Dex/Merc III.
