Oh blimey😮 thanks for the shameless plug, I think 😂🤣. At the end of the day, I just love taking photos, editing and sharing them. Regarding keeping locations secret is a no no from me. Utter selfishness on their part, nothing more, nothing less. Again, it's about sharing. Great to hear you both had a lovely break. Hugs to Sarah, bless her.
So many great points! really enjoyable. Hope Sarah is better now, how horrid. Keeping locations secret is something only bad photographers do, unless you have special access to a location, there really is no reason to do it. Hugh makes a great point too about EXIF data, why wouldn't people share that? It's a great way to understand what has been taken and how. Keep up the great work, so enjoyable.
Thanks Adam, I’m in two minds on the exif dada which I’ll go into more on the next vlog. Yeah Sarah is better, thank you for asking. Stitches out and all recovered. Thanks again mate, all the best.
Very interesting video Ben, i agree with your points. On the sad side its alot about the world we live in . Regarding images i find some take great images but dont get hardly any likes but if a certain photographer took it they would get loads of likes. I judge people by what they are not who they are. All the best and take care.
Hi Ben I'm loving this series of 'Let's Talk Photography' it raises some very interesting comments. Unfortunately I've been away myself recently so couldn't leave a comment on the previous topic (Social Media) I will say however that I take photo's for myself and if others like them (including Camera Club judges) then that's a bonus but I certainly don't have a pity party if I don't get a large number of likes. Regarding this week's topic. I'm happy to share locations that I visit although I have yet to find a new 'Honeypot location' I do visit the well known spots and I do take the classic shot but then like to explore the area further hoping to find a different composition. I've just re-joined Vero as my previous phone (Huawei) wouldn't allow me to 🤔 😁 I'm also following you know although I need to upload all my recent images so not sure what images were previously uploaded
Great video again Ben. Keeping locations secret, oh I hate it when you watch a video and they tell you they can't share where they are because of whatever. I always find that people that do that are generally average at best photographers, so I think it has more to do with others not wanting to take better images than they can do. Loving the series Ben, really entertaining and you look to be getting a great following of people.
Great video Ben and some good thoughts here. I left IG for a while and went to Vero but almost daily down at the beach, someone asks me if I post my images on IG. I doubt anyone will ever ask "do you post your images on VERO"? It's a shame too because the images look so much better on Vero!
Thanks Paul, appreciated. Yeah, that’s the first question people ask, well at least the general public, “what’a your Insta?”. Maybe we need to keep the two running side by side 🤷♂️. Just a lot more work.

Ahhh the “SPS” or Secret Photography Society where the location is obvious but absolutely every image is labeled as “Mesa Arches” or some other ridiculously well known place. Some will state this is done to prevent damage to the actual location as it’s so delicate no human besides their self has ever set foot there… I’ve yet to find one of these amazingly special locations, thus I’ve been sharing the commonplace locations I’ve shot such as the 85 mile long 42 mile wide Organ Mountains rising 8990 feet above the sea. I’ve not felt the need to supply latitude/longitude coordinates, a general location will suffice… On a similar subject some photographers feel the need to strip away all traces of EXIF or photo specific details for fear someone would utilize their settings and thereby create the same exact photo. These photographs are in the “ESPS” or Extra Secret Photography Society. Perhaps they worked for the government at one point and learned to shred everything for fear of the news media finding out what they’ve been up to… Enough silliness, interesting talk this week and yes I was starting to wonder what had become of you. Glad to hear Sarah’s on the mend, and hoping you can find some additional time to get out and shoot.
Thank you so much Hugh, and love the abbreviations, I will have to use them, they did make me laugh. Good point about Exif too, that's something I tend not to share, purely because within 5 minutes the light can change making the original settings pointless, plus I also find that the light changes between lens, camera and also polarising filter. Thanks again mate and all the best.
If people feel the need to validate themselves with likes from complete strangers then they may want to reassess their life. If I take a nice photo I will edit it and send it to a few close friends. By the way, anyone that reads this please feel free to like my comment 😂
Hi Ben thank you for including my points. Now if I see videos entitled secret I do not watch them anymore. I cannot see the point of going out to a secret location taking video and images and not sharing it with your audience. The visual splendour of our countryside is there to share with everyone. Keeping a secret is a bit childish. The videos I have watched in the past that have been so called secret locations have not been that difficult to work out. The creators have done a poor job of keeping them secret. I say be open with your audience. A composition does not belong to one person, it is there for everyone to embrace, capture and experience as long as it not on private property.
Keep meaning to cover this subject myself, in current times with shorts and posts I would now class TH-cam as a social media. Vero I don't like, lots of creatives there which is nice but the audience there I feel is very limited. Instagram I feel has lost its way and could be heading the way of Flickr. Facebook and Twitter I binned a while back (wow this sounds grumpy 🤣) On a positive note I've really started to enjoy Tumblr of late, it's creative with a touch of a rebellious mindset.
I’ve never even given tumblr a look, I might have to give it a go Tim. It’s really interesting seeing people’s preferences and thoughts on social media. You’ll have to let me know your thoughts on the next one, keeping location’s secret. It’s would be great to hear. Thanks mate, all the best.
I am all for sharing locations, it does not bother me in the slightest that somebody may capture a better photograph, their either more creative, a better photographer, lucky or research well. I do not go for the honey pot locations, I like to try and find new areas that are not well photographed. I found a little wood near Mold in North Wales, called cascade woods, via the what3words app somebody shared and met a fellow photographer there. He was a 'wild lifer' waiting for the local dippers to come out of their nest, he had much better lenses than me, but I still got a photo I wanted, and was not bothered sharing the location with others - my son and his friend have been back to see the dippers and yellow wagtail as they are into Ornithology. So sharing helps others not just photographers. The only caution I have is when people do not respect the surroundings, as per your vlog on Tigers Clough and all the rubbish. I once followed a photographer on youtube , but stopped the moment I saw him trample over lots of bluebells just so he could get his shot ! So my thoughts is share away 👍
I would hazard a guess that anyone's "secret location" is known by at least a few others, so for landscape photographers, such behavior seems pretty silly. I can, however, appreciate the desire to keep things like nesting areas, breeding grounds, refuges, sanctuaries, etc., out of the ken of hordes of people, well intentioned or otherwise. This from someone whose primary photography interest has been wildlife for a long time. Back on the question of what we older folks did with our photos prior to social media: Nothing. We could hang them on the wall, put them in an album, or (most dreadful of all) do a slide show for friends/relatives in need of such punishment. I hope that Sarah has recovered from her fall.
Thank you so much Bill, yeah completely get that, and I guess there are reason on both sides. Haha I can imagine the slide shows were no different to the current instagram, who knows where it will develop next. Yes, thanks Bill, Sarah’s doing well, stitches out and fully recovered, it’s left her a little shocked though.
@@BenMcDonaldPhotography You have no idea of the dread felt by a teenager dragged to the house a friend of your parents to see that person walk in with 3 or 4 carousels (80 to 140 slides per) to show you their trip through the Panama Canal, accompanied by a boring monologue describing each one.
Next time we talk Keeping locations Secret, let me know your thought's.
