  • Join your host and 28-year Bona training and claims veteran, Todd Schutte, as he shares the scary details behind “floors gone bad”; complete with crime scene evidence - the “rest of the story” - how these relate to the Bona Commandments (that’s why we follow them) - and possible resolutions to correct these horror shows! We all know that no matter how good the products; how good your skills, and how long your experience - sometimes things just go wrong (and sometimes it’s because of an issue with one or a combination of the above as well). So, when things do go South, how do we analyze the issue(s) and work our way through to solutions for our customer?

    I really appreciate all your educational videos. Im a hardwood contractor just getting started in a small rural town. Pretty hard to get reliable information

    Learned a lot to troubleshoot my refinishing adventure in a 1920’s home! Entryway had traffic stains where the old finish was completely worn away and suffocated by carpet for who knows how long. I’m in the Midwest, so salt is used for ice melt and my Bona Mega looks like that footprint, but in big blotches. Oof.

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alex - The footprint in the video eventually faded as the finish cured out; but not sure if that's the same for all salt reactions or not. Your lessons learned are similar to what a professional goes through over years and years of engaging with different floors in becoming an experienced Craftsman. Also why we recommend that folks hire an experienced hardwood flooring professional when their floors need refurbished or other service. Hope it all turns out o.k. in the longrun!

    I used bona traffic hd commercial semi-gloss finish about 6 months ago. Followed everything in spec instructions. Used some painters tape along edges, and the finish peeled off the floor with the tape

      Hi @Nick-xu7gq - Sorry to hear about this issue, as that shouldn't happen. Too many possible variables to ask and cover here. Please give your tech services team a call at (800) 872-5515. Thanks!

      Glad you think so, David! We've run into so many different situations over the years that we figure it serves everyone best to get these examples out there so that they don't have to run into it themselves. All of us is better than one of us!

    I just applied boba mega one extra matte finish and after 7 day of curing time I see foot smudges and it was perfect when I applied, now it looks horrible. I fallowed the directions very well before applying. I was so happy how my floor looked and now I’m afraid to do next coat over.

      Hello @LubomiraStieber-sz5gr - As stated for this same question on another of our videos, sorry to hear that your experiencing some issues with your finished floor, but please give our Technical Services team a call at (800) 872-5515, as there are too many variables involved when sanding and finishing a wood floor, for us to try and make an accurate assessment and repair plan on this channel. Thanks!

    I need to do only a tiny place. Is it available in a small kit?

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sindhu - Not sure exactly which product you're needing, but we don't have any small kits available. Professionals have their methods to mix up smaller amounts when needed for repairs.

    Where should the production info be stamped on The Bona Traffic HD container? Does it contain the actual production date or a code to be deciphered?

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @jf-oz3pn - It should be ink-stamped on the front bottom of the container, right underneath the label. The first two numbers are the year and the second two numbers are the week, so it should be pretty straight forward as to the "born on" date. Also, know that although our shelf life statement is "1-year in an unopened container" from date of manufacturing, the typcial product stability is much longer. Best way to test is to actually mix it up with the Hardener and check for an overabundance of particles and chunks (which usually occurs because the Hardener is too old and has become too thick over time, thus not being able to fully incorporate into the Part A with the required shaking). If it all looks fine once mixed, you should be good to go. If any doubts, opt for a fresher jug of Finish and Hardener. Cheers!

    What are these little cube sanders these guys are using for spot touch ups? I’d like to get ahold of a set. Nippers or something? I can’t find anything like that with a google search.

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @jeffp7958 - They're STECK NIB files that can be found numerous places on the internet. They come from the automotive bodywork/paint industry but also work great to remove debris, hair, etc from coats of sealer and finish. Get the "coarse" one as the "fine" one will clog up. Hope that helps!

    I have applied first coat of natural sealer and it’s rough. Do I have to abrade before applying the second coat of the sealer?

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi @rogeliorebaya - Depends on how rough and what's underneath. If the floor is stained, then you probably want to put on another coat of sealer before abrading back for smoothness. If natural, then you'd be o.k. to abrade now, though lots of professionals wait and just abrade before the final coat to ensure a smooth as possible final surface.

      @@BonaProfessional Thanks! Another question, After applying the first coat of Bona traffic HD, how long do you have to wait before Abrading and applying the final coat?

    Hi there. I can't remove a stain of dog urine. The floor was covered with Mega One 3 months ago with 2 layers of the product. Covering the floor with Bona doesn't prevent this kind of events?

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @RAFAHELL52 - Sorry to hear you're having this issue with your hardwood floors. All hardwood floor finishes are formulated to be moisture and stain resistant, but not water (nor urine) proof. It would not be a good thing if they were 100% waterproof as moisture vapor coming in from the sides or underneath the floor needs to be able to migrate up through the finish (otherwise the wood will swell and get damaged and or exhibit mildew and mold growth if moisture is trapped underneath). However, most modern finishes, including Bona Mega One also exhibit excellent resistance to spills and stains - thus their wide use in bars, restaurants, etc. My personal experience with Bona's waterborne finishes and dog urine involved our Boston terrier as she neared the end of her life - had accidents every day on the floor near her doggie door (for over a year); and we didn't always get it cleaned up right away. Zero urine stains on/in the finish and none in the wood either.
      The most common entry point for any type of wet spill on the floor is not directly down thru the finish (because of the very good chemical and stain resistance of these films), but running down in between any open board seams and end joints; and even sometimes down through the soft grain if you have a really open grained floor. The best way to minimize those entry points is to keep a steady level of humidity in the house, year around, so that the floor isn't constantly swelling and shrinking in response to changes in moisture content. Hope that helps you understand a bit what's happening with your floor.
      If you have further concerns, please contact the professional who completed the work on your floors for an in-person consultation.

    I use a scraper to shave bubbles or a hair out of the finish .

    • @BonaProfessional
      @BonaProfessional  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the input, Paul! Depending on what the debris is in the finish will determine if we use a scraper or NIB file. Both work great in the hands of a skilled Craftsman!

      Hi @superRobertoist - Too many possibilities to try and understand or resolve that here. Please have your floor guy give our Technical Services team a call at (800) 872-5515. We need to find out more about their whole process to possibly help troubleshoot what the issue(s) may be and how to solve them. Thanks!
