As a former crewleader for a blast and paint facility at a railyard where we'd strip, spray and re-stencil all kinds of rail cars...I can tell you that 4 hours is not that bad at all for laying down primer on a semi frame, especially considering that youre making due with what you've got and dont have a whole paint facility to work in.
Solid work, Matt. 🍻
yep, I thought so too. That's a lot of surface to cover, form a thousand different angles.
There will be some body guys that will be cringing, but let them cringe. Not a bad job. It is coming along nicely.
@@paulwiley9102 I was worried this was going to be one of those start and probly not finish jobs....then I realized it's not my garage I'm watching! 😂
Definitely enjoyable to watch him work on this old thing

I say wear a mask and we'll there it be on you.
I can't wait to see this truck back to its former (but improved) glory and back on the road!
You are proof that the most important thing in getting something done is to get started.
The hardest step is the first one.
The most important step is the next one.
Ok so I’ve never really been the guy who talks about safety in the past, but after a recent accident that caused me to get 21 stitches in a finger and come close to losing it, safety is higher up on my list currently lol. Seeing you spend lots of time under that frame with just a chain between you and severe injury, or more than likely a gruesome death, was a bit concerning. You can get hurt in an instant, and you’ll think “why was I so stupid taking that risk?” I just got in a hurry and put my hand in the wrong place and nearly crushed my finger off, and after 2 months it’s still healing and I wish I would’ve just taken the minimal effort to be a little safer. It wouldn’t have taken you 2 minutes to go get something to stick under that frame as a safety in case the chain broke. I’ve always been taught to never trust my life to hydraulics also. I know we all do in certain situations, but this was an extended period of time where something could’ve went wrong. Stay safe brother and keep on doin what you’re doin I’ve always enjoyed your videos and thought if I lived a little closer we’d definitely be buddies cause we both dig old stuff.
This Autocar is looking better every time.
I saved Matt’s video until after I watched the golfers struggling with the Troon course at the Open. I think Matt did the primer coat in about the same wind that was blowing over in Scotland.
1. Again good editing to use speeded up shots to condense some of the painting.
2. Glad to see a mask used while painting. Good to see final results.
3. Read comment that Matt should get painter overalls. Maybe then Eva wouldn’t have to throw away his shirts.
4. Glad to see ongoing progress on the Autocar; lots of interest in that project.
5. Wish more viewers would show Matt support and loyalty so he can expand what he’s doing. He has lots of thumbs-ups, but we should try to get him up to a million subscribers.
Yeah buddy, let's go! Based on the thumbnail, the OSHA Song needs to make an appearance!
"Come with me..."
@@MacFinn-wp2vn "...and you'll see..."
"Come with me, and you'll be in a world of OSHA violations" 😄
My mind immediately went to "shake hands with danger" lol, i feel old
The Osha song needs a music video!!! 😂
Matt, for a non-painter you certainly did well with primer application and the frame and chassis paint job.
My dad had Acars hauling coal here in W.V. I was raised riding in them, then driving. It makes me so happy to see you restoring this one! One of the toughest and best-driving trucks hauling coal back in the day. Mack had a tough truck but they didn't drive like an Autocar! I wish you could find the round bumper that came on them, I think that made the look of them.
Matt ! Thanks for all your hard work keeping us entertained. I am a retired truck driver and heavy equipment operator! good job friend and keep up the good work!
Anyone ever think they’d hear Diesel Creek say “I need to close the doors quickly to preserve the AC in my shop”? 😂😂😂
Still remember when he built the "container-shop" feels like a year ago...
Can't be letting the 'bought' air out!
Glad matt is putting that big bumper back on the truck ,that's half of its character & it wouldn't be the same without it ! You've done plenty of weight reduction to the frame already matt so it's a win win .😊Really enjoying this build & I'm a big autocar fan .🤘
Making cold air in summer costs money!
@@jjMcCartan9686 me too , i love these old trucks ,, Autocar trucks are built like tanks ,,i work for a farm near wherei live that has one of these trucks and it has that same front bumper,
I think you are an awesome man and I wish you the best in all your projects
I will be so excited when you get your bridge crane installed and operating. Yesssssss.
