The Beatles, and every other "British Invasion" group, were never better than when performing covers of Chuck Berry songs and Little Richard ones too. I still get goosebumps every time I hear them. There was an overwhelming garage band energy that could not be duplicated no matter what symphony orchestra accompanied their future songs.

Ringo was far from exceptional, such statements by people who obviously were not around in the early sixties are quite frankly ridiculous, I saw the band from the very beginning when they had Pete, and on a very few occasions Johnny Hutch, Ringo was with Rory Storm and was never a great drummer but he fitted in with the others in the band more than Pete,, their were much better drummers in Liverpool at that time such as Johnny hutch, Gibson Kemp and Trevor M, Ringo was a character and a good fit for the Beatles nothing more.
It's not a cover of a Chuck Berry song. John and Paul wrote it around 1957, this version was written more in the style of Chuck Berry, especially the guitar part. Chuck Berry was one of their idols and they DID cover Chuck Berry in their albums.

Especially Paul McCartney was diving into experimenting, using other instruments etc. He was more avant garde than John Lennon in those Beatle days. George Harrison was also more looking for new ways using Indian instruments, like the sitar. Lennon stays for me a rock and roll singer. And he didn't improve himself in songwriting when the Beatles split. What did he wrote? Imagine that's it. George and Paul did go there own way and produced very nice songs.
I agree in part, although you have to give John Lennon credit for songs like I Am The Walrus, etc.. This was totally new back in the day, and still sounds fresh and original today. When it came to writing great pop songs, Paul was the king no doubt, beautiful crafted melodies, what a pair they made. Let's not forget George Harrison, he was not as prolific as the other two, but made great contributions . "Something " bears this out. great tune. Also let's give a lot of credit to George Martin. This suit and tie a and r man who saw the possibility of something really great, and added lovely arrangements and great production to the whole thing. This was the first time a producer/arranger really got involved in a pop project. To sum up, a great bringing together of wonderful talent, hasn't been repeated again, and is very unlikely to. Amen to the Beatles and George Martin, a total quirk of nature that changed the musical world forever..
The Rolling Stones got their success partly thanks to the Beatles; one of their first hits was "I Wanna Be Your Man", written by Lennon-McCartney, and George himself recommended them to Decca to let the recording happen in the first place. That speaks a lot regardless of what you think about both bands.

The 'One After 909' is the oldest Beatle song ever. The song was written as early as 1957, and is one of the first Lennon--McCartney compositions. In his 1980 playboy interview, Lennon explained. 'That was something I wrote when I was about seventeen'. McCartney said, 't's not a great song, but it's a great favourite of mine because it has great memories for me of John. We were trying to write a bluesy freight-train song. There were a lots of those songs at the time, like Midnight Special by Lead belly. We wrote the 'One After 909. The girl in the song didn't get the 909, she got the one after it. Its official release date, as part of the "Let It Be" album, was May 1970. The real first recording took place during a rehearsal in the Cavern in 1962, only sound was recorded. It's so different from record versions. It's rough, just back from Germany, just before there first recordings took place. They held it back for so long because 'One After 909' is also a more American rock-and-roll sounding song. Bonnie, the Beatles were filmed in the Cavern in 1962 by Granada TV, one of the largest TV companies in the UK at the time. They had the franchise which covered the North West of England for the ITV network and while they made major programmes to be networked across the country they were also contractually obliged to produce local programming, of which this was an example. The Beatles Cavern footage was shot simply for a brief regional report on the then-local Merseybeat phenomenon and if it had been, say, Gerry and the Pacemakers playing on that day it would probably be them on film. (In fact Gerry and co were filmed later at the Cavern). No doubt most people involved thought that The Beatles and their contemporaries would be forgotten in a few months time.

I've read all the threads about who was better, Pete Best or Ringo Starr, and all I have to say about that is I found a TH-cam video where Carl Perkins invited Ringo Starr to be a guest drummer and lead singer for "Honey Don't", which we all know, was covered by the Beatles . Drummers are strange creatures, and those who can also sing are rare indeed. Ringo Starr is one of the rare ones who can not only play but sing. Whether he was a better drummer is immaterial. Whether he was a great singer is also immaterial. The fact that he could do both was instrumental in the success of the Beatles.
That beat dadada bum bum dadada bum bum, was the sound that made them famous. It was similar to other sounds of the times, but the blend was so distinctly them.
They tried to record a version for their second British album ("Beatles For Sale") but weren't happy with any of the takes (plus George Martin didn't like the song at all) so it was dropped. A couple of the takes were combined for the first "Anthology" CD.

