perhaps seeing Ian McCollum from Forgotten Weapons firing the South African Denel anti-materiel (the rifle that became the basis for Halo's sniper rifle) can fix you up
Honestly Reach's version was my favorite purely for its ability to tear vehicles apart. Made me actually feel like I'm shooting an anti-materiel sniper rifle.
I remember back in the day when Reach first launched, there was a lot of trying to snipe the driver, or the gunner... I pulled the tables and would aim for the hood of warthogs, or the front center of ghosts. It causes a different kind of panic, because they suddenly realize the vehicle is a MUCH bigger target than any one individual is, and usually resulted in them beelining directly away for the nearest cover in a panic. The backs of Scorpions were *very* soft, too. It became a game of if they could get away before I pumped enough rounds into the vehicle to kill everyone on board, 'cuz I wasn't trying to make my lives last a long time. Except Falcon gunners. EVERYONE sniped Falcon gunners.
@@ArnieMcStranglehold I take a slightly different approach when it comes to fighting the Scorpion. Given the long range I always pop off three to four rounds over the cockpit to strip off the cover before landing a single headshot. It's great for when you want to remove the tank as a problem but can still let teammates take a now vacant enemy tank for themselves
Love the ability, hate how it looks. Rather, I think it's fine, but painfully generic looking, especially when compared to the classic one, when it still based on the Denel sniper irl.

5:46 As it turns out, Halo 2 never had/used hit-scan weapons at all, the reason why they are so fast is because Bungie increased the projectile speed of all the human weapons to 400(BR,SMG,Magnum) up to 1200(Sniper,Beam) units per second instead of the 100-250(?) Units that H1 had; and in addition to the wonky netcode, Halo 3's weapons are dramatically slowed down especially the BR which is at 180 or so Units. Then Reach came along and jack it all up to 1200 for every human weapon and its been like that ever since. Great Video as all ways!
Given the fact Halo 3 is segmented hitscan to simulate it being projectile, I'm assuming 2 is as well, meaning it is hitscan for all intents and purposes
@@roar104 Segmented hitscan? where did you find that out? Every Halo Engine up to H5 (we dont have mod tools for H5 so we have no clue) has been Projectile based, even the spartan laser which should be hitscan (imo) is just several really fast projectiles to give the illusion of hit-scan. (I hope I'm not coming off as a jack-ass)
@Alex Luca Well I dont have Halo reach installed on my PC so I didnt double check the values with Assemble (not to mention I wrote out that on my phone at work on break)
Addendum: The actual values for each bullet weapon in Reach are DMR: 3000 AR: 3000 Magnum: 3000 Sniper: 6000 Needle Rifle: 1500 Focus Rifle: 4000 I as Alex Luca pointed out, my initial values for reach are off. So using the Program "Assembly" by Xbox Chaos I checked each weapon's "proj" tag and searched for its "Initial" and "Final" velocity fields. If anyone has MCC on PC you can double check for yourself. Though Assembly does not support H1 and H2:A needs to be decompressed then re-compressed after messing around with the tags.
Literally every time I hear someone talk about Halo 3's netcode like it was somehow whose than Halo 2's I feel like I'm losing my mind. halo.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?cid=14347 Halo 2's networking code was *garbage* for the "host" of a match. It created a distinct and noticeable issue with the behavior of weapons for a client vs a host, as the system always favored what the client saw when they pulled the trigger. This single handedly created Swipe Sniping and a hundred other problems, including inconsistent round grouping on the BR and wonky auto aim on various weapons. The perception of Halo 3's netcode as being worse is because it was vastly more *fair.* Under bad network conditions, it was crap for everyone, but under good network conditions, it was good at the same level for everyone. And fwiw, as pointed out in the Bungie article above, H2's battle rifle and Sniper Rifle were both hit scan weapons as of Halo 2.1.1. Whatever may have happened on the Vista port or the MCC port, it's irrefutably true from a firsthand source that Halo 2 had hit scan weapons. I know it's hard for a lot of folks to grok, but H2 was a garbage fire of a game. The entire campaign structure fell apart and had to be rebuilt two years into development. The multi-player didn't work basically until three months before going gold. The fact that it was playable at all - and most folks don't remember how bad it was prior to the 1.1 update - was absolutelt a triumph, but its failure to deliver on iterating on the brilliance of Halo CE are writ large across its entire construction. Halo 3 is a great effort to merge the two games - one they intended to make (Halo) and one they found a way to make despite years of struggle (Halo 2). It merges what makes both games beloved by their fanbases but still manages to do some new stuff. It's the model that every Halo game should use and aspire to.
