      Have you tired the method I show in this video to check for leaking pads? My best advice for you would be to take your flute to a flute technician to have it looked over and fixed. That way you know it isn't you, it's your flute ;) ~Rebecca

      I wasn’t ever yelled at (that sucks) my teacher would just ask if it’s okay. Or, you’d have to tell him yourself. Although, yes, I have that same issue, same octaves... :(

    So helpful! A few months ago, I bought a used flute in anticipation that I'd begin playing again this winter (it's been 20 years). It's been like riding a bike - it's all coming back and I'm so happy my tone is still what it was! However, there is definitely a problem somewhere, as suddenly I'll get squeaks and squawks just like those in this video when I play D and E Flat particularly. It's maddening and had me at first feeling like it was me! I'm going to take it to a tech ASAP.

    If you shine a small bright torch down the tube of your flute sections as you hold each key down leaky pads show up quite well if they aren't closing properly.

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I've heard this before but haven't tried it. I imagine the light is easier to see depending on how large the leak is. This would be a good thing to check if the backs of the keys are leaking instead of the fronts. It's tricky to tell. Good idea! -Rebecca

      @LearnFluteOnline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to take so long to get back to you! I'm very glad that this video helped. It is common for a flute to slowly go out of adjustment overtime, just because the pads can wear and shrink, causing small leaks. Nothing a bit of upkeep can't fix, though. I understand the frustration for these players, most of these are just adjustments and take minutes to correct. Sadly there are fewer of us repairmen and repairwomen around. I see way too many well meaning dads and teachers trying their best but in the end it ends up as more work for me. What bothers me most is that there is no need for a teacher to yell and ridicule a student. Music is meant to be an enjoyable experience.

      Hi, for sure I can help you. It’s a real probability that you can use some better technique as you play the flute. This will help your notes come out nice and clear. If you’re on my email list be sure to join my 10 day tone workshop I hold each year. It’ll clear up every issue you may have. For now, know that each note has its own personality and accompanying technique in order to clear it up. You can start by being sure you are using enough air. Many beginners blow too softly which doesn’t support good tone. Let’s keep learning. Come to learnfluteonline.com and get started in the members area so I can help you further. Fun fun. :) Rebecca

    So my f, f sharp and g sharp all sound a bit like this, but not as much to this extent. It also happens really inconsistently, sometimes those keys don’t work at all, and then maybe like a few hours later it could be working again? I’m nervous to take it to the repair guy in case he’s like it’s working fine, but I know just randomly it won’t work again? It’s been like this for a few weeks now, what should I do?

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fiona, I"m sorry you're having troubles with a few of your notes. Yes, it sounds like you have a leak. I'd double check that it's not just you pressing harder some days.. that could be the difference that makes the notes come out nicely some days and not on others. I hope you get it figured out. Maybe it's just a small leak that can be fixed quickly. -Rebecca

    I have had 2 flutes and my F, Eb and D for both of them sound off tune and barely play. I can't tell if there's a leak in them, but the same thing is for both of them. I don't know how to fix it.

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sorry you’ve had troubles with your flutes lately. It definitely is a little suspicious that they both seem to have the same troubles on the same notes. It does sound like there are some leaks. (Assuming you are using the correct fingerings). The easiest way to check this would be to have another flute player see if they have the same trouble when they play. Is this a possibility? If they are still sounding like they are leaking on those notes, then you will want to take them to a technician and have them worked on. Good luck! I hope they are in great playing shape soon. - Rebecca

    Okay so my flute plays fine going UP the b flat scale or just about any of them. Once I start going back down the F and E flat barely come out (it sounds too airy). My teacher said everything was fine with it though so don't know if it's because this is a new flute or if the problem is me. We have a concert in 3 weeks and I don't know what to do :(

      Hmm. Ok- my theory is that you're dropping your right arm/hand as you move down which is causing new positioning for your air stream. Focus on this next time you play. See if you can be consistent in your air flow on the way down as well as keeping the flute nice and level (so it doesn't droop off your lip). Good luck at your concert. You'll be great! -Rebecca

      Hi Benson,
      I'm sorry your note isn't working properly. Based on your description it sounds like you have a flute pad that needs to be replaced. This would be why the note isn't working unless you press harder. To fix this, you need to find a flute technician and make an appointment. Best of luck! -Rebecca

    What do you do if it does sound better when you push harder? Does that mean there’s a leak?

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes- that's what it means. Either your key has a little problem in its mechanism that isn't allowing the key to lay flat, or the pad is puffed/frayed etc. which also causes the leak. You can live with it for a while, but ultimately you'll want to get it fixed by a good technician. Good luck! Thanks for asking here. :) -Rebecca

    Hello Rebecca
    What causes a leaky flute?

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question, Elizabeth. There are a couple of reasons you'd have a leak on your flute. The first is that your pads might be puffy or frayed causing the leak. The other reason is that the key may be bent a little (from poor hand position over time.. or bumping it) causing it to not lay quite "flat". I hope this helps answer your question. Keep playing the flute - lots of fun to have here. :) Rebecca | Learn Flute Online

    I'm curious about how it can be that turning a screw on your flute will almost certainly make it worse. Shouldn't familiarity with the mechanisms and basic maintenance be part of being a flautist? It is very simple. Most children could do it given proper tools and guidance. You can't go running to a technician for every tiny little thing.

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt, thank you for your comment. Turing screws on your flute is sometimes an easy thing that you can do. However, not every screw on your flute is meant to be screwed in all the way tight. Some are loose on purpose because that's where they need to be to keep the mechanism in the perfect spot. So, when a person begins to tighten the screws on their flute, it can really damage the mechanism because they don't know how tight to go. For beginners, I always suggest taking the flute to a technician to avoid damaging the mechanism more. Hope this helps! ~Rebecca

    • @davenatale850
      @davenatale850 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please don't encourage "children" to fix their own instruments. They will most likely cause more problems before they take it to dad, and then, let the fun begin! Simple regulation adjustments can be done very easily for a small fee. However, if there are faulty pads or bent keys or any number of other issues, you're better off letting a pro deal with it.

    one thing you can do is make a feeler gauge. Just take a pencil and remove the eraser and insert the red cello from some chewing gum or cig pack and re insert the eraser,; then adjust the screws so you "feel' the same amount of pull or drag when you remove the feeler from the keys. I'm a tech. Another thing you can do is purchase a battery operated leak light. you can get them at WAL-MART, made by GE, BATTERY OPERATED, cost about $10.

    • @LearnFluteOnline
      @LearnFluteOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leak light sounds like a great idea. Not sure what you mean by inserting a 'red cello from some chewing gum or cig pack'.. also, when you move one screw, it creates a chain reaction. Kind of scary to just take on yourself. (ask me how I know haha) I always recommend taking your flute to someone who is trained to get it right. I wish our flutes just stayed in perfect shape always, but things don't always stay primo. Thanks for the comment- I hope your flute plays great for you this week. :) -Rebecca