I swear that I've followed the Beatles since about 1967 and at one point, had almost every Album that premiered songs as fresh releases. The Let it Be Album I had contained "One after 909" and that's the first time I ever heard or knew of it. So I'm really surprised that they wrote that song in 1957 and that was a year after I born! Even though I knew a lot about the Beatles, I was no 'walking encyclopedia' about the band. I just knew more about them than any other band I knew and listened to. David Gilmore, (Pink Floyd), said that he got his early ''inspirational start' from the Beatles, as many other Rock & Roll bands of the period would later admit. In fact, I think it's very difficult to say "My favorite song of all time is...". For me, it's impossible to say what my favorite all time song is. That essentially equates to: I don't have a favorite song. However, my favorite band was and still is the Beatles with a close second being Pink Floyd. I hear many similarities in the lyrics & music of the songs from both bands and even more so between the songs written by Lennon and Gilmore. Not so much the specific words or notes, but the similarity in they way that they were consistently fitting the lyrics and music together so that each of the two components, (the lyrics & music) supported one another. There are many good songs from many bands, but the really great songs are always the ones that came together in that way. It's a "genius thing" and I'm afraid that it all seemed to come to an end sometime between 2004 and 2007. History has a way of making full circles and then repeats itself. The music of this, and the last generation has truly lost the entire point and talent of the previous years. This is very likely due to the commercialism mindset of the large recording producers, who found it more profitable for them if they keep the music they'll produce in line with the trends and events of today. That way, they can sell the productions to TV & Radio commercial advertisements. They avoid bands because then they need to accept a smaller profit for themselves. In addition, the music can't be easily bargained out of the writers and band members. A large number of bands from the 70's through the 90''s have often mentioned how the production companies were constantly reconfiguring the contracts. Many interviews with writers disclose the precarious relationship with the recording labels. Large recording producers are not artistically talented, but they're certainly greed-motivated. I think the recording producers have finally got what they were shooting for and as usual, when an outside, avaricious-minded, influence imposes its guidelines, you can bet the results is a great reduction in quality and a large jump in quantity. That's the music of today, thanks to those people who worship the dollar bill. FWIW
hahaha well, i think you feel that way because this is so fresh. But in their entire catalogue there are much better. So much excellence is just hard to rank the best and the better. Did they ever phone anything in? never.
Love the old recordings. You did a great job of syncing up the Cavern performance (Some Other Guy), with this recording of One After 909. I do think it was Pete on drums in this recording (heavy on the bass drum). He was a great drummer for the Beatles when they played live. That raw pounding rock got the audiences crazy, and he had a ton of fans. I've always been a fan of his too. Still, I do believe that Ringo was ultimately a better fit for the band personality wise, and he was more creative with the entire kit, which added a lot, especially once they secluded themselves into the recording studios. It's a shame the way they handled his sacking, though,...after all they had been through together. They were young, I guess, and just didn't know how to handle it properly/honorably. In the end though, it all worked out...even for Pete.

True. BUT,..George Martin wasn't impressed with Ringo either at first, and used a session drummer anyway after hearing him. He was very picky, particularly when it came to drums, and he often used session drummers. I really do believe that If the other Beatles had liked Pete more, they would have stuck with him, and it would have worked out similarly. Different...but the fame would have been similar. In my opinion, George Martin's genius was the crucial addition to the Beatles' direction. Ringo, in my opinion, was NOT a game changer. But I will repeat my agreement with you,..that Ringo was definitely a better match for the band (personality AND drumming skills).

And that was the only time an outside drummer ever played on a Beatle song. Other than that, I agree that George Martin was crucial. He was definitely the 5th Beatle if there ever was one.

From the time I first heard the original version of this song on the 1995 issue of the Anthology collection, I've always liked it better than the 1970 Let It Be version. It's a rocker. You can dance to it. Their 1970 arrangement reminds me of some hillbilly music.

Bonnie, the Beatles were filmed in the Cavern in 1962 by Granada TV, one of the largest TV companies in the UK at the time. They had the franchise which covered the North West of England for the ITV network and while they made major programmes to be networked across the country they were also contractually obliged to produce local programming, of which this was an example.
The Beatles Cavern footage was shot simply for a brief regional report on the then-local Merseybeat phenomenon and if it had been, say, Gerry and the Pacemakers playing on that day it would probably be them on film. (In fact Gerry and co were filmed later at the Cavern).
No doubt most people involved thought that The Beatles and their contemporaries would be forgotten in a few months time.

Nice vid Pete. Very good eyes to pick up that girl singing. The main " film" is from " Some Other Guy" one of the very first post Pete performances. BUT it's Pete on the drums on this studio performance. Raw. Rowdy ( even in suits) but valuable in their development.

Azi Smythe. I agree. And this song was way ahead of its time in 1962. As a group , it was a great catchy tune and the start of many other hits from the 1963 - 1965 era. Still sounds great today. Would have been a hit if it was recorded as a single back in 1962 without a doubt.