Indeed kinda of a small shop to be maneuvering a fork lift around in..
Fabulous stuff as always thanks, Matt
I know it will be great when Matt has the bridge crane and we will probably get 3 or more videos just from that. I have to say, Matt not having a proper bridge crane makes the show even more interesting to watch IMHO.
Hi Matt Well done with the painting Good Job. As a retired painter can I suggest you get a set of painters overhauls it will make cleaning your self up after painting much easier. Keep up the excellent work I look forward to your next post on the Autocar. Best wishes Alan
The output shaft for the front diff is made to be unbolted at the 4 bolt retainer and pulled out the back of the axle housing as an assembly. Then you can inspect the output shaft bearing and retainer for wear and install a new seal and gasket. surprised to see someone still has SQHD's rebuilt on the shelf. FYI test fit an axle shaft in both units to make sure they have the same spline count each one, those units were available with two different spline counts for SLHD and SQHD.
Hi Matt. I’ve been watching for about a year now and yesterday I went back and watched the series of videos on the ‘57 Autocar from 3-4 years ago. I was struck by how far you’ve come since then and I just wanted to say how impressed I am with all you’ve been able to do since those early days of working in the mud! I found myself thinking that you should use one of your forklifts to unload the heavy truck parts from your flatbed, then quickly realized that you didn’t even have a forklift back then, lol.
Sometimes we get caught up in our busy lives and we forget how much we’ve really accomplished, so I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your videos. I admire your dedication to saving old iron from the scrap yard and I wish you continued success in following your passion. Whenever you get frustrated, just remember how far you’ve come and keep on truckin’ brother.
Welcome back
A weekend without DIESEL CREEK is tough going
Nice work on the AUTOCAR
I really enjoy watching the process and progress on most ALL of your projects. I was laughing with a boyhood friend today. We used to take summer school every year to kill off some required academic class for the following year. We did this so that we could take the shop classes that we could NEVER fit into our college prep schedules. This is so that we could learn the techniques for doing projects on our resurrected cars and trucks! Thanks for the memories!
Matt good to see you continuing work on the AutoCar When you got the Mac at auction the Mac will not replace the AutoCar for heavy hauling. Glad to see you hard at work on the older machines I am 92 year old viewer watching you work from day one You are one of a kind lov e tou
While I love the Autocar, the Mack is actually setup for heavy haul. As Scrappy pointed out the drop axle needs duals, which means its a 20k pound axle. Combined with the drive axles allows him legally 54k pounds on the three rear axles, plus it has a 20k pound steer axle. So depending on bridge laws out his way the truck is legally good for 74k pounds itself. The Autocar guessing at a 15k steer and 34k for the rear tandem means its only good for 49k pounds total. Both trucks might have 46k pound drives, but in Idaho you can only be that heavy with unprocessed commodities. A lot of states have different regulations, but from the three states I am familiar with, the Mack would be fine at 74k pounds plus what ever the trailer is good for. The Mack and a tri axle lowboy out around me would be good for 128k pounds gross, which is the max weight for generally annual oversized load permits.
@@BlueDually4x4 the unfortunate thing about the Mack purchase is that it makes the Autocar redundant. Every time Matt mentions running the Autocar down the interstate at 70 I shudder lol. I look forward to seeing how this build ends up but I'd keep this as a local unit and use the Mack for any long trips.
I love the color Matt and I can tell you do have some skills as a painter. Turned pout fantastic.👍
Matt, this is why people like you so much. Most of us know squat about painting and would never notice your mistake. You point it out anyway. Keep it up man.
We're all like that. Have you ever made anything and then shown it off? What's the first thing you say? Oh, I made a slight mistake here, and over here, but it came out OK. I know I do, even though I try not to.
,
I am not going to restore a big boy like this but I enjoy watching you go through each detail & I know you will want it done right. Waiting on the next video.
35 years ago I used to sandblast and prime antique and classic car frames and we used epoxy primer then, you will not have to worry about that frame for the rest of your life!😊
Etch primer you mean?