The Defiance of Yasmin sniper from the first Destiny has a VERY similar sound to the Halo sniper. Hmm, I wonder why... But my goodness, the Halo sniper is the most badass gun I've ever heard in a game.
I love the huge viewmodel for the H4 sniper. It makes it feel like an ultra high caliber anti-material rifle that will put a hole in you, the bunker you're hiding in, and the bunker behind your bunker.

Halo 3 is my favorite sniper for quite a few reasons. the green wire-frame on the scope view is one of the best design choices I've ever seen. it looks so utilitarian and as if it were just put together yesterday. there are even pieces of it that look like they have weld based scorch marks on them. the sound is powerful and intimidating you can hear the cartridge hit the floor if you listen close it's generally hard to use but predictable, like it should be it looks designed to be treated rough and beat up like it did when Romeo almost died and finally, I love how the shots bounce and even pass through multiple targets. lucky enough to have that happen quite a few times
I’ve never really felt like the Sniper Rifle has changed all that much throughout the series, it’s very consistent. Hopefully the Infinite Sniper brings back the very powerful sound the H2A sniper has.
Evolution of the Wraith. It's one of the vehicles that got better and better gameplay wise with each game while being massively underrated compared to the Warthog.
Oh man, my favorite has to be the Halo 3 incarnation of the sniper rifle. When you spawn with it during the mission The Ark and hear your ODST allies mention a good angle to take a shot, and overall just styling on the brutes, led to some seriously fond memories. The rifle in multiplayer also shined, too, for all the reasons you mentioned. In MCC's PC release I feel like an absolute GOD when I manage to get a shot off on someone. Also, I'd love to see an evolution of the plasma pistol, since in Halo CE you could fire it even faster than the plasma rifle!
Honestly the CE Sniper Rifle is my Fav and the coolest part about it was the night vision and that sound affect that played when you activated it was soo tactical and cool sounding ngl.
I’d love to see you talk about some of the one-off weapons like the needle rifle, the focus rifle, the sticky detonator, etc. I don’t know if that would really be an ‘evolutions’ video but it just kinda came to mind.
H2A's sniper is by in far my favorite iteration. Those "crunchy" firing sounds it makes are just so pleasing to the ears! Though I gotta say that Halo Reach's sniper is a close second due to its ability to take out vehicles, especially banshees given how over powered they are in Reach.
I've been watching this series through today, and it's making me really miss having an xbox and playing Halo CE, 2, and 3... Why is nostalgia simultaneously joyous and depressing...