I've read all the threads about who was better, Pete Best or Ringo Starr, and all I have to say about that is I found a TH-cam video where Carl Perkins invited Ringo Starr to be a guest drummer and lead singer for "Honey Don't", which we all know, was covered by the Beatles . Drummers are strange creatures, and those who can also sing are rare indeed. Ringo Starr is one of the rare ones who can not only play but sing. Whether he was a better drummer is immaterial. Whether he was a great singer is also immaterial. The fact that he could do both was instrumental in the success of the Beatles.

That beat dadada bum bum dadada bum bum, was the sound that made them famous. It was similar to other sounds of the times, but the blend was so distinctly them.
They tried to record a version for their second British album ("Beatles For Sale") but weren't happy with any of the takes (plus George Martin didn't like the song at all) so it was dropped. A couple of the takes were combined for the first "Anthology" CD.

I swear that I've followed the Beatles since about 1967 and at one point, had almost every Album that premiered songs as fresh releases. The Let it Be Album I had contained "One after 909" and that's the first time I ever heard or knew of it. So I'm really surprised that they wrote that song in 1957 and that was a year after I born! Even though I knew a lot about the Beatles, I was no 'walking encyclopedia' about the band. I just knew more about them than any other band I knew and listened to.
David Gilmore, (Pink Floyd), said that he got his early ''inspirational start' from the Beatles, as many other Rock & Roll bands of the period would later admit. In fact, I think it's very difficult to say "My favorite song of all time is...". For me, it's impossible to say what my favorite all time song is. That essentially equates to: I don't have a favorite song.
However, my favorite band was and still is the Beatles with a close second being Pink Floyd. I hear many similarities in the lyrics & music of the songs from both bands and even more so between the songs written by Lennon and Gilmore. Not so much the specific words or notes, but the similarity in they way that they were consistently fitting the lyrics and music together so that each of the two components, (the lyrics & music) supported one another.
There are many good songs from many bands, but the really great songs are always the ones that came together in that way. It's a "genius thing" and I'm afraid that it all seemed to come to an end sometime between 2004 and 2007. History has a way of making full circles and then repeats itself. The music of this, and the last generation has truly lost the entire point and talent of the previous years.
This is very likely due to the commercialism mindset of the large recording producers, who found it more profitable for them if they keep the music they'll produce in line with the trends and events of today. That way, they can sell the productions to TV & Radio commercial advertisements. They avoid bands because then they need to accept a smaller profit for themselves.
In addition, the music can't be easily bargained out of the writers and band members. A large number of bands from the 70's through the 90''s have often mentioned how the production companies were constantly reconfiguring the contracts. Many interviews with writers disclose the precarious relationship with the recording labels. Large recording producers are not artistically talented, but they're certainly greed-motivated.
I think the recording producers have finally got what they were shooting for and as usual, when an outside, avaricious-minded, influence imposes its guidelines, you can bet the results is a great reduction in quality and a large jump in quantity. That's the music of today, thanks to those people who worship the dollar bill.

Love the old recordings. You did a great job of syncing up the Cavern performance (Some Other Guy), with this recording of One After 909. I do think it was Pete on drums in this recording (heavy on the bass drum). He was a great drummer for the Beatles when they played live. That raw pounding rock got the audiences crazy, and he had a ton of fans. I've always been a fan of his too. Still, I do believe that Ringo was ultimately a better fit for the band personality wise, and he was more creative with the entire kit, which added a lot, especially once they secluded themselves into the recording studios. It's a shame the way they handled his sacking, though,...after all they had been through together. They were young, I guess, and just didn't know how to handle it properly/honorably. In the end though, it all worked out...even for Pete.

True. BUT,..George Martin wasn't impressed with Ringo either at first, and used a session drummer anyway after hearing him. He was very picky, particularly when it came to drums, and he often used session drummers. I really do believe that If the other Beatles had liked Pete more, they would have stuck with him, and it would have worked out similarly. Different...but the fame would have been similar. In my opinion, George Martin's genius was the crucial addition to the Beatles' direction. Ringo, in my opinion, was NOT a game changer. But I will repeat my agreement with you,..that Ringo was definitely a better match for the band (personality AND drumming skills).
James Sullivan Actually, pretty sure George Martin had never heard Ringo play when he hired Andy White to play on Love Me Do. And that was the only time an outside drummer ever played on a Beatle song. Other than that, I agree that George Martin was crucial. He was definitely the 5th Beatle if there ever was one.

I read back in 1970, just as the Beatles about to release the album Let It Be that One After 909 was one of their earlier songs as early as 1960, before the Beatles even made it to the U.S.
They lived for perfection....took 10yrs...and mastery....in between...no compromise.....32 takes if necessary until 4am...DONE.
I was aware of this song, and they had it on the books for several years. They only put it on the last Album because they needed a song to fill the LP

From the time I first heard the original version of this song on the 1995 issue of the Anthology collection, I've always liked it better than the 1970 Let It Be version. It's a rocker. You can dance to it. Their 1970 arrangement reminds me of some hillbilly music.
This is the first time I heard this version. Let It Be version is my fav. I mean don’t get me wrong this is great too.