Fantastic to see Matt actually intentionally paint something. Would be great to see more of the machines get some paint love in the future.
Oh nice they painted the 3rd Members with Red oxide Primer Nice Matt and some doors cool 29:30 @Diesel Creek
Many reasons to like you Matt..
But the ones that stand out are your down to earth approach.. your honesty.. and your positive attitude.
Pointing out your painting mistakes.. most of us wouldn't know it. But do appreciate it.
Great choice on the grey color. It is so satisfying watching the old girl get restored and getting a fresh coat of paint.
Love all of you at disel creek take care and God bless all of you at disel creek
It’s a frame.Nobody should expect perfection.It’s fine.
Just nothing that sticks out like a sore thumb and most importantly, protects against rust 😃
Heck if the entire truck looks like a rolled on paintjob its still better then most paintjobs I see people do.
Good job on persving a classic rig Matt a big thumbs up to you 👍
No need to put yourself up against what others do, as long as you see progress and are happy with the results carry on. I have been painting since the late 1980's nice job. good to see progress on the auto car. Love seeing you and Sammy do videos together, thanks for the introduction. Cheers from Canada.
Just to throw in my 2 cent's, I really like the dark grey! I think it look's rich! Really nice color!
A new Diesel Creek on Friday! Fantastic!
An episode about the Construcktor perfect! I was in the garage doing my "puttering" and my son came to see what I was endeavoring in. I said, "There's a new Disel Creek out today...and it's about the Autocar!" He said, "Oh, crap! I gotta' watch that!" and ran back in the house 😆
Love the content, Matt! Especially the orange Autocar. I've watched all the videos about it. Keep it up!
I feel your pain about the 6.14 gearing. My military 5-ton is riding on 6.44 top loaders. I'm good for 55 but that's pushing 2100 rpm's.
It's nice that you show the mistakes great job
Love seeing the Autocar getting some fresh lipstick . Great work Matt 👍
Thanks! 👍

That’s cool I don’t think there’s any copyright issues with that. lol.
Howdy Matt, I'm a bit like you, 42 projects gets overwhelming at times. The difference is you video it and share with the world, allowing us all to be a part of your achievements, especially us who can't do it any more, we live through you. Don't worry about the negative ones, they are the ones who never do anything but be negative. But be proud and recognise how far you've come, the drive through shop is an example. Ive painted machinery and it is extremely hard with 2 pack (in the heat), wish I could help, that paint will last for a lifetime. Excellent editing, music, content, you are one of the best. Keep up the good work mate, love you from AUS.
Enjoyed watching you do the work LOL My semi days are over thank God. Retirement is really good.
Thumbs! glad to see you start tackling that Autocar, looks great.
When paintwork has runs, it just means there's plenty of paint on it. Good job
Thank you Matt.
Hi Matt, I have only been a fan for about 8 months.I immediately fell in love with your work.I went back to the beginning and watched every episode (it was a LOT of watching ) but I really enjoyed it.Thank you for sharing your life with us,your a good man.
Welcome to the Diesel Creek fandom! I cannot remember when I started watching, maybe 5-6 years ago? If you like this check out Andrew Camarata, he has very similar content, just less focus on repairing and restoring but, it is balanced with "landscaping"(it goes far beyond just doing some mundane retaining wall) projects for clients and his own property. Always an enjoyable watch just like Diesel Creek!
😮good luck Matt getting this truck restored and running love to see these old disels running
Love the Auto Car rebuild. It is truly an icon and will soon be a head turner on the big roads with a dozer in tow.
All those easter eggs you left in that video! I am really interested in the little earth mover. Noticed that you are also restoring the old 150 service truck. Looks like you are working on a bulldozer there by the sawmill. Lots going on. Looking forward to more videos.
A lot of the trucks I drove of the vintage of yours had 4:11 gears. Even with small engines, 290 Cummings, and 10 speed transmission they would pull 80k. Up hills was slow going (40 mph) but doable. If you are planning on getting much heavier you will want the 13 speeds, or better yet 13 speed with overdrive.
He has a bigger engine and a 13 speed for it, at the moment I forget it is was an over drive or double over drive.