I’m a massive halo fan , read all the books , have the halo encyclopedia , played all the games , beaten them on legendary and am just now learning that the flood are immune to the sniper rifle. My mind is blown upon learning this information
I just finished ODST earlier today for the first time and I've got to say,The Beam Rifle was my best friend too It's the only weapon that allowed me to pick off Brute packs from a good distance, not to mention it works as a shotgun alternate at close quarters too
What I think is a common quirk for sniper rifles is while they have the most firepower and range above all other weapons but when it come to enemy’s that have an zombie appeal they tend to be beaten out by more efficient close quarters weapons that genuinely get the job done more better
My whole theory/backstory for the wire on the sniper in 4 was because in some lore thats how spartans used the scope the wire would plug into the helmet and a video screen would pop up in the visor showing them the scope and what they are aiming at. A example video that shows this is in Halo legends "the Babysitter"
The reticle for the halo 3 sniper seems to shift up a bit when you were scoping in. When descoped it's a little lower than where it should be, but as soon as you scope in it shifts up to its normal position
17:40 here is the probable explanation : in 3D animation software (and by extension the game engine into which keyframe animation is imported), 3D "Euler" rotation works with three separate values : X, Y and Z -one for each axis. Each axis is evaluated one at a time, this is called "rotation order" -this is a bit hard to explain without pictures, but the nature of Euler rotations makes it so that IF a prominent axis (such as the axis along which the view bobs left and right in Halo) is evaluated *before* another (such as the "view height" axis), increasing the value in the "view height axis" will exacerbate the existing movement in the "bobbing axis", proportionally to the altitude the player's aiming at. This is because animation systems in games are parametric, *ie* reacting to in-game parameters on top of pre-baked keyframe animation. Depending on whether the player view is set to add to an existing (animated) rotation channel or multiply final transformation matrix by the view axis, this is going to look different, and have unwanted side-effects such as this exaggerated view-bobbing. I hope this was somewhat understandable, english is not my language. Here is a good resource to learn more : th-cam.com/video/Hi1hrWhAcf0/w-d-xo.html
Man, Reach might be my favorite game, but Halo 3 had the best human sniper rifle. I loved the sound the bullets would make as they flew over your shoulder, the way bodies took flight from HVAPFSDS-powered death... Most importantly, I loved the repeated building of obstacle courses to perfectly fire a ricochet into a fusion coil to unlock some kind of gate, or a similar ricochet arena to headshot yourself or someone else.
Not going to lie, when you were talking about the Halo 4 sniper and afterwards, for ages I thought that was Mass Effect music in the background and I was really confused why there was that choice in music. Had no idea until near the end of the video that it was actually Halo music
I am Fairly new to Halo and I personally am completely fine with the art style change. It may not look as good as the originals but I just think it all looks cool! And I honestly love Halo 5, it’s one of my favorite Halo games, and I love the aim down sights feature

The Halo sniper rifle is my favorite gun in a first person shooter (as one could see from my TH-cam channel art). I use this same picture for my Xbox LIve avatar. From Halo: CE up to Halo: Reach, it was incredible. Good looking, good sounding, and satisfying to use. Then Halo 4 happened...
I think the Halo Infinite sniper will look like a Remington 700 with a bunch of rails and tactical handguards. Because non-scifi is the route they’re taking with guns, it seems.
i reccomend doing a video on the forerunner weapons of halo. i feel it would be a good way to cross off the promithean weapons and the sentenal beam in one video seeing as they dont really have very many games behind them
Always enjoyed your evolution videos. It's fun seeing how each weapon evolves throughout the Halo games and exploring the pros and cons of each iteration. Looking forward to when you do a video on the Covenant Carbine
A better explanation for why its inefective against flood in 1 is because when sniper rounds hit something they spread apart like a cone shape leaving a big exit wound. Because the flood arent as dense as other enemies the bullets just pass through and dont spread apart when it hits them.
For the next evolution video, perhaps you could cover the SMG! It's quite the oddity for standard UNSC weapons since its introduction, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on its changes throughout the franchise.
you should watch bungies GDC talk on the Halo 3 sniper. they literally talk about making it look good for youtube. By keeping the bullet trail longer and adding the BACKFLIP animations when you headshot someone. AAND making the game feel more floaty. th-cam.com/video/8YJ53skc-k4/w-d-xo.html this is exactly the opposite of what 343 does. they dont care about the small intricacies of these. evolution of the warthog would make a great video, seeing as its been a sort of "figure head" for vehicles on halo since launch
Granted I'm still not that into Halo but something about that soothing voice keeps me coming back when we gonna a do another collab
Halo 3 is my favorite sniper for quite a few reasons.
the green wire-frame on the scope view is one of the best design choices I've ever seen.
it looks so utilitarian and as if it were just put together yesterday. there are even pieces of it that look like they have weld based scorch marks on them.
the sound is powerful and intimidating
you can hear the cartridge hit the floor if you listen close
it's generally hard to use but predictable, like it should be
it looks designed to be treated rough and beat up like it did when Romeo almost died
and finally, I love how the shots bounce and even pass through multiple targets. lucky enough to have that happen quite a few times
That halo 3 sniper sound effect is just so satisfying
You forgot the Sniper's idle animation: The cute little pat on its scope that creates a sense of: "Who's a good boy?"
