I agree with not giving out locations only if there’s a valid reason, nesting birds, protected land, otherwise let everyone know. If they get a better image than you ( always are with me ) then that says more about you than them, keep practicing, advice I need to take up more myself. You mentioned Tigers Clough and the rubbish, most, if not all, is left by locals and weekend visitors, I know I’m one of them, not that I leave rubbish but there’s a High School right next to it and many come past and hang around there on their way home. Hope you and yours are well Ben, loving this series but also can’t wait to see you out and about again.
Hi Ben , another well thought out vlog - This weeks question about too many photographers - short and sweet - I think there are too many , however there are not so many good to great photographers. There are also to many photographers, due to the extension of the camera to phones and other recording equipment, such as drones. The world is saturated with photographs, but I think that's a cool thing, they can capture moments in time and history for the future, something area ancestors could only paint 😀
A 3 hour wait in a queue? Sounds like a theme park. A lot of valid points made by yourself and the subscribers. Are there too many photographers? It's not something I would think about to be honest. But I have just spent 40 minutes thinking about it and I still can't give you a definitive answer 😅😂. I suppose from an artistic, creative point of view, the more the merrier. So, er... No? Really looking forward to others opinion on this question. Glad to hear that Sarah's doing well. Another great video mate 👍
Than you so much Mate, really appreciated. Haha, thank you for taking the time. I think the next will be a shorter video, but with some good points. Thanks again.
Good topic 👍 Ben, I don't like when YT photographer keep it secret, I mean there are some exception like disturbing wild life etc. but other than that it is purely greed!! Nowadays it's become my hobby to find out location of YT Photographer who intentionally hide it without valid reason 😀. Btw can you please keep background music bit low in your video it is distracting, thanks for sharing this video👍
It would be hard to find a secret location in North Wales, especially as there are several books dedicated to locations to photograph in this part of the country.
@@BenMcDonaldPhotography One of the most visited spots by photographers to North Wales is the so-called "lonely tree" at Llanberis, especially at sunrise. Another is the house by the river at Llanwrst, especially in Autumn. Yet there are far better locations throughout Snowdonia, sorry we've got to call it Eryri now, for photography. I much prefer to be on my own and if I visit somewhere that has a lot of photographers I tend to move on to somewhere more quieter. Places like Cwmorthin, Llyn Dinas, Rhyd Ddu. Beautiful scenery, usually very quiet. You might bump into another photographer, you can have a bit of a chat and move on, like when I met you last year at Spike Island. So for me too many photographers in an area at the same time is a big put off. But you have to look at it this way, everyone is entitled to go out and take a photograph and if it's busy in the National Park, I'm fortunate enough to be able to visit almost anytime as I live local
Just got back from a month+ long road trip across the country, so I've missed out on chiming in the last few weeks. I'm still in catch up mode on YT - if I ever do. Regarding location sharing - I can go either way, depending on the circumstances, but generally don't feel there is often that great of a reason to keep it secret. Then again, I've never really been to a site that isn't already public and widely known. In general there are many locations that are being overrun and damaged, but it's not the fault of photographers. Too many photographers? No. Too many people just snapping photos? Maybe. I'm all for having more serious photographers in the world and I completely support those that want to take a quick shot on their phone (or compact camera) to remember a location or event. What there is too much of is obnoxious snappers. You know the type, the person that will get in someone else's way to get a shot. It's the ones snapping with their phones, but making sure to use the selfie stick - even when not taking selfies. The people that just lack any type of courtesy because it's all about them. Thankfully that category is vastly outnumbered by other 'snappers'.
Sadly I've had a recent experience where the attention of photographers drove a nesting bird from her nest, resulting in the death of the eggs and chicks. I wish that others (it went viral on social media) had keep the location secret and I'd been more forceful in keeping photographers away. Sadly my own experiences with photographers have all been pretty bad-they become 'mission focused' and don't give a stuff about anything else.
@@BenMcDonaldPhotography I don't think too many, most of the problems photographers cause is as result of 'mission focus' where everything becomes about the photo. Sadly, I've known of a part of the world where this led to people walking off a cliff! [sorry I'm so late getting back]
Too many photographers.. Personally I’ve never had an experience of having to wait to get the same shot as the four hundred and thirty seven photographers ahead of me. Honestly I’d become tired and simply leave to find something more unique… Now here’s an idea… For years I’ve been adding to a post card collection covering the Colorado & Southern Railway, long since abandoned and torn up so difficult to find remnants. But this leads directly to my current interests of collecting postcards of places I find interesting here in New Mexico. A lot of the images are not photos, but hand colored renditions of what was a photo. Through all of this I’m learning of locations I’ve never heard of, places I can go and not stand in line waiting to take my turn, same shot different photographers… Hey there’s a business idea, go out and take RAW images of overly photographed locations. Then sell the unprocessed images to other photographers to save them all of that travel time. All they have to do is edit to their taste.
Too many photographers No, the more the merrier. People out with their phones snapping away, sharing images on social media, supplies the serious photographers with research material, allowing us to choose locations to plan a shoot.
I often wonder if the reason locations are kept secret is because the photographer doesnt want someone going and producing a better image that they got. Most of these locations arent that inspiring anyway, and maybe there is an attempt to 'big u' a location by saying it is secret. I can understand the need to keep wildlife areas low key to protect the habitat and wildlife, but not general landscape areas. I also think if a photographer truly wanted to keep an area secret, they wouldnt mention that it was secret, they would just talk about the area in general terms. They use the word secret as a way to try and get people interested in their videos.
Everyone should be able to enjoy their own flavor of photography. For those that sell cameras, accessories, tours, instructional material, you name it, there probably can't be too many photographers. For curmudgeons, there are way too many other photographers. Just look again at the image you showed of a group crammed into Antelope Canyon. It's on Navajo land in Arizona and access is only for those on an authorized tour. No thank you.

Thank you so much Martin, Some really great points raised, I'll certainly highlight them in the next video.
Sorry, I forgot to add that I'm off to a secret location adjacent to a busy (it's the beginning of rush hour) highway to photograph some trees.