Well you’ve Impressed the folks in sexton Pa for sure as they had many and it’s you. I had the opportunity to tour the factory in 78. It just enhanced the quality of The Autocar Brand. Thanks for sharing your paths of your life’s journey. Great stuff keep it up!!
That color gray is awesome and is gonna make that orange cab shine .Black frames are over rated . Great choice
Matt, benefit from my advanced age & wisdom - thoroughly paint all of the crawl-under, inside, and bend over weirdly parts first, or in 2- alternate stints, then shoot the side(s), depending on the choice while relatively 'resting' yet still shooting paint onto the metal, save the 'easy' part for last & it helps work out some of those new 'kinks' your body just acquired painting the awkward parts.👍🇺🇸😎
And as far as automotive/truck frames and underbodies go, I am still lobbying, while searching for the perfect shades to patent the color shades for the color 'American Roadfilm' with varying shades for regions, and seasons. See it new, let people get used to it, then 500,000 miles later, still looks new🤣
The old truck is coming along can't wait to see it all together.
Looking fantastic Matt. Doing a great job. Great video
For what that truck will be, I don't think it needs to be perfect, it just needs to be functional. It's definitely functional and it looks sharp, so it's a win!
Hey Matt, OTC makes a pair of "cone" pliers that makes the removal of those axle cones much easier. I used to sell them in truck shops.
Love laying in bed looking for something to watch before bed and I find a new diesel creek episode 🤠🇦🇺
It's good you're primering with white, or a contrasting color from your finish color, which I'm assuming will be dark, such as a charcoal grey or whatever. Regarding your windshield: Would it be possible you could replace the glass without a center divider, and have a one-piece windshield? Somebody somewhere in America should be able to make one for you. Only thing is you'd have to extend the sweep of the passenger-side windshield wiper. I have been looking forward to the Autocar transformation!
BTW, the finish color is perfect. Ya got good taste.
Great to see the progress being made on this, and the other projects in the background
Thanks for sharing the whole story with us on this lovely truck.
Spent years painting truck chassis and heavy trailers Matt its a slow job if you do it properly you are doing a great job looks good regards Les
Not a Sunday video, what a sweet treat!
smooth spout product placement. someone owes you 69,420.69$ for that one. great vid. they always are.
I wish I was getting paid for that 😂
Hey Matt... you know an overhead crane would have been really handy getting those out 😅😅
Looking good my friend.
Love that old iron.
You'll need to give your Mack a matching paint job 😉
Looks Real Good Matt. Turing out Very Nice.
I'm sure someone else probably mentioned it, but on those axle shafts, after you remove the nuts, use a sledge and strike the end where those two half moon risers are. That's why they are there..
Couple hard blows, will pop the axle out.
She's going to make you a nice truck.
TGP
Those look like Weller differentials you got. I’m an account manager for Weller. Good choice. Make sure you preserve the tags on them. We track everything by the number on the tag.
Rockwell SQHDs
He's swapping them out.
I was thinking Weller too. I worked in the Allison reman facility.
@@DieselCreek He is talking about Weller Remanufacturing , they rebuild all kinds of truck components.
Yeah good choice on not using weller. Their differentials are okay’ish. Do not, under any circumstance use any weller Detroit dt12 part. Everyone I have seen a customer install had to have oem shift controllers installed on them to go into gear. After the reman cost, r&l time. More diag time to figure out why the new trans won’t take gear, then r&l trans again to install a new shift controller, they end up spending more than just buying oem from the start.
I was hoping for a weight on the chunks. Great video and thanks for sharing.
Mat, I like what you are doing. You should be proud of yourself for taking something that was old and worn out and putting new life into it.
Great job Matt, that color looks amazing! Hope the wheel centers and cab will be orange, it will stand out nicely.
It's in the triple digits here in Tampa Florida I'm so adapted to the heat your 70 degree shop would have me shivering 🤧
Matt
Take a 36"x 3/16 brake line and make yourself a proper blow gun.
Throw that siphon feed gun away and get a gravity feed. So much less overspray.