The h4 sniper sound is so good. That and h3 are probably my favorite
I’d love to see you talk about some of the one-off weapons like the needle rifle, the focus rifle, the sticky detonator, etc. I don’t know if that would really be an ‘evolutions’ video but it just kinda came to mind.
When I think of Halo’s identity, I always think of the Assault Rifle and Sniper rifle as being the most iconic elements
The 1911 in Call of Duty: World at War also used the reload sound from the sniper, kinda surprised you didn't mention that instead
I remember the machina episode with the guy on The Pit, who bounced his shot more than ten times in the little crevasse in the yellow hallway.
H2A's sniper is by in far my favorite iteration. Those "crunchy" firing sounds it makes are just so pleasing to the ears! Though I gotta say that Halo Reach's sniper is a close second due to its ability to take out vehicles, especially banshees given how over powered they are in Reach.
Yakool The banshee was pretty bad in reach
Nah.
Reach's sniper rifle sounds more deadly vs Halo 2A.
Lets not forget the sniper rifle’s most common feature across all games: My inability to hit the broad side of a barn from the inside.
I've been watching this series through today, and it's making me really miss having an xbox and playing Halo CE, 2, and 3... Why is nostalgia simultaneously joyous and depressing...
That recipricating handle on the weak side always make me flinch.
16:09 No, it doesn’t. They specifically changed it after the beta so the zoom snaps a lot faster, equal speed to past games.
I’m loving these evolution videos on halo weapons, I’ve subbed in excitement for when you cover some other guns like the SMG and plasma pistol 😁😁
ODST is underrated. It’s slightly understandable as it’s short as balls but it’s still my favorite game ever.
Mine too! Glad too see someone else whose favourite is ODST! : )
I've been waiting so long for a DMR evolution. PLEASE!!!!!!!
I’m a massive halo fan , read all the books , have the halo encyclopedia , played all the games , beaten them on legendary and am just now learning that the flood are immune to the sniper rifle. My mind is blown upon learning this information
The Truth And Reconciliation always comes to mind discussing this thing

PC Gamers: **Gasping for air**
Underrated comment
I don't get it...
@@godnyx117 pc gamers are laughing their asses off because us console players "require" aim assist to aim. Pc fps games don't have aim assist
Halo ces sniper is really easy to use on pc
Keyboard and mouse is easier to use
Weirdly I almost always had a beam rifle on hand in ODST.
I just finished ODST earlier today for the first time and I've got to say,The Beam Rifle was my best friend too
It's the only weapon that allowed me to pick off Brute packs from a good distance, not to mention it works as a shotgun alternate at close quarters too
Yeah it's amazing. Pair it with a rapid fire weapon for grunts or drones and the game is piss easy and fun even on legendary.
@@friendlyreaper9012 I'd often pair it with a Carbine but I'd always run for a plasma rifle or smg if drones showed up.
Was just looking for this video earlier today, and was bummed it wasn't a thing yet. Glad to see in my suggested videos this evening
Strafe aiming is the secret to using the sniper from the hip in CE. Hold near head level, sidestep into alignment, and bang. One ventilated dome.
Only halfway through the video but I really hope he takes a look at the "Instagram camera" early Halo 4 model
YESSSSSSS HE DID
The sheer meatiness of H2A’s sniper firing sound is one of the best weapon sounds in the entire franchise.