😊 Keep in mind epoxy primer has an open time during which you can topcoat it. After this time the topcoat won't stick and you will have adhesion problems. Ask me how I know.
Your buddy Sam gave you great advice. I've used PPG epoxy primer and that stuff seals out everything! I sprayed it on bare metal and never top coated it and never had a rust problem. It lasts forever and is really durable. One of the best primers you can use to seal out rust and protect metal. The Autocar is really going to look great after this.
It is good stuff but I've been told it does not like UV and should be top coated. I don't think it effects it's performance just it's color. I used under my car and clear coated it and it looks the same after 5 years. I had a ton of clear coat so I tried it, worked out.
Like the safety stands 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 OMG the truck fell while painting

I remember one of those trucks from about twenty years ago going down the road towards the air force base here. A very unique truck from the world's oldest builder.
I also had no idea what the numbers and scales on a paint mixing container meant. Once explained, it was quite easy to understand. I really enjoyed learning that, so thank you for taking the time to explain it. The chassis colour looks really, really good. That's going to be a very good looking lorry by the time you've finished.
Excellent. Matt I’d consider painting the hubs the same colour as the chassis. But ultimately it’s your call. Cheers from sunny down under
Matt: great solid work on refurbishing this old truck. You get a dinner when you’re done, let’s hear some credit from you about your wife and the part she plays to assist your continual success. You’ve come a long long way in the past years, I think crediting her with the part she does would greatly appreciated.
Matt, watching you using a hammer and chisel to remove the axels. I watched a man remove the axels from his Pete. He loosened the axle nuts he used a 12 pound sledge to hit the center. This compressed the gasket and allowed the cone washers to release then pulled the axel out. Might work for you.
People always say this. I have tried it several times I’ve never gotten it to work unfortunately.
She does quite a bit behind-the-scenes that is for sure.
Makes all the difference, having a good woman back at home base. Be like @DieselCreek and choose wisely, fellas.

Well Matt talk about rise to the challenge nothing seems to phase you spraying the chassis and sorting the diff ratios amazing ! I’m hooked from the Uk 👍
i found you because of the church renovation (i like that stuff) but some how i did not leave, still enjoying the content as a non equipment and construction person. enjoyed the dreamshop videos hopefully you can match it with a dreamhouse in the future.
Increase the paint flow and move fast. Cut the time in half and get better finsh. Important to increase paint flow when doing the cab and hood to avoid that dry spray when you lap back. In our Freightliner truck assembly plants, two guys paint a chassis in 5 minutes. Thats before air and electricsl lines though. Great video. You are a machine!
When I hear you do the retake of wording in your video it reminds me that doing videos is not as easy as it looks, and it speaks volumes of how much effort you put into your work sir . Thank you

as far as replacement door panels go, try corroplast sheets covered with your choice of interior fabric or vinyl. it's tough, water resistant and easy to work with.
Bout time you posted. Sheesh, I was going through withdrawal here. FINALLY. You are getting back to the Auto Car. Sheesh. I was hoping you would get it going again before I died of old age. I am already old, so glad to see this.

Good job Mat. Before you are done, you'll be a pro paintin' machine! You are already a pro mochanic in my book. Are you going to put in a 13 speed tranny to go along with the new diff's? If you don't do it now, you will be regretting it in the future. Great video Mat. Good luck with the rebuild. God bless you and keep you safe.
Yo Matt, The air receiver you had set up for the outside paint job was a good move, the word you were looking for was “Condensate”, water in the air. You do great work and describe it well for non technical viewers, I look forward to many more, thank you.
The only thing is that those air compressors do not need to run at idle for long periods of time. They are made to make air and the unloader gets hot running at idle. It would be better to crack open another valve to atmosphere to make the compressor have to work. I have did this many times over thirty years of having a sandblasting and painting business. I was thinking of getting a smaller compressor for the paint work, but then that's just more to have to move to a job and maintain. Now, I don't do any mobile work, so glad I didn't get a small gasoline air compressor.
Hes not an idiot…
He was referring to a “Coalescer”, a piece of industrial pneumatics hardware used to remove oil and water from the air.