A example video that shows this is in Halo legends "the Babysitter"
the doom eternal ballista has made me good at hip firing the sniper
The reticle for the halo 3 sniper seems to shift up a bit when you were scoping in. When descoped it's a little lower than where it should be, but as soon as you scope in it shifts up to its normal position
Halo Reach.
My favorite game and some of my favorite looks and feels of weapons.
Halo weapons are like old friends, Their still around and change in ways you may not like but their still there all the same when you need them.

I feel like 2 & 3 had a softer firing sound, and I liked them for that
Man, Reach might be my favorite game, but Halo 3 had the best human sniper rifle.
THERE ARE OTHER THINGS I WANT TO WATCH BUT I JUST CAN'T STOP WATCHING THESE!!!!!
Loved that new Infinite music at the end of the video
Not going to lie, when you were talking about the Halo 4 sniper and afterwards, for ages I thought that was Mass Effect music in the background and I was really confused why there was that choice in music. Had no idea until near the end of the video that it was actually Halo music
I am Fairly new to Halo and I personally am completely fine with the art style change. It may not look as good as the originals but I just think it all looks cool! And I honestly love Halo 5, it’s one of my favorite Halo games, and I love the aim down sights feature
this video came up just before my birthday
i would love to see the plasma pistol evolution
big fan of you, late night gaming
btw, i actually saw you while playing halo 2 anniversary
but i thought it was too good to be true
The Halo sniper rifle is my favorite gun in a first person shooter (as one could see from my TH-cam channel art). I use this same picture for my Xbox LIve avatar.
From Halo: CE up to Halo: Reach, it was incredible. Good looking, good sounding, and satisfying to use. Then Halo 4 happened...
I'd love to see you cover some of the recurring vehicles in Halo and how they've changed
Amazing Video!
I quite like the Reach Sniper, but I prefer the H2A sound.
The other ones are good too!
I think the Halo Infinite sniper will look like a Remington 700 with a bunch of rails and tactical handguards. Because non-scifi is the route they’re taking with guns, it seems.
Lethality weapons in Halo: *Exist*
LNG: Your free trial of existence has expired
i reccomend doing a video on the forerunner weapons of halo. i feel it would be a good way to cross off the promithean weapons and the sentenal beam in one video seeing as they dont really have very many games behind them
Fun Fact: Halo 5's Sniper Rifle uses a highly modified version of Halo 4's DMR firing sound. That's why it sounds a bit off.
The Covenant failing to hear the THUNDEROUS Halo CEA sniper is hilarious, but I wouldn't change a thing about it.
Would've been cool for you to mention the cut sniper rifles in the 1999 version of halo, those weapon designs are very interesting to me
i remember making a halo reach forge map that was completely dark and you had to use the sniper screen to see! good times....
For the next evolution video, perhaps you could cover the SMG! It's quite the oddity for standard UNSC weapons since its introduction, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on its changes throughout the franchise.
Do one of these for every iconic weapon, and I will watch each 10x no questions asked
you should watch bungies GDC talk on the Halo 3 sniper. they literally talk about making it look good for youtube. By keeping the bullet trail longer and adding the BACKFLIP animations when you headshot someone. AAND making the game feel more floaty. th-cam.com/video/8YJ53skc-k4/w-d-xo.html
this is exactly the opposite of what 343 does. they dont care about the small intricacies of these. Maybe i'm wrong and they just dont talk about it. but nothing they do seems to show the same amount of care and work.
Neckzilla or they just didn’t think they wanted someone go flying and besides the small intracicies is why should they fix that when they should be fixing armor customization
@@luigimrlgaming9484 yeah you just sums up the halo community. im talking about good gameplay feedback and youre focused on bad armor customization.

@derp derpin you do know that at the time I wrote this comment halo mcc was very different now that my issues are solved I think we’re all happy so do not respond to a criticism that has been tended to you piece of ****
Oh yeah and armor customization is one of the things I quite like even though you don’t get to see it too much it’s still cool and for me gameplay wasn’t a problem
